Almost exactly 5 years ago I asked you via mail if my depression and insecurities would hinder me from getting a job and live in Japan. You promptly answered me with "Yes. you are not an exception". 5 years later and I'm about to study abroad as an exchange student in Tokyo for one year. Whilst I didn't watch all of your videos, the ones that I did and the mail you wrote to me is part of what drove me this far, and I will be forever grateful for that! As I did in my mail back then, I wish you a happy future Dave!
I am assuming my response was to say, yes it will hinder you but don't let it stop you from trying. Haha, anyways That's awesome to hear many so glad you found success.

I've been following your channel since 2016 and I've been very thankful for it. I still go back to random videos from your channel from the walking/vlogging days just because they're cozy to me. It's been fun watching the development of techniques you've learned from a videography standpoint and what you've learned from working in Japan and teaching and catching the occasional podcast. I've really enjoyed the journey. I've yet to watch the video, I'm just starting it now, but I wanted to get that out of the way. I think the first time I saw an Alan Watts quote was on your channel. Reading the description, I see Thailand is next. Looking forward to more updates in the future! RUclips can be a time capsule. I imagine it'll be fun to look back on your own videos years from now to jog your memory.
Great to always reflect. Enjoyed listening to this. Sometimes even rewatch older videos when i see them being recommended again. Looking forward to seeing what this new chapter brings
I moved to Japan your last year at interac, left right after you moved to Kyoto.... became fluent, worked in international schools, ride motorcycles, got engaged.... Met you and drew. Time flies. Feels like a year ago I was signing the contract to become an ALT. I do miss Japan. However, the money is just not there. Even 400k yen a month isn't enough to have dreams. Just enough to have a family and work till you die. I need to move back to the States so I can build capital to start businesses in Japan. Be back within the next 5 years but Charles won't be there so that's sad.
Best of luck. That sounds like an exciting plan. It has (perhaps always?) been so difficult to be in a posiition where you can follow your aspirations. I hope you can find it.
I have so much respect for your ability to reflect and communicate your perspective on experiences. It makes me think of many times I've experienced one opportunity leading to another. That casual conversation that leads to an entirely new path in life.

Hi Dave, I know I'm late to the party but your videos have been extremely influential for me. You were one of the only J-vloggers that kept me grounded as a 15-year-old aspiring to go to Japan someday. Where others would be unreasonably positive, or heartbreakingly cruel you were in the middle talking about your experiences and opinions on the culture, society, and country. It was and will continue to be invaluable to me. I'm 24 now and although 15-year-old me hoped I would be in Japan by now, I know what I am doing with my life and my goal still remains the same and you will always be a core part of that. I wish you the best of luck in Thailand.
I would love to see what your next adventure becomes, I became a teacher for 3 years first in Japan and then in Vancouver. It was a fabulous journey and thanks for the advice before and I look forward to how your channel evolves.
Can't believe it's been ten years...I remember watching your first video chatting about life in Japan, I remember your words of encouragement when my wife and I decided to move to Japan, and now that we're here I'm excited to watch the next chapter of your journey as we explore ours. Ever forward!

Hi Dave. I think that thanks to your channel and a few others I have been living in Japan for 7 years now. Married to a Japanese woman, worked in schools from kindergarden to university, and decided I will stay here for good. Thank you for just talking and sharing your real experiences. Now that we have had the story of the good memories, I have to tell you that I would love to hear the other side! How did you get fired from the Ibaraki school? How did your relationships end with the past women on this channel? What happened with Wao Ryu Only in Japan? (As much as you can share respectfully). Best of luck in Thailand

I started watching your videos years ago. I think it was when you did an apartment tour when you lived in Ibaraki. You also showed us your Skyline 350GT. I even subscribed to your Patreon for a while until I ended up taking extended time out of employment to improve my health. You sent me a great photo of a shrine you took which, to this day, hangs in my office. I was even credited as a “Cat Stunt Coordinator” in your Day in Twelve Minutes! Since then, a lot has changed. Got married, got back in to work, and even took a 6 month sabbatical where I explored Japan on my own terms! It was amazing and your videos were an amazing resource (and even a driving factor, I’d argue) in that process. Thank you for that. I wish you the best of luck in your new home and in your new venture
This channel inspired me almost a decade ago. I had a dream and I could see it reflected through your videos. Four years in Japan, surprisingly, I had a similar experience to you. A few ladies in my town helped me in my Japanese and would drive me and other foreigners around. It was so fun. I still message one of them regularly since she became my Japanese mom. 😂. I just moved to the city from the country side with great ambitions to do something more long term. Thailand was an option this year. Japanese League basketball player wanted to start a business there and told me if I’d be interested in going. My recent ex is from there and she wanted me to go. I just don’t really want to go.
it would be cool to get back to your roots in terms of videos. Now you can make video about moving to Thailand and how to navigate life there. I know there is a lot of this content already, same for Japan, but in my search for information about living in Japan and being and ALT all those years ago, (2016) I found your videos to be the most grounded and practical.
