Zuko is not afraid or ashamed if Mai touches his face and scar, he leans into it, means he truly trusts her.
And Mai who we in the beginning saw as an apathetic, cold girl showed more and more emotions when around Zuko.
And if she doesn't talk, she stays at his side, offering the support of "I'm here if you need me"
And of course the iconic moment that shows that Love is stronger than hate and fear

Yeah, like maybe in Book 2 we'd see one of Azula's attempts to capture Zuko and Iroh. We'd see some interaction between Zuko and Mai that would foreshadow them getting together.

People who say this couple is toxic probably only remember the beach episode (which ended with them reconciled anyway). Every other instance on the show itself has shown them to be very loving and supportive.
That episode brought a lot of issues to the surface too, not just theirs. It was the point of that episode.
People think healthy relationship means all rainbows and butterflies.. that's not true or realistic
Mai fought to save him, sacrificing herself for him. She was supportive and understanding. She knew he needed her support that time. She put her ego aside to understand and support him. That was a big step for her.
Honestly once they worked out their issues at the beach, they became a lot better as a pair.
The answer would be quite Easy: Azula.
Mai being her friend Is seen (rightfully so) as toxic, of course it's not their fault that girl's a psycho
I love how nothing can make them not love each other... Zuko's banishment, their parents, war, Azula, rebellions, mental health problem...they love each other no matter what. and they always push eachother to do better and become better people. Love them, such amazing couple.

the fact that mai is a cold, apathetic and extremely introverted person, but when around Zuko she changes entirely, she’s comfortable enough to express her world and emotions to him, she wants to help him improve and make him feel better. even though he was banished and seen as a disappointment, even though he practically “dumped” her, leaving her with no explanation, she waited for him, she fought for him, she sacrificed and “betrayed” her best friend and nation only to save him. she truly loves him, and that’s exactly the type of love that he needs.
Azula betrayed her and ty lee from the start. She only wanted to controll them to get what she wants and never cared about how they felt, they just put up with it and when she stands up against herself its suddenly betrayal. its called consequenses to my actions and karma. why should azula not be held accountable? A real friend dosent boil their man, or theri own brother. A real friend dosent put fire on their nets during performance itching for them to fall trough and get hurt. Dont EVER judge a person for leaving a toxic friend.
@@Yeyeyayayoyo yeah true, although Azula had some sort of childhood trauma because of her mother not “loving her enough”, it does not justify her actions of using people like they are her puppets. Zuko suffered from the same kind of trauma with his father, if not even worse, and he still decided to change his path for the better. Azula was born with evilness, that’s clear and simple.
Precisely. Zuko’s come a long way, and he’s totally deserved it and earned it.
Also, if you mess with her family, she will come for you like nobody's business. When her brother was kidnapped, she came for her brother's captors like Michael Myers tried to come for Lori in the new Halloween movies.

I love how during "The Boiling Rock" Mai is blinded by love and can't really understand why Zuko had to leave. Granted he could have brought her with him but that would put her at risk. In the end it's her love for Zuko leads her to betray Azula alongside Ty Lee.

I think she was blinded by pain, not love, if she was blinded by love, she would be doing everything in her power to care and support him even without knowing his reason for leaving. Which of course happened but only after they talked, which is fair

Azula was shipping Mai and Zuko from the start. Omg crazy how losing their mom changed their relationship so much.
I don't think she "ships" it, I think she only sees it as a way to control them both. If anything, she is annoyed and later hates their relationship when she cannot control them. She literally humilates them both when she first found out about Mai's crush and puts Mai in danger for it by shooting fire at her.
In her own, psychotic and insane way. It was probably more for twisted entertainment than actual help for her brother and "friend"

I love Zuko and Mai's relationship! She loved him for who he was, not because he was a prince. I don't understand why some people think they didn't have chemistry when they clearly did.
I think it's because their displays of love and trust are more subtle than is typically shown in media

@tankers3811 I don't think it was because he was fire lord, in my own opinion. People forget that in the boiling rock episode, Mai saved Zuko and everyone else's lives, despite the fact that Zuko broke up with her to travel with Aang. She even betrayed Azula because she said she truly loves Zuko. Mai loved him despite his title, and even after he became an outkast.

I wished we could get to see how Zuko's banishment affected Mai and her views. It must have been a big trauma for her as well, especially being stuck with Azula afterwards (Ty Lee apparently ran off soon after as well). She probably could not also talk about it with anyone due to the reputation of her family, since any ties with banished prince would be harmful for her family.
Btw Mai constantly touches his scar. She touches that side of his face every time they kiss.

I love their relationship and how you can tell they love each other it’s funny that people think when two people fight it means toxic relationship what I love about them is that their relationship is realistic they fight but still protect each other as much as they can especially when Mai helped him and his friends to escape that what you call true love not two people only love each other and don’t have problems of course they will have problems but still they will be there for each other.

I loved episodes like ember island. It gives the audience a chance to see the "bad guys" in a more complex and humanistic light. So few shows have that level of character development.

The other couples in the show are nice. I like Kataang and Sukka. But my favorite is Maiko.
I've never thought much of this, but I think part of the reason why Mai and Zuko are my favorite ATLA couple has to do with them knowing each other since little and them coming from the same Nation. I find tgat connection quite powerful.
I hope movie coming next year Avatar Studios is working on has some Maiko moments.

I just hope the series can further explore their relationship. I know the latest we known were their breakup at one point then it just got quiet till the new series, Korra. There we got to see Zuko already had a daughter and a grandson but we never know his spouse. Just hope the teams can explore further. @@fernandoamaya8771 Yeah. There is a comic that further dive into the series after the cartoon. It's touch the conflict that Zuko had to bear by being Fire Lord. At certain point, Mai broke up with him cause he became too secretive and did not want to share with her.

Katara and Zuko I don’t even know what to make of that. They never seem interested in each other. It’s like when you’re in middle school and people think y’all have crushes going on just cause you converse with the opposite gender. Unless I’m really forgetting something, there was never anything that made it as if they felt any attraction or feelings for each other
Zuko and Jin, she was very sweet obviously but the whole point of that was to show Zuko having a nice time and not really knowing how to deal with that. At least that’s how I interpreted the 2 minutes they had together

I'm pretty much on Mai side when Zuko left her the letter. I'm sure Mai would go with Zuko if he ever thought to ask her came along. It's funny how Mai critized Zuko's behavior in Ember Island considering he was gentle to her the whole time and she was the one shutting him down. Plus, saying stuff like "stop worrying" or "remember how things turned out last time" are pretty tone deaf 😅. P.S.: I like Mai, she has her character growth and we can assume her conversation with Zuko in the Boiling Rock along with being in prision with the Kyoshi warriors changed her heart about the war

I'm glad they did avatar live action justice. The problem with most live action is the sets, costumes that feels "fake" but I didn't feel it in the newest Avatar live action (not the other one). However, the live action also did have some miscast, including Mai. She doesn't look like anything in the series nor does Azula. Ty Lee looks quite similar though
