- An animated explanation to “Why did this happen?” When you move up to larger resin 3d prints, you also start seeing failures. There’s no blanket answer for all print failures. But in this video I explore a few reasons why resin 3d prints sometimes fail. And hopefully show you how you can get better results.
This video includes over 10 minutes of animated segments and those took forever to finish.
Hope you enjoy it!

A well-done presentation.Probably one of the most professional videos I've seen from the 3D printing community.
Thanks!
Really good video
Just found this channel and I totally agree. Not a this is best now watch my adverts.. This maybe best and here is why I think that... Far better. And with the BUT!! It may not work for everything. Well done Nerdtronic. Subscribing now.. And hoping you have older videos to interest me, if not look forward to more.
No kidding, he really knows what he's doing and how to explain it
@@helderlimaletsgo thanks
Are you kidding me, 5k subscription on THIS quality of a video? You my sir deserve more! I just ordered Elego Mars and I am thankful for your useful content
Wow, thanks! I hope it grows too :)

My problem is this: I have adhesion in my supports because I pause my prints to check the progress. When the plate raises up, the supports are stuck to the bed but my model is stuck to the fep. I don't know what's up. I haven't had a successful print yet. Everything in my print profiles are lined up accurately. I'm using the Elegoo Mars Pro. I only had my printer 5 days and I only printed four items. ALL FOUR ITEMS WERE STUCK TO THE FEP. What is wrong? My resin is new just like my printer. Everything is stuck to the vat and I'm losing patience. Please help!
@@yurushii My suggestion to you is to not pause your print. Let it run till completion at least once and see if it succeeds. Pausing it unnecessarily is always a bad idea
As a SLA noob, this video is amazingly helpful. As a motion animator myself, I know the time it takes to make even simple animations like that. Well done, like and subscribed!
Ha - you know. It does take time. But when I think "Oh I need a graphic here" I can't not do it. I have to jump into after effects and whip up something.
In all the videos I have seen for the past 2 years, I don't think anyone has explained printing and how supports work with such simple and easy to understand graphics. Bravo sir!
From now on I'm just going to load your video instead of fumbling thru an explanation with non 3D printing people
Man, the animation and content are amazing! thank you
Thanks for this. I have a ton of experience with FDM and this was exactly the high density informative content that I was looking for, focused on the differences and what's happening behind the scenes of a failure. Now I'm off to print some more!
You're welcome. Glad it helped.
Bit of necrobumping but same here. 2 years into FDM printing but totally noob with SLA. This video helped a lot to understand SLA more.
This content is gold. There are hundreds of how-to videos that are worthless unlike this one because you’re TEACHING based on error and problems, not the other way around where people just blindly follow "the correct" way without ever fully understanding why they are doing what they’re doing. Thanks a lot.
Thanks!
Essentially what everyone else has said - clear and with great animations that really illustrate your points. Feel slightly more prepared to print now.
Wow thanks! Good luck!
I've been printing with FDM for some time now so I'm very familiar with supports and overhangs. However, having just bought my first SLA printer my first prints were less than stellar. Whilst it's obvious the print orientation is reversed, I hadn't quite wrapped my head around proper support placement and print orientation (I guess FDM muscle memory just didn't want to let go). Thank you for explaining very clearly what my brain should have been telling me but didn't. This has helped me massively and you have gained a sub. This video should be a must watch for anybody new to SLA printing. Once again a massive thank you for providing that much needed light bulb moment.
wow thanks
Been Printing on 5 different FDM printers for the past 5 Years and just picked up a Peopoly Phenom L and a Phrozen Sonic Mini and had/have absolutely no idea how to support or orientate Models for Resin Printing, Major Hats off to this Video as it has been the best i have seen by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cool thanks.
This video could be used to teach students in a classroom. Thanks for the information. I'm just about to start my resin journey and this video helps out a lot. thank you!
Underrated channel! Thanks for a great explanation on resin prints.
Epic animations, especially explaining the flex and snap of the FEP! Just got my Saturn and this helped me understand what's going on beneath the goo! :)
Awesome thanks!
One day over 2 years old and this video just taught me more than the last 5 videos combined. Now I gotta watch your whole channel. THANK YOU!
I'm shocked that you don't have more subscribers. This was one of the best videos I've ever seen on this topic. Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks - they'll come. The channel is growing. Just takes time.
(like most folks getting into this) I have watched many, many videos covering these topics.
This Video is hands down Top Grade Info.
Way to Go. Thanks for the help.
Glad it was helpful!
This channel is criminally undersubscribed for the level of quality that is found in these videos!
Thanks. Subs take time. And I have the stupid "you already have an adsense account" error that is preventing me from monetizing - which is necessary to grow the channel as YT likes to promote videos they get paid on.
