Am I the only one who actually wanted a peaceful game for a long time? I get so tired of the fact that in almost any game there's something that wants to kill you, or at least set you back. Even some adventure games do that, but sometimes you just want to relax - explore, do stuff and know that nothing here's gonna hurt you, you're safe, you can do whatever you want without fear. I dunno, it's just something that I'm longing to experience.
I was looking for all that too. Sometimes the combat in these types of games can get repetitive very quickly and become a chore more than being fun/exciting. It's the lack of puzzles, even basic ones, that's putting me off this one so far, but we'll see.
I totally get that, and same. Heck, when I used to play Minecraft I never took it off peaceful. But I guess with this game there might just be a lack of reason to feel invested. A beautiful, extensive world is one thing, but good world design has multiple facets to it and unfortunately it seems like the balance was just off here - like things are missing. I don't know of course, I haven't played it yet and I hope to be proven wrong, but I'd want a game like this to get me invested and it so far seems like it would struggle to do so.
I’ve been debating on getting this game for months now. I’m super indecisive when it comes to games because I often worry that I’ll expect something that’s different from what the game may bring. I got this game a few days ago and it’s the best game I’ve played in a while. With the currently popular games on the market being shooters, gore, etc. (Nothing wrong w those they’re fun as well) this game is a nice break from that. There’s surprisingly so much to do and it’s incredibly lovely to look at. I play for hours on end every day. I NEVER comment on posts but for this game I felt that I had to let people know that it’s worth every penny!
I got this game Thursday and found that I've been unable to stop playing! This game definitely isn't for everyone, but I found the lack of combat charming. This is a game that I would turn to if I was stressed out and needed to escape for a little while. If I wanted to play something with combat and an open world, like WOW or Legend of Zelda, then I know where to turn, but this game isn't supposed to be like those titles. It's its own, separate thing from them, that is relaxing and combat free. I agree that, sometimes, the characters are unattractive, but not always. For me, this has definitely become one of my favorite games.
A lot of ppl love this game for the relaxed feel to it. Its nice to play to just unwind. Sometimes rpg and combat games seem so simular to each other. They're running out of ideas and originality anymore.
to be fair this game has probably been in development for at least a year, so the fact the intro is similar to zeldas is no more than a coincidence. Its clear they've taken a lot of inspiration from of the legend of zelda franchise though.
So what do you actually do in Yonder? You say there is crafting and fishing but what's the point of the game, what will we end up doing 90% of the time and why?
My all time favorite game is Bloodborne and the Souls series. I spend all my time between those games and Destiny. Occasionally I need a game that doesn't require thinking, is relaxing and beautiful. This hit the mark. It's mindless and I'm okay with that. Fwiw I paid $15 by preordering it from the Play store. I think $15 is the right price for this game. PS: I also agree with the review, but is a buy for my situation.
Having played through a chunk of this game... Agreed. I was always really into games like harvest moon and animal crossing so I thought this would be similar. It was cheap and looked nice so I bought it. At first I loved the game but the more I played it the more empty it felt. Even without a story, animal crossing manages to be more engaging and worthwhile. Because yonder has a story you expect more from it. But the farms were useless after placing, the npcs were bland, the story has me waiting in game days to progress (ie I'll make this story important item for you but it'll take 3 days so go do something else), and I find myself with nothing to do. I can't even craft and sell things to hoard money because the game's economy is trade based. This makes much of the crafting useless. Story and achievements aside, there few other goals to work towards. And while the world is beautiful it can be very hard to maneuver. There's one cat I found that I couldnt reach no matter how I jumped. Looked up a walkthrough. It said to jump the rocks like I had been doing. I finally got it after trying for a whole hour.
I bought the game before this review, the review sums it up very well from what I've played (30 mins). it's not usually the sort of game I'm into, you couldn't pay me to play Minecraft (but I think that's the art style putting me off) but it seems fun. I paid £15.19 on psn with 20% off for preordering. I think for that price it's decent. I reckon for a sequel or maybe even an expansion adding combat would make it more engaging but as it is it's a fun game and I smiled playing it and I'm looking forward to getting stuck back in. what more can you ask for. good and fair review though
Great review as always. As someone that has never played, and can't play Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, I was looking forward to this. The lack of combat didn't bother me but I was hoping for some kind of puzzles at various points and the lack of them has made me rethink getting this. I might watch a partial playthrough first.
+Steven Hatton Yeah, BOTW does look great and it's the first Zelda I've had any interest in, mainly for the open world exploration side. I just have zero interest in a handheld or a Wii U. If only they'd relax and push their games to other systems more than they do. I've been tempted to go the emulator route but haven't done anything about it yet.
