- Cast and creatives of NBC's The Golden Girls gather at PaleyFest LA 2006 to celebrate their show. Topics include: the show's renewed success after two decades; how the show defined loneliness; how the writers' work on the show impacted their later projects; the subtle use of exposition; why Betty White was almost cast as Rue McClanahan's Blanche and how each woman landed her respective role; the ill-fated spin-off Golden Palace; balancing the four unique characters; bawdy talk on the show; ideas for a big-screen update; and how the show has influenced current culture. #paleycenter Subscribe to Paley Center on RUclips: www.youtube.co...
The secret to the Golden Girl's success was having 4 leading actors in an ensemble willing to share the spotlight.
I agree! Betty White is just fantastic, no doubt, but it's easy for some to forget that they were all icons! They all supported things in the 80s outside of the show that were way beyond that time and frankly their age. They were all full of such intellect, brought their own thing to the table, and just played off of each other. I cry watching the show sometimes because how how much better the world would be if they were all still alive. And people that don't know GG sometimes know Betty White as only a cultural icon. She played a character unlike herself. Rue had a spot on old southern high society accent, Rue was a huge broadway star and they even turned the lights off briegly when she passed....and beautiful Estelle Getty MADE The. Sophia. Petrillo. These women are people to truly look up to as outstanding women and for their mastery at their craft.
Yep
Uhh, LoL, this isn't the only show to have that happen.
@@jaynedodd5528 They didn’t say secret to TV success. They were specifically talking about why this show worked. Obviously they aren’t the only ones to have this formula.
Amen to that!
You can see Rue and Betty come from an era when actresses dressed up for an occasion. They’re so professional in every way.
An era I loved!!
Exactly
Rest in peace all 4 Golden Girls now. Thank you for all the laughs.
Rest in peace Ameen
Rest in peace Rue, Bea and Estelle
unforgotten...
The Golden Girls is one of the best shows, ever. The characters were so well defined, that you couldn't help falling in love with them.
Stay well, Betty- I love you!
And now Betty, too.
@@oliviakirby1409 where did you hear that?
There is NO ONE in film that can deliver a one-liner like Beatrice Arthur. EVER
EVER!
Maybe Tallulah Bankhead but that's about it.
@@garydeblasio8810 I. Hear. Drama.🤣

Right you are!
Betty just turned 99 in January. A true living Legend and international treasure.

Almost 15 years later and Betty's still with us. God bless her.
And she's in the business book of world records for her career over 80 years

