- If you’ve been around the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom long enough, you’ll encounter the “Ty Lee as an airbender” theory. In Season 2, this fan favorite entered the scene as Azula's lively childhood companion, but some fans think there's more to her story than meets the eye. And the result of this theory might culminate in Ty Lee not being among the living during the events of The Legend of Korra.

I fully believe she went around the world sharing her knowledge of Chi Blocking during/after her time with the Kyoshi warriors, explaining the Equalist Chi Blockers (I wish we saw more of the Equalist after season 1)
Same! Only one season (and a video game) of Equalists sounds wrong.
Tbf chi blocking was already well known of by the time of Korra. Just not practiced by many. Ty lee taught the Kyoshi warriors chi blocking and Suki (a Kyoshi warrior) taught the non bending republic city police force chi blocking, but I guess they stopped learning after she goes back to Kyoshi island as no police use chi blocking by Korra's time (that we know of), but from what I remember it was in fact Suki who brought chi blocking to republic city. Maybe alot of the equalists and chi blockers that worked under amon were disgruntled ex non bending police officers that were part of the generation that trained under Suki or received training from the people who trained under her. Before chi blocking faded under the shadow of metal bending police.
I’m not so sure that Ty Lee could have beaten Zaheer. Don’t forget that Ty Lee would have been in her mid 80s during the events of TLOK, and we saw how age took its toll on the ATLA characters. Zuko at that age pretty easily lost to P’Li in a fight, Toph had major back issues after merely dodging Korra for an afternoon, and Katara just didn’t fight at all. Time wasn’t as kind to the Gaang as it was to Bumi, Iroh, Paku, and the other elder characters in ATLA.
I think the reason the gang became so much weaker due to old age than the elders in ATLA was because they aged in relative peace time. Most of their problems after the war were political meaning less encouragement to stay in peak physical performance.
To be fair other than Bumi the other white lotus members are in their 50’s-60’s not mid - late 80’s

Just a thought, TyLee being Pema’s mother would be a wonderful idea and make so much sense. Sure would be nice if we’d gotten more Pema backstory.

@@AntoineBandele not necessarily. There’s a lot of things they “didn’t mention” that they could have. They kept a lot of things very vague or steered away from to keep the focus on the main crew of LOK. They seemed to want to keep them limited to any future comic lines. Unfortunately, this hamstrung them a lot in how they went about their stories. Pema is plays a big part in some aspects of the show, especially being the matriarch of the new Air Nomad tribe. Her background as an air acolyte should have been expounded upon, something that would have made sense for Ty Lee to encourage her to pursue as her “mother”, making even more sense when you combine that with Pema sticking her nose out to convince Tenzin he was making a mistake being with Lin.
Katara could have done something, didn’t always have to fight, but didn’t pull much weight.
You’d think that the Red Lotus could have been developed more and their past expounded upon, but it didn’t. All we know is that Chief Sokka, Tenzin and Zuko were part of the team that took them down, but we don’t know how it happened and still don’t have a good idea on if this was Sokka’s fate.
They only gave us the name of who Kim’s father was because something to satiate the fans with since they decided to give Toph more of a role, and we still don’t know Suyin’s father.
Probably an even more egregious act is not clueing us in on if Zuko and Mai were still together.
There’s still a lot of things we don’t know about in LOK, when in ATLAB we got massive world building, very detailed information about nearly everyone’s lives and the history of the nations while making it all make sense. Part of that is definitely Nick’s fault, but the creators share some blame as well. But for all of it to be relegated to a different medium is sloppy. Not saying we have to have all the answers, but at the end of the day, 10 years later, we still have more questions than we have answers.
I rather doubt it. Tenzin is Aang's youngest son and he is almost 20 years older than Pema. That would mean Ty Lee would have had Pema very late in her life. Which doesn't really fit well with Ty Lee. I think fans would rather have certain characters have a connection than for said connection to make sense. Like with Sokka theorized as Suyin's father. It doesn't really make sense but some fans just prefer the idea of Sokka having a child with Toph than if it even would work or make sense.
It's fine if Pema's parents aren't characters we knew or aren't important. They don't have to be.

@@joesunday199 we didn’t expect that TyLee would become a Kyoshi warrior, but doing this could have brought some attitude changes for her over time. Let’s not forget that she didn’t like being a part of a matched set and wanted to get away from that for a while. Sure, that doesn’t completely mean that she wouldn’t have tried to have kids immediately, but she could have still had kids into her 40’s and 50’s if she was able and it’s not out of the realm of possibilities. She could have had just a couple kids, or she could have had a dozen or so.
My mom was 40 when she had my little sister, and she and my dad weren’t trying to have anymore after my two brothers were born. So we can’t assume that she would have just stopped.
Sure, we don’t “need” to have Pema’s backstory, but it would have been very beneficial in the long run to clear some crazy things up.

