It's so brilliant the name they came up w/ for rue " blanche Deveraux " since she is a southern belle it sounds very much like blanche Dubois in street car a woman from the old south & played by Vivienne leigh of course played scarlett a southern belle too. It's just so smart
It's also cool how the 4 ladies came from such different locations blanche the south , rose the midwest & dorothy & sophia the north east. ( only the west coast wasnt represented but it's fine ) so w/ all of them living in Miami & telling their stories of their lives u get a feel for the small town mid west the southern old school wealth & of course the 2 big city gala from brooklyn u even get a double dose from sophia that sophia hailed from old world sicily. U always knew it was gonna be hilarious whenever she said " picture ir sicily 1922..." lol

Also the GG tackled serious topics like aids ( rose got a letter telling her she had a blood transfusion from a hospital b4 it was screening for diseases like hiv/aids, or addiction when rose had been taking pills for her back that also she relied in for sleep. Infidelity & divorce w/ dorothy ^ ex stan alternative ways or getting pregnant w/ blanche's daughter had a sperm donor & the very foward thinking & showing of homosexuality & on top of that dealing w/ a relative who has come out. They did a really good job w/ blanche's gay brother clay. It started off w/ blanche in denial than not accepting her baby brother to to her acceptance than her accepting he had a boyfriend to blanche getting rocked w/ clay wanting to get married & she could not accept that. This was major b/c as long as her brother wasnt flaunting being gay she was good but when he wanted to marry she's flipped. This led to one of my favorite moments when blanche & sophia are talking & sophia says " why did u & George * blanche's deceased husband * & blanche simply states " b/c we loved eachother " & sophos says " well doesn't clay serve that too ? " such a great scene.

Second: Rue McClanahan (Won in 1987, died of a stroke in 2010)
Third: Bea Arthur (Won in 1988, died from cancer in 2009)

I think writers struggled with what to with Rose's background. First, she was raised on a farm, then she her family were Vikings, later her family were Swedish. So wish Rose's family background was American Farming through out the eight season run of her character. But I love the Golden Girls I own about 10 sets of the complete series of the Golden Girls. I also bought all the seasons of The Golden Girls on You Tube. This my family and I love them. I just wish Rose's family background would stop changing through the run of the program.

In one episode she said a lot of her family stories were told by her Grandfather. He was off his rocker pretty much. Rose realizes he’s probably not the best source. But it makes sense to be from Minnesota, farm family but with Swedish heritage.

I love Bea and Dorothy was my favorite character, but in real life (even according to one of her sons) Bea Arthur was eccentric. She didn’t like chewing gum, wearing shoes, birds singing, and overly positive people. Betty was one of those positive people. Also, Betty was a tv veteran from the 1950’s and would memorize her lines almost immediately and have fun with the audience if she or one of her co-stars flubbed theirs. Bea, on the other hand, was from the stage and kept her script in hand until taping, only learning the lines through rehearsing and repetition. She tried to stay in character and not break the fourth wall by interacting with the audience.

Rue said the same thing on her book. It's even reported that Bea called Betty with a C word. Bea and Betty are both close to Rue. Maybe they are really friends for years but had fallen out.
