Listening to this song, I think it’s easy to forget that it’s being performed by only two people. With two acoustic guitars and two voices, they created this incredibly engaging and chilling song and there is no sense of it lacking anything at all.
David Rawlings is a symphony I saw this live I'm not religious but absolutely a spiritual experience. Gets different not better they poured it all out my morning jacket and other artists were there such was respect they had in community 🤙
Spectacular. I have read a lot about her over the years, finally getting around to a new musical immersion. I love this stuff. Intelligent, raw, beautifully written, played and sung music. Terrific live performance here. ❤
I don't always listen to Caleb Meyer by Gillian Welch & David Rawlings but when I do I replay it 4 or 5 times at full volume so my neighbors can hear it also!!
"I cried out my god i am your child, send your angels down. Then feeling with my finger tips, the bottle neck i found....." thats how you write a song....
Good God, Rawlings must have grip that could bust a titanium brick. Watching him pick on this song makes my hand ache. I've held one of those Epiphones and it takes a lot to get the sound he produces. I'm impressed!
completely agree - Jerry Douglas, David Rawlings. Not just technical mastery, but both of them follow completely melodic voices, never just "play notes that fit". Never a cliche from either of them.
I cried My God, I am your child send your angels down Then feelin' with my fingertips, the bottle neck I found I pulled that glass across his neck as fine as any blade, and I felt his blood run fast and hot around me where I laid.
Fast and furious, what a guitarist Dave is and the concentration he puts in that pickin is amazing. Clear vocals too from both especially Gillian, she sure has a powerful voice, and the emotion in this take is out of this world, it sure makes my hair stand on end
this is one of the best videos EVER put on RUclips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIllian and David create a musical supernova on this one - I never fail to break into a cold sweat when I see the two of them roaring into this one - musically and emotionally furious. incredibe. I only wish they would come to Europe....... DO YOU HEAR ME GILLIAN AND DAVID...? :-)
This is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard in my life. It had great story telling, great harmonies, killer guitar solos. I feel sorry for those that died before hearing this amazing piece.
Came back to this after quite a spell, still just as (more) impressive than the first time...Rawlings guitar seems to be floating its played so hard and well....
From the first few moments of hearing them play ever, a show (something akin to Austin City Limits) being re-broadcast in the wee hours, I started shouting for my husband to wake up as so not to miss a note. He thanked me, as we both fell in love with their music!
My GOD! ...is this a KILLER tune/performance? They have SO many elements/genres that they fuse into their "folk" sound. It's just amazing. They are just the most INFECTIOUS sound!
One of my favorite songs by Gillian, and this is the best version. That whole St. Luke's concert is fantastic. It's on RUclips. Rawlings is just unfreakin believable on guitar.
Wanting to hear this song today I asked Alexa to play it for me and I heard the studio recording which pales in comparison to the passion and drive on display here. David and Gillian really were feeling it with this one. I am so glad to be able to come back and hear it again. Such a stunning performance.
I discovered these two fairly late in their career. Together, this is the best music I've heard in a long time, and this BBC session is a great forum. Also, she's the only non native whose acquired accent I don't just hate. This music is the best.
My mother used to tell me that I would come to love country music, just like her. We were alike in almost every other way, as most said: beautiful, introverted, and preferring a lonely walk in the woods to a crowd most nights of the week. I disagreed at the time, but these days... well, at 23, my mother seems to have earned some posthumous points. Well played. Still don't care much for pop-country, though.
iam glad you found them, they are the best period. saw them alive just like there are here, in a small underground in seattle, and the place was packed, no room to even walk.
the kids of today need to be exposed to this music, so they will know what "real music" sounds like....these two musicians are always a real treat to hear
In all seriousness, I think Dave Rawlings is up there with Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton or whoever else your guitar hero may be. Jaw-droppingly good.
Much better than Clapton and Hendrix. Think guitarist John Doyle (Irish/American: Cathie Ryan Band) - only very different guitar playing but essential wonderment: Cathie Ryan: Peata Beag do Mhathar: ruclips.net/video/UXVG-u2pN-o/видео.html Cathie Ryan: What's Closest to the Heart ruclips.net/video/D13kwIa-Ug0/видео.html
Music that razes the hairs on your arms , intensity ,honesty ,gut that makes listening a rare experience . Compels me to explore these artists and there companions . Thank you
...well I cried "my God I am your child send your angels down"... WOW!! David is fantastic on the guitar, you feel the pain on the story in Gillian's vocals. These two are outstanding and I just them. Thank you for posting this video :=)
The Lad is definitely crankin' it out on this one, just inspiring. The sound on these BBC Videos is outstanding, I don't think you can get much better. Yep, inspiring Duo.