Just to add to this theory, I think if Ty Lee is an airbender descendant she could be a descendant of a member of the Guiding Wind faction. They had plenty of dealings with the Fire Nation, sometimes recruited from nobility, and knew/taught their non-airbending recruits chi-blocking.

Ty Lee is very old, what's surprising if she was dead. I mean, she lived a long and probably full life. It's not a tragedy that she was dead by that time. It's passing of time.
Until the Avatar creators confirm it, I won't believe it.

Plus Katara did say her brother and some of their friends have passed. So I do believe Ty Lee passed. But like many of u said, unless the creators make it into canon, then we’ll definitely know for sure.

It could be that Ty Lee did not acquire air bending at all also. The harmonic convergence works in mysterious ways. Just because you descend from air nomads does not automatically mean you have air bending.
Think it’s possible she just retired and got old. I mean she would have been in her late 80’s early 90’s by the time of Book 3 right?
She could be at home helping raise her grandchildren or great grand children
Theory: It’s possible that when the Air Temple genocide happened most of the air benders went into hiding and gave up their traditions (bending included) only for their descendants to have the ability to air bend too but simply not use it because they were never taught to do so by their parents. So when harmonic convergence happened in LOK all of the new air benders weren’t given that element, they always had it thanks to their ancestors but they never knew about it until that time.

I hate how legend of Korra actively tried not showing legacy characters like Ty lee,suki,or Azula,how you gonna have old katara,toph,and zuko and have them not interact,there’s gold mine
Because LOK is it’s own show and trying to avoid fabricated fan service like that. I much prefer the approach they took with the legacy characters: few and far between. Unlike SW which needs to show Legacy characters in every corner of their entire GALAXY.

Something similar to kyoshis mom where the more she was becoming apart of the flying opera company, her Airbending became weaker and need fans but for those who survived the genocide and went to hiding and didn't fall for traps and went around and more kids that could have been born the more likely to just being non Airbender decendant was more likely until Airbender was fully gone and those who lived or were born in Korras Era after hormanic convergence and bring that balance back into the world that was missing from airbenders and the ability to airbend came back
Tylee is awsome but i think she would struggel to win from zaheer 1 on 1 even with airbending. She would be 80+ years old and nowhere near as agile and fast as she was in ATLA.
I head canon is that she she trained chi blockers that later on actually turned rogue, and through the 80 year gap found armon and trained his group as well as him
It's sad that Legend of Korra only focused on Team Avatar.
I think this theroy can hold up. But one crucial detail youre overlooking. If ty lee was an air nomad / acolyte she probably never knew that she was. Her parents/grandparents would have been traveling around or escaped somehow and thought to themselves "what better place to hide than behind enemy lines?" And would have sworn to keep their true identity a secret. Its happened before. The gaang did it, so did zuko and iroh.
The first time I saw Ty Lee with Kyoshi warriors I PANICKED IN ANGER AND STARTED TO PANTING but when I discovered that she changed I reliefed when Ty Lee said: We'll be best friends :3 I saw that she mantained that cute grip TvT
Another thing is Aang's granddaughter jinora is very similar looking to ty lee shich could make sense if ty lee is also a descendant of airbenders like jinora is
If Ty Lee was alive during book2-4 seasons, she would be old as katara, whom I believe are around the same age

Doesn't she have like 6 or 7 identical siblings? None of them show up. To our knowledge, none of their offspring show up. But I'll say, it's still likely. Airbenders are nomadic and could appear in literally any other nation.
I ponder if Ty Lee's "airbending" was a varient. Meelo fart bends. maybe Ty Lee's speed, agility and acrobatic insanity is how she airbends. Simply she doesn't know she does it. She does move VERY differently to Mai and Azula when they do their air based attacks. Ty lee always seems to almost float. Empty, and become wind. Perhaps she is on that path somehow. Thus wouldn't KNOW with the return of airbenders.

