Monk Gyatso's FORBIDDEN Airbending Technique Used to Kill the Firebenders

  • During Aang’s heartbreaking trip back to the Southern Air Temple early in the series, he comes across the skeleton of his former Mentor, Monk Gyatso. This leads Aang into a furious rage, sending him into the Avatar state… But how did Monk Gyatso kill all of these Firebenders in such a tight space… Well, there’s a crazy theory that explains that, and might make you look at Monk Gyatso in a totally different light… He may have used a highly forbidden and secretive technique known only to absolute Masters of the Airbending art….
    #avatarthelastairbender #avatarthelastairbender #forbiddenbending
OK, So this theory has been going around for years, but I believe Monk Gyatso used a similar technique to Zaheer from Legend of Korra to suck all of the air out of the room, and take out all of the Fire Nation soldiers, but tragically also himself. An all or nothing move. as the troops surrounded him, he made peace with his decision and quietly sat down, knowing what he was about to do… So here’s why:
first of all, his clothing is completely unburned. they aren’t scorched or charred in any way, which is ridiculous when there are dozens of bodies piled up around him. It’s simply not possible for them to have fought him without fire…
That leads on to the next point… All of the bodies of the fire nation soldiers are piled up around Monk Gyatso… If he used airbending to kill them all in the traditional way, their bodies would have been thrown all around the room, and certainly not all piled together right next to him.
Next is that we know this type of bending is certainly possible from Zaheer and the Earth Queen in the legend of korra. In that show he was able to suck the air directly out of the earth queens lungs, leading her to suffocate horribly. Now Zaheer was certainly a very skilled and powerful bender, by I’d argue Monk Gyatso was probably even stronger and certainly much more experience. This would allow him to control much larger volumes of air in the fine-grained and precise way needed to suck air out of longs, or completely clear a room of oxygen….
And because of his huge experience and extreme mastery of Airbendening, Gyatso probably discovered this technique deep in written air nomad history, combining it with his own skills and knowldge. He certainly never woud have taught Aang such a dark technique firstly because of how dark and malicious it was, but also simply because it wasn’t ready. This explains pretty perfectly why it was never mentioned in the show and why Aang didn’t know that’s what happened. He would have no idea that something like that could even be achieved with airbending.
As for how the exact events went down… well here’s how I think it happened. As the firebenders approached the top of the mountain, having already killed hundreds of Air Nomads on the way up, they were probably feeling invincible. Completely embolded by their previous success and the immense power of the comet, they probably marched straight into the room with Gyatso and glanced upon a frail old monk… They thought they had an extremely easy kill lined up and basically played with their food, taunting and teasing the old man… But then, out of nowhere, Gyatso launches both arms out from his center, and piercing gust of air rings through the room, before total and complete silence. Now there was no air. The soldiers fall into a deep panic, and they all immediately launch their bolts of fire at him, but to no avail… their bending no longer works because without air, there cannot be fire… On top of this, just like Iroh says, Firebending comes from the breath. Without breath, they cannot generate fire… Gyatso has shown these firebenders the importance of balance and that all elements rely on eachother, whether they realize it or not…
Gyatso then holds his technique until all of the fire benders around him drop to the ground… then he too falls, bringing an end to the air nomads… at least until the boy in the iceberg returns..

I think this forbidden Airbending technique would be the equivalent of bloodbending for Waterbenders, a move so dark that it becomes unthinkable and known only to the most seasoned Airbending masters. I also think that this lends to the theory that this contributes to the Air Nomad's pacifism because under different circumstances they would be a force to be reckoned with.

Aang's issue wasn't him being a pansy or whatever. It was asking what kind of precedent he was to set as Avatar. Would he continue the hundred-year tradition of violence and death, or would he seek to show a better way?

I personally don't think it was forbidden, just the idea of taking life was forbidden to the monks so much so that they wouldn't even contemplate doing such a horrendous thing. The reason why Zaheer thought of it was because he didn't grow up an air nomad monk so not taking a life was not indoctrinated into him from a young age. I think if the air nomads weren't taught to have this passive attitude from the start they would probably be the most dangerous benders out of them all.

It's likely that he had been fighting against the Fire-benders and while he was holding his own, his fellow Air Nomads were being worn away in a fierce, bloody massacre. By the time he retreated to that chamber he was worn-out while the Fire-benders were still going strong.

I can imagine that the reason this technique would be forbidden is strictly because suffocation is one of the most horrifying ways to die. No matter how disciplined you are, your brain will go into a panicked frenzy.
You cannot block this attack. You cannot dodge it, and it is ultimately unavoidable. A skilled enough attacker might not even need to maintain line of sight to you you do this, and furthermore, you will do whatever it takes (whether you want to or not) to get them to stop. This technique is torture, pure and simple. So much more cruel than burning, or crushing, or smothering, and always more available than drowning.

there is a push and pull. in order for him to take oxygen out of a room, he has to put it somewhere.
when zaheer killed the queen, he took oxygen from her lungs, and forced a pure oxygen barometric chamber around her head and face.
If Gyatzo is pulling breath out of the fire soldiers, he's putting it on himself, and died of oxygen poisoning through the concentration of it.

The part I can't agree with is that the technique costs something from the bender. Zaheer performed this technique without it exacting a cost. Why would he be different? Bending isn't something sentient, so it's not as if it could pick and choose which benders to make pay certain costs for certain techniques.
My other issue is motive. Why would Gyatso perform this technique in the first place? As a monk, and not the Avatar, maintaining his spirituality at all times would be paramount. Part of being a monk is believing that all life is sacred, even the life of one's enemy. With that in mind, why would Gyatso willingly cause such a major breach in his ideals? It's been seen with monks that they would even die themselves before taking the life of another.
It's an interesting idea for sure, but it has some definite holes.