I want to get into resin printing. This is the first most concise video I came across after a full night of searching. Incredible explanation lesson in gravity and even better animation! Bonus point for Jurassic Park reference
My son liked it (the Jurassic Park reference).
"like the dinos" You don`t want to release them the wrong way ! LMAO
If I would have watched this first, I probably wouldn’t have bought my resin printer.
hi mark , to get a resin printer as well ?
After a dozen or so print fails I’m happy a friend showed me this video, I got a much better understanding of how I was messing up now thank you.
Glad it helped!
Fantastic! The animation totally makes a difference in understanding how the printer works and finally it all clicked in...THANK YOU!
Glad it helped!
New to printing and loving learning from my mistakes, I know how some of my prints have been failing but this helped me see why. Thanks man.
This is by far the best explanation about resin printing and understanding the process when it comes to trying to assure a successful print! Thanks for helping illustrate the issues involved and helping to avoid failed prints. I just began resin printing with my ANYCUBIC Photon D2 and have had to work through some of these problems already and this video really helped me understand my print issues a lot better! SUBSCRIBED!
Wow, thank you!
This video should be presented everywhere for beginner printers in SLA! Very well presented
Thanks!
Honestly, this might be one of the best videos i've ever seen on youtube.
Sure, it's not flashy and the topic is niche, but goddamn this video delivers EXACTLY what it promises and nothing less and that is rare these days. Fantastic animations that are advanced enough to be pleasing to the eye but still simple enough to be able to easily follow the theory behind it, without being distracted by clutter etc.
Well researched, well delivered information that leaves me perfectly armed with all the knowledge i need to adjust the things myself instead of blindly following instructions of some youtube tutorial without understanding why.
I know it might seem odd to be so overly excited by a video like this, but this is the content that is making youtube such a valuable place rather than all the flashy/clickbait-y stuff on the front page. Take my like, take my upvote, even though you deserve more for your efforts than that.
Watch your mouth son.
One of the best graphical descriptions of 3d printing I’ve seen, awesome job
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to create this. As a noob who only ordered his printer today, this addressed basically all of the questions I had. Incredibly clear and useful examples too. Amazing job!
Many thanks - that's the best explanation I've seen so far. As a long-time FDM printer geek - it's taking some mental adjustment - and this definitely helped. What isn't mentally obvious is that unlike an FDM print - where the plastic is pretty stiff within seconds of being laid down - that isn't the case with resin unless you keep the light turned on for longer. What's most infuriating - is that with FDM, you can see that something's going wrong immediately - but until your resin print is more than an inch or two tall, you have no idea.
Great video for beginners, and I am one of them but, have to say, I've understood problems with my prints and came up to similar conclusions. Having accurate small cnc machine found out that resin printing is not so great for 3d models that have complex flat geometrical shapes. You either have to add lots of supports, make model with smart integral supports (as cube model), or break the model into smaller pieces and maybe design with few artificial flat layers that you later remove by sanding. Very hard to get a perfect model with resin. Printing minis and toys may not be as bad as we don’t see much of flat surfaces that usually don’t print well.
I have a project (that will eventually be another video) where I made a self supporting structure - basically like a lego tree. Those pieces snap off and are pretty clean. Flat surfaces on the sides etc. No overhang problems. I'll try to get that video out within a few months.
This was a fantastically produced video. This quality of presentation is rare on channel with 50 times the subscribers. As someone getting started in resin printing this is hugely helpful.
Wow, thank you! Hopefully sub and view count will catch up this year
Thats the best video ever for who is starting at 3d resin printing! Thanks a lot man!
Understatement of the year! I highly agree. Thank you for posting the video.
Best “how to start with SLA printing” yet.
This is the most important video, For someone that just got a resin 3d printer, I would recommend you to create a video with the tile, how does a 3d printer upside down works or how does the resin 3d printer works upside down, there is none out there explaining and your graphics explained very well, once again, great job and thank you.
This is the best ELI5 video to show family when they want to learn printing. Thank you for this video. 3 years later and it’s still very relevant.
Really helpful! Thank you so much! Going from FDM to SLA is such a learning curve because you need to change your vision of how a part prints
Thanks
Forget about the problem-solving, (which is fantastic); the first part of the vid is the clearest and most succinct explanation of how 3D printing works that I have seen so far, and has at last given me a clear understanding in my head of how it works. Thank you very much.
Gotta be one of the best 3d printing videos I've come across. You have a great knack for teaching. Keep up the great work! Thank you
Really expanding my knowledge on fluid dynamics for resin printing thanks you!!
Best visulisation I've seen on 3D printing processes, very well done!