I think that one thing people forget when trying to make this theory work is that Ty Lee was raised in a circus, so acrobatics, and dodging things come naturally to her. further more I watched all her fight scenes and compared them with every Airbender fight I could find. they look similar but for one thing: Airbenders jump from their feet and land on their feet. Ty Lee lands in fancy posies and performs handsprings, plus she's seen swinging from everything she can reach like a monkey. not even Aang does that against Jet or Azula in a wooded area.
Ty Lee may be of Air Nomad decent, but there's no way she could be confused with an Airbender, otherwise she would have been killed long before she could have become friend with Azula.
I agree, I always personally thought it sounded off on the idea of Ty Lee being an airbender. The way I see it, if she was, she would've likely demonstrated some airbending abilities to some extent, and probably would've even defected to Aang's side (even if it meant betraying Azula) to learn more about the air nomad culture and improve her own airbending abilities.
But that's just the thing, and the biggest problem I have with this theory: Ty Lee was always explicitly a non-bender in the series, thus it makes sense why she ultimately joined the Kyoshi Warriors at the end of the series. Because she was never shown to have any bending abilities, it makes sense that she would fit in better with a group of non-bending warriors; and as i said already, I think she would've had more interest in joining Aang and his group if she actually had any airbending capabilities to begin with. I also don't know how much I believe that she could be a descendant of air nomads, either, as it's entirely possible that there are other cultures besides the air nation that have knowledge on chi blocking, and even if it's not a commonly practiced style, I can see why the fire nation would want to teach non-benders how to use this technique to give them a leg up in combat
I like to think that it is possible Ty lee is an airbender but she just never finds out.

Were all air nomads airbenders? Or were there nonbenders like in the other nation? I'm not sure how much I agree with the notion that her being of air nomad descent isn't or can't be true. Asami is of Fire Nation/Earth Kingdom descent and she doesn't have any bending abilities. I'm pretty sure Bryan and Mike also confirmed that bending ability isn't genetic. Idk how they decided that one becomes a bender and one doesn't. I'm also not sure how the theory of harmonic convergence and Ty Lee...it could be an inconsistency, but idk. I do think it makes sense that she would be dead in Korra's time though. Zuko, Katara and Toph are ancient lmao.
I can easily agree with the theory of Ty Lee being an Airbender. I mean... she was just 14 years old in the original series so if she waited 14 more years into her adult life at the time Republic City was formed, that would make her a 28 year old Airbender and pretty young enough almost into her 30s not only hiding but wanting to live long enough at the time of Avatar Korra where she would see Tenzin and his family and Ty Lee would also fight against Zaheer by chi-blocking him so that he wouldn't cause any harm to Tenzin or his family. I still believe that Ty Lee would be an Airbender and fighting alongside Korra would make her a great Airbender and Ty Lee would also get along with Tenzin's kids and would even look after Rohan because Ty Lee's personality and humor clearly makes sense with Airbenders.
I still think there's a chance Ty Lee could have been alive, and could actually have gotten airbending, but simply could not do as much with it. Looking back at ATLA, Ty Lee is pretty much the same age as the group and so she would've been very much old in TLOK. Sure we see characters like Zuko and Toph still kind of moving around and bending combatively, but we also see that Katara is not. So, I think another option would just be that Ty Lee is much older and therefore is just not moving around much. She could be alive on Kyoshi Island but simply too old to do much, even if she had gotten airbending, electing to just live out her remaining days there.

I really wonde why we barely saw the fire nation in avatar korra we only saw when korra was healed. It would have been great to see how much the fire nation capital had advanced
I think that Ty Lee is a descendent of the airbenders, there just to many similarities for me to think otherwise. With that being said, I think that she is dead in LoK. As unfortunate as that is, we know that Sokka is also dead (and Aang but he died under special circumstances) so it wouldn't be too much of stretch to believe that Ty Lee was dead by the time of LoK as well. The only problem with this theory is that she was the embodiment of healthiness. She was fit and active and at least in the real world those things typically will extend your lifetime. The reason why this is a problem is that Katara and Zuko are both still alive. Yes, they may both be old, but they can still bend and fight very well. Zuko couldn't hold his own very well against the Red Lotus, sure, but Kaya states that Katara is the only person who can help Jinora when she gets trapped in the spirit realm, thus leading us to infer that Katara is still an incredibly strong waterbenber. In addition, if she was a descendent of airbenders, I would think that would extend her live even more. They are shown to be able to control their boy temperature simply by breathing a certain way so I would think they would have some other tricks up their sleeves. They are quite spiritual and many of them lived for quite a long time, longer than most other benders (except those that used the earthbending technique to extend their lives such as Kyoshi). All that would lead me to believe that she would outlive Katara, Zuko, and most people from the main "cast" of Atla. I suppose you could say that she caught a disease or something but I think that if the theory that she is a descendent of airbenders was true, I think it it would be best to see her go out fighting. Ty Lee is one of my favorite characters from Atla and I think that if her and Sokka both had similar "death storylines", as in they both went out in the same fight or in a war or something it would be a good way to complete both of their characters stories.