Greetings from Norway, Karak, thanks for the concise and honest reviews! Been watching you for a while now, and after losing faith completely in mainstream reviewers, you've become my go-to guy for games reviews. At first I was amazed at the speed of your commentary, and it took me aback, but I've grown accustomed to it, your voice is great with good diction, and despite the speed of narration, easy to follow. I was curious about Yonder, but it looked a little twee and flat, your review confirmed some suspicions - thanks. What about doing a review of the new PC title "Cold Waters", curious about that, feeling ready for an 80's submarine dip!
That's two reviews in a very short amount of time. I must say that I am very impressed. Well, truth be told, I've been impressed by your work for quiet some time. You have definitely set the bar as far as quality videos are concerned. I'm sure glad that I subscribed to your channel when I did, because I don't regret a single moment of it. As far as Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles is concerned, its basically Legend of Zelda Wind Waker without the combat and without Link. It feels very similar to Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon which is a good thing since I'm a big fan of those 2 games anyway. As much as I love some good combat and action in video games, its nice to play a video game where I can just sit back and relax and Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles fits the bill in that regard. The game is very colorful which I appreciate. Environmental sounds, sound effects and music are pretty good. Its a shame that the controls are a bit of a nuisance though. The inclusion of puzzles and combat would've been nice as well. There is no story to speak of. On top of that, the game lasts only 6 or 7 hours. By the way, developer Prideful Sloth, has some team members who used to work on the Batman Arkham series, so suffice to say, my hopes were pretty high. I could see myself buying this game after a bit of a discount, but for $20 that's a bit much for what I'd be getting in return. That aside, thanks Karak for another awesome video!
Hey Karak awesome review! I decided to pick this up for $16 with the discount on PS Plus right now. I wasn't aware of this game so thank you for reviewing it. I hope the Devs support this game as I feel they can definitely build in more content and systems to make the game more robust.
I was assuming this game would be a simple play-through when I bought it but I'm finding that the more I play, the more there are things that surprise me. Lots of detail went into the game and there are some easter eggs to be found as well, plus it's definitely a challenge to find things without looking for answers online if you're motivated to see the game to total completion. Obvs not for everyone but it's definitely not a horrible game, and it's really not a terrible LoZ knockoff ( otherwise every cartoony, open-world adventure game has to be a LoZ knockoff, get real.)
Any games you recommend that are like Younder in a sense but more to your liking? Dragon Builders is one that I fond of - unsure if that's one you like - however it does have monsters in it. I'm looking for something in the middle - just not Zelda as I don't own a switch yet and only have pc, ps4, ps3, xb1; Vita and New 3DS
I scanned over the comments, but couldn't find an answer to this: Towards the end, you said you like games like this. I've not been much of a gamer for years, but do like exploration, collecting and crafting (when meaningful), virtual reality type games. So what games "like this" would you recommend instead of this?
I really appreciated this video, I was thinking about getting it simply because of my love for stardew valley but now I can see that there isn't enough to hold my attention
I love how you throw in mature jokes into your reviews. "Grunts from a brazzers couch," that phrase fucking killed me, and the opening with the Big Johns Girdles lol. I watch all your reviews just for your sense of humor at this point. Awesome video
Great Job on the video! I was really looking forward to this, unfortunately if there is no "hook" in the gameplay, it usually gets boring quite fast for me.
Darn, I was hoping Yonder was going to be really good. Though I think I will buy it when it is on sale. Well I guess this *is* why I watch your review of a game before buying it. You give me the info I need to decide if it is worth it for me. Thanks for another great review!
lack of voice acting, the world is too big it feel empty, there is no challege (except if you consider collecting sprite as challenge), the story is lacking, the crafting and farming are lacking as well. The good point is the sprite are cute, the world is beautiful, the light in object is great, the animal are cute (my favorite is buffalo like animal)
Got it for $15.99 from PSN, which I think was an ok price. Looking for something like a Harvest Moon, just relaxing, farm simulation. Would this do the trick, you think?
There is a farming element but it isn't as strong as HM, Yonder is more fetch-questing/crafting over farming but it's still a relaxing game with lots to explore.
Sometimes games like these suit those who don't want stress and just beautiful exploration. Thankfully games like this deserve to exist and it's known as the "relaxed" genre of games. the Journey games are like this as well. It's immersive relaxation, and an alternative to VR.
I think ppl need to realize...including the guy that made this video but they do want kids to play this game too and kids love easy games and parent love easy games that kids dnt have to ask for help with. I think the guy who made this video totally forgot that not every game is meant for an adult at some time its almost comical that he doesn't get that. In my opinion this is a great game for kids!
Every reviewer can only review from their own perspective. If you get an adult reviewing the game they're going to review it as an adult. And that is quite useful, to other adults who were thinking about playing it regardless of who the target of the game may be. Of course children may have a different perspective but assuming what they would think would just be guessing and assumption if you're not actually part of that group. This is why having reviewers from a variety of different backgrounds is helpful.
