Mr. Rich, Just to give you an idea of who is addressing you, my name is Harrison, and I'm a 22 year old student at the University of Alabama. I have a set of relatively simple, but good quality Logitech speakers. The auxiliary input had been getting worse over time, in terms of connection. Eventually it, and in turn the speakers, became nearly useless. Thanks to your easy and descriptive instructions, I managed to cut the wires' imperfections out and reinstall a new jack - and for much cheaper than buying a new set. The speakers work like new, and I just wanted to give you some credit for the help! Your video is much appreciated.
I always come back to your video when I repair my headphones so I can remember the easy steps. Works every time for me. Saved me a looot of money. Thanks man!
I was tired of buying new computer speakers whenever the plug went bad, so I was drawn to a solution that did not involve soldering. When trying this, I had to think a bit when my exposed wires didn't match exactly. I had a green and a white (?) wire and a bunch of "silver" colored wires that I thought was the "fluff." Turns out that it was not fluff, but the ground wires. The configuration that worked for me was to let the green wire be the Green one and assume the white wire to be analagous to the Red one. When I used the disparate silver wires as ground, it worked! Thank you so much for helping me do this.
Good tutorial. Only thing I'd say that I learned the hard way is that you have to carefully measure how much wire you are going to strip and ultimately twist. Each one is a different length and if you end up w/ excess wire/slack from one wire as i did (in my case ground), the longer wire will touch another. In my case the ground was crowding the others when i tried to put the insulator on and as a result both channels came in super weak. So, moral of the story, measure twice cut once.
Thank you!!! I was quoted $35 (half hour service) for a $20 Sennheiser. I just could not live with it but I had to fix my headphones. You saved me tons of money! I got the wire stripper at the dollar store too!
Good job Rich, through your very clear instructions I repaired my Bose headset. I contacted 6 places to do the repair and out of desperation I went to Radio Shack as you suggested. They work great again. Thanks.
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!!..... LOVE how you explained what all the parts are in both the wire and the plug AND went through all the steps in great detail. I'm so happy that I came across your website....I have a pair of fairly expensive ($160) Sony earbuds and I damaged the plug when it dropped into the elliptical machine. I called Sony to see if they repaired them and they don't, so I was thrilled to learn that I can fix them myself for less than $10.00!!! Thank you!!
Don't forget to make a loop in the wire somewhere close to where the housing would end. That'll prevent you from tearing the wires should you pull on the cable.
Thank you for this DIY video. I am a headphone repairing bandit now. This will save me hundreds of dollars because I do music production and I have a few sets of headphones that I was going to trash before I found this video. Thank you and God bless. Peace.
Thanks for making and sharing this awesome video! I paid quite a bit of money to get my westone earphones fixed but the guy used the wrong jack size (a fraction smaller than 3.5 mm) so my earphones never connected properly. Thanks to this video, I can go ahead and get them fixed on my own!
I watched about a dozen videos on how to repair my computer speaker plug before doing it and this video was the best. And using the no solder plug is a great find for me as I am terrible at soldering. Awesome job!.
Really like how you go slow & explain in detail how to fix this & answer any problems u cd have. Very well done! I give u two thumbs.👍👍 & will continue to come to your site for answers. One more thing it was great to find a fix that one did not need a soldering gun, nt everyone had one laying around. Very helpful!
Worked great, was able to save real nice pair of Klipsch ear buds doing this. One thing that helps though, is that when you are screwing it back together, hold plug part and screw body onto it to minimize twisting of the wires. Thanks again.
that video was super helpful. thanks for it. i was embarrassed by changing my headphones because of the jack problem and now i m gonna restore all my headphones. thanks mister🙏
Hi! Thank you so much for this perfectly informative video. I realize you made it a long time ago and Radio shack no longer has this item. Might you know where else it could be found? I'm looking for the one with the screws. Thanks so much
it worked!!! It really worked! Thanks so much. You save my kids because I swore I was not buying another pair headphones after the 3rd pair this summer!!!
Video very helpful. 12-2016 I just fixed my Altec headset. This model just had the 3 wires, Cooper, red and Green and no insulation to speak of around them. I bought a 1/8 gold plug at radio shack for about $5. (you have 30 days to return if needed- in case you can't fix it) UPC 040293100933 - Gold plated mini stereo phone plug 1/8 inch. After cutting the wire, I followed video on the order of what to add to the cord and then screwed the 3 wires down per the video. Tested and worked, then sealed it up. GREAT job and thanks for the help
Thank you for this video. The hardest part was finding a Radio Shack that hadn't closed down!! My headphones only had the copper wire on one side, which was a little confusing but actually a bit easier!
super bro i have seen so many videos regarding this how to fix broken earphones but i cant understand they are just doing but not explaining and not showing close up how we can do exactly but you in this video both did perfectly now im doing easily thanks bro keep it up doing all your videos like this
ok the part is called a 4 poll connector/jack and they are around the same price but i never found one you can connect without soder, never looked, you can still hook up the sound with this one
Thank you!! I didn't even think of solderless connections and it worked great! Tried the solder method a couple of times and it's wayyyyyyyy more complicated.
do all headphones/earphones have same coloured wiring in it??...im scared with my senheiser headphones as if i cut them off found out the colours are different .
Do some more googling for sennheiser. In my foldable set, I had this wire combination. Just soldered and fixed these following this wire layout: www.man42.net/blog/2013/10/sennheiser-px-200-ii-wires/
My dog just chewed up my Beats and I nearly had a heart attack but managed not to jump off my roof and calmed down, Rationalized and looked up how to fix broken wires. This video Helped me Repair them and all is forgiven, thanks to you I didnt throw him in my fireplace
Just wasted an hour of my life finding out the hard way that for my situation: -the red wire was the ground(to connect to the screw furthest from the jack) -the blue wire was the left ear (to connect to the screw closest to the jack) -& the green wire was the right ear (to connect to the middle screw) So again, left ear is short screw, right ear is the adjacent middle length screw, & the ground is the longest lowest screw furthest from the jack & positioned between the parallel left & right screws. note: I rely on my tried & true pc's realtek stereo test to get this right(using my wireless headphones plugged in & placed on my head like it was just before the problem occurred & I always wear my headphones on the proper ear). Also Ive re-used this product for years now. Keep in mind the colors were weird for me because I bought a cheap headphone cable from overseas so if you find something similar, here's your tip. For most my typical headphones, I do it using the method in the video exactly as he explained but this one was odd. edit: I just wasted another hour figuring out something was still wrong....its normally alot simpler when the wires are like the one in the video opposed to what I have. I tried every combination & Ive recut & cleaned & done it again & again but something is always off in the stereo. Its like one ear is stereo & the other ear is always mono or partially stereo. i fuckin hate this shit lol.
Christopher Kelly they do but you have to buy them from a 3rd party.....i'm going to try it probaby. www.amazon.com/Radioshack-Mini-Mono-Phone-Plug/dp/B007Z7TWZK/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1439949902&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=RADIOSHACK+1%2F8%22+MINI+STEREO+PHONE+PLUG+Model+%23%3A+274-869+%7C+Catalog+%23%3A+2740869
very clear video, and excellent close up photography. I live in NZ, so I'll have to look for a similar plug here in an electronics store or buy on-line.
Thanks man.....good info , previous to watching this video I was trowing the damaged buds away , but no more , thanks again for your time on this subject

