It was a really good portrayal of how white women are not always victims and ,in some ways, support the violence of white men (as long as it does not touch them)
Man, this is the best analysis of Daredevil I've seen. The last part of the video, with Matt reading Thurgood Marshall, give goosebumps. I hope you can keep working on this show.
I was about halfway through this video before realizing this isnt some massive youtuber. These videos need way more views they are insanely high quality.
1:06:02 despite common belief, Father Lantom’s right to say that the devil is a minor figure in the biblical texts. The vast majority of the modern idea of the devil - ultimate evil, fallen angel, the ever present temptation, and so much more - is not something that’s present in the text of the Bible. Most of that comes exclusively from texts whose sources are even more ambiguous and/or dubious than much of the New Testament or from works like Dante’s Inferno, which as far as I know never pretend to be anything but fiction. (And let’s not even get started on how much of the angel/demon/hell/heaven mythology within Christianity comes from miscommunication, mistranslation or misinterpretation, and/or later extra dubious sources like those I mentioned a moment ago.) As someone with a personal interest in misconceptions like that, I remember being pleasantly surprised by Father Lantom saying that.
This video as a retrospective was honestly deceptively well detailed and accounted. I really like the recount of characters during their last scenes and I especially like the criticisms where it's necessary
1:48:00 I think it’s better to have it have been a random background character be the mole. It shows that Fisk’s reach extends past what even we the view imagine. Like you wouldn’t expect random reporter lady to be the mole when she’s never spoken a word. You assume she’s just an extra and won’t matter, then you’re very wrong
Netflix's DD was so good especially with the writing of Wilson as someone who did not know about the villain. I really adored his calm public demeanor then they shock you with the car scene and the viewer is now grappling on how he is both stable and unstable. Then to parallel his goals with Matthews? In wanting to make the city better? But what is better? Better for whom? What does it look like? Daredevil tackled a lot of questions that get discussed in higher education in a way that was still a) showing and not telling b) does not talk down to the viewer. I really miss this era of writing in general and wonder when we will reach that again. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they knew what to do with Karen after S1, but that is honestly my only critique of the show. Costuming, choreography, staging, lighting, etc. was all perfect and well thought out.
Feel like i need to point out actually they were right, Satan is a pretty minor character in the Bible, in fact the idea christians have of the Devil isn’t in the Bible, they agglomerated several unrelated characters together to forge that idea. Lucifer was a reference to a Babylonian king, satan meant the accuser and was used to reference several characters, including angels working for God (in Job and Numbers for example) and character who showed some defiance like David and Peter. The snake in the garden was just a snake. And the serpent mentioned in Revelation who is referred as the enemy is probably an allusion to Leviathan.
9:54 using what Westley said about his methods being unsettling I take it to mean he won’t just get it over with quick people can’t suffer if you shoot them in the head
You are a truly great RUclipsr. Your videos are ridiculously long but so well made that I always watch all of them, often over a period of days. Your future success is as inevitable as Thanos. Keep up the great work 👏👏👏
there were many things I liked about this series but I was impressed with the extremely tight writing with every line adding something and every scene serving multiple functions between character development, plot movement, future setups, there was no filler and each episode ended on a surprise ending that was always compelling. Even when it came out it stood out, compared to the drivel that is 90% filler the writing seems a never to be seen again golden age of mythical level.
This was a fun watch. Buckled down and watched Daredevil two years ago and it quickly became one of my favourite television series. Totally happy that it along with the Netflix series are getting recognition. I wait with trepidation for Born Again.
Awesome video! Seriously I really appreciate all the work this would’ve taken. I get it probably sucks sometimes to make such awesome videos that take so long to make and not get as many views as you deserve, but here’s to hoping this video blows up!
In the comics: Sometimes they explain his Lie Detector as a certain smell. Like how you can smell fear, you can smell lies. But the heartbeat is more known.
I think that the use of Blind, Faithful, Drug Addicts was a great touch for Gao's criminal empire. She represented a spiritual threat to Murdock, literally being the type of person who was selling what he'd bought into as a younger man. However, the faith he possessed was truer than theirs, with a benevolent God saving his children led astray. This is opposed to Gao, who abandoned even her closest ally: Wilson Fisk.
Killing Ben was a mistake. He could have been an organic link between the street-level heroes that eventually become the Defenders, instead of shoe-horning Claire into every series.
I mean we put him in a situation where he was gonna die, no way around. I respect the show for not playing favorites with established characters like that.
Daredevils senses dont just allow him to hear heart beats. He can feel their breathing change and their temperature. He can also tell if someones voice changes. Hes actually getting a lot more than you think with his abilities!
Yeah, his "lie detector" ability doesnt just operate on heartbeat, but its one of the biggest aspects of it. Also, when Matt dropped the extinguisher on Foster or when he dropped him from the building, he knew he wouldnt kill him, because he predicts/feels those things.
Re: Healy and Prohaska. I always read that scene as the gun was supposed to jam and was really only there to provoke Prohaska into attacking so Healy could claim self-defense. I had forgotten about Healy buying the gun from Turk who is clearly full of it.
