It worked! To the people saying just buy a new pair: This was my first time ever taking apart a pair of headphones or using a soldering iron and it took about 45 minutes going very slowly. Most people already have pliers and I didn't have wire strippers so I used wire cutters. In total I only had to buy a soldering iron and some solder which were $25 total. Paying $25 and spending 45 minutes fixing them is a lot better than spending $150 on a new pair. Plus now I have everything I need so the next time I need to fix a pair I am good to go.
RichsMethods how do you prevent this from happening. since i watched this video ive broken 3 headphones because of this. and since i am an audiophile, i dont want to do this every time my 300 dollar headphones get bent. so how do you prevent it, are there protectors or anything because its getting really anoying
Kevin Tang Pretty much just baby your headphones as much as possible. I keep mine in a case when I'm not using them. I NEVER wrap them tightly. Usually I just fold the wire gently and place in a small zippered case. Try to prevent pulling on the cord, and always grasp them at the plug.
Kevin Tang Some things you might want to try 1 Wrap some insulating tape to stiffen the wire-pin junction to prevent bending 2 Avoid bending at this point 4 when soldering, a spot of flux at the contact point helps, otherwise tinning before is ideal. 5 bending the earth terminal away helps in soldering the 2 signal wires; 6 If you get down to soldering you could add a heat shrink sleeve at the wire jack junction
try this model. philips she3590. it has been working for me for close to a year up until i lost it 2 days ago. without hesitation, i bought another one in a different color. it's cheap (around 10 bucks) and it sounds good, and it lasts for a very long time. hope i helped. :)
i feel your pain bro :( the time i bought an original headset it last 5 months than a year so when i bought a 2nd original headset(i have a fake head set so when it broke i tried to fix the wires from the plug to the earphones but i works too!)i taped the plug with some electrical tape ( i made it look not obvious because it's emberassing) and glued it (super glue.... why not?!?) and it lasted 2 years because i lost it but it's worth the time though..
fire is faster to remove the coating btw also, you can do a continuity test with a multimeter, the tip of the headphones left, next is right, and the last part is ground. if it's a combo jack it's left right ground and mic, if your multimeter doesn't have a continuity test, you can test resistance and it's the same thing as continuity test, if you get a resistance = a circuit loop is closed. That's how you test what part is which.
this is by far the most common headphone malfunction. Im surprised they havent invented some sort of solution for this to never happen.. they should use reinforced wires or some kind of super protection at the end of the wire/jack on all headphone / earbud devices.
Vojtěch Konderla true but some 3rd company should have come out with a product to make the area where the jack meets the wire stronger. What i will be doing in the future is wrapping that entire area with black electrical tape until its nice and strong and protected because im SO sick of this happening , ive gone through a dozen or so because of this problem since the early 90s
+1XbatistaX1 Rocknexus is correct. However, the reason the sound is lower in the one ear is because you have short in your wire. If you feel up to it, I'd replace your plug.
Its really cheap for this stuff, I'm fixing mine right now and I did not even spend a single dollar on a new pair. Anyways your name explains why you decided to buy a new pair, you failure.
Dude a plug is like 99c or less I have a wire stripper but normal strippers work better and soldering gun costs like 15 for a whole kit including shoulder sucker, stand, 2 strimmers, 2 spear wires, shoulder gun cleaner, sharp teasers, screw driver, 6 different screw bits
+Nickolie-psn Newell I got these awesome philips earphones SHQ3200 they last a long time and the wire is underlayed with kevlar but I just killed mine with water otherwise the best ones I've got so far

Dude, you soldering game really sucks. You don't "just dab it on." Best method: After the soldering iron is hot, hold the tip of the iron to the connection point for a few seconds, then carefully touch the solder wire right where the iron and your wire meets the connector. Great video. The replacement plug end can be used over and over. I just fixed an expensive headphone with a plug I bought online from china and it works perfectly. Sure the initial investment of purchasing a soldering kit is a pain but it will work for repairing kids toys and many other items. Make sure you have some flux paste to get the solder to flow onto the parts. Also make sure the soldered wire doesnt touch the screw on cover or it will short and you will only get sound from one earphone. Electrical tape wrapped around outside will separate from cover. Thanks Rich
The plug finally went out on my pair of AKGs recently after eleven years of use. I'd gotten so used to them in all that time that even though I bought a new pair of the same, they just didn't sound right for mixing. I'm glad to find out I can just fix my old pair then.