Your vid is still helping people years later! I'm brand new to printing in general and this is an amazing explanation. Thank you!
Dude! If you are not a teacher, it is a career that you can easily handle! Outstanding video! Subscribe is a no brained. Looking forward for more exciting material like that! Best
As a newb....this shed so much light on the 'process' and has given me a better understanding about the hobby! Thank you so much sir!!
Finally .. I was wondering why everyone keeps saying angle your prints ... Thank you
The depth of information and the visualizations are amazing, good job
Great video!!!! The animations were enlightening. I thought I knew what was happening to my prints but now I know what I kept having the same failures
Glad it was helpful! Good Luck!
Excellent video! I don't even have a 3D printer yet, I know almost nothing, and this video was to the point and easy to understand. Thanks!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it! I plan to do a video for beginners soon as well.
Wow. You put a lot of effort into this! I love how clear the visuals are!!
Thank you so much!
Just got my first resin printer and I came across your video when trying to find out why things always seemed to be printed at an angle, I now totally understand what happening thanks to your very professional, clear and concise presentation, keep up the good work 🙂
hi pwfk, my china factory design, produce and sell 3d resin printer, if u or yr friend want to buy it again, pls let me know with thx .
Thank you very much. This was by far the best description I have found on supports in resin 3d printing
I can't recall the last time I have watched a video tutorial/explanation that was so brilliantly visualized. Thanks for all the work.
Great job on the animated visualisations, they really help and look great!
Gee thanks
This is still one of the best videos out there for beginners trying to wrap their heads around resin printing. I watched this a long while ago before I even had a printer and it gave me a huge boost in understanding right out of the gate. Thank you thank you thank you
Really appreciate all the effort you put into your videos, I’m new to 3D printing and resources like this help on the learning curve (concise, to the point and all quality 👏) thank you 🙂
I have been on youtube for ten plus years now and never made one comment on any video. You, sir, get my first comment ever for such a great, well presented video that is clear, concise, and straight to the point. And gives excellent tips. Please make videos on All the things!
Well done
Thanks for taking the time to make this video really well. One of the mist thorough 3D print videos I've seen. How about doing one on exposure and washing ?

Video is amazing and really helps for beginners! However I would love some more in depth ones. I can’t find any website or link that’ll fix my issue :(
This is a brilliant rendition and a brilliant visual for n00bs and for people like me who’ve been printing for ages, but suddenly have unexplained issues with personal files! Thank you! Sharing this!
Fantastic, educational, well-presented, easy to follow content. Subbed and thank you!
Excellent video and instruction. I'm now at 2 days owning a resin printer and your video is a good guide. Thanks.
hi Gartholameau Darion-Saphino, do u hv any plan to buy more one 3d resin printer pls ? my china factory design , produce and sell/export sla 3d resin printer
If I had found this video 2 years ago, I would have had a MUCH easier time learning this stuff. It's so well made!
Especially the FEP snap lol. I remember hearing it and being so scared my prints were about to fall off and fail, haha
the animations were amazing, i went into this video knowing nothing about resin print supports and now i know everything i need to make successful resin prints
Thanks, Michael! I feel like I should have had to pay for this.
I thought I'd learn nothing from this basic video but it was the most informative and insightful yet. Your work is fantastic thank you very much!!
Great! Thanks.
That was really good cheers. Coming from FDM it's hard to break habits!
I had a friend gift me with this Mars 2 Pro, and I'm a total noob in the world of 3d printing. Thank you for your well made videos for helping me get into this wonderful hobby.
Wow, this is an excellent video. Great production value and great illustrations. Thanks!
Sooooo even though I knew a lot of what you were talking about the way you explain them made a lot more click in my brain. Literally had me go from trying to look why my prints were failing to looking at it and the way you described upside down and how far away it is from the build plate and center. Lot less failures now!
Another great video. Thx
My honest opinion, is you are a master and your well-presented information were really useful tips. You are great in explaining concepts. Best 3D printing video I've ever seen. You deserve appreciation of 3D printing community. 😁👍
Awesome explanation! keep it up, please!
As a new person to this side of my hobby, I have to say that this has been most helpful and the best video I've seen on the subject
Is this Red Letter Media's version of Rich?
This is THE VERY BEST explanation and illustration on this subject that have ever seen. Thank you very much!!
Wow, thank you!
When he said "A large free roam Dingleberry." I felt that.
I'm an electrical engineer who likes to restore vintage electronic equipment (e.g. replace missing/damaged knobs, etc.). I've never worked with *any* 3D printing technology at all before. I just purchased an Elegoo Mars 3 Pro. This is all going to be an "interesting" (likely frustrating) learning curve, but I think the results will be well worth it. Your video has primed me with some great food for thought! Thank you!