GOLD !
I just don't know if we'll ever see this level of TV magic again. The writing and acting were superb and truly funny. God bless these ladies' souls, may they RIP. Irreplaceable.
Absolutly THE BEST show, Ever!I love to binge watch the show and sleep to it at night. If I’m depressed, sad or not well I turn on The Golden Girls and I’m uplifted.......❤️😘
Me too!!!!
This is totally me. They’re like my happy place.
I thought I was the only one
Oscar Hernandez you are not! 😁
This is exactly what I do. There’s something unquestionably unique and exclusive about this brilliant show that is so fully loaded with comfort, humor, and just everything that is naturally good in life, that my precious mother, hours before she passed, was asking for the show (which I have felt great sorrow and was so hurting that the hospital didn’t pick up the channel). I love it-
Betty's zingers and Rue's impression of Bea Arthur slayed me LOL such lovely ladies, we were lucky to get such a good show to enjoy
I think it's time to rewatch the series now … for the millionth time. RIP to Estelle, Bea, Rue and of Paul Junger Witt.
I watched the final episode this morning. Cried like it was the first time I saw it.
R R, “you’re angels, all of you.” And ain’t that the truth.
Tanya Collett very true. Just watched S5 E1
I rewatched the entire series a few months ago and it was such a happy escape during lockdown.
And now Betty :(
RIP to all of these ladies. To this day there is no ensemble as timeless as they were!
Rue was 72 & Betty was 84 in this video, I never knew they were so much further apart in age ~ I knew Bea was actually very close in age to Estelle on the show but they made it believable as Mother & daughter ❤️ So sad Rue died 4 years after this video, due to a cerebral hemorrhage, we were lucky to have Betty 17 more years before passing just 17 days before her 100 birthday 🙏🏼♥️ I really enjoyed this video, thank you!
I watch the Golden Girls daily on Hallmark channel...I miss seeing them when they made various public appearances. I love the show and laughter is the best medicine.
Same!
*On a sidenote, Susan, is your last name really Bannister???*
To bad Hallmark has to celebrate Christmas in July and we don't get to watch GG. I had to subscribe to HULU so I can watch GG any time I want.
Watched this for the first time after Betty Whites passing and I could watch it over and over again The Goldens Girls were pure comedy gold, I’d like to think they are all sitting around that kitchen table now having a good old laugh! 💛
I've found it hard too watch after Betty white passing. Didn't realize how much I enjoyed that show.
I watched this show as a kid and now I am a golden girl myself; watching and rewatching the show on a loop as it is the funniest show ever written.
Bless those wonderful actresses who sadly have all left us.
Thank you for uploading this documentary, OP.
I have never seen an interview done as phenomenal as this. It’s so conversational, so casual and yet everyone was sharing the spotlight so well, not just Betty and Rue. They really compliment each other and it really shows how well they’ve worked together when on the set.
The way Betty hits Rue's arm in excitment talking about the reading...she was THE BEST
And now their Rose is finally back in their Heavenly garden! Rest well ladies.. Thanks for the laughter
Heart breaking news Betty White was the last ones had left this world.
They had made us laugh to tears. They were the best of all time.
R.I.P 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Our girls are all reunited and eating cheesecake again. Rest well, ladies. Thank y'all for being my friend. ❤️
Amen
All except Bea bc she hates cheesecake.
I was in my early twenties when The Golden Girls came out. I went to visit my mother. She asked me to stay & watch with her. It was the pilot. It was just wonderful. My mama & I were both hooked. It was wonderful. 💘
I still watch them, love them because they are angels.
No more Golden Girls now. May you rest in peace ladies. Thank you for the great sitcom.
So weird hearing Rue without a southern accent
Not to me , enjoyed seeing her as Ruth Rempley in one ep of All in the family, seen her once in Charles in charge as Grandma and she starred as a the main character for two years on Mama's Family. But of course she is most famous for Blanche Devereaux.
Not far different
@@chuckdieselkicksdisks2380 She also played a role in( Search for tomorrow) soap opera on ABC..she played a BAD ass crazy woman..can not remember if she killed some one by hitting him/her with a shovel and burried the body..can not remember the whole story line..it was more than 25 years ago

And she was born in Oklahoma, so it came naturally.
Such phenomenal talents - the writers and the actors - and such great characters. They all feel like friends. It really was a perfect storm of a comedy. Watching The Golden Girls, I feel at home!
Golden Girls is a success because of the cast, the writing, that family of friends feel, the optimistic outlook on older life. It was ahead of it's time in certain ways. The chemistry between the ladies. And it was just funny.

Been watching golden girls such a classic master piece. Has brought me so much joy in these hard times. Heart broken only one of these ladies is alive now. But thank you ladies for your hard work and sacrifices you all made into bring joy and laughter and love all around the world. Love you ladies sooo much you are terribly missed 🙏🏼❤️

Golden girls! Brought us so much JOY in life. Until now. RIP betty. You're with rue, bea, and estelle now. In golden heaven.
Rest in peace Betty White. We found out a few hours ago that you are no longer with us. Star will shine always and everything that you did for the animal rights community. You were the most amazing person ever! And you will never be forgotten. Rest with the angels sweet one.
I died when Rue impersonated Bea!!!
Estelle being the youngest, this breaks my heart.
Also, I wish this Interview would go on forever, this is such a delightful Video.
rue was the youngest
Rue was the youngest
Estelle was the 2nd youngest. Rue was the youngest. Betty was the oldest. It goes like this. Betty - Bea - Estelle and then Rue.
Rue was the youngest by several years
Rue is the youngest
Seeing Rue try not to break down crying after talking about Estelle suffering from Alzheimer's is heart breaking 😢😢
1:05:58 for anyone wondering, and I agree

