You can use the "Archimedes principle" to measure the density of your coins. Pure silver has a density of 10.49 g/cm^3. .900 silver should have 10.31 g/cm^3. Density = mass (dry weight) divided by volume (weight hanging in water). Water should be at 0.998 g/cm^3 at 20°C. Easy way to find out if it is really silver! 😉👍🏻
Ouch! I immediately checked a few of my ‘21 Morgan’s hoping not to find a 1921-O. You wouldn’t be able to simply weigh any coins first if you’re buying them off FB. 🤷🏽♂️ Good Luck Man 👊🏽
I was in a coin store about a year ago and they has a small machine that looked like a scale almost that was able to detect precious metals silver, gold etc...
Yes there are metal verifiers used for coin authentication but they are expensive to buy and many of us would rather use other ways to verify whether a coin is real or not.
Reinforces why buying raw coins off eBay or Facebook is full of risk. I know slabs can be faked as well, but you can at least check the certification numbers on PCGS and NGC sites (and see true views in some circumstances) to authenticate. It’s why so far, I’ve stuck with purchasing slabbed coins in the Morgan and Peace arena.
Slabbed coins are the way to go with online sales, unless you know the dealers intentions and integrity personally. I normally online buy raw coins at shows. Seems like there are hundreds of things that can be wrong with a coin. Its good to see it up close. This is a great comment.
I wish I was closer to a metropolitan area where there might be some shows but I’m not so I buy online but I’m learning more about what to look for with fakes and cleaned coins with the aid of videos like this one, thanks.

Thanks for the content. Faking a U.S. Coin is a Federal Crime and should land your seller in JAIL. Also, the sound of the fakes were a dead give-a-way too.
The sound is usually off also. But just compare a real one next to a freak 1 and it is impossible for the forger to get all of the characteristics proper you will see the fake
You point out a significant differences with the real and fake Peace dollars. Genuine business strikes have curved edges between the rim and the reeding. Fakes, often have flat, square rims, as found on 19th and early 20th century proof strikes. This crispness often contrasts with rough adjacent fields and rim lettering. It these contrasts that 'jump out' for educated collectors.
I got taken for an Oregon Trail commemorative about a year ago. I bought it from a seller on Mercari who abscounded shortly thereafter. Lessons learned are sometimes painful. 😌
There are two brand new sellers right now selling Fake commemorative dollar coins on Mercari for like $44.00 each. They are grey and I can immediately tell they’re fake but a bunch of people have purchased them the last two days. I report them but nothing is done about it until it’s too late

Fake silver dollars can still fool me on just the sight of them. But U.S. gold, is almost undetectable without use of a loupe, calipers and scale. Xray spectrometer use is the perfect way to go.
Good video! You will get better with time and experience. You’ll be able to spot a fake without it in hand. Also, I’m sure you’ve heard from others, oils from your hands will in time affect the coins you touch. 🧤
Thank you for the comment. With these groups of coins I have no reason for using a glove based on its condition. Always good to watch videos like this. Helps train your collector eye. Thanks for doing this video. 👍
Happy to do it. Sometimes stuff like this helps me more then it hurts!
