Fun fact: The characters in the first Animal Crossing can recognize a love letter and reject you.
When I was a kid, I thought Olivia was pretty and was borderline obsessed with her, so I sent her such a letter. She rejected me completely, told me to leave her alone, and included a piece of furniture as bargaining and out of pity.
It was a golf bag.
God, I miss the characterization of early animal crossing. All the villagers now feel like window dressing for your island. They all say the same stuff, repeat themselves so much, and just in general are way more 'nice'
Here my first moment when I play new leaf for the first time on the I was talking to Rover on the train about my town and when I come out the train station outside one of the three villagers was another blue cat that look similar to Rover and then when I get to know him more he share the same first name as Tom nook.

On having Animal Crossing nightmares as a kid, I distinctly remember one I had where Tom Nook gave me a new house and inside the house was a single chair. When I sat on the chair, the floor turned into a portal to hell. Yup.
You must not have paid the rent, I assume.
_RIP AND TEAR... UNTIL IT IS DONE._
honestly my favorite part about reading that wasn't the fact that the chair sends you to hell but rather you just, saw a random chair in the middle of your house and the first thing you did was sit in it.
Guess you didn’t give him his nuts
A little late, but I loved this video! I also miss the old school yard myths. There were a ton of those with Pokemon back in the day.

I remember my older brother telling me there was a secret way to find the ship that Gulliver was on by contacting a helicopter by building a helicopter pad and flying over to a cave where the boat would be. I never did build the helicopter pad needed, unsurprisingly

Nerd voice: actually Tom Nook isn’t a landlord because he doesn’t collect rent. He’s an independent contractor who only asks to be reimbursed for his work. Screw all haters.
They literally call it a mortgage in New Leaf. He owns all your debt. He doesn't need to have monthly deadlines because you are trapped. We don't know how much it truly cost to build that addition to your house
Regular voice: ya u right lol
FlightlessChicken eh, mortgage is just a fancy term for a secured loan. Contractors can put a lien on your property for unpaid labor. He builds the houses, secures you an interest free loan, and never collects rent. That’s pure socialism right there.
@@retroinspect How do we know it's interest free? I don't remember him saying that; though he might of, it's been years. And even if he did, we never see an invoice. We have no way to say if they actually interest free
Edit: removed )
FlightlessChicken well I haven’t paid him in 20 years and he hasn’t come for my kneecaps so I’d say that’s pretty interest free. But in every game he says take your time. You get interest from the “bank” in the game but if you owe Tom Nook 50 bells it’ll always be 50 bells.

Funny, the only time I see anyone claiming Nintendo is locking content behind a paywall, was those Amibo figures.
The Gameboy linking to the Gamecube was accepted because owning a Gameboy was a no brainer at the time. Actually, I've seen hundreds of people wishing that any of their DS or 3DS models could hook up to the Wii/Wii U as well, which Nintendo never delivered on fully sadly.
Does...does the switch count?
I mean not everyone had one. I got a Gamecube and didn't get another "console" until the DS Lite. It was a little ridiculous to me I was expected to spend like $100 at the time to use content in a game I already paid for. I was like 6 years old, it wasn't exactly fair.
Nintendo locking content behind Amiibo was one of the worst things they've done with the toy line...
back when Pokemon Bank was announced for Gen 6, people were saying that DESPITE for Gen 4 to 5 transferal you needed two separate DS'
amiibo AND Pokemon gen 8....the Pokemon complaints are beyond ridiculous though. As for the amiibo, personally the only time I've ever taken issue with it is the content tied to the Monster Hunter figures and the Hello Kitty themed Animal Crossing cards...you know, since they only released in Japan and scalpers/re-sellers are greedy sacks of shit I hate with a burning passion :/
Leading up to and after New Horizons came out, EVERYTHING Animal Crossing related suddenly doubled in value, and the prices are not going down anytime soon.
It'll go down soon. Its only been a month
@@Manak26 I wish it had only been a month, but the prices have been increasing since December of last year.
amiibo cards are worth more than oil right now! I'm wondering if I should sell mine, although the only desirable amiibo card I have is Camofrog's...
an update on all of this.
It is not just Animal Crossing that shot up in value. A lot of games shot up in value!
I wonder why..... it is a very obvious reason...
One time I had a really really scary animal crossing nightmare as a kid and I think I might have woken up from it in the middle of the night or some unusual time. I asked my dad I think if I could play wild world for a couple of minutes just to make sure all the animals were ok. He let me check on them thankfully. I hate the nightmares centered around ruining something nice and innocent.
What was it about?
Can I just say how sweet it is for you to check on your animals to make sure they're okay
My favorite memory of animal crossing new horizons is when I catched a thousand sea bass looking for a tuna and when I catched a thousand horse mackerel looking for the barreleye
For future, the correct past tense is caught, not catched. I hate to be that asshole but you should all know
@@luigi7834 ah yeah, glad you catched that ;)
One of the most underappreciated youtubers ever. I love how in depth you go in every video. Plus I love how you cover obscure games that not many people remember. It's always interesting learning about them and hearing your thoughts on them. Props to you for always finding the good qualities in games. A lot of people would tear those old school platformers apart and never give them a fair shake. Great video, as always.
Funnily enough my favourite thing about the original Animal Crossing was the villagers, and how much more personality they had. You had a lot more dialogue options with them, and if you ticked them off, they were RUDE.
"Nintendo would never give you a weird way to catch a fish."