I f***** it up and wired it the wrong way round. Now the sound that should be going through my left ear is going through my right ear and vice-versa. 😭

great tutorial, may I add a few tips: 1. Dont strip back enamel, just solder right over it, it will penetrate the enamel insulation with no problem. 2. Use some nail clippers (or dedicated mini side cutters) to clean up solder and excess wires. much cleaner than scissors. 3.When soldering, the solder will wick toward the heat so its best to heat the base then add the wire and solder on top, it will wick through the wire to the base and wont create a cold solder joint, and use flux when you can, it keeps the solder from rolling right off chrome plating. 4. The jack has a crimp on the end, use it! Crimp the cable with pliers or a crimper (the ones shown have a weird U shaped press, thats the crimper) its better than hot glue and youll be able to R&R that jack again in 6 months when they fail again. They always seem to break right at the jack base so always start looking there. Those that say buy new ones should consider that some of these ear buds cost up to $1000, (google Shure SE846) and tossing them due to an open is out of the question.
*Ascends from the top of the comment section wearing white robe* Everyone. Stop your commenting. I Have come. Im the common sense dude who no one agrees with. Listen, Spend 100 to 150 dollars on a pair of headphones. Its the last headphones u will ever need in your life. you will eventually break so many headphones that u will be paying 150 dollars! Do it! *Descends into hated and unseen comments*
Great video. I thought I knew how to rewire headphones and could never get them to work (I didn't know those little green and red wires had enamel on them). Loved the guy's suggestion to burn off the enamel. Thanks, Rich. You rule!
Thank you! i had it all covered EXCEPT for the step where you removed the color coating of the wires. That i didn't know and was the problem with my attempts to reapir my old headphones
Thank you! This helped so much and now my headphones are working again. Your tutorial was awesomely easy to follow and steps were very clear. Only con is that sometimes the camera is a little out of focus, but everything else is amazing! Thanks. :)
I went through the pairs of bose ear buds in 9 months, I was pissed when bose wouldn't replace or repair. finally I still have them, now I can fix them, good thing i saved the last pair.
I've got about 10 pairs of headphones waiting to be repaired. Gonna have a session on it. Totally worth the time and money. Maybe you silly haters can just borrow someone else's tools for the job, or repair all your mates headphones with the gear you buy, making yourself useful in your community, saving electrical landfill, and getting one over The Man with your rad fixer skillz? Thanks Rich for the vid.
Good job on the video. Just to let you know that the area that you put the hot glue on is an area that you can crimp those ends together to keep the wire in place. Great job on the vid!
Hey man! thanks for the video. I have the bose ie2 earphones and what broke is the 9mm plug, like the actual metal exposed plug that goes into the phone, not the wires or anything inside. And before I try to repair it i'd like to know if I'm gonna loose the sound quality if I use a new (non Bose) plug. Cheers!
Great Video My Brother use to fix my ear phones all the time but unfortunate he passed away. Instead of a housing he would make a mold out of some kind of hard putty for the jack.
+1 on using hot glue for holding it all together (I'm a bit more generous on it though). I also try to get replacement plugs with sleeves that fit nice and tidy on the cable, and in the case where the cable is either smaller or too big to use the sleeve I put on one or more layers of cable shrink wrap (staged when more than one) which gives a more professional finish and prevent the cable from over-bending at the plug.
Hey! My earbud's left side/speaker is a lot quiter than the right one. It does not goes mute in any position, it's only quiter. What do you think, the problem is in the plug? Should i replace it to a new one like in this video?
I have a problem, I got these headphones for Christmas and I've been very careful with it, but all of a sudden today there was a problem at the very tip where you plug it in. There is only sound if it is at a certain angle😐 which is rediculous because I have barely touched it😐 what do you think the problem is in it?
Great tutorial :) The jack is the most vulnerable area . This is the spot that gets broken most of the time. Unfortunately, the jacks on the market are very poor quality and will decrease the sound quality significantly if you choose to replace the original with those.
Hey Rich, I have a pair of Bose SIE2i Sport Headphones - Blue and I purchased the 3.5mm TRRS Male Solder Connector - Plastic from Show Me Cables. I'm clear as to where to soldier the copper wire, but not sure where to soldier the other three. I have a Red wire, a Blue wire, and a White wire that's shielded by some green hairy material. If I'm holding the end that goes into my iPhone and looking down the shaft, first I see where I would soldier the copper wire, then there are (3) three prongs where I guess I would need to soldier the other three colored wires. One on the left, One on the right, and one at the top. (I'm trying to really write a clear picture for you) Which color wire goes to each of these three prongs? Your help is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you
hey can you do a video on mmcx connector installation in IEMs that have soldered cables? I got a faulty Rock Zircons IEM (no sound on right side earphone) so I was thinking to install mmcx inside the rock zircons. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you very much, my headphones dont wear out, the wires just break, I think that this wire weakness is built in, so that you have to buy new ones, but cant claim on the guarantee. any way I now have a few hours work trying to to get my nice earphones working again.some were expensive, and well worth doing the repair. and also its very satisfying to repair things with your hands. many regards Colin. UK.
i have an HTC headphones of 1400 rs & have the same problem near the pin & now i have replaced the pin now its working awesome thanks buddy 100 likes.................)
i have the same brand but mine is the one that controls the volume up and down/stop and play/handsfree earbuds..awesome bose earbuds and i love them! Can u help me how to fix the loose wire from the right side (where the controls are located )it got pulled when i dropped my cellphone with the earbuds(duh)still attached to my cellphone.I wonder if you could help me or make a video for this problem?please and thanks...your videos are really easy to understand and not boring!more power to you!thanks!