The absolute best Sit com EVER !!! Thank you Thank all of you !! Comedy with a social conscience
I frickin love Rue McClanahan.
She is a great actor.
Special thanks to Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions and the brilliant writers.
Phenomenal actresses: Betty ,Bea ,Rue and Estelle. Emmy gold !!!!
Golden Girls still is a class act show with four very classy actresses.
Rue has got Groucho Marx timing. She keeps coming in with humorous asides to whatever someone else is saying.
She’s a genius
Thanks so much Susan! What a hysterical opening even though it was fear induced 😂❤❤
Rest In Peace Golden Girls.
Thank you for being a friend.
Such a joy to watch this show. Oh the laughs in the great beyond now that Betty White is reunited with her cast mates. 💕
RUE wlll die year after this taping and BEA ARTHUR will die 2years afteir this taping
This is my favourite comedy of all times. I have watched the whole series many times on DVD. I love watching the mother daughter dialogue between Dorothy and Sophia. Sophia is so cute.
24 years and I have all 7 seasons. My absolute favorite show!!
These woman where the entertainment in my youth. They remind me of my family and our gathering when watching tv. They make me smile and never tired of their episodes. No matter how many times I watched it. They are important in my heart and mind. I appreciate them and there will never be anyone who can take our hearts like these woman did. The whole team out did themselves. I'm blessed I was given their entertainment.
It was a great joy for me to hear Betty White saying “Sri Lanka”, name of my motherland.
I can’t get enough of the show ❤️
If only I could say to Rue how much Blanche means to me, how I kept my sanity thanks to her. God, Rest her in Peace! If only that woman knew how much she has helped me. 😢😢😢
The legendary Betty White and equally legendary Rue McClanahan. Those 4 ladies were incredible. It's amazing how after 30 years since it ended it is still as relevant now as it was then. R.I.P Estelle, Bea, Rue and Betty
This was a real joy to watch.
Love the way Betty played the air - violin while Rue was recounting some anecdote or other.😁
Susan Harris, what a legend.
What a wonderful funny comedy. I suffer from severe depression but it helps me laugh and cope with life. Brilliant programme x
My heart is with you. I was on the same boat for many years. Golden Girls was always a cure for a good while. Sending love.
Poor Rue. She looked so sick. I just loved her. I wish all four of them were still alive.😭
She looked as good as she possibly could here but she does look sick here.. sad how Rue and Bea just faded away .. age sucks and sickness too.
Bea Arthur is missing here for feeling “under the weather”. It was filmed March 10, 2006. Bea showed up a year later on The View with her “Maude” co-star Adrienne Barbeau, on March 17, 2007 to announce the DVD release of season One of Maude. According to audience members, Bea’s doctor told them to go easy her while asking for autographs as Bea was “very sick”. Hindsight shows that Bea was probably sick with lung cancer for three years before her death in April, 2009 at 86.
I love Rue, but she didn’t seem to enjoy the longevity her co-stars had. She was seventy-two here and looked about the same age as Betty White, who was 84. It wasn’t as surprising that she would be gone in just four years in 2010. Incidentally, Estelle was 82, but already suffering from Lewey body dementia, that she would expire from in 2008.
Betty will be 100 in January, but her three co-stars succumbed to brain disease, lung disease, and heart disease like so many people their age (and even younger).
@@jimhaggard7436 And unfortunately Betty succumbed to a stroke. However, at nearly 100, she had to succumb to something.
@@divatalk9011 a stroke is probably the easiest way to go. It appears she suffered a stroke Christmas, but didn’t appear to be hospitalized.
@@jimhaggard7436 Her stroke may have been easier, I hope. I hope she suffered very little
I’ve watch this show from day one and I watch the reruns every single day till now they relax me make me laugh so at least two or three episodes every night

