The only free lunch is diversity. I hold like 5 or so mutual funds and 1 ETF. On occasion I buy a random stock that looks too beat up. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose and hold it for awhile. Do what you can to save and diversify.

Set up a brokerage account late 2021 and put a big chunk into an S&P 500 index fund...2+ years being down/terrible timing, but I kept buying throughout and am now up a lot with a solid investment basis. You just have to keep a long term mindset and like Rudy says, be aware of the cyclical nature of investing.
Most of it is unrealised gains. Unfortunately most retail investors will get hammered. They are also ignoring the bond market. No goodie locks landing.

1) Trusting a random stranger with literally 0 authority it's just a bad strategy. You're doomed to lose money if you just take advice blindly and don't do your own research.
2) When someone says "be careful", not now, but literally since he started the channel, that's good advice when it comes to finance. Again, however, that takes us to point number one. Do. Your. Goddamn. Research.

Yep, I think anyone who stayed in a CCG longer than 5 years and cares about value has experienced both substantial gains as well as losses, at least on a percentage scale. To me that keeps it interesting.

What’s MetaZoo?
I mean, Meta just popped off 20% today and Walmart had a 10% run. Historically, if you move with the trend (up or down) you do well. Best thing to do is to DCA or pyramid in and have downside hedging or limits/stop losses set.
And options can be very safe. There are ways to play price, volatility and time, both long, short, and sideways. It's all a numbers game and if you do it conservatively, can be very profitable long term. What matters is that you put the effort in to do it properly.
How do you hedge against a Metazoo position that imploded on investors?
How do you hedge on cases of MTG cards that are slowly declining in value each month?
What/how you hedging against this,

I should also point out that by "Meta" I mean the company that owns Facebook, not MetaZoo.
For a business to increase their margins, they have to increase revenue or reduce expenses. For me, I am a single person with no dependents, so it is easier for me to minimize my own expenses and accumulate money that way.
For Magic, I have been playing for many years (since Invasion, on and off for 2-4 years at a time), so I have some cards like original fetchlands, etc (but not in the best condition). Over time, I trade with friends and other players for cards that will hold value better than others (eg, trading $5 standard cards for shocklands or fetchlands, or EDH staples). Eventually, I might sell these on ebay, trade to a store buylist or sell them to people I know; at that point, I'll convert it to a sealed box.
Sealed boxes hold value better than individual cards. As Rudy says, you cannot have a situation where the EV of the cards are worth more than the box itself, otherwise arbitrage exists.
Collectables should be one of the last assets you invest into because they can be non-liquid (but you should have something), as well as potentially being very volatile in price. What matters is the "water level" that Rudy talks about. That is, if ALL assets are going up or down, then it's systemic and it's not like your box is specifically failing.
You should have a mix of new Magic, old Magic, sealed, singles, a little bit of everything. You don't want to be fully concentrated into one thing; likewise, you shouldn't just have Magic, you should have other games that have existed for 5+ years, or take a risk on newer products (FaB, Sorcery, etc). This means having appropriate position sizing, too. If you have $10,000, you should not have $5,000 in Magic. You should have most of that in a broad market ETF and fixed income or precious metals as a baseline. Of that $10,000, maybe $500-800 should be in alternative assets (which depends on the individual).
So yeah, while Metazoo may have crashed by 95%, you would be diversified enough that it would only be an effectively small loss on your net worth. If you buy a little bit of everything, you'll eventually have one or two big gains that account for most of your upside, with many small losses along the way. Look at the 80/20 rule. The same thing applies to trading stocks actively as well.
@@theboringchannel2027 Also, as soon as I saw the news about Metazoo a day later, I emailed my LGS and told them "Hey, you've got a stack of dead product and everyone is going to be liquidating them online. If you're desperate, I'll pay you $0.20 on the dollar for anything you have"
They said they'd keep it in mind, but if absolutely nobody bites, I don't mind taking possession of it at a huge discount. It'll probably become irrelevant, but if it was a scam to begin with, they could very well sell the IP years down the road and double dip on it, causing an uptick in legacy products
Or at the very least, I'll get some cheap stuff to have fun with my friends

With what asset? Another IP cardboard products would not be considered a hedge, as there is no correlation between the two or its pricing, which you see with dollar/gold, etc.
PS> with that 10k account, and $500-800 in alternative assets, that $300 box of metapoo that crashed 90%,
put your alternative asset investment down 35-40% or so as a whole.
Hard to diversify a $500-800 portfolio, when the items cost $200-300 each or more.