I'm having the same problem. what happens though is that there is a position that I might be in and both ears get music, but once I move a little bit, only the right side works.
Pro tip: Instead of sanding off the enamel of the signal wires, melt it off using a lighter or torch. Good video btw, well made and instructions were clear.
Would this work with the Audio Technica ANC33iS? They are noise cancelling earbuds, so I'm not sure if there would be extra cables I would need to fix.
Great lesson, thanks! I've had some good headphones years ago that I threw out but wish I had kept them. Now, I have a set of Fostex headphones but the wire came loose at the speaker. I'm not sure how to fix that one.
mysteryjesus The difficulty of the repair depends upon how much wire you have left over. If there is enough wire, you could try this video: "ruclips.net/video/N-Lpkikdo3Y/видео.html". Good luck!
RichsMethods I'm fixing a pair of Bose TP-1A headphones now. There's some insulation in there. I forgot the sandpaper so I'm just going to use a lighter and hopefully that removes all the enamel.
Good video and great comments. Ultimately, if you are going to pay a premium for head phones you have to treat them like a baby. One practice, which took me a long time to do habitually, was to actually place the ear buds in their case when I wasn't using them. It only takes a minute and will increase the longevity of your head phones. Also, inquire about any applicable warranty by the seller. I know for a fact that Bose, or any other premium head phone manufacturer, is making buku bucks from these products and we the consumers should never play the role of sucker by purchasing a new pair every year. Screw that.
Tank you very much :) Fixed all my headphones now :D I was told that it is not doable and I was buying new headphones each time.. I regret that I was so ignorant not to search the RUclips for the fix....
Hey, I hope you can help me out; please? When I plug in my earphones, I can hear the buzz-click sound from the earpieces that signify that it's connected, however, the audio still comes from the mobile speakers. They're a spare HTC set (I'm not sure for which handset) that I've been using for three months or so. I've tried plugging in other earphones (they were faulty, too, with audio from only one piece) but they didn't have this problem. I can try this same thing, right?
I have the opposite issue with my headphones , the jack seems to work " okay " although i'm not sure , but to get all the sound back ( i only have a distant partial sound ) i need to twist / bend the part of the wire that connect to the actual headphones all the way up the cable . Should i replace the jack or does it require some more complex thing to do ? Because it's a Razer Black Shark headset and it's worth a handful of money so i'd rather try to fix it rather than buy a new one :/
well i have sony walkman earhones dude bt i got red nd blue wire comming out of my right earplug so what to do with that....the left plug has copper and green but the right one has copper red and green
Alright, so I have a Sony Stereo MDR-ZX100 headphone and it's having a similar problem: left ear has no sound. Unfortunately there's no sound even when I twist around the cord searching for it. I would I solve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It worked! To the people saying just buy a new pair: This was my first time ever taking apart a pair of headphones or using a soldering iron and it took about 45 minutes going very slowly. how do you prevent this from happening. since i watched this video ive broken 3 headphones because of this. and since i am an audiophile, i dont want to do this every time my 300 dollar headphones get bent. so how do you prevent it, are there protectors or anything because its getting really anoying

Some things you might want to try
1 Wrap some insulating tape to stiffen the wire-pin junction to prevent bending
2 Avoid bending at this point
4 when soldering, a spot of flux at the contact point helps, otherwise tinning before is ideal.
5 bending the earth terminal away helps in soldering the 2 signal wires;
6 If you get down to soldering you could add a heat shrink sleeve at the wire jack junction

What if it happens on bluetooth headphones?

Callumissenpai Oh what and not allow you to have an Epic View into My oh so creative mind? I Think Not!
Or you can just get a new pair of headphones for less money u just spent on tools
If you listen to music through $10 headphones, you're not really listening to music.
TobiasMakesNoise hey man if I paid $99 do you think I should repair them?
Junior Collantes easily
I might as well get my engineering degree while I'm at it
Dj cow led You should get a brain, while you are at it too.
Literally the simplest instructions and so basic. I wish degrees were this easy!
