  • I made this skylight out of this stuff from Home Depot www.homedepot....
    It was very simple and I am very happy with the result. It bought in a ton of extra light and really opens up the space.

    Mega simple. I like it. I just scored a fan-tastic vent cheap, so deleting the other hatch is on my mind now. Maybe I'll follow suit and go skylight!

    Oh for a cheap alternative you can get Velcro strips to add a mesh screen for the inside on that skylight.

    THAT'S what I've been wanting to do to the alumunim roof of my cargo trailer. However there's a slight curve in the roof. Was your roof perfectly flat or was there a slight bend (did you have to bend the .220 plexiglass a little?). I was thinking maybe I could set it up there on top of the roof (maybe with something black underneath it) and the sun could bend it. Or, I could blow hot air from a hair dryer or heat gun on it. Anyway, I really like the "simple" way you did it without having to use a ton of wood like others' I've seen on RUclips. Thx

  • @BEAdventurePartners

    Definitely streamlined compared to the opening box type hatch we installed! QUESTION: Are you putting any sort of clearcoat on them to protect against UV, fogging & scratches?
    Love this style of video!
    - Brian + Erin

    • @BackroadPurpose
      @BackroadPurpose  4 года назад +2

      For sure,. The hatch is cool but not needed for us. and no, we dont plan on it. We haven't had an issue with fog, and I think the plexiglass is UV protected. We might do a 35% tint to help with some heat... or a curtain.

      @@BackroadPurposemy question is similar. Does this allow more heating up of the space via sunny days? How effective is a cover/curtain in managing the heat increases?

  • @johnsweet984

    Looks great and love the simplicity! It looks like you screwed in the glass on at least two edges to the ribs of the bus -- any reason you chose that over screwing into a wood frame on the inside?

  • @eedom69
    @eedom69 Год назад

    Cool. I am thinking of doing something like that for a skylight because it's simple, but I want to make it a double layer with a little air gap for added insulation. Maybe surrounding the edges between layers with butyle tape/kilmat or cork to create a little air gap. But that stuff gets kinda gross when it heats up. Any ideas?

  • @artest7
    @artest7 2 года назад

    Oops! Nevermind. I just counted approx 32 screws. Because my cargo trailer has a slight bend in the roof and I'd have to either bend the plexiglass prior to installing it ( which I don't know if I could do) or drill the screws in and hopefully the slight bend wouldn't eventually pull out the screws. That's why I asked if urs had any bend in it. Thx

  • @artest7
    @artest7 2 года назад

    Was there any curvuture in the roof? In other words, did you have to bend the plexiglass a little and that's why you had to use the screws (how many screws)? Because you stopped the video after the 4th or 5th screw so we weren't able to see how many you added. Thanks!

  • @LastChanceTinyHouse
    @LastChanceTinyHouse 3 года назад +1

    Probly should have gone with 1/4 inch tempered glass, and a raised lip or sides around the window ( a frame). Also, keeping the hatch would have been smarter too, just my opinion. With the frame you would have been able to get a better seal all the way around and if the seal ever did leak, you'd have less chance of the water getting inside. The reason I would 1/4 inch tempered glass is because of hail, rocks, and someone oppsing and falling on it. If your having fun in some remote place and someone were to opps, you'd have a big hole or a crack that you'd have to repair somehow.

    • @BackroadPurpose
      @BackroadPurpose  3 года назад +6

      Good thoughts. However, plexiglass glass is around 6 times stronger than tempered glass. And polycarbonate is 10x stronger. So this is actually the best stuff to use. And as far as using the oem hatch. We didn't like the style/design. Wanted to make the skylight bigger. And also with it being on the top, water will naturally fall off the edge and not get caught in an edge like it would be we had a frame. But even then, we used butyl tape and polyurethane caulk added have had no issue whatsoever. Its been about a year.

    Did you do a water test to make sure it didn’t leak? I love how much light that let in. You may need to put a curtain up because it will get pretty warm inside.

    • @BackroadPurpose
      @BackroadPurpose  4 года назад +3

      We did and no leaks! it's pretty flat with a slight decline so the water just rolls off. and yes! Now that its warm, we will need to get a shade or something because the sun is HOT!

      @@BackroadPurpose The white stuff is buytl tape? 3:31? I am planning on placing the plexiglass on the inside vs the outside like you did mainly for aesthetics and hopefully it won't leak. Looks like a lot of sealants don't stick well to plexiglass but maybe I just need something like a gasket and then add bolts or rivets to keep it tight.

    • @BackroadPurpose
      @BackroadPurpose  Год назад

      @@eedom69 I wouldn't do it on the inside. mine is on the outside. if you do the inside you making way more point for water entry rather than it just rolling off the top. plus if you use plexiglass/acrylic, it has a higher chance of cracking when you drill it. polycarbonate can be screwed through.

    • @eedom69
      @eedom69 Год назад

      @@BackroadPurpose Right I realize that however I wanted a round window on my doors and if i put it on the outside it won't look cool. I'll have to do some tests for water. Cutting circles is also not easy and putting a square piece of plexiglass over the circle would look ugly and cutting a circle in plexiglass is not easy as I tried. I think if the seal is good then no problem. Today I will try drilling some scrap pieces. I'll let you know how it works.

      The alarm are usually attached to the flasher system so maybe try and find the power supply to the bus flashers and disconnect it. The hatch isnt bad. Basically just screwing in a patch. Use butyl tape to seal it.
