    Some of my favorite aspects of the movie:
    1. The movie starts with Creed getting the runback on “Pretty” Ricky from the first movie and finally beating him.
    2. Despite Ivan Drago killing Apollo, Adonis and Viktor Drago were on friendly terms.
    3. The uneasiness with Jordan and Majors first meeting up, despite being friends. The tension felt realistic.

    One thing to clarify Is that Dame intentionally hurt his shoulder during sparing weeks prior so he could target an already weakened shoulder on fight night as well as all the other dirty tactics he used that night to capitalize on a already one armed Felix ,So Dame wasn’t rlly the better fighter, he just finessed everyone who got him the fight with cheap strategies, that’s y everyone was upset . Not just because Felix lost lol

      Right, but the argument he's making is that /this is what boxing is./ Boxing is an ugly, ugly sport full of brutality and ruthlesness. Ain't nobody playing paladin on that ring when their livelihoods and the integrity of their brain is at stake.
      Actual boxing is about zeroing in on whatever disadvantages and known injuries the opponent has and hitting there until that man gives up or is broken in. In fact that first fight looks awful and disgusting specifically because they made it look like boxing actually is. Dame is a bit street brawly, but he's definitely no more violent than boxing as a whole is.

    That "you learned a few moves... without me" really showed *WHY* Dame had gotten so angry. He felt his brother had basically abandoned him, ignored him and cast him aside, only to be successful in what he thought he would succeed in.
    How they portrayed their childhood, it felt like Dame really would have brought Donnie with him had he been successful. So taking that fall for him, all of the history between them, this was amazing.
    All of the anger and hate that they felt, they left it in that ring. The visualization of having only MBJ and Majors in the ring, blocking out everyone except each other, flashing to their traumatic past. It was really beautiful on a film making aspect. Plus the locker room scene, after they were finally able to cope, they were able to be vulnerable with each other. The wide shot angled with a dark shadow surrounding them, highlighted with the lockers adding warmth around the two of them. Cutting to close up profiles of each other on corresponding sides of the screen to make you feel invested in what the other says to each other. You almost become a part of their conversation as you feel their development and reconciliation.
    Michael B Jordan did an amazing job with his debut, Jonathan Majors did an outstanding job with Dame, that much is undeniable.
    Its really a story of Dame and Donnie coming to terms with their childhoods and it was awesome 👌

    I really love the 'its easy for you' 'no it's not easy for me' lines about opening up and talking. A lot of critics were fairly down on this movie but there is a lot of stuff like that in this movie that really is a step above just another 'boxing' movie. Stuff like the ASL scenes, the call backs to the first Creed movie and fighters showing up from last movies to make the world feel fuller instead of just having them as a one movie appearance

    Yes, the point of boxing is to hurt each other. But there needs to be some form of honor in the ring. And Dame didn't have that with Felix. Cheap shots and completely disregarding the dude's wellbeing after the match, despite knowing who trained him is pretty rough.

    • @ASpaceOstrich
      @ASpaceOstrich Год назад +20

      Mm. Honour in fighting was a big deal and its mostly going by the wayside so I've noticed a lot of people just don't get it. The phrase "kick someone when they're down" isn't originally a metaphor, its literal. Its about having that honour. And breaking those taboo's drags everyone down. Using moves that are technically legal but considered dishonourable is a big no-no. Especially because it amounts to cheating in that the opponent wouldn't be on guard for it. It opens everyone involved up to getting more seriously injured and takes it from a sport with mutual respect to more like an actual fight. That's why everyone was so disgusted with his behavour.

    The cheap shots in the Felix fightwere necessary to show his desperation but a clean fight with similar results gives skill to the menace and gets further into Donnie's head. Having that clean fight be an easy disarming of Drago II would be a mark of terror for Creed.

    Most boxers don't pick a totally unknown opponent a few weeks before the fight. Especially when the coach can see that the fighting style isn't the safest for his boxer.

    After watching the John wick 4 video I came back to this video again to give it more love and I saw this video had under 400 comments and that made me super sad so here I am adding a comment.
    Cinema wins I have to say that your videos are my favorite things in the world as someone who doesn’t like sitting down and watching full movies I love coming to RUclips and watching your videos and I find greater joy when I watch one of your videos of a movie I did watch and loved because it reminds me of that movie and I want to rewatch it.
    For example I recently watched your inside out video and it reminded me that it was an amazing movie because the first time I watched it the message and spirit of the movie went over my head because I didn’t pay attention to it. I also love getting someone else’s perspective and perception of other things and with your bright fun positive tone of voice it really draws me in to the emotion of the scene that I probably wouldn’t have achieved on my own.
    I just want to say that your videos bring me indescribable joy.
    Also you Everything Everywhere All at once is one of my favorite video of yours because the movie itself is too much for me to watch over and over again but the message is so relatable to me that sometimes I need to remind myself of that “if nothing matters …something…something” line because it truly brings stuff into perspective for me and also I think it’s super cool you’re on a soccer team.🙂

