  • Someone was once again kind enough to write me an email asking a few questions regarding my experience of living and teaching in Japan. The topics range from how old I was when I arrived, and what is dating like in Japan.

    Great comments and insights on relationships and especially being happy with yourself first. Your comments on moving to Japan are very sobering and I can understand being driven by emotion on making that decision. I am considering trying to move to Japan but I have to admit it doesn't make much sense in terms of my career goals atm.

    I'm turning 28 in a couple weeks. I am looking at applying to go teach in Japan this year. Glad to know I am not the only one who is older looking at this (even though it's been in my plans for more than 10 years ha).

      Not teaching, but I'm also 28 and came to Japan earlier this year to do my research Masters. For the first 6 months, I was enrolled in a Japanese class, where I found that there were others who were in their 30s, while there were some 22 year-olds as well. I really depends on where you're from. For an example, where I'm from, we're required to work for a minimum number of years in order to be eligible to apply for certain overseas scholarships, so people from my country tend to be a little older when they go abroad for jobs or postgraduate studies. Also, I found that Japanese people don't give two farts about your age, if you put in the expected effort it's all going to be good.

      @@ismailniyaz5167 That's a really interesting opinion considering I've gotten the impression that Japanese society is very serious about age when it comes to Japanese citizens. Maybe the opposite is true for foreigners?

    very interesting video thanks for sharing! i appreciate that you talk about dating (as a foreigner) from a man's perspective, as most dating videos seem to be from the woman's perspective
    i'll be making my own 'life in japan' videos soon enough as well and your channel (and others like it) are really inspiring!

    I would love for you to do a response to this video now man! I'm 28 myself and in very similar shoes to you... Had a fiancée type situation here in the UK and things went sour (on her part not mine!)... I ended up going to Japan for a few months, where I drove from Saporro to Hiroshima with many detours to various places! Fell in love with the country and also met a girl over there! Pre-covid things were sweet and she came to the UK just before lockdowns became a thing and things were sweet but now with travel bans it's becoming strenuous trying to rock the long distance thing... So I'm exploring avenues of taking a career break in my established field to teach english over there while we figure out a plan! We already have made numerous plans to meet up in mutually 'open' countries which is all good in the meanwhile! I applied for some ALT and even sadly some dreaded ekaiwa roles for April 2021 not sure how successful I will be... Or even if applications are taken seriously at the moment! But I have applied since they are advertising... Any advice would be a great help! Although your videos are pure gold and I have learnt so much already from all aspects of life :)

      I actually gave up on the online applications for a lot of the eikaiwa and found that looking up recruiters on LinkedIn was a better way of going about it... Luckily I'm planning on just taking a career break in teaching English. I have pretty good credentials and an online presence on LinkedIn thanks to my career as an engineer... which meant I didn't have any issues with engaging people through it!

    Hi Dave, thanks for your video and explanations. My question to you is as follows: Being a language teacher and a foreigner from Canada in Japan; would you recommend to approach the Japanese language like English or French, meaning: start with the alphabet, then the auxiliary verbs such as "to Be" and to "Have"(Etre et Avoir) then start to build up vocabulary to make sentences? As kids would do?(sorry if the sentence if over long). The reason of my asking is that I am mainly familiar with occidental languages, such as English,French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, German, etc..over time it became easier and opened the doors to languages I did not even know existed, such as Surinam, because I speak Dutch and Creole from the caribbean, I understand it fully. In short, I have always use the same recipe in the same order to learn any given language. I must admit that Arabic is a lot harder due to the different alphabet, and prononciation wise, some sounds like "KH" coming from the back of the throat are difficult to make when followed by a double "rr" as in Bekherre (meaning =fine). But when I listen to Japanese speak, all the spectrum of sounds already exist in the French language. So, assuming that being Canadian, you might speak both English and French, can you relate to what I am telling you and concur or advise me on the best possible route to be taken to tackle the basics of the Japanese language? I've always figured that with 2 auxiliaries, the common subjects (I,You,he/she/it, we,you,they) and "what", "when", "where", "how" etc... the rest becomes just a matter of structuring the sentence and adding vocabulary as time goes by...Two very important rules I have learned in some 35 past years, two saying in their original respective forms, 1- "Oui, pain pouchi"(creole for= Yes never requires a why, or an explanation), 2_ Manarf (arabic for "I don't know" is the one word answer that covers the greatest number of questions without passing for a fool!).I'm gonna subscribe to your channel and keep watching more, thank Dave. You're very well spoken and appear to be a highly intelligent man, just wanted to mention that.
    I'm a younger guy, so I don't claim to have excellent foresight, but at this point of my life, Japan is the most appealing location for me. One of the most pivotal of issues for me is relationships. My hopes is to raise a family in Japan when I am older, so clearly it is valuable for me to know what to expect when it comes to being a good and desirable fatherly candidate for Japanese women. I agree wholeheartedly that finding yourself first is crucial to a healthy relationship, which is why I never dated in my teens. However, now I am confident that Japanese women are very much - in general - my style, but I do also hope that I can be someone else's fancy as well, which is worrisome for me as a would-be gaijin.
    One related question I have - if it is plausible for you to answer - is what if I wish for the mother to work; we hire a nanny; or I wish to spend an equal amount of time at home with the kids, is this at all socially acceptable? I love traditional gender roles, but I also realise how much more practical it is with two incomes, plus there is little reason for me to become a father if I am not more than the breadwinner.
    If you don't mind me asking an additional question: what was it about Japan that had you discover that you could not stay for much more than two years?

    Here in Texas. Don't see it as much as in my family culture. Salvadorean (not all, my family) lean towards the part where women pretty much are expected to take care of her man and her kids. 'old school tradition'. Especially in El Salvador but it is changing as things get more modern.

    So do u regret putting it of for your previous relationship? I wonder why shedidnt move with you. Im leavin in 3 years and idk what id do if i was dating someone at that time who i loved and who didnt want to move. Like u said, its a dream, and if you dont do what u love for someone else, it will often turn into resentment towards them. Good video. And about the traditional thing, thin ice indeed. I also get and respect both the working woman and the stay at home mother, but i myself will be on the working side at least for awhile. I do understand that much of japan is on the more traditional side but i do hope the youth in cities are open minded. Tbh at the first hint of a man expecting traditional servitude like behavior of me, i will leave. I can take care of myself and need someone who like ido respects either role a woman chooses. Of course people in a couple should take care of and nurture each other, just saying that having something expected of you is a pretty bad feeling, and i would become vehemently indignant. I do think japanese people understand that western women are less traditional and more independent. So thats a good thing.

    • @DaveTrippin
      @DaveTrippin  10 лет назад +4

      I agree with your perspective that an expected behavior is bad and hope that I made clear in the video that I support that opinion. I wish for people to be able to choose a role for themselves as apposed to whatever idea is being pressed onto them by others or societal norms, be that idea pressing on them an old traditional role or one of supposedly modern empowerment. Our ability to choose freely is what defines a truly progressed people I think. One style of living is not superior to the other, the right to define ourselves as individuals regardless of social pressure is. I really enjoyed reading your comment. In the deluge of people writing before thinking on RUclips you truly seemed to listen to what I had to say, and for that I am grateful.
      Cheers
