How to Clean | Recycle | Reuse IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) for 3D printing by VOGMAN

  • I do a lot of 3D resin printing and get through plenty of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) when cleaning prints. To reduce expense, I clean, recycle and reuse my IPA extending its working life and saving money. It's easy to do and works very well.
For a while I've been thinking about cleaning IPA through distillation, but it's a very dangerous experiment which I discuss here. Remember, with everything done, my recommendation for distillation was clear - don't do it. Even though we're refining an existing, non-consumable alcohol here, the distilling of alcohol is often a legal grey area and that's for a good reason... it's a very dangerous process. Ignore silly claims like 'the government only wants its tax,' boiling alcohols are highly reactive and very flammable. Recycle by filtering, yes, but leave distillation to the professionals. Your health and wellbeing are worth far more than the price of a bottle of IPA, so don't take the risk.

    ** SAFETY **
Don't place your IPA in direct sunlight. There's plenty of UV even in shaded areas. IPA boils at a surprisingly low temperature so avoid heat sources. Ensure containers are well marked 'do not drink' and store away from innocent hands. As for distillation, this is best left to experienced professionals as should be avoided by well meaning amateurs.
    ** DISCLAIMER **
This video is for and educational and entertainment purposes. The distillation experiment here involved refining existing Isopropyl Alcohol which is NOT for human consumption. Don't take risks with your health! It is a VERY dangerous. Do not try and replicate what you see here without proper equipment, safety gear and a thorough understanding of the legalities and processes involved.

For general safety - you need cooling on the exit tube to minimize the vapor from the IPA, and as a general tip, the reviving flask can be primed with pure IPA and hose kept down submerged so the vapors have to go trough the liquid. Also, maybe a ice bath for the receiving flask.

Your funnel was the first non-test model I printed on my new FDM printer!
I wanted to add here for others considering it, it ALSO doubles as a fantastic funnel to hold your paint filters when you put your resin back in the bottle. I was having trouble with funnels clogging before and spilling resin, this one is perfect and it is FAST because it allows more of the filters surface area to be effective.
I printed mine at 150% and that seems to be the perfect size to accommodate paint and coffee filters.

Usually after every cleaning I put the bucket inside the curing station and let it cure for half an hour so that way it cures and settles at the bottom then I use a contraption I made that works alot like a French press to keep it all at the bottom for the next cleaning. Keeps my prints from getting uncured resin on them even when the alcohol is well used and I can clean it way less often

I've actually come to find that while IPA is pretty commonly used, it is really not that great compared to other readily available cleaning supplies out there. I've found that Mr.Clean works way better than IPA, and is considerably cheaper with less odor than IPA. It cleans uncured resin off way better than IPA at a fraction of the cost. So do things like Simple Green and Mean Green cleaners. A simple rince in water or IPA after and you are good to go, but I never actually clean my parts in IPA anymore. Once you see the difference when using something else, you will never go back.

The funnel idea with all those holes was BRILLIANT. Wow, seriosly, I've been filtering things for years with my filters clogingging up constantly and nothing like that has ever ocurred to me. To increase the speed of the distilation you could ad boling chips (small pieces os glass, to act as nucleation points) to the flask where you heat the alcohol. Also consider cooling the hose to maximize the the condensation of the alcohol and limit loses. You could consider investing in a distillation apparatus, but, as you have stated, at the end of the day distilling large quantities of alcohol at home isn't very pracrical and can be very dangerous. Great video as usual.

I have to say. After a lot of failed attempts to recycle IPA (I even tried the aluminum sulfate method shown on another channel and ended up with yellowish IPA which didn’t clean my prints at all).
I decided to give the distillation method a try but I used an electrical water distiller for the job.
It works perfectly, it’s safer than the “glass chemist stuff” and perfectly clean sIPA and it works over and over again. It takes about three hours to distill four liters.
As long as I take all the precautions (doing it in a WELL ventilated area and no sparks or flames of any kind around) it’s wonderful. As my wash and cure machine uses 9 liters , four distillations of the same batch of IPA pays the machine. I only need to add some cooling to the exit hose to make distilling more efficient.
I know IPA is quite cheap but I’d rather use it as much as I can in order to avoid the hassle of properly discarding it.

