Just had my favorite set of ear buds go out on me tonight! GLAD i found your video, Thank you for covering the how 2's Some other channels are blaming ear wax and dirty ports, but that's not it at all. I know this will fix it. THANKS again.
Good video! I just repaired some $A10 earbuds with mic. They had separated at the splitter, after which the mic is on the cable to the left earbud. I thought I'd got it right, but then discovered (via a web site) that the stripey mic wire was actually a combo "copper" and blue coloured wire. I had to very carefully separate the blue and copper-strands (with a sewing pin actually), and then connect the 4 hair-thin blue ones to the thicker blue one coming from the plug. After that, copper went to join the other copper ones (ground in this case). The main point is, if you see a "stripey" wire, it's probably 2 conductors. The site I looked at showed such a cable (but RED and copper striped). I soldered everything, and bound all 3 cables together tightly before covering the whole thing in heatshrink tubing.
Wow this was very helpful though I decided to solder the wires together :). You did clear instructions and I was surprised how easy it was even though I have never really worked with wires etc ! :)

Thank you very much for helping me to crack the earphone code, because I tried it once but without cleaning the wires and it didn't work, but now I know so thank you!

@RichsMethods Hi. I also have a broken ear piece. But, I think the mic and plug are still working. Its just that the ear piece in the mic area is the one that's not working. And I think I accidentally pulled it. Could you please help me? Thank you. I'll wait for your reply. :)
So the red and green wire with copper in the middle. You say just connect it. So do I un twist the red and green off and then expose the copper underneath and re twist the red and green that was already wrapped back around it and then connect it or do I just get to the center copper and and go from there
Very informative, but I would have liked to know the equivalent connection to the four segmented headphone jack.In other words which connector on the jack is spks rt and lt, gnd and mic.
Hey!! I've an earphone that I intend to repair. One cable has red, green, blue and copper coloured wires. So there's no prob here. But the another cable has a red, blue, copper and copper twisted with white wires. So I'm confused what the connections should be. Please help!!!!!!!
First, untwist a portion of the copper wire from the white wire then connect in the following order: Red to Red, Green to Blue, the Blue on the first wire listed above goes with the either the white wire or the copper twisted wires Then the Copper wire on the first wire listed above goes with either the copper twisted wire or the white wire. I have the apple earphones with remote and mic that came with a 2014 iPhone 4S (headset model DTY3483A). The first problem was the play/pause button would go off randomly. Then the right speaker quit working and then the left one got a short and I have to hold the cable next to the plug for it to work. Mic and volume and next/previous controls never worked on samsung (worked fine on an iphone of course). The wires inside are red, green, red/copper striped, green/copper striped, red/green striped with copper inside, and white (from where I opened the plastic the white wasn't inside the red/green striped). What order should I connect them in? And to convert from apple (ctia) to samsung (omtp) I would just switch the 2nd R and the S?
Can you make some explanations on some types of earpiece cause i bought a cheap head phones with mic for my phone and i have to press the mic's button just to hear the sounds more clear.
Your videos have been very informative, but I'm trying to do something a little different and I hope you can help. I'm actually trying to make my own PS4 chat cable for my turtle beach headsets. If you're not much of a gamer, basically I'm trying to fix is a single speaker (left) and mic headset. The plug is a TRRS has a red cable, a copper cable (with a green cable in center) and another red cable with a littler copper wrapped around it. I can't seem to identify the mic cable. On the turtle beach side, I have 3 cables; red (speaker), white (mic), and silver (ground).
So I own a pair of headphones (with a MIC) and I have it split style (if that makes any sense) and the wires consist of Green Mixed with Copper, Red, Blue, Green and bunch of other copper wire. However the other wire I'm attaching it to consists of Green, Red, Blue and Copper. I was wondering how I should connect them.
So I'm attempting to do this myself and I have two different turtle beach headphones one has a red, green, copper, white, red and green but the other one I cut open has a slightly different copper, red, green, red and gold(?) They are both TRRS so they should work I'm just a little lost where to go next
Save your 5$ and just find where your short is and then splice & reconnect!! Then you keep all parts to your earbuds OEM!! IDK just kinnda seems more logical to me....BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EXPLAINING VERY WELL THE PINOUT FOR THE HEADPHONE & MIC WIRES!! For real I have clicked on over 20-30 videos trying to learn this information!! So thx again man!! /like & sub
Hi Rich, my right earbud is shorting out. I can't find the short anywhere on the wire, even 5-6 inches from the plug, but pushing the wire towards the bud/speaker on the right side will make it work again until it's shaken too much. Will this method be appropriate for this headphone if I have another plug?
So the sound comes back when you push the wire near the earbud? If that is so, then this method might not work. You might have a short near and/or in the earbud. If that is case, then you'll have to dismantle the earbud and see if you can re-solder the wires back to the earbud (after cutting out the bad portion).
RichsMethods Yeah, you have to twist the bud a bit while it's in your ear until it works again. Do you have any tips for dismantling the ear bud? Thanks for the reply.
hey,richard... tell me how to repair samsung note 2 headphone with mic jack repair. it has 1 copper 1 green 1 red 1 black wire... suggest me the video.
Hi RichsMethods I have a Logitech H150 and I want to change the plug with my unbroken samsung earphone, since it has a TRRS plug. I wanna use it on my new laptop, and it only supports the TRRS plugs instead of the conventional 2 green and pink plugs for the headphone and mic. As I peeled of the wire on the H150, I have a green wire, a twisted red and blue, another twisted copper and blue, along with a red wire which is covered with copper and some thread. While my samsung earphones has only3 at first since there's a black wire covered in copper wire along with the red and green. Please tell me which wire should go with each other. Thanks a lot! It would really be of much help.
It works but I have an red, blue, green and the brown or copper? When I connected all the wires except for the brown/copper and green, I accidentally opposite them and it suddenly increases sound into left and what I heard the most in the left headphone is the vocal and the right is the instrumental, is that ok?, it both increases the left and the right headphone.
Just cut them off. They are there for insulation and to strengthen the cord. If you place a good layer of electrical tape over the wire you should be fine.
Got some expensive headphones and broke the plug and I've been too lazy to go get them fixed for a couple of years now. Now I'm listening to the rest of the video with them. I can't thank you enough.

Red to Red,
Green to Blue,
the Blue on the first wire listed above goes with the either the white wire or the copper twisted wires

You might have to temporarily connect some of the wires to do some troubleshooting to determine if the copper twisted wisted wire goes with either the Blue wire or the Copper Wire on the first set.

Yea but you will have a wire dangling or if the other way around the mic wont work

Good information 👍👍👍
thank you Richard thank god for you
After long time watching it
THANK YOOOOU

Right when you said, "Shake the wire near the plug" I did that, and headphone started working, and I didn't need to change it :0

Omg that worked i not joking!!!! Thank you so so much!
Christine Sabella That's awesome! It feels so good to fix them!!!
Hhhh yes i was never good at that , your so good at explaining!! Thank you😀
Christine Sabella :)
Hello Sir,
What is the purpose of reinforced thread inside wire. How to handle them while soldering
Just cut them off. They are there for insulation and to strengthen the cord. If you place a good layer of electrical tape over the wire you should be fine.
superb tutorial!
Thanks for the comment!