Maybe the secret technique is putting a room into vacuum of no air. But I suspect it's a newly created technique where Gyatso just casually pulled off. He focused it to all space of the room instead of space surrounding him making him affected of his own technique.

  • @nikgokuhil

I recall hearing that the first form of media who are the Avatar franchise that mentions this forbidden technique apparently comes from the card game. The card game apparently made up new characters that were at the time consider Cannon but I think since been debunked. These characters were a female Airbender who escaped the initial Siege and lived in the Fire Nation at the thief. The other one was a monk who portrayed other Airbenders to the Fire Nation.

in the case of gyatso's battle, it would be fair to assume that the fire nation soldiers were not in peak physical condition after all the mountain traversing and breathing thinner mountain air, turning the room into a vacuum quickly can indeed make them all lose consciousness within seconds

It would also make sense to me that Yangchen despite being an air nomad from birth may have changed her spirituality from that of a pure air bender since she was the avatar and both had a duty to the world and would not have had to rely entirely on the spirituality of pure airbending. She had the time to master the elements and grow up as a normal avatar.
But at the same time the fact that aang stuck to his roots even after all the traumatic stuff that happened to him and the circumstances of his mastery of being the avatar speaks volumes for his spirituality.
Everyone is different even the air nomads would have had individuals like yangchen who don't adhere as strictly to the rules or would bend them where necessary or when following the rules would have been quixotic and absurd.

There is one detail about Monk Gyatso's skeletal remains, does anyone else notice he had hair on the back of his head, every other time we see Gyatso he's bald, could it be he used the technique on the fire benders and being the last standing air nomad he spent the remainder of his life there feeling shameful for using a forbidden technique and knowing Aang was gone possibly dead

  • @jaym291

There's actually mention of an airbending technique used by Avatar Yangchen to airbend all the oxygen out of a room to either knock out or kill one's opponent, it's mentioned in "The Dawn of Yangchen."

I like think Gyatso probably knew the full details of the technique, including creating an air bubble around his head so he didn't suffocate himself. But he chose not to. The Fire Nation was killing everyone, the Air Temple was surrounded, he was probably one of the few remaining nomads up until that moment. He probably chose to die as he knew escape was futile, but decided to take as many Fire Nation soldiers with him as he could.

Air bending is incredibly powerful where you can use it to increase the blows of your fist and resistance against blows, even elemental skilled air breathing, build up your internal organs, bone marrow skin and all and Hidden up your reflexes doing strikes you can share those someone’s insides you can share their bones with air and there’s an incredible amount of things that you can do with it. You can even heat up molecules we can burst air as you grieve and touch someone with a bunch of blow. You can remove ear of a space and guide people towards you there’s and infinite amount things you can do with air bending.

I’m of the opinion that, over the thousands of years that air bending had to developed, it ended up being confidently the strongest element. All that innovation and refinement was lost when Sozin used the comet to wipe out the biggest threat to the idea that fire was the superior element: the Air Benders. He needed the comet’s power to win.

  • @AlphaNanite

Could be that the technique was like a high stakes Chicken game. Like he is unable to breathe so long as the technique is activated. Here is the series of events I imagine playing out.
Fire Benders confront him, Gyatso uses the technique, no one can breathe, Fire Benders drop, Gyatso barely hangs on to consciousness to finish the job, Fire Benders die, Gyatso faints but is still alive, the technique comes undone and the air is released, a loud bang from the air is heard from said release, troops outside attack when they hear it, the burst of air by the technique is strong enough to repel the dirt around Gyatso but not the soldiers, this leaves him alone in a "clean" circle, they find their men dead and Gyatso unconscious, they finish the job and slice Gyatso's throat, necklace gets cut in the act and falls as Gyatso's lifeless slumps to the wall, the end.

Of the 4 elements, I THOROUGHLY believe air is the most dangerous. And by a wide margin, too.
It's the only element that's essentially everywhere that's below orbit. So imagine an immensely powerful and skilled user of the air element up against someone that may not have enough of their element around, or if it's extremely cold for a firebender. Etc.

In the Kiyoshi novel, she yeeted a bunch of people and things around a narrow passage way with air bending cuz of the confine space. It could be that too.
"The dirty secret of airbending Kyoshi had learned through experience was that it was absolutely devastating in close quarters. Surrounded by hard objects, the gentle art of monks and nuns turned utterly brutal. She sent wind back and forth with rapid changes of direction. The guards were taken by their midsections, flung into spine-rattling collisions with the walls and ceilings. They collapsed into armored heaps."

That's possible too. And I'm willing to bet that what Gyatso did as he would probably find the suffocation technique too inhumane though it could be that he had to unfortunately come to the decision that it was kill or be killed and that he had to detach himself from his belief. My theory was that he wanted the fire benders to suffer as little as possible and that he used either an enormous blade of air to slit their throats or dropped the firebenders from a a great height killing them instantly.

  • @calebbridges4748

I always imagined it as a shock of air. They could move away or struggle in a vacuum. Just STAB him he's in a vacuum with no weapon, and more importantly no access to a weapon.
He EXPLODED them. Not with the kinda force that would fling a body. But with the kind of sudden air pressure force that would simply crush lungs and liquefy organs. That's been my take for a while now. The sudden crack/sound/pressure killed everyone in there instantly.

  • @poemirtiza

Bended all the air out of the room and the natural vacuum made it so the door couldnt be opened due to the sheer pressure. Causing the Firebenders + Gyatso himself to suffocate.
Taking air out of each one of those firebenders' lungs like Zaheer would require a lot of time and give the firebenders the opportunity to attack Gyatso