23:33 - The way you catch tarantulas gives me super anxiety.
Good video btw. This game is what we all need during this time and makes me want to go to an island vacation away from the news, internet, and the paranoia.
Thank you Nintendo for not making it a Japanese exclusive all those years ago.
This is the best way to catch tarantulas. You need to press A, then get the attention of tarantula and wait for it to jump, then you can release A, almost guaranteed catch
@@r033cx actually I think the best way is to creep up one them. When they are in pouncing position stop moving. When they're flat on the ground approach until they go in pounce position again. Rinse and repeat until you're close enough.

I know Nitrorad probably isn’t going to see this but this has to be one of my favorite videos of his. It’s so personal and so nice to rewatch and hear all these different stories. Animal Crossing is such a community driven game and there really aren’t enough vids sharing stories like this.
I agree
You talking about your Animal Crossing nightmares reminded me of one of my video game-related nightmares I used to have. It was the one where me and my dad are sitting in the family van outside a store waiting for mom. All of a sudden the van shifts and begins to sink into the ground, or more accurately, a puddle of Shadow Mario's graffiti, the same way the graffiti made buildings and people sink into the ground in Mario Sunshine. It was terrifying watching the world get replaced by complete darkness right before waking up in a sweat.
I had similar nightmares from Mario Sunshine. One of my earliest video game nightmares took place in Ricco Harbor, where I was fighting the big Blooper boss. The environment would just fall away except for me standing on a small steel platform held up by scaffolding. The map would get flooded with water, the sky texture lost its clouds and just became this aqua color, and the Blooper boss would become giant in size.
This is one of my favorite videos of yours in a while. I hope you do more like this.
“Tom Nook” “Tomnooki” “Tanuki”...
...consider my mind blown! 🤯🤯
He also conjures things out of leaves like a tanuki. And Redd is a kitsune, and IIRC are considered more malevolent than tanukis. His symbol is a different kind of leaf. Tanukis and kitsune aren't fond of each other.
Thank you for making this... I’m a security guard for a hospital so hours have been rough.. therefore: no time to play acnh that much. 😔 hearing you talk about your unique nostalgia and how it varies and differs and somewhat similar to my experience with population growing and the other titles really brought a smile to my face during these hard times. thank you :’)
Animal Crossing is like junk food, you know you shouldn’t put that much time into it, but you keep going anyway.
But its the good type of junk food
@Villager so, healthy junk food?
@@ChickenMcKicken yes
It’s comfort food. It’s bad for your health, but feels too good to not consume.
Yes James. The Tom Nook name thing did, in fact, blow my mind.
I love how you made the experience of playing Animal Crossing less depressive and panic induced and more relaxed and laid back, something that people seem to forget about AC when currently talking about it. Even in the pressing times, seeing you still be the cool and chillax dude warms my heart.
6:05 like how everyone complains that Amiibo never added much, but when a game did make the Amiibo bonus interesting people started would complain that exact argument XD
Except maybe Metroid Samus Returns... that had no business locking content behind Amiibo.
It’s because you can’t put too much locked behind amiibo. It’s surprisingly tricky to have amiibo content in games. You can’t have too little, and you can’t have too much. The perfect solution to this would be an amiibo special game. A game where you don’t have to pay to enjoy the game, but to get a character you want. Think Disney Infinity, but not cancelled.
@@Danbo22987 the best compromise would probably be for nintendo to manufacture more than 20 units at any given time that are all instantly bought and resold for 2,000% on ebay
@@Danbo22987 except that amiibo scalping has been a problem long before the pandemic
@@dirtfriend The only way to really prevent scalping is to either shut down all the ways people could conceivably sell secondhand, or make SO MANY that they couldn't possibly afford to buy them all, which would also be way more than anyone would ever actually want to buy.
My favorite memory was getting the game, I had asked my mom for two games, Tales of Symphonia, and Timesplitters.
My mom got Animal Crossing instead of Timesplitters cause she heard it was a violent game(at the time she didn;t trust me or my sister enough to get violent games). I was mad the entire car ride home up until I played both games.
They are now both my favorite series of all time.
The way you say “card” makes you sound really Canadian
Edit: Teletoon and YTV? Yeah that explains it lol
He is Canadian. =)
Seeing how much anyone can modify their island now is really the one thing that's got me wanting this game. Really creative people in New Leaf could use the touch screen stuff to draw roads and paths to lay down, but it was still pretty limited and you were at the mercy of RNG where your villagers decided to plop down their houses. Now you can pretty much shape your island in any way you see fit, as far as I can tell anyways. That one thing adds so much personality, it's like your entire town is an extension of what used to be just throwing furniture down in your house. This series is also super wholesome and cute, it's tough to say no to that.
4:25 Fun fact, here in Italy (but I guess it's the same throughout Europe) the memory card didn't have either the Gyroid or Rover on it. Instead, we got K.K. Slider playing his guitar under a tree.
This man has got to have one of the most soothing voices I've ever heard.
Indeed, he is relaxing to listen to.
You forgot to mention the Startropics reference that Gulliver makes when you save him! He mentions Coralcola!

