3d Printer 101: How to Clean Your Resin Prints
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Resin 3d printing has a bad reputation of being messy and stinky. It certainly doesn't have to be messy. I will show you how I manage my print clean ups and work flow with my resin 3d printer. I've done a lot of 3d printing with my resin machine over the past few years and I've figured our a pretty good system that will be easy for you to implement in your work space. It's time to banish the mess and to clean your resin 3d prints.

relax on the camera pan it doesn't need to always be moving
ive never gotten sea sick from a yt vid before lmao
Dynamic zoom
God im sea sick
Lol, very direct and not rude.
The constant zoom and pan is making me super nauseous.
I'll add a Dramamine required disclaimer! 🤣
@@9142PropsandArmory Haha sorry Didn't mean to be a jerk. The content is great, especially since I JUST got a resin DL-002R today. I have to get some of those containers you have.
My first print is 2 hours away from finishing
Nah, I gotcha. Just having fun! Sometimes you try something in editing to make footage a little more interesting and you go crazy with it! Good luck with your new resin machine!
"nitrile gloves are not expensive" this didn't age well XD hope the prices come down soon.
True story!
Yes please, would love to know how you built your enclosure. I built one but it does not seem to be working as effectively as I thought it would.
All right Kevin, I'll put you in camp show me more. Love having mine. It moves enough air that I pop the door open while I'm airbrushing and it vents overspray out of the shop.
@@9142PropsandArmory Sounds good, I paint with my airbrush right next to where mine is setup to so something that would vent alclad more than what I have now would be an added bonus...;)
Alclad has a lovely smell, doesn't it?
@@9142PropsandArmory LOL, one to remember that I wish I could forget for sure! Now if it was not so damned good!
I would also like to see this
"IPA is inexpensive" ... fast forward to Covid-19 when IPA is £15 for 1L
I just started 3d printing and thought this was the standard price. Well I can't wait till the price drops again x)
@@SpaceWolf1996 Try Methylated Spirit :) works just as well and much cheaper and easier to get hold of!
@@nathanwebster5705 Yep or Denatured Alcohol. Can get it at Home Depot by the gallon.
Fake propaganda to cull the race as history repeats itself you mean
How often do you replace the alcohol from your cleaning station? Can I reuse it or is it a one-wash and toss sort of deal? Thank you!
no reply to this obvious question please?
In the time I've had it? Twice so far. You can use the alcohol for a long time. Sorry to have missed your question
@@9142PropsandArmory many thanks
@@Peteskis Once your IPA cleaning solution gets too saturated with resin, put it aside for a week or more. The resin residue will sink to the bottom and you can filter it. You can also put the IPA container to cure in the sun/ or in your UV curing station and then filter the cured (and now solid) resin particles.
@@the_arcanum Many thanks, Very helpful
Haha you're like the 3d printer Randy Blythe of L.O.G spitting image lol
WHAT THE HELL I'm currently wearing a NASA shirt and trying to clean my BABY YODA RESIN PRINT HAHAHA
That's perfect!!
OH! Isopropyl Alcohol... for a second i thought you where washing it in beer...
Well, they always say to only cook with wine you'll drink! Maybe I just took that a little too literally. Ha ha
I actually couldnt watch. The constant camera movement was making me sick.
How did you build cabinet? I need to do same thing and vent into basement window.
I'm with you, looking for the case build.
So if I only have 99℅ ipa for my second half wash what should be my ipa to water ratio
Not sure I understand the question entirely, could you please clarify? The water to IPA ratio part has me scratching my head a bit.
Where do you dispose of the waste? Nobody talks about that in all the videos I have seen.
The sink of course...duh (Insert triggered leftists, "rreeeeee" here)
Cure the unused resin and toss it
That definitely works!
I think I'm going with an ultrasonic cleaner filled with a surfactant such as Mean Green. It's less expensive than IPA, It's not a volatile organic solvent so there are fewer health risks from breathing fumes, and plastic containers with a gallon of flammable isopropyl alcohol mounted to your wall is a serious fire hazard.
I'll put a powerful submersible pump in a rinse tank with demonized (distilled) water agitating the parts, with a 30W IR curing lamp in the lid so I rinse and cure at the same time. Maybe use an Arduino and solid state relays to rinse first, then water cure the parts with IR after they're fully rinsed.
Wow you're a huge nerd! Could you make a write up??
This video has more camera movement than an anime monologue. Still great info
You have quite a way with talking without telling us anything at all
Ha ha, maybe I'll have this comment inscribed on my tombstone.
Thank you, that was so helpful. Do you then need to cure it in UV? I've never printed and my resin is in the mail. Already freaking out ahaha
Watching pre apocalypse videos just to see what prices used to be like..
i bought just before the apocalypse
Isn't IPA flammable? How do you address that in your workshop? -thanks for the video, just started printing myself.