I know someone has already asked us somewhere, but why don’t you just turn the T upside down. Then you don’t need supports at all.
The T was just an easy to understand example of a clear overhang instead of using more complex models that might be confusing or harder to explain with.
I design my parts for 3D printing.
And the c on its side or lay them down 😂
I got a SLA printer a few days ago. I made a few good prints and a few bad prints. I couldn't understand why some prints went wrong. This video perfectly explained my mistakes. Many thanks for posting it!
Glad it helped.
You explained everything so simply, and your animations illustrate your points so well. As an educator, I gave you an A+
I'll take it. Thanks.
This channel is required viewing for SLA beginners. Excellent content, well presented. Keep up the great work Mike!
Wow nice words. Thanks.
As many have said. This man deserves more likes and subscribes. His presentation is stellar and the visuals are perfect for showcasing not only WHAT goes wrong but HOW and WHY. Most people would probably just settle for still images of failed prints and explain over them.
thanks. I'll get there. It takes a while to get traction.
Excellent tutorial. Have had a printer for 2 days. Hope to be printing with it next weekend. So many tutorials to watch before that happens. This one is a saver.
Extremely helpful. I am primarily printing large vases on Saturn and experimenting with support strategies. This gets me further on down that road. Cheers.
I've always wondered why I get random holes in some of my prints, thanks for taking the time to make this video. Really useful!
You sir, are now my chief 3D printing information source. Bravo
Just bought a Mars Elegoo.
Watching a bunch of resin print videos.
Your presentation is the best I've seen to demonstrate failure points.
Thanks.
Good cartooning as well!
And I subscribed...
Wow, thank you!
Hands down the best explanation video on a 3D printing process that I have ever seen. !
One of the best tutorials I have seen so far...
One of the clearest and well explained channels about resin prints. Keep it up! Already a fan!
I wonder if you have plans on how to solve low temp issues (if you have them where you live)
Yeah. My printer is in my garage and I live in the desert. However I did put in a wall in there to make a little printer room. That keeps UV light out, even if the garage door is open, and it allows me to temp control that room a little. I have a seed heater in the Transform. It fits in behind the Z axis mechanism. I also have a portable AC in there for summer time (it can get like 115 here). And I have a floor heater in the room also.
Hello first of all thanks for this amazing content. I am not sure that can you reply this comment but I have a problem. You explained the FEP snap but every cycle on my prints I hear that voice and I can see the wave after print separate from the FEP if the print have large area. I cant solve the problem with exposure time and Z calibration. Is this a problem that can tear the FEP? Thanks in advance.
This is the best SLA tutorial. Saved me weeks of trouble for a beginner.
This is the most professional channel on 3D printing on RUclips.
Thats very kind.. thank you.
Just got an Anycubic Mono X and this video probably saved me more heartache than any other video I've watched.
Wow thanks. Glad it helped.
Wow this video is absolutely awesome. Coming from FDM printing, I just bought my first resin printer and was trying to figure out why I was getting warping on the bottom of my standard test print. This video explains everything perfectly, the curvature on the bottom of my print looks exactly like the T that's getting pulled without proper supports.
Thanks! Glad it helped
Holy cow - I learned and understood more from this video than 30 other videos - put together! Top pro quality!
I know I'm late to the show, but I just decided to get into resin rather than FDM. While I was 100% aware of how both of these methods worked, you definitely had me rethinking everything I thought I knew about resin printing. Your animations were phenomenal and did a splendid job at making your points. Hands down one of the most informative videos on 3D printing I've watched on RUclips. Thank you.
Glad I could help!
@Nerdtronic While I'm thinking about it, I've been attempting to print table-top dice for DnD and I'm suffering with the clarity of my numbers. It seems like resin is curing in the number pockets, but only on the support side. Over curing problem? I'm down to 6 seconds per layer.
Wow. This is a fantastic video. You do a great job of taking important concepts and presenting them in such as way that when a person leaves, they feel like common sense. Great job!
Wow thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@Nerdtronic If you're looking for an idea for future videos, I'd love to hear your perspective on supports. Either way, liked and subscribed.
Those were some superb animations! This is a truly excellent video for explaining the necessity of supports and providing information about where to place them.
2 year's old video, but still super helpful. The time and effort to make this presentation.. well done, well done. Thank you!
This is the best explaining about not jumping the gun and RTFM.
That is some REALY nice presentation we have here, I have a FDM printer but stick around to watch this just because it is so well done
As a "seasoned" resin printer user I am sad that I just stumbled onto this video. The excellent presentation and explanation to go with it helped me really visualize the process and even learned something new. Easy like and subscribe.
Thank you very much!