@@NitroRad
I was so excited when I saw it! I was like "Nintendo didn't forget about you Startropics!"
Brand recognition. Literally the reason I swapped the games packed with my Nintendo DS Lite for Rayman DS. I wanted something familiar.
Now that I have the PC and PS2 versions, I knew it was time to move on. But at the time, I had yet to have a good enough PC to really enjoy it any other way.
The warmth and the empathy of this video makes me watch it everytime I feel that I'm the only one finding comfort in a video game like Animal Crossing. The DS version got me through military service and I'm so grateful for that
While everyone who was in the AC fandom seemed to fall off at the release of City Folk; that was the first game that I played; so City Folk *was* my Wild World haha.
So, yeah, I love City Folk a lot. I probably have the same sort of nostalgia for City Folk that everyone else has for Wild World/AC on the Gamecube.
I love that the visual representations of your dreams take place in Dreams.
When you started talking about your save being corrupted and losing everything you had worked hard for hit me bad. I had wild world for the DS, my grandmother gave it to me for my 10th birthday. She probably bought it because it was for kids. When I first tried it out I did not like it I was more interested in what my father got me called Orcs and Elves. Lol but one rainy afternoon I decided to give Wild World a try and well it's safe to say I fell in love with the game. Every waking moment I had it was to play Animal Crossing. I would sometimes wake up early just to play the game and talk to my villagers. I spent a lot of time playing Animal Crossing. Till one day my dad wanted to try it out because he saw how much I was playing it and well he didn't know but he accidentally deleted my town and made a new one. I was devastated like all those fun times I had were gone, those memories I shared with my villagers, my hard work, my town. Everything it was all gone. I was so sad I could've cried.
This was honestly wholesome to watch.
Although I only played the original Animal crossing I still appreciate its growth. I only learned of the series through my youngest-older brother who bought it on Easter 14 years ago.
Which I spent days doing nothing but watching him play it, appreciating the simple fun I had compared to my regularly burdensome and hectic life. With Bob and Sable being my favorite villagers.
I've never been interested into Animal Crossing but this video is starting to change my mind. Either way, great video I love the type that go into the more personal aspect than professional ones when it comes to video games or any other topic.
And then we have me at 10-11 years old where I needed to have my mother next to me to translate Conker's Bad Fur Day since I didn't speak English.
She thought it was funny as hell xD Granted, she did do the occasional eye roll every now and then xD
..what does this have to do with animal crossing

Thank you for making this video. It reminds me of the best memories I have from being a kid. I’ve lost my OG files for the GC and DS games, which I played the most. It makes me feel better that I’m not alone in that, bc those town files meant so much to me. Also, animal crossing forums back in like ‘07 was the best way to get friend codes. I made sooo many online friends that way, some of which I’ve reconnected with for new horizons!
I really love this video!! It feels so nostalgic and warm to hear you relive your experiences with the series-- thank you for opening up and sharing with us!
That 6:05 voice made me so happy :D
Tom Nook talked like an abusive father in the original and first impressions last forever like a scar that never heals.
if you consider the first game's tom nook "an abusive father" then you actually have no idea what the difference between a stern father and abusive father is lmao
@@theSato well they didnt say he was an abusive father, just that he talked like one
@@KOTEBANAROT Yes, verbal / emotional abuse. It's still a little scary to be talked to like that when your little, especially if that's actually happened to you IRL. But, in the new games that talk to completely gone. It's kinda like the Resetti thing but they changed him much quicker.
To be honest this is reminding me of my dad and how he's starting to learn to change. I thought he never would but he is... a little... he's trying at least. ^^"
@@theSato it's likely just an exaggeration made for a youtube comment...
but to nitpick, if you think that there is a specific way that "abusive fathers" talk and that you can identify them by that, you have no experience and no place to talk over someone's experiences.
@@slugmilk4063 It was an exaggeration, however even in an exaggerating sense, it wasn't really 'abusive father' like even a little..
And no, there isn't a golden "single specific way", of course every drunk father that beats their child could have a different manner of speaking. However we're only talking about "verbally abusive" here since .. well, thats the only relevant part here.
I've done therapy for quite a lot of people and have a firm grasp of psychology. I have enough secondhand experience and knowledge to make my claim, and every bit of a 'place' to make this statement X3