@AntoineBandele U made a video about a year ago called "Fans prefer Korra over Airbender" and in that video, u looked at results from a survey conducted at the end of the legend of korra. The results of the survey showed that fans generally like Korea over Airbender. I think it would be good content if u made another survey and checked to see if the answers have changed.

Well,Korra was preoccupied with searching for Airbenders in the Earth Kingdom. She never went to the Fire Nation to search. But even then, maybe she already passed by then.
Personally, I don't think Ty Lee would become an Airbender even with Harmonic Convergence. While it is speculative that the New Airbenders have Airbender lineage; I don't think we actually saw anyone else who had Ty Lee's traits (other than her sisters). Even if Ty Lee died her sisters would likely be alive (or at least one of them). If the theory is true; one of her sisters would be an Airbender (as well as any other potential living sisters as they are all identical). Then they would have shown up. But they didn't.
It's possible that Ty Lee has very distant Air Nomad lineage but only took on the physical traits but not the Airbending even if she was alive during Harmonic Convergence.
With that out of the way; I do like to think that Ty Lee stayed in the Fire nation as Fire Lord Zuko's body guard and started (or is apart of) a Fire Nation Branch of Kyoshi Warriors.
This theory of "Ly Lee MUST have gotten Airbending" is only hold together when you also know of the fan theory that only airbender descendants got airbending during harmonic convergence. (You dind't mention it in the video but it still is inherit to your theory).
But that is just that. a FAN THEORY and nothing more. There's nothing to indicate that the people who got to airbend weren't just chosen randomly.
And furthermore "Ty Lee is an airbender descendant" is ALSO just a fan theory that doesn't have to be true.
That being said it is still highly likely that TyLee is dead during the time of Korra, simply because she would have been over 80 at that point and old people tend to die. So let's not overcomplicate things.
I think there is a hole in the return of airbenders. They would not be the only recent descendants in the Earth Kingdom. There would be some in other nations. And that should be addressed.
And besides, for a balance, benders of other elements should also arise. Like the barbarians in the Northern Water Tribe. And are notoriously inspired by the Fire Nation. And there could have been firebenders there.
She could have also just been super old and not even be a Kiyoshi warrior at that time

Ty Lee is a descendant of the Airbenders and she probably has been in hiding in the fire nation became friends with Azula and Mai well technically that would be impossible for Ty Lee to be Airbender but a descendant instead that explains why she has nomadic roots and has been able to have chi blocking. The reason for her nomadic roots because she traveled a lot like other Airbenders did in their life time. So it is possible that the circus has traveled a lot because they are Air nomads
I highly doubt that. For one; he Show is called Avatar: The LAST Airbender. Meaning Ty Lee can't be an Airbender. Secondly, she has about 6-7 sisters. They are identical. While not all of them would be Airbenders if Ty Lee is; there would likely be more than just Ty Lee. Which goes back to problem one.

The one Major flaw with the Legend of Korra series, no reference to ,or appearance of Ty Lee. She would have been around Zuko’s age if she alive, yet we are strangely left in the dark about whether or not Ty Lee is among the living or the spirits at this point in time.
As well Suki and Mai....
Here's a big what if that should be considered. She probably retired, had a child or two, and whoever she's a mother to gets the air bending. For all we know, one of the first people to arrive could've been her children or perhaps grand children.
Nothing is confirmed, but at the same time this can also be a possibility.
Same situation. If her child was an Airbender we would have seen Ty Lee just like we saw the other airbender parents and families.

Idk...Ty Lee showing up wouldn’t make sense in the earth kingdom. Korra never visited the fire nation in search of airbenders. Just because she didn’t show doesn't mean she's dead.
She was probably on Ember Island with Azula and Mai doing old lady things at Lo and Li's beach house 🥰 would've been interesting to see.

Here me out, back in ancient days lion turtles gave peaple bending, then its taken back. What if there still a lion turtle that could give a (for example) water bender the power to fire bend. Just like how a lion turtle gave aang energy bending.
I certainly dont believe in the theory. Though I do consider it possible she shares some genetics.
I will also point out, she dhave been very old regardless of being an airbender or not, and she may be too old to travel. We dont really know her context (if shes alive) because she doesnt appear.

If Ty Lee was an Airbender her Sister would likely be too (if any are alive). Someone in the family would have made it to the Air Temples in the 3 years between Season 3 and 4. Either they are all dead or non of them became Airbenders.