Great video. I thought I knew how to rewire headphones and could never get them to work (I didn't know those little green and red wires had enamel on them). Loved the guy's suggestion to burn off the enamel. Thanks, Rich. You rule!
fuck .. that ..just buy new ones..
you can just go and buy new earbuds for 15 bucks instead of buying $25 worth of tools to fix a piece of junk
My bose in ears cost 120 bucks
i have beats earphones HOW?
Alyssa Covarrubias then your unlucky
would you rather buy loads more of those and spoil every one of it or buy those "junk" and fix your earpiece for good?
Most of people have such equipment at home. The soldering iron may be helpful in other areas, so you could consider buying it.
aint nobody has time for this😧
Jahmirra Phillips or you can learn to be patient
Thank you! i had it all covered EXCEPT for the step where you removed the color coating of the wires. That i didn't know and was the problem with my attempts to reapir my old headphones
Or buy new headphones
Yeah
what if they cost like $100?
+Richard Kim buy knock offs
Thank you! This helped so much and now my headphones are working again. Your tutorial was awesomely easy to follow and steps were very clear. Only con is that sometimes the camera is a little out of focus, but everything else is amazing! Thanks. :)
I love you
I went through the pairs of bose ear buds in 9 months, I was pissed when bose wouldn't replace or repair. finally I still have them, now I can fix them, good thing i saved the last pair.
I just watched this while I was fixing mine.
I knew what I was doing but having a voice in the background helped.
so thanks for speaking I guess. :)
How do you fix it?
Hey thanks, your tip with the sandpaper did it for me, i first tried to burn the enamel off but that was a mess and soldering was quite impossible
Thanks, I figured this out later. I show crimping the wire in my newer videos. Thanks again for watching!
Hey man! thanks for the video.
That was a great tutorial. Thank you so much!
I have 2 Skullcandy Headphones which are not working. I'm going to fix them using this tutorial.
MusicForLivin That's awesome! Thanks for the compliment.
Yesterday I needed learn something like that. The tutor I found on Vis-a-Vis (mobile app), saved me. Thank you for great video ))
what a coincidence when I opened this video both of my ear buds are working now ur magical
Hey! My earbud's left side/speaker is a lot quiter than the right one. It does not goes mute in any position, it's only quiter. What do you think, the problem is in the plug? Should i replace it to a new one like in this video?
Just fixed my headphones and they are working as new! Thank you!
hey richsmethod the rest phones you shown at last of video of Sony, can you tell how to clean it for rest wax please. thanks great video.
I have a problem,
I got these headphones for Christmas and I've been very careful with it, but all of a sudden today there was a problem at the very tip where you plug it in.
Thank you
Good technical advice and demonstration. I going to fix mine (head phones) now instead of throwing them away.
+Alvertos B.P. That's awesome! Thanks for watching. I'm hoping to make new content soon.
hey can you do a video on mmcx connector installation in IEMs that have soldered cables?
I can hear music but not voices!! You know how to fix it? Appreciate your effort.
thx brandon rogers is this what you do when you dont upload the funny videos you do
I came here becoz my headphones are broken and you explain this tut with ur mouth ..thanq sooo much
i have the same brand but mine is the one that controls the volume up and down/stop and play/handsfree earbuds..awesome bose earbuds and i love them!
Thanks for the tip. I did this in my subsequent headphone videos.
I forgot the sandpaper so I'm just going to use a lighter and hopefully that removes all the enamel.
mysteryjesus ya lighter is easier. . but blow it out quickly
shadoo25
I did but I am pretty convinced that I need to use sandpaper for the enamel which keeps melting off and ruining my solder job.
How about when the wire around the earphones themselves are the sensitive ones?
rich, will this work for apple earphones? the problem with mine is the jack itself
Screw that.
I did what you showed us and IT WORKED! Thanks!
Tank you very much :) Fixed all my headphones now :D I was told that it is not doable and I was buying new headphones each time.. I regret that I was so ignorant not to search the RUclips for the fix....
plus I always put a small piece of heat shrink tubing over shaft of the plug just helps to keep things from touching and shorting out
Awesome-!!!!!!! Thank you! Can't wait to try this. You explain everything so clearly.
I can try this same thing, right?
thank you brother,i may learned again a new additional knowledge for today coming from you.Keep up the good essence of u you tube...from phils
Nice one dude. I hope it will work for my Bose earphones!
Will you still be able to use a microphone if it's a headset?
Very instructive video. Thanks for posting. You've helped me save my very pricy TDK headphones. Thanks-a-lot!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video! Very informative, and will save me 80 bucks for new Bose headphones!
Alright, so I have a Sony Stereo MDR-ZX100 headphone and it's having a similar problem: left ear has no sound. Unfortunately there's no sound even when I twist around the cord searching for it. I would I solve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