Catholic school here for there 1:22:00 the catholic guilt is a well known cornerstone, this adds to the idea of jesus not dying for a sins as is often taught but suffering for are sins that's why he dies is such a way and to give us a chance to overcome are own sins by suffering and by doing what's right In that vein as god is all knowing he knew the devil would fall and his son would do the whole suffering thing So what the priest was getting at was that the Devil and Jesus was two ways of trying to do the same thing save Humans one was an ideal way to live life being good and suffering for your ideals and faith the other was the all the bad ways to live and to show how avoiding suffering is impossible so its best to suffer for god and faith then for nothing after death in other words a warning
Im a bit late to this and im not christian but in 1:22:13 i dont think its illogical that god made satan as a symbol for humans. In order for the message of satans fall to be effective it had to have happened before humans were made so he can already exist as that symbol and warning by the time god made humans. in the case of that being the reason, its just proper planning on god part like "i want to make humans in my image and likeness but i need a boogeyman to keep them in line, let me create this other dude as the epitome of evil so by the time the humans are around i can go hey check out that guy dont do what he did"
As someone who watched the show years ago and loved it - but not enough to go back and rewatch it - this analysis was such a fun way to re-engage with it. I'm looking forward to your Jessica Jones video (god I love that show's premise) and hoping you'll tie together the whole Defenders series - most of it is excellent work (except maybe Iron Fist, that show was entirely forgettable) and I look forward to seeing you pick it apart. As far as Daredevil goes, I personally really liked the portrayal and themes of Catholicism in this show. I'm an agnost myself and while I don't *mind* religion in cinema, in so many shows it ends up being either THE guiding factor, or a preachy and/or cliché side-story. The portrayal of Matt in this show actually felt like a breath of fresh air to me: if you are Catholic yourself, here's something you can identify with that ISN'T preachy or unrealistic. I genuinely feel like if I were Catholic, I could point to this show as a good example of a healthy adherence to religion and a strong Catholic character that struggles with his beliefs, but holds onto them. Just a weird little brain-nugget I've never gotten to share, I guess.
@spidgey i found the video by wanting a thorough and comprehensive recap for myself of this amazing show. This was very well made, i hope videos for season 2 and especially 3 are also coming. :)
The cameo makes more sense if u take into account the Smallville tie in comics tht take place after the show where Clark is Superman and does become the greatest superhero, They even mentioned during the cameo tht lex was the President which is also a nod to those comics
This is great! I'm working on my own video about the entire series, and this came up when doing research. Love the video so far. Can we expect a season 2 and 3? The video I'm working on is more of an overall review and dissection of the story and highlights what is done right and what is wrong. I'd love to see what your takes are for the following seasons! Hope we can expect more!
In defense of Wesley's death, he called the bluff of a woman who just woke from being chloroformed. Most people, outside of alcoholics, don't recover that quickly from chloroform
I just finished binging DD, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones Iron Fist, Defenders, and Punisher. Damn shame they ended. Consistent great writing, great characters and acting and high production values made those series some of the best MCU. They were clearly setting up more DD and maybe "Knightwing" a team-up of Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, which would've been awesome
He has to lean in because as far as the gangster knows he can hear just like any other person. If he just says, “Say it!” He won’t. What is more puzzling is that Matt should’ve figured out that’s exactly what he wanted to do, but ultimately the gangster didn’t get the upper hand really since the floor gave out. And OF COURSE it reminds him of the wall he used to stare at when he was a kid. I can’t say for sure since it’s been a long time, but I’m pretty sure they faded back from his wall to the painting at one point.
I think your point on Fisk not killing Matt when he had the chance being a bad move is fair but I interpret the reason why he did it differently. We had just had an episode of Fisk’s backstory and motivations being fully explained to us. He is a man who wants his arc. The change in his morning routine shows us that he is willing to change his habits if he thinks it would make him a better man. So whilst he stands atop a victory over both Nobu and Matt, he stops himself from the emotional violence that we have seen from the flashback and from the car door scene. He is choosing to be the “bigger man” and not sully his hands like his father undoubtedly would have in that moment. Obviously, this is still as mistake because the rest of the show happens but in that moment when he believes he has won, he lets the emotional satisfaction of killing Matt himself go. That is his major character flaw, he suppresses his emotions to a dangerous degree.
There's a scene in Sense8 that makes me think of the different ideologies of Wilson and Matt. It goes kinda like: Antagonist: "This city is ripe for the picking, it will go to it's knees for a man like you" Protagonist: "You don't understand. This is my city. These are my people. And we go to our knees for no one." This makes me think of the difference between Wilson, thinking the city wants a savior who will change it, vs Matt who knows the truth of his city and knows that change will only happen through the people
16:52 That's where I'm at. I've always been thinking about that fact, lie detectors are not that accurate. That said I can technically help, but it's not fool proof. When you first introduced the Karen scene with Matt and Foggy, it just stayed in the back of my mind that she should be stressed AF and display a crazy and all over the place heart rate. But, as you pointed at other things that could be used as nitpicks (like some of the bad guys stupid decisions), our suspension of disbelief is not broken because the rest of the show's writing/directing/acting is on point. We subconsciously forgive it. Anyways, I might add to that comment since I'm really early in the video. I'm especially glad you see why it could be an issue, and I wish the showrunners for Born Again would be more careful and introduce the idea that his tactic can't really work 100% of the time. Although I'd rather they fail on that and don't on any other aspect of the characters within this world. I'd rather it would stay consistent with the 3 previous seasons. Anyways, let's continue the video. Cheers from France! 🍻
The Catholic view of daredevil is the best. It’s in our faith to not only suffer for the sake of others, do what we can to help others, and understand that we have original sin/constant sin. Matt doing all he can is what a Catholic who sees crime wishes they could do.
As a half-blind lapsed Catholic named Matthew, I endorse this video.

the catholic guilt is a well known cornerstone, this adds to the idea of jesus not dying for a sins as is often taught but suffering for are sins that's why he dies is such a way and to give us a chance to overcome are own sins by suffering and by doing what's right
In that vein as god is all knowing he knew the devil would fall and his son would do the whole suffering thing
So what the priest was getting at was that the Devil and Jesus was two ways of trying to do the same thing save Humans
one was an ideal way to live life being good and suffering for your ideals and faith the other was the all the bad ways to live and to show how avoiding suffering is impossible so its best to suffer for god and faith then for nothing after death in other words a warning