    I think the whole thing your missing with everyone being annoyed in Dames title fight isn't that he won and it's a combat sport, it's that the build up to the fight was everyone not knowing why he was going soo far out of his way for Dame when to them Dame was just this ex-con who was very obviously on a warpath and going to cause trouble to what Adonis had built up, so when it happened it was a "we've been telling you this for months" kind of deal. There could have been reshoots as to why everyone seemed more overly disgusted than just badly annoyed but thats what I took from it, just not understanding Adonis loyalty and willingness to give everything up for someone they see as just a bad apple.
    On another note as much as I liked this film and understand all the artistic mentalities they put into the final fight, it really just took me out of the moment with how jarring a difference it was, I feel like you could have not had the colour fluctuations and kept the crowd there just silent and you could have still done the story-telling they wanted to.

    • @Gledster
      @Gledster Год назад +6

      Making the final fight more artistic also ruined some of the tension in it, for me at least.
      Suddenly the fight skipped to the last round (or so) and it's like "what? Where was the fight?"
      Which is strange in a boxing film.

  • @HEELKAIJU
    @HEELKAIJU Год назад +9

    So... I'm not a boxer. And I will admit I might be talking out of my ass but, hearing the way other combat sports fighters (MMA, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai) speak about how they treat their opponents, it's more like they're colleagues; like iron sharpening iron. It's competitive but there's also an understanding that this is a community that works in its best interests. If you have someone in a heel hook, you're not actively trying to snap their ankle even though you're pushing your opponent to the point that they tap out and reach that breaking point.
    Dame's fight with Felix was devoid of that community. He was trying to HURT Felix - something a seasoned fighter who was an active participant IN that community of fighters wouldn't have done. Dame never got to BE that because of his stint in jail. All he knew was survival - even during his younger forays in the ring, it was always about survival and he never got that part of him smoothed out. In fact, there's a slight parallel in how Donnie, over those previous two movies, battled his own deeply held issues to become the fighter he was at the end of this movie. So the anger everyone shows at Dame (and Donnie) is about that desire to harm - not just beat - his opponent. Felix losing wasn't the point; Felix being broken in what they considered an unnecessary way is what did it. (Heck, even the weight class disparity was a bit of meta storytelling because no way would Felix be in the ring with a guy like Dame just based on that alone and here you have Donnie vouching for it and it ends with an ambulance ride).
    I will say that I definitely did LOVE the first fight because it shows a contrast between the spectacle and respectability of fighting that Donnie was able to grow into (touch gloves, follow the rules, shake hands when you're done and praise the winner if you lose) vs. the reality of fighting for survival that Dame had to go through. It really showed, without flashbacks, what Dame's life on the inside was all about and painted the character perfectly.

    I feel like the villains paint a really interesting dichotomy between the Rocky and Creed films. Most of the Rocky movie villains are big, almost gimmicky “monster” villains, while the Creed villains are more real and, at least in 2 and 3, personal to the hero, kind of at the expense of having an otherwise defining “thing”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m most cases the villains work incredibly well across both series and I love both series dearly, I just find it interesting to see the difference.

    Dame fell into a very difficult place to me. He was easy to empathize with up until he targeted Donnie after becoming champ. At that point, he just became a cruel bully. And as someone that endured a lot of bullying as a kid, that's a surefire way to cut me off from caring about them. I could see that Jordan is depicting that much of Dame's actions are driven by fear and anger, but I really didn't want to connect to him after that.
    re: about Dame becoming champ, people aren't angry that he won or that he cheated, but that he's bad winner; the fact that he's so willing to break the rules to get an edge, with the flagrant elbow. It's a bit like Sonny Liston back in the day, the image of the champ having mafia ties meant he wasn't really embraced as champ. With Dame, he's a guy that came out of nowhere with no reputation, had no issue breaking the rules, and won. Sure, he's the champ, but no one likes how he did it. Like Liston, he established a heel persona and that will make people reluctant to like him.

      Fair point. I do think Dame's behaviour after his 'win' is more harsh as he's pulled off his plan of manipulating Donnie and getting revenge very successfully and is rubbing it in, hence why-high on confidence- he goads Donnie into fighting himself to complete his revenge. I do think the 'reconciliation' scene after Donnie defeats him is there to show he's been humbled and his back to his earlier more relatable behaviour but I agree they went a bit too far at times.

    So I watched Creed three on a college visit, however haven’t watched the full other two movies. But something I picked up on from the first movie that carried over into the third one was the headgear during practice. In the first one he didn’t use headgear, and something that happens in the Rockyverse is fighting oneself. So he went into training hiding behind a false identity, and after he learned what he was fighting for the headgear came off. And that’s even further shown when it comes to the final fight.