I don't really know if this can be called country, but for the sake of reference I'm going to say this is country. I normally hate country musicians, I think as professionals they lack skill and effort. But this is simply amazing. I'm blown away by David Rawlings. Truly amazing... I've been thinking about getting a new instrument soon. Another guitar was not on the list, until now. Excuse me while I listen to this performance a 40th time.
he is awesome! i can't decide who i like listening to more...Dave or Jerry Douglass. they both make me smile w/ their absolute mastery. I saw AKUS in Columbia MO a few years ago and just LOVED Jerry's Pedor Odonnell tribute song he does. i haven't had the opportunity to see Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings yet...hope i get the chance soon!
You are right. It is not a murder ballad. It's about some drunken loner who tries to rape a woman. She saves herself by slitting his throat with a broken moonshine bottle.
To agree with every comment here, what an astounding performance. As well as their guitar playing, I love the way their voices harmonize, and the way Gillian's voice is so piercing over their guitar playing. Why aren't these two Mega Legends? They've been around for at least 25 years or so, maybe they need a bigger record label to promote them. Have four of their albums, but I think I want them all.
I've been looking for this song for YEARS!! I saw it on a concert show on PBS once and still hum the refrain... It just came up in a playlist!! I'll be feeling gratitude and relief for a while I think.
The most metal folk song ever
One of the best folk songs with the best guitar harmonizing and picking I've ever heard. These two are a treasure.
@gerry8072 indeed. Just saw them play live a few weeks ago. They were amazing.
@@WalldoTheWInner Where was that? This May they will be in Wilmington DE, which is only an hour drive for me, so I’d better make plans.
@@gerry8072 in Kingston NY.
Listening to this song, I think it’s easy to forget that it’s being performed by only two people. With two acoustic guitars and two voices, they created this incredibly engaging and chilling song and there is no sense of it lacking anything at all.
Less is more. This is a truly moving performance.
The performance mirrors the intensity of the lyrics.
David Rawlings is a symphony I saw this live I'm not religious but absolutely a spiritual experience. Gets different not better they poured it all out my morning jacket and other artists were there such was respect they had in community 🤙
they are amazing. If you see them live, Gillian will occasionally try to play Dave's guitar. Spoiler alert- It's not the cheap old guitar- It's Dave!!
Absolutely!!!
As good a musical combination as there's ever been. Gillian and David are living legends in my book.
Spot on Kyle.
Yes his guitar is intense. And I have no words to describe Gillian.
This song almost makes me cry.
@@dougieh9676 '...my god I am your child send your angels down....'
It's suprising they were never more popular
this is one if the most spectacular recordings, he plays that guitar like a machine gun.
you're goddamn right he does
god damn right
Demais seu comentário 😂😅
Gillian doesn’t get the credit she deserves..Dave and Gillian together is magic…Legendary
Unbelievable imagery , compelling storytelling and authentic delivery. Rawlings is truly mesmerising here, bravo.
This is the song that got me (who strictly listened to punk rock) into bluegrass, at the tender age of 14
2:03 poetry , chilling ...the story
"I cried out my god i am your child, send your angels down. Then feeling with my finger tips, the bottle neck i found....." thats how you write a song....
I'm new, first impressions: amazed. They harmonize like Layne and Jerry. And that feller can play stinkin' play!
Totally timeless. It could have been written any time in the last 300 years.
3 million probably.
"I prayed to my dear god, to send his angels down, and feeling with, my finger tips, the bottle neck, I found.." Man., No one writes lyrics like that.
Yep. Turns out God helps those who help themselves! :-)
the beautiful melodic sounds of folky country, yet with the lyrics of pure passionate rage. metal has nothing on this woman.
Man, Dave is on fire here. What a brilliant player.
Chilling--this song still gives me goosebumps. Amazing performance.
Marsha Rupe me2 :)
Me too. I haven’t heard it for a while and it came on pandora. I think I’ve played it 10 times in a row now
19 people's fingers slipped and accidentally hit thumbs down.
These two are incredible. See them live and you'll never forget it.
saw them live for the 2nd time a few weeks ago, and loved every second. Absolutely amazing in concert
I barely remember when we could still see thumbs down. That feature needs to come back.
This is the most evocative music I've ever heard. The style of guitar, the vocals... a perfect duo if I've ever heard one.
Evocative...great adjective!
Rawlings is absolutely ferocious in this song... watched it a ridiculous amount of times.
This video should and would humble 99% of the guitar players out there
I'll always remember the first time I heard this song was while sitting on the porch swing on my daughter's porch when she began to play...
Excellent, I think I saw how did that...paraphrase thing. Beautiful work.
Wow, wow, what can I say? Rawlings' guitar slays everything in its path......
Patrick Pierquet well put.
The most inspirational guitar skill Ive ever seen. Great workmanship by David.
'Workmanship'? This is fucking PASSION!
Good God, Rawlings must have grip that could bust a titanium brick. Watching him pick on this song makes my hand ache. I've held one of those Epiphones and it takes a lot to get the sound he produces. I'm impressed!