Hi I think a good video idea would be hamma vrs iroh, I hear a lot of controversy (in my humble opinion I think hamma would win, without blood bending) I think she was holding back on Katara just to teach Katara blood bending and test her skillls on water bending. I actually think hamma probably had more deathly skills possibly what avater kysoui did with freezing hearts, remember she was the last water bender to get caught. Also I think she would actually want to hurt iroh since he’s a firebender. I think she knew what she was doing with Katara by controlling people she care about, annag and sokka and probably saw that Katara water bending is stronger with her emotions. And to come up with creative ways to bend water from plants and get water from the air… I mean me personally I think she excepted when she was caught agin and taught and met Amon dad blood bending

If she was alive then she was probably too old, and Ty Lee is not weak, if she got airbending then she's very capable and could've been self-taught like Zaheer, she wouldn't need a teacher. Also, she could've taught her children Chi-blocking, Kyoshi combat and Airbending just like Yakone did. She and her children could easily be elite airbenders without needing tattoos just like Zaheer or different tattoos like Kyoshi's mom.
She would’ve been old if she was still alive and Harmonic Convergence wouldn’t have necessarily given her the ability. There were many Chi-Blockers in the events of Korra and none of them showed up with Tenzin (unbeknownst to us). I’m a believer there were still air nomads during the 100 year war, roughed or not, but Aang was the last Airbender.
It isn't farfetched that Ty Lee is dead considering how old Katara was in Korra. Even if she gained airbending, just like Toph, she'd be too old to fight.

Still not gonna stop viewing Ty Lee as an Airnomad descendant.
Wouldn't she had been really old by the time harmonic convergence? I doubt she would've been too excited about putting her elderly bosy through a new training regiment being as old as toph/zuko/katara
If ty lee was alive just like toph Katara and Zuko she's in her 70's . She could easily just be minding her business
I like to think Ty Lee died along with Zuko trying to protect Suki. Then again,Katara and Zuko might just have a longer natural lifespan.

She was as old as the original team avatar members and so much could have happened since we last saw her. Like that one farmer dude that got the air bending ability and refused to leave cause he had a family and a life he's not willing to give up

But isnt like all the og characters like really old in legend of korra? So its most likley shes dead wouldnt even be a consideration for her to be alive
if she was still alive she would have like 80 or 90 years old if she was still alive during the legend of korra

She would've been so old by then anyway, it's likely she did gain air bending but decided to not do anything significant with it. At least not enough to get on team avatars radar. Similar to how toph didn't originally want to get involved either, or how katara stayed out of the fights altogether
That makes sense for an introvert like Toph. But Ty Lee is a people person who would likely never isolate herself in such a manner.
@@AntoineBandele I'm not talking about extreme isolation like toph, although she did literally commit to being a kyoshi warrior, who may well have isolated themselves as you said in the video anyway. I'm just saying she'd be really old and may just want to stay out of the fight, like katara did even though she was in the story and could've gotten involved if she really wanted

@@AntoineBandele just that we know there are 4 countries in the whole world. Between Atla and Lok we got a new country and in Book 2 finale Southern water tribe got independence, so that's 6.
I mean, the Island is governed by their leader and they are not limited to Earth Kingdom's authority maybe, but I don't think it's a brand new country
I knew something was up as soon as I saw Ty Lee. Even 10 year old me was like ".... why are her eyes the same color as air benders?" A lot of the gang had passed away by the time LOK came out so it wouldn't surprise me at all if she had also passed.
I never believed in this theory. From how it sounds it seems more like they are related. When she was learning how to fight she must've developed her own style while she trained with the others.
I doubt Tenzin would take her to Air Temple Island. By the time she gotten her air bending ability she would be too old to fight and train. I'm pretty sure she's dead, if she isn't she could be doing what Katara and Toph are doing which is living the rest of her life in peace away from the problems that plague the world.

Honestly the only other thing I could think is that while a descendant and does carry the spiritual aspects or something similar to airbending I think she just doesn’t carry the chi that allows her to airbend whether because it just wasn’t passed down or because it just simply didn’t reach her through harmonic convergence. This might be a long shot but I think it would be similar to tenzins case of his struggle with spirits, while he’s a descendant of the airbenders and not only can airbend but mastered it, he had trouble with the spiritual side to airbending, but unlike Korra who was more of the physical fighter type than the spiritual type, tenzins case was more of identity, instead of forming into his own person, he was trying to be like what his father wants. Though who knows I could be wrong on all that.
"If other people got airbending, Ty Lee would definitely get airbending if she was a descendant of them" doesn't make much sense to me. Airbending went to random people, it didn't choose anyone, did it?
Ty Lee isn’t the only person with gray eyes brown hair or round facial features Master Piandao had gray eyes Teo had gray eyes and round facial features and Suki had brown hair but who knows