Theres also your work flow to consider, when the ipa has reached that sticky stage where it no longer cleans all the residue from a fresh print its still suitable for an initial rinse. This both gets more use out of the old stuff AND helps preserve the new stuff since its only effectively removing the slight residue of the initial bath.
For mimimal labor you could have a second wash stayion staged up amd ready to go, or the cheap route is a bucket of old ipa that you swish the print around in before moving on to your typical cleaning rig.
The old ipa can probably be quite nasty before it becomes more trouble than its worth.

Still think the filtering box with two stages of filtering is the best way to go (will tackle that project after my current).

Potential distillation setup improvement. In place of using torch to heat up the water bath, maybe you can try using W1209WK controller (the same as in printer internal heater) with the electric heater. This way you could quite precisely control the temperature over time, compensating even water evaporation to some degree. This should even reduce even a "little bit" a risk of vapor to blow off with not having open fire.

Great video, my IPA is fairly clear but has become sticky like you showed. I think it's because I use a lot of transparent resins so it's doesn't look as cloudy but the undissolved resin is still in there. On another note, distillation ought to be allowed for scientific purposes. I don't think distilling your own vodka is any cheaper than going out and buying it, at least not where I live.

As an organic chemist, the idea of distilling IPA over a flame without a fume hood is pretty scary... I agree that it probably isn't worth doing at home... but if I was going to, I'd use vacuum distillation inside a sealed setup and reduce the temperature down to about 40 C. Three notes of caution here though: Glassware under vacuum can implode if it's flimsy or damaged, be aware that you may ruin an oil type vac pump if it ingests solvent vapour, and if you use a diaphragm pump you need to exhaust it outside and away from sources of ignition.

i had very good results without the distillation part.
I use the anycubic wash and cure too, when the alcohol becomes unusable (it leaves too much residue on the plate when washing), I let it cure a couple of hours in the station (I also do 1 hour of curing when the alcohol is mid life), that alone makes the resin way more gel like and easier to work on, after one day is usually all settled on the bottom and the alcohol on top is already very clear.
I then filter It with a paint filter, and recover all the gel like resin, then i filter it the last time with a paper filter (50 µm).

As the boiling point of ipa is 180F it might be safer to use a sous vide. This gives excellent temp control. I suspect putting the receptacle in an ice bath would probably help as well. That way there are no open flames and you can maintain a closed system.

Thx for a nice video and easy to understand. But NEVER EVER BRING ALCOHOL OR PETROL NEAR AN OPEN FLAME. A teacher in chemistry used some rubbing alcohol, a log stove made it nice and cozy. Turned around to get something. Turned back just in time to see evepored gas ignited. A burning flash dived to the bottle. Details are unclear but the bottle was throwed a through the window (open I suppose, long time ago) and it burst/exploded outside. No big damaged. Lesson learned and brought forward. Take care out there 💚

Id look to filter on a grand scale kind of how you treat wastewater. Try to use a coagulant first and then take this further with drying the IPA/water mix. Using water will dilute your IPA, so Using cassava tapioca pearls, you can dry your IPA after coagulation. You should end up with 100% IPA after that drying. If you have a molecular sieve, you can use that to dry large amounts too. Celite & filter paper will take out trace particulates.

Very good! I would guess that maybe ultra cheap water filters might help as well. Maybe used water pitcher filters? The alcohol should slip through whatever is in there, but at the same time maybe there's alcolhol soluble crap left in a used filter. Who knows. But it might be worth trying since little filters are sometimes cheap and are meant to filter many gallons of water. One might get a lot of use out of one after UV filtering.

@@vogman I would hazard a guess that maybe a Brita filter might survive a number of cycles on diligently maintained alcohol. The sticky substance in yours might be something that would clog it up within a few uses, but it depends on just how nasty the stuff is. They aren't perfectly efficient. But I would imagine that it'll definitely help. There's videos of guys filtering beer and other various things with them and they're left with much paler fluid with only light taste. The only thing that might be more effective and more expensive would be something like a deionization filter. They usually last a long time and produce near distillation quality filtration.

Take an upside down coke bottle, punch a tiny hole in the lid, put something like a cotton bud or some coffee strainer at the bottom so the sand doesnt fall out.
Fill with a few alternating layers of sand and ground up charcoal about 1 inch thick each. Pour ipa into the upside down bottle and let it filter.
It will come out flawlessly and has made two liters of IPA last me 3 weeks of 24/7 printing.