I adore Gillian Welch.. what a talent! truly one of the best songwriters out there
David Rawlings simply plays the hell out of that guitar!
Wow baby !! I dont think I've ever been able to leave comments on this song before !! I love you Christina Mae Bush !!!! 2006 till eternity!!
Rawlings & Welch rock! This song is something else!
Best of Garth Brooks
Love how she hums into it. Such an amazing song, so well written. David Rawlings ascended to another universe on this one.
This just might be the best live performance of any song ever. Goosebumps
If you ever get a chance to see them Live DO IT!!!!!
Salina, Kansas 2018 ...it was amazing !

I love the anger in David's guitar. God, these people who have the power to move us all through music.
My GOD! ...is this a KILLER tune/performance? They have SO many elements/genres that they fuse into their "folk" sound. It's just amazing. They are just the most INFECTIOUS sound!
Never get enough of David Rawlings' flat picking or Gillian's voice!! Great tune!
I love listening to the two, but let's face it: Gillian sings the song, not the note. It works for her, but her's is not a great voice.
One of my favorite songs by Gillian, and this is the best version. That whole St. Luke's concert is fantastic. It's on RUclips. Rawlings is just unfreakin believable on guitar.
beautiful, a match made in heaven, acoustic art at it's highest level. wow.
I simply LOVE this version... it's imbued with energy.
Amazing song. So emotional.
These two are amazing; together they give her lyrics the dark energy they imply.
Haunting, beautiful, masterful, technically amazing...there always has been and will be great music...This is.

How do you make an extraordinary song better? Just and brilliant singing and out of this world guitar picking!
God, I love this song!! I just found it in my favorites after several years. What amazing voices!
This song is amazing.
David Rawlings is cooler than the other side of the pillow.
I know I'm five years too late, but just want you to know that I'm totally stealing that saying from you.
@@georgelincolnrockwell5843 It is a cool saying, but it came from a movie. I can't remember it's name, but it starred Greg Allman as a drug dealer.
He’s extremely cool.
The movie was “Rush”, an extremely accurate account of the drug-dealing side of South Texas life in the early 70’s.
This is so good, I just fell upon these two..
Holy hell i can't watch this video w/o scraping my jaw off the floor. SERIOUS talent...and great recording. can't stop listening

Holy snap-anolaH! What a Song! Am covering this one for SURE and CERTAIN!. Thank you G. Welch and D. Rawlings
Such fantastic music. Two extremely talented and humble musicians.

Had the privilege of seeing this duo in San Francisco this spring. Painfully good!

Voices and guitars. This is pretty amazing music.
there are no words...just perfection at it's best
This is so dark and creepy - has to be my favorite song of theirs.
Yes, Rawlings is on fire. But Gillian Welch.....Lord have Mercy!
I love a good murder ballad.
or, rather, a predatorial rape ballad in which inspired self~defence saves the day. you know. just a little :: p e r s p e c t i v e :: ? maybe?

totally correct !
@hidden stitch
You serious?
You are right. It is not a murder ballad. It's about some drunken loner who tries to rape a woman. She saves herself by slitting his throat with a broken moonshine bottle.
Great Video!!!~I especially love this type of harmony~Wow what a song and performance!!!~5*****'s and more!!!

Lord, Rawlings can´t be human...
If I could go back in time I would want to be present when this was recorded...........
This is my idea of what music should be. And what musicians should look like. Brilliant.
I need to share this beautiful and chilling song!
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings: "Caleb Meyer"
Pay close attention to the lyrics.
Very, extremely, amazing both of them together...
I've been looking for this song for YEARS!! I saw it on a concert show on PBS once and still hum the refrain... It just came up in a playlist!! I'll be feeling gratitude and relief for a while I think.