That reminds me of when I was younger as well- my brother and I named our character Asshole. And our town was called Asstown. My dad saw what we had named it, and pretty much said the same thing your dad did. Yep. XD
Aside from that, my brother and I weren't very good at the first game, but we did still play it a lot. We probably started a new town every other month. Although I still remember some of the villagers we had in our first town; Scoot, Tangy, Vladimir, and Quetzal.
It was the first time we had ever played the game, so we didn't really know what to expect and going into the villagers' houses was very interesting and amusing because Vladimir's was a weird mix of playground toys and construction equipment, and Scoot literally just had some grass flooring and a sprinkler. We were like "what the heck, these animals LIVE like this?!" and we just found it hilarious.
We also loved sending mean letters to villagers, but more often than not, they would just say that they didn't understand what we were trying to say, but thanks for the letter anyway.
We also loved pissing off Tangy. XD
And we were terrified of Booker for some reason. I dunno, just the way he would follow you around the police station was a little unnerving for us. :P
Lastly we had a cheat book that we got from one of our school bookfairs, and it had a bunch of codes for rare Nintendo items that we could get from Tom Nook, so we used those to decorate our house and time-traveled quite a bit because we could only redeem one code a day.
And that's about it! The only other games in the series I have played are New Leaf and New Horizons, both of which are excellent.
My favorite part of all your videos are the little story’s you’ve had with each game and this was like a whole video of that. Hope you make more like this
What a wholesome, nostalgic video! I used to play the Gamecube Animal Crossing with my mom... I feel so sentimental when I see Animal Crossing gameplay.
I've never got into Animal Crossing. To be honest, I can't even see me playing it... But, seeing you talk about it with this much passion and honesty got me interested a little bit. I also love little secrets in games, maybe that's why I've spend so many hours in Club Penguin...

God, I remember when I played City Folk/Let’s go to the city, I was donating like 5 new fish, and 2 new fossils. I was SO close to completing the museum, when all of a sudden, my brother walks in and TURNS OFF the Wii. What the fu**. This is the first video I'm watching of yours and it was very charming. How personal and informative it was was great and it answered the question I ask when viewing new content creators right away. What kind of person is this creator and what kind of personality do they bring their content. Getting to see something more genuine, let alone covering a series so personal to myself as well was a great way start out for me. Will be looking at your other stuff for sure.

Loved the video, Nitrorad. I always appreciate it when you talk about your personal experiences with certain games.

I liked it that you had like some scenes with a drawing of you animating to your talking and these Dreams scenes. It's a nice idea to watch some of your videos just talking about a series that you just like and don't feel pressured to do a honest review.
I love this video, I wouldn't mind having more stuff like this that's just you talking about video game memories. It's really cozy.
this is such a chill video! love the second or two of club penguin footage as well
Of course this video isn't like your normal videos. Animal Crossing isn't your typical kind of game, and I think this format suited the series perfectly! And that Matryoska story made me unbelievably happy. Thank you for sharing that story!
You and Brady should do more '100 things I like about...' videos. I loved the positivity of that video
10:58 It literally took me until the latter half of LAST YEAR to find out that you could pick up items in the menu by pressing L in the GC AC. I used to always just select the item and select Grab instead.
I honestly love these more personal, retrospective videos. This and the Canadian TV one are some of my favourite videos on the channel. I’d love to see more like this.
this video got me to think about my own childhood. wow i mean im sill in my childhood but animal crossing is a part of my life too that brought so much to me. i grew up with the wii and ds and this story made me emotional.
One easter egg I always enjoyed in animal crossing is in every game, if you visit the nook store in the last 10 minutes of them being open, the game plays an orchestrated version of the shop theme. It's such a small detail but the orchestral theme is always so calming and wholesome sounding. I always imagined it represents tom nook or timmy and tommy having a peaceful end to their long day of work.
Gonna be perfectly honest, I would LOVE to see more of this kind of thing. It was super heartwarming and wholesome.
