When I first watched this I didn't think that much of it other than Ty lee being a thrillseeker but now I realize that this was Azula threatening Ty lee to join her, and if Ty lee didn't take the 'universe's' hint she would have done the same thing tomorrow...with blindfolds.
It wasn’t that hard to figure out … 😂
@Elijah-bj8pv Eh, I was 9 when I first saw this. I did take things at face value.
Yeah, the first time I watched I thought Ty Lee was just really naive, but now I see she was being threatened and felt endangered
@@isaacpianos5208more like she felt like she didn’t want to bring trouble to the circus since it became her new home and family
@@girlgaming7346 one could say that's how a "threat" feels
This scene really shows you how much Azula relied on fear and intimidation to get what she wants. She even gave Ty Lee the false sense of security of thinking that she had the right to say "No." to her offer. Azula even brushed off Ty Lee politely decling her offer, only to turn around at the last second and basically say, "I will attend your show tonight and make you accept my offer." She truly is a master manipulator.
Until her control breaks down after Mai betrays her.
@@youtubeistryingtocensorme One of my absolute fave scenes in Avatar. I love the face Azula makes when Mai tells her that her love for Zuko is stronger than her fear for her. Just chef's kisses 🤌🏾
Only Azula could make so innocuous a phrase as "I'm going to catch your show before I leave" sound so incredibly ominous.
it's incredible that Azula's team are 2 non benders
Being a bender doesn’t make you better stronger or smarter than anyone else I’m sure what the show was wanting to say too
@@Xxsorafan The avatars think otherwise...
She already had power on her side, what she sought in allies was competency. Even if they have no bending skills, lethality and skill are all Azula wants.
@@BlueSoulGamer I would also make the argument that Azula liked control and essentially it would be easier for her to handle two non-benders as opposed to benders (of any element). Ironically, everything that Azula wanted with her team ended up being her biggest weakness as she assumed they feared her bending but only the other fire benders in the series seemed to fear her. Many of the non-benders (Ty Lee, Mai, Kyoshi warriors) did not.
@@XxsorafanAang definitely thought otherwise
I'm in a middle of a rewatch now and was reminded of how manipulative this scene was. I also noticed that Ty Lee wouldn't stop complimenting Azula. I just thought she was super nice, but if that were the case, she would be complimenting everyone the same way. Now I'm wondering if that was her way of appeasing Azula because she was scared.
Me too
Yes, exactly. She was always scared of Azula.
I think Ty Lee not only joined the circus to stand out among her sisters, but to also get away from Azula
It is. If you get to the beach episode you see her do it again where she worships azula and gives nonstop praise IMMEDIATELY after Azula made her cry in order to deescalate when Azula admits she was jealous. She knew that put a target on her so she pushes away the thoughts by asserting that Azula is actually better than her.
Didnt Ty Lee actually say that she really does admire Azula or something like that in the episode where the girls and Zuko take a mini vacation to that one island? I dont think that Ty Lee's idolizing of Azula was fake at all, its just that Azula eventually went too far.
Poor Ty Lee. Abandoning a job she clearly loved because her so called friend wanted her to.
Yet there is also a bright side. If she hadn't quit she would have never joined the Kyoshi Warriors. Thanks to her skills she helped reinvent their fighting just a bit
It's not her friend, shes her princess. She needs to obey. Azula present herself as an "old friend" or aquantaince, but you can see Ty Lee bow, so she knows shes still holding power over her.
@@AP-pk9gw🤔 It's kind of both isn't? I mean yeah Azula is the princess but I think she's using both positions to manipulate Ty Lee. She used the friend card first to ask her childhood friend in joining her mission and I think because of that, Ty Lee had the courage in turning down Azula's offer. Then later on, Azula used the princess card to get her way to remind Ty Lee just how dangerous she could be if Ty Lee didn't reconsider uniting with Azula. Azula had probably thought Ty Lee would be the easiest to recruit since she usually follows without questions.
“Of course before I leave, I’m going to catch your show”-I remember even back when I was a kid watching this just by seeing the look on Ty Lee’s face right after Azula said that, you can tell Ty Lee was definitely very suddenly less happy and worried.
Azula: How could you 2 betray me???
Me: It s actually sad that for someone so smart she never truly understood that blackmail, threats and punishments never really help to build strong relationships. Fear does help but it s eventually overwhelmed by other emotions like love. Mei betrayed her because she loved zuko and ty lee betrayed her because she actually cared for mei not azula.
she manipulated everyone...even herself
she convinced herself that relationships were just something that could be forced or coorced...because of this she could never get the love that she genuinelly wanted because she didint understand it.
shes the textbook example of a narcisistic sociopath who only understands emotional connection to a point where they can use it to manipulate others..but cant actualy experience these feelings themselves.
Fear isn’t way.
A sense of safety also helps. Fear only works as long as the other person feel they're vulnerable. Mai and Ty Lee betrayed Azula out of love, but anyone who'd be under, say, Ozai's protection could also betray her in the blink of an eye.