TechNerd01 Your username is misleading. I do a lot of electrical work I'm going to assume audio is the same in the sense that green is a ground wire. meaning it would be tied in with the copper.
Eli Hopf yes. I watched the entire video in hopes he didn't really just burn/oxidize his ground and didn't flux or remove that junk... If this were a solder job he would have realized his mistake.
just wanted to thank you. It worked for me the problem i had was one earbud didnt work so i just cut the jack from a cassette to mp3 player and wired it to my headphones works like a charm and for free.
Rich. Tried your procedure got it right after 3-tries. Important step was burning the enamel off the wires but after identifying wire colors. I picked up the connectors from Radio Shack but they are going out of business. Have two more headsets to do so I thank you. RDDWIRE
Thanks Rich, been wondering about this for years, bought so many headphones for my kids, now I know how to fix them, too late for them but can fix mine.
THANKS FAM :D Hey guys, just in case you DONT have a radioshack near you (lol) or you have a spare AUX cord laying around and that's more convenient, you can do this same thing by just cutting both heads and connecting the wires, and then solder/electrical tape them back together. I just did it that way and it worked great.
Like your video. But I believe you got ahead of yourself. The housing should be place over the wires right after you cut off the 3.5MM male stereo plug-in, in my honest opinion. The use a piece of tape, to hold it in place, attach the cord going back to your headphones. Please keep making video. You have the talent. And you voice comes thru load and clear. My suggestion is only a tip.
Thanks so much for the instructions, dude. I have these great Sony headphones that have shorted out. So now I'll go in search of the gold replacement plug. Cheers! Jim in MT
Thank you so much. I have a set of Logitech Speakers with that green 3.5mm plug...And it unfortunately somehow got bent :( So I have to replace it. Doesn't work and bypassing adds a buzzing.... So I really want to try this! thanks again. Yay for easy assembly, sturdy and no soldering!!
thank you for the video, such an easy fix with minimal material, although your other video with the soldering gun is very affective also. Quick fix, minimal material, minimal time, minimal $$, doesn't get any better.
Great video. I was going to throw out my old headphones because the plug broke. I tried splicing in a plug from another old set of headphones but it didn't work and I made a mess because I tried to strip the coloured "enamel" off, not knowing what it was tbh I didn't know I should burn it. I will definitely be keeping my headphones and will try again to repair them. Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion! I think I annotated the video so people would know it. It's frustrating when you think you are done, but have to start all over:/
Thanx for the vid ,will try, looks painless and is easier than soldering and another plus, if they should break again just RE-DO until I have no more cord left...LOL Thanx again.

TechNerd01 Your username is misleading. I do a lot of electrical work I'm going to assume audio is the same in the sense that green is a ground wire. meaning it would be tied in with the copper.
The thing is in my country green is NOT ground... There's no green colorcode. Instead there is yellow for ground.
If green goes to the tip, then it is likely left audio.

Thx Man, you saved me $200!
Cory Morgenstein did you get the plug in the video? If so, where did you get it and did it come with screws
thank you for the video, such an easy fix with minimal material, although your other video with the soldering gun is very affective also. Quick fix, minimal material, minimal time, minimal $$, doesn't get any better.
This video was great. Very instructive and i never got lost. Thank you so much for saving my headphones
Thank you so much! Fixed my earbuds effortlessly!
Thanks.
i'm gonna try this out. thanks for this clear video. you're very smart.
Well done video. Can’t wait to fix my headphones.
Rich thanks for the video. It may be easier to put on the cap and insulation prior to stripping and prepping the wire ends.
Can you buy the four housing adapter? For a microphone/ non solder type? Great video I'm glad that to know that I don't have to solder
thank you for sharing the useful tutorial Rich...