    This movie really didn’t feel like a ‘first time director’ movie, felt tight and concise, like MBJ’s been directing for years. Also helped that there was a clear shift in directorial style, as this was the first time Creed’s truly on his own, making his own legacy and fighting his own past demons without any prior Rocky character influence, trainer or villain. Would it have been better with Sly? Maybe, you can tell the exact scene where he would’ve been written in, but I think the movie does just fine without him.

    Idk why, but this movie felt *slightly* rushed and I think it could’ve been 30-45 minutes longer. They could’ve touched on Dame’s internal struggles after being released form prison a tad bit more, and they definitely should have shown at least 1 championship defense from Dame after defeating Felix w/ a few additional highlights from a few other defenses before eventually challenging for Adonis’ belt.
    Despite that, the movie was great.

    Regarding your analysis of the fight between Felix and Dame, Dame did actually win because of his dirty tactics, not in spite of them. Yes, he's skilled and gritty, but Felix is the faster, stronger, and more skilled fighter. He wasn't taking Dame seriously as a contender, and Dame used dirty tactics through the first two rounds to severely unbalance him. By the time he stopped playing around, his left arm was already useless and he was disoriented. If he'd stopped playing sooner, he would've won by a landslide, and this is shown by him landing a combo at the second round that knocks a tooth out of Dame's mouth even through the mouth guard.

  • @Darthalas

    Solid solid video for an awesome movie! I absolutely loved your analysis and I appreciated your insights. I observed most of them myself when I was watching the movie but I could never dream to put them so eloquently in words 👍🏾.
    I admit that I felt a little weird about how the villain was portrayed in this movie when I first saw it in theaters because they made him very hard to hate for most of the movie; I felt great sadness for him and about him at the end and felt mixed about that, it wasn't until after I thought about what I had seen that I really really appreciated who he was and how he was portrayed. It's always great when you have a truly diabolical villain that gets your blood going such as the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but real life villains are usually far more complex and things most often are not black and white. Michael b. Jordan did a stellar job in the director seat and that movie was that rare great third movie. It was also strange not to see Rocky; I certainly believe they should have talked about him a little more, but I didn't feel as strongly as most people. I feel the torch passed beautifully in Creed one and two and it would have been a disservice to have Rocky in this one after having such a great finish and training a successor.
    Also side note, thank you so much for uploading on nebula and giving us a double dose of great videos! The d&d movie was shockingly super fun and good and your takes were great in that as well😂👍🏾

  • @StewartFletcher
    @StewartFletcher Год назад +9

    Dame is perhaps one of the most subtlely (and overtly) terrifying villains in movie history. I've been around people with heavy trauma, mental illness, and violent tendencies. Even just normal scenes, like Dame talking to Bianca and Adonis around the fire, were filled with so much tension because Majors feels like he could snap at any moment. I was constantly afraid of what Dame might do to the people around him, knowing that if he went off, there would be basically no stopping him. Most if not all of that danger and tension comes from the immensely fantastic performance of Majors. He mastered the little ticks, lingering glances, and shifty body language of someone who is imbalances and ferocious, but is trying to keep it contained.
    He is a villain. To say he isn't is weird and I think you're giving Dame too much credit. He's a villain. He's a bad man. But he's not evil. Most real life villains are victims and Dame is no different.

  • @TrentPruitt1997

    I disagree with your comments on Dame not being a bad guy: dude's a piece of work from the very beginning, and he had everything planned. He didn't just want to become the heavyweight champion, he set out to destroy the Creed name.
    You can see this very early on, in the restaurant scene, when he already starts to manipulate Adonis through guilt and manages to get in his gym. For the first hour, Adonis lets Dame walk all over him even with Duke's warnings and Bianca's uneasiness.
    When Duke ends up beating Chavez, that's on Creed, and I think the others react normally. Chavez was their guy and because of Adonis's misplaced feelings of guilt, Chavez gets beaten up and loses the title; and Dame is unleashed, drops the timid persona and is on track to obliterate the Creed legacy. Of course it's a boxing match and anything can happen, but everyone told him not to agree to it and yet he went to his fighter, the guy he's actually supposed to look for, and told him that it was alright. The scene in which Creed convinces Chavez's mother is so painful to watch, because you can see how deep down he knows he's sending Chavez to a fight he strongly suspects he will lose, but is so overpowered by Dame that he feels compelled to ignore his gut and what everyone else is telling him.
    Also, the fact that "Drago's fine" at the end doesn't excuse that Dame went all Tonya Harding on him. That's some despicable stuff and could've ruined his career, and Dame never even pays for that.
    It takes Chavez getting KO'd and his mom's death, but Creed eventually toughens up and fights Dame because at that point it's the only solution left. I think saying that Dame is not so bad in this movie cheapens the concepts regarding masculinity that this movie tackles. Dame is a villain, a sympathetic one at that, because of his past, but he's definitely the bad guy and he would've become a monster if Adonis hadn't stopped him at the end.