@@kaininjapoke1hero81 it is but not the solution
Narcissism doesn't abide by the same scope of normal platonic interaction
Azula and her father do not orient things like love as a benefactor. To them the world consists of givers and takers. Then when they meet formidable opponents (say the earth kingdom) it's a contest of who reigns as the primary taker
This is why Fire Lord Sozen couldn't perceive that what he was doing was wrong. To him it was an inconvenience that there was such a thing as the avatar. Someone that close to him with so much power casts a shadow over his mortal throne
Kind of like Lex Luthor. To think that it takes so much to be a man by mortal strides for someone gifted to come along and make short work of your accomplishments
Back to narcissism though. It comes down to how well you can play to your strengths and influence others to do the white washing. If you've had that as your forte, for generations even, it would make sense to assimilate the talents of others to do your bidding. In fact it's probably right that they should associate with you because their talents would be better suited under your authority
Love and goodwill rarely factor into the equation. Not unless you find someone who undoes your grip on control while simultaneously having mastery of their own right. Then again, this love is rooted in attraction, I'm just describing the kind of person Azula would fall for, someone who loosens her thread on competition. Love after that would be a genuine desire to see that person flourish. Not how she can manipulate that person to do her bidding
2:05 Mai offering her dad some fire flakes during an outbreak was so random😂
I mean it’s intentional to point out her complete indifference even in the face of fear/catastrophe.
fire lakes? I get that this is a typo, but still a hilarious thought.
They gotta do something to pad out her non existent "exists to be a love interest for Zuko" character.
@@Momofan69 I never got that impression. Especially since they don’t even start off that way.
The fact that Ty Lee can support her entire weight with just her index fingers 😮😮
That's more impressive than anything Sakura did
@@josephgover5072 Sakura can heal?
@@josephgover5072people irl can do what Ty Lee did after a lot of practice and training. No one irl is gonna be able to literally heal your injuries and also smash the earth beneath their feet. I get people dont like Sakura, but c'mon already 😮💨

@@josephgover5072where was the correlation???
This scene is what makes me think Azula didn’t understand the difference between friendship and manipulation. She showed true affection to her, even smiling and hugging her back. However to a person who manipulates others, of course she wouldn’t understand why her two ‘friends’ betrayed her.
Accidentally kidnapping a key hostage is just so on brand for the gaang 😅
Danka42
That is exactly what Azula doing here she kidnap Tylee when she sabotaged her act.
@@chrismaccool9097 yeah, she made it very clear what kind of "choice" Ty Lee really had
@@Danka42 her mother was right all she been doing is using fear to get her companions and everything else she wants not cool Azula.
Love your profile picture. She's always been one of my favorites.
@@dinodisneylover1 Sunset is the best girl ❤️
Love how Azula doesn't use brute force or verbal abuse to coerce Ty Lee but resorted to manipulation and intimidation so eloquently. To think that she's only 14 and a master manipulator, she's the reason why I love ATLA even more. She's a villain well written ❤
She COULD tho and she makes it clear...
Azula has always been like this, calculating and ruthless.
Yet she miscalculated
Imagine being told when you grew up that you were kidnapped by the avatar and their friends when you were a baby
Even as a child I knew exactly what Azula was doing.
We all knew, you are not special.
I love that Omashu is pretending to be sick, and one guy fully commits by falling over.
My sister told me about a theory that Ty Lee is from an air bending ancestors. Air bending is more flowy and acrobatic- and Ty Lee is that girl. She’s like from air nomads who hid in the fire nation to protect their families. Sounds familiar? Yep, much like Hama.
Most likely any of her descendants would've become airbenders after Harmonic Convergence.
Look at the eye colors. Aang and other airbenders had gray eyes; Fire Nation folks’ eyes were amber.
So that’s actually not a bad theory.
Or she's just talented.
The only issue is she comes from a noble family of the fire nation.
Hard to imagine her having some random nomads in her récent ancestry.
@@etienne8110 Didn't japan set up a bunch of camps where they impregnated women 325 hours a year? If the fire nation did something similar with the air nomads women, and took one or two children home, then that could be a possibility
Its an extremely dark theory, I know.
Azula used her power and knowledge to manipulate those around her. Only her father was the only one she couldn’t do this to.
That is because he learned it from him
3:46 after my 50th watch through, I finally realized they used this meme sound effect here
Mai's dad seemed like such an honorable, loving, and respectable man in this episode...(iyk)
The universe has give me a sign that it.
'''Say that after the princess burn the circus"*
I'm shocked Azula hugged her back.
She does care abt ty lee and mai I think. Just not in the right ways due to her upbringing
Ty Lee has always had this Aangesque energy to her. So whimsical🐥💚
We're Azula and Tylee Ever friends at all or were they just girls that hung out at the palace As I do not think they were ever friends I think Tylee and Mai were just girls Azula used for entertainment.
I Wonder to but in one of the episodes I feel like azula actually cared for them but didn’t know how to show it
@@OzenEater well Azula really needs to work on that where ever she was taken to at the end let's hope she can find redemption in the pain and fear she and her country has in inflicted on to others.