What do I do with a curing chamber? Since I bought one because someone told me I needed one
What do you do with the water or IPA when you wanna change it?
Video would be better minus the music. Music just interferes with your commentary and makes it difficult to listen to.
How often do you change out your alcohal?
Cracking video bro but i wont lie the camera pans made me feel like i had vertigo XD
Yeah, tried a little hard to make up for footage that wasn't shot well. Agreed for sure.
Ipa is now the rich mans resin wash now days 🤣🤣
do you have something that stirs the IPA or something on the first wash container? I was wondering because you are the first I've seen on yt that seems to just dip the print. does it make a difference when we use something to stir the IPA vs leaving it in a stagnant IPA? Im just making sure I'm aware of the work around of resin print before buying. TIA
Agitation helps speed things up a bit, but the alcohol is essentially thinning it to the point that it's removed from the print if your part just sits there.
what do you do with the dirty IPA? How do you dispose of it?
Dirty (saturated) ipa can be filtered out many times. What I filter out I leave in a container outside, any remaining ipa evaporates and the resin left behind cures in the sun. When that's done, I toss the cured resin solids. IPA can be brought in for disposal. Call your local municipality, they often have chemical drop off days or can direct you who to take it to for proper disposal.
Do you re-use the IPA in your cleaning vats and if so, how many times/for how long?
I do after letting the particulates in it cure under uv, filter them out and reuse. There's no real number of times or amount of time. Really once the ipa no longer smells like alcohol, it's time for it to be disposed of.
other then the weird zooms and pans this was an amazing video thank you so much
Yeah, video was poorly framed and I let the editing software go a little crazy since the shots were poor.
hi, just bought a elegoo saturn and didnt installd it because i have no chamber build yet. Can you show me how you did your printer chamber housing? Dont wanna have the resin smell in my house too! :)
Is giving the resin piece 2 washes required? Or can you potentially get away with using the 91% ISA for 10 mins
The two washes isn't a necessity. Some do it to get the bulk of the uncured resin off first in a smaller container and then onto their final wash. It does help conserve your washing agent a bit. I used to do that a lot more before I had a dedicated wash station.
@@9142PropsandArmory thank you!!
Great Video...
Thank you!
I get you think the higher prices for cleaners are crazy, which 400 for a cleaner is, but spending 1 or 2 hundred on a machine for people in industry doing R&D, training others how to use the machines with the most ease of use, and sometimes how much your time is worth to you.. that's where the value in the nicer cleaners come in, you end up saving more. but obviously this video is geared toward beginners.
Doesn't any one worry about how to clean teh damn printer? (Build plate, vat etc.??) How do you get the resin off these things safely? Enough with the how to post process the actual prints. We get it.
You use the same cleaning agent for these things that you do to clean your prints. I use IPA or denatured alcohol.
Hi John, this is a life saver of a video, to a simple question - Brilliant, and subscribed!
Can we use 70% alcohol to clean plant based eco friendly resins?
can this be used on standard PLA prints?
great video
Thank you!
Can you use 70% IPA
You can, it doesn't clean as quick as the higher concentrations will. But it will do in a pinch for sure.
You don't cure your resin prints?
I typically do with most of them. Some do not require additional cure time.
You assume everyone knows what IPA is when you're showing this. I read the comments but it would have been nice to know since you are teaching.
What's IPA?
Isopropyl alcohol. Which is impossible to find in stores right now due to the apocalypse. You're more likely to find denatured alcohol at your local construction/home improvement store, near the paints and stains.
@@Grizzydan thanks, I'm from Brazil so I'll have top look around here...
Yep, I'm using denatured as well now. Works great, but more aggressive than IPA.
@@9142PropsandArmory Yeah, it has other chemicals in it from the distilling process like methyl ethyl something. Idk if any of you have watched any of those moonshine shows. It's funny how well they show how to make shine. Anyway, the "heads" aka the first percentage of distilation that comes off the cook is full of really nasty stuff. That is what will make you blind if you drink it, and why you can't trust shine from just anyone.
Denatured alcohol will ahve that stuff in it, Just don't let it get on your skin, wear gloves, but you have to do that anyway with the resin, so it's all pretty bad. ISO is going to be distilled multiple times. Either way they are also mixed with wood alcohol and who knows what else to make you really sick if you try drinking it. Otherwise it's pretty similar to everclear or vodka--only the stuff you buy at the liquor store is diluted. Not many brands are licensed to distribute anything over 50% for drinking.
But more aggressive is good right? You don't have to spend as much time in the dip tank.
Not to mention ISO is $30/liter or $70/gallon, and I just picked up almost a gallon of DNA for $16.

Thanks for contributing...though maybe next time something more relevant to the content would be great.
Actual discussion of how to clean parts starts at about 4:20. Dam thats annoying.
All credibility was lost when I saw the Rey sticker...
Well, when you have young children and they wish to share with you and help decorate, you happily allow it.