Thanks for posting the full version 🌻.. Wonderful.. 💜🌿
Rest easy ladies I absolutely loved you all and still watch until this day 2024...I don't have a favorite character you all did your thing and Bea you did that in Maude😊😊😊....❤❤❤❤❤
I've lost both my parents before the age of 27. And whenever the grief started to consume me again, I would always to go to the golden girls for comfort. But now, whenever I'm grieving and emotional, I can't even watch the golden girls because I'm honestly devastated about the loss of Betty about 6 months ago now. They are all gone now and it honestly hurts way more than it should considering I've never even met her. I was just a young teen when the other three died so I never had to deal with it because even though I'd seen it, I didn't keep up with that sort of thing back then. But honestly, I've never hurt more from a celebrity death than Betty's. Carrie Fishers death was tough, so was Robin Williams...but nothing like this. I've only grieved more for my parents and my younger cousin, it's honestly like a death inside the family. I hope it eases because tonight's one of those nights for me and all this is doing is making me even more emotional. EDIT: And in just one sentence, betty had me laughing and smiling. God bless her, I hope she's happy and back in Allen's arms once again
Please Rest in Peace Betty. A beloved actor and a kind soul, you will be missed my dear. Rest well :(
Rest In Power Ladies 🙏🕊️
What a talented group of artists. It warmed my heart to hear the talent that came together to bring us all so much joy and laughter. Truly a special show created by many special people! I cannot watch the last episode without bawling my eyes out... I just stop at that one and go back to the beginning. So sad we’ve lost so many these talented actresses. What a blessing their gifting gave and continues to give us all!
Props to writer Winifred Hervey who was part of this show too. The writer who went on to create In The House and The Steve Harvey Show. Many don't realize GG had a Black writer who worked on 177 episodes from Day One.
Betty White - National Treasure. RIP!
Absolutely the best show on television EVER
I wish they were all still here
I watched them in 1985, and still love the show today.
No you are too young to have watched in 1985. You look about 26-28 max!
It’s wonderful to see and hear Rue, Betty, and the crew share so much love, respect, and gratitude to each other. I enjoyed this very much 💗
While I entertained hundreds she entertained millions every week and now is with us forever. God bless Betty and all the Golden Girls
It was amazing. So sad Betty is the only one left. In this, I loved the homage and just love and respect they showed for Bea and Estelle. I love Golden Girls. My gram loved them and I still hear her laughing her toosh off. Love you gram, my golden girl.

They forgot about Stanley ! He was so good also
True. I loved Stanley.
The episodes with Stanley are my most favourite.
@Tanya Collett Herb Edelman (Stan) passed in 1996
I liked Stan very much, so funny.
Hi, it’s me Stan.
In Mexico the show was called “ Los Años Dorados" (if I remember correctly) and I remember watching it in the early 90’s. It was dubbed to Spanish very well done. Mexican Voice Over Actors are the best when it comes to dubbing movies and T.V. Shows to Spanish. I really liked the show. I was n my late teens back then. When I came to The States, I watched the show years later (late 2000’s) and of course, I loved it with the original voices. The four Girls were AMAZING. No one was better than the other one. The writing was very well balanced and the four of them delivered each character extraordinarily well. I love them! they’ll always be in my heart ♥️. I’m watching all seasons again!
I wish this could have been longer. I could listen to them for hours.
Hi folks
Oh, I miss them all. We still have the lovely Betty White but the whole cast of The Golden Girls was lightning in a bottle. They were so fabulous together.

As much as they made fun of poor Tammy Faye, TAMMY WAS one of the first people (let alone Christians!) to have a kind and loving talk with an AIDS patient.