And I bet they only knew each other because Mai and Tylee parents were diplomats who served the royal family and brought their daughters to the palace which is how Azula met them.
And I hope Aang took her bending away so she can't use it to hurt or threaten anyone with it ever again.
@@dakotastein9499 well Azula should take a deep breath and look around and see that it is not all about her just like Aang Sokka Katara and Toph and Zuko should have.
@@chrismaccool9097 You have a point, and not excusing her actions, but it really makes me wonder how environment and family roles play a matter into things. They're children who don't know anymore than what they've grown up with. Zuko could've turned a similar way, had he not been banished and moved away from Ozai's and Azula's influences, and was more influenced by Iroh. Toph, Katara, Sokka and Aang had each other, and other positive influences that helped them break out of their more "negative" tendencies.
I wonder if Azula, over time with this kind of positive influence, can "unlearn" some of her more toxic tendencies. It's probably harder for her to unlearn more than Zuko because she directly benefitted from instilling fear into others to get the acceptance she wanted. Even if it's bad, I can see it being harder for Azula to let those things go because she got immediate results from it.
It's super messed up and sad, but in short, Azula might've actually cared for Mai and Ty Lee. But she was probably so messed up from Ozai's influence and propaganda, she probably doesn't really know how to show affection in a positive way. She would have a LOT to work to do on her end.
I've been searching for this scene forever!!! Thanks for finally letting me watch it without having to watch the full episode!
0:29 Mama Platypus bear, Platypus bear cub, and an egg. What a beautiful family.
She’s manipulative and deceptive…but I think Azula truly cared for Ty Lee. She even let her hug her and it doesn’t seem like Azula is the touchy touchy type. It’s probably why she goes into spiral of anger, sadness and confusion after Ty Lee and Mei betrayed her.
I think if the Netflix version of this masterpiece survives for books 2 and 3, we'd all be interested to see who will portray Ozai's Angels!!!
Agreed!
There are already actors cast to play all of them, and I've heard rumours that they might appear in season 1 of the adaptation
Exactly
Did you just reference Charlie's Angels?

Ty Lee is so flexible ☺☺😀
I HATED that they got rid of these scenes in the live action and started with team Azula altogether. It took away so much from all the characters ESPECIALLY AZULA. It was so much more impactful to discover the characters' abilities and personalities in scenes like this instead of just having a script that has the actor TELL you everything you should know about them.
Speak the truth sis
Bc seasons 2 and 3 haven't come out yet, and these scenes are in book 2 and book 3...

When i was younger, i didn't know why ty lee didn't want azula at her show. Seeing as they were shown to be friends. Even when it came to the performance i didn't realize azula was intimidating ty lee i thought she was just trying to make the show more interesting
Glad coppa didn't block the comment section this time
TYZULA!!
Ty Lee was happy to be in the circus, before Azula came
But everything changed when Azula, Princess of the Fire Nation spectated the circus....
There's such a dissonance in Ty Lee's smile in her first scene with Azula, and the second one.
First one, Ty Lee shows genuine happiness: she's elated to see her friend, but you can tell there's a hint of performative action, since Ty Lee KNOWS that Azula can be very manipulative to get what she wants, so she tries to decline, while still praising her so to avoid her wrath.
Her worry when Azula claims she'll watch her show is a hint the princess has done a similiar tactic before.
And by the second scene, Ty Lee's smile and speech feel even more fabricated, there's nothing genuinely enthusiastic about her expression: she has to fake Azula didn't do anything, that it was her choice to join her cause.
Otherwise Azula might use even harsher methods to make her change her mind.
Agreed. She sounded mechanical and her eyes, smile, and tone of voice were so flat when addressing Azula after the show e. What’s even more terrifying is that Ty Lee couldn’t let on that she was only joining because of Azula’s threats
4:37 wait what! 😮
We see where Azula got the Platypus line from.🤣🤣 A Platypus Bear is shown in this scene.😂
I love this show and the netflix live action so much
I finished watching all of Avatar in a week and now I am on the last season of Korra. Kuvira is a lot like Azula. I keep half expecting them to reveal that she actually is Azula reincarnated or something. What a plot twist that would be.
Difference was Kuvira cared for the Earth Kingdom. Azula only wanted power.

Always love this scene of nostalgia
Imagine going to school with Azula. Or don't, Ty Lee's instant fear when Azula says she'll be sticking around is enough to give an idea.
Without the elemental bending these people will be nothing to Ty Lee
Poor ty lee
Ty lee so cute
Momo getting trolled
Just blindfolds? She probably added some more threats like have the pillars damaged until they're halfway or almost completely broken, replace the rope with a thick rusty metal cable soaked in water and flammable oil and set it on fire on both ends.
I believe behind the scenes, when Ty Lee was being intimidated by Azula on circus, she was forced to say "Yes" only to get away from the danger Azula put Ty Lee in. It's really haunting.
Why does this scene always give me fanmade vibes