Yeah, I do agree with that. The gameplay mechanics are not quite deep enough when you play as an adult, which leads the game to be a bit repetitive and boring when you're used to more complex systems; but I think that's a perfect introduction to RPGs / crafting games for kids. It's still a well-made, pretty game: it's not because they're kids that they don't deserve quality, but the gameplay is bare enough to be understood by a beginner - and presented simply too.
Sometimes, as long-time gamers, we tend to forget that many traits of video games (whether it be gameplay concepts, control mechanics, the quest-reward-progression system...) really are not that obvious to someone who has never played. We've acquired reflexes of thought and understanding of theses traits over time, and as many people start playing as kids, we don't remember stumbling over all that; but those are things that need to be learnt! Who has never backed up from a game because the tutorial was several hours long, and you were discouraged from that learning phase (yeah, looking at you Europa Universalis)? I have the feeling that Yonder would be great at teaching some core mechanics, in a very accessible wrapping. It's not that games for kids *have* to be easy, but rather that someone new to video games needs to access it by steps. I mean, that does nothing for the story, that could have gone more in depth anyway, but, that's still something to consider in defense of Yonder's gameplay.
thanks for that review. It is a bummer though, that it turned out the way it did. It just looks so beautful. will you make a review on Hellblade: Sensua's Sacrifice?
I absolutely agree with you 100%! the game is beautiful so good looking but i too believe some kind of combat is a must in this kind of games or some kind of opposing force, look at what happen to No Man's Sky! that game had potential but at the end of the day people don't want to just walk around all day long... i don't know i might be wrong but i truly feel this game would have been amazing if it had some kind of combat in it :( so sad! ... Amazing review as always!
Wow, great review and impressive content in general, congratulation sir, you are doing an incredible job :) Quick question: would you consider doing a Q&A?
I really don't see the point of and open world / sandbox type games without dangers or enemies. Since the game don't offer that, I guess the creator of the game, directed the game to an specific gamer type, my guess, the type that like puzzle games or very abstract games that offer a sense of solving something but in a very calm way.
i have this game, but like i'd say that quests and story needs to be fleshed out a lot more. i like the lack of fighting and stakes, but it does become a bit of a collectathon after a while, and for some people that can be tedious, it was a really good calm game. i dont think if your someone that loves action and a deep story you'll like it particularly, but if you want a gentle game, this is really nice
man, I really love this kind of world design and styled graphic... sadly it seems doesn't have enough gameplay. Really wish it has basic combat and some kind of harvestmoon/runefactory type of gameplay, and this would be my dream game. And thanks for the review man!
I'm all for atmospheric and relaxing games that can make me wind down after a stressful day, without frequent deaths and frustrations, but the complete absence of any kind of fighting system does make this game look pretty... boring. Thanks for the excellent review! I may pick it up on some deep sale.
It's the lack of even basic puzzles that's putting me off. I can live without the combat but without it the game needs something to replace it and basic puzzles would be the obvious choice.
MrKanjidude I enjoyed it for about 2 hours then started to find it incredibly dull. The lack of any sort of combat soon becomes a big issue. But as the other person says it's the lack of puzzles that is the worst part. I've not gone back to it and I'm struggling for a game to play until uncharted comes out and still haven't felt a need to return to it
+Russ Mawson If you are looking for a game to play hows about giving Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. I thought I'd hate it but it's surprisingly good.
Do you recommend this as one of the best "chill games" of the year? This is one of the games that seem perfect for relieving stress from a hard day's work lol
Fucking hell karak took a Big sip of my soda when i started the video up and nearly spot the whole thing out again covering my kitchen hehe Best opening yet 😀
Thanks - I had preordered the physical PS4 edition from Gamestop based on how gorgeous it looked, but after watching this I think I'll cancel it & wait for it to hit the $10 or less mark.
I played it for about 10 or more minutes before shelving it. My reason? The same reason why the traiers don't use game play footage and keep the camera FAR back from the characters. The models don't appear to have any significant effort put into them.
This looks kinda like, My Time at Portia before it was! =) definitely going to get this one. Thanks for the review. Where can i buy the testicular girdle? =P
I love how you tell people to give a thumbs down when they don't like your video. That for me is an extra proof that you are concerned with the quality of your videos and not try to persuade people to rate you positively for no reason, as many other channels like to do.
I think the biggest flaw of this game is the lack of combat. Sure this isn't what they were going for but it is really important for an open world exploration game unless it's just a farming simulator.
Why don't you play Stardew Valley, or Subnautica (which has a peaceful option)
I was looking for all that too. Sometimes the combat in these types of games can get repetitive very quickly and become a chore more than being fun/exciting. It's the lack of puzzles, even basic ones, that's putting me off this one so far, but we'll see.
there are tons of games that are peaceful and do it right. this one looks like its missing the right parts.
This game is kinda boring, thought is was like stardew valley without combat, but yonder's world and npc is bland and kinda boring
I’ve been debating on getting this game for months now. I’m super indecisive when it comes to games because I often worry that I’ll expect something that’s different from what the game may bring. This looks like the perfect game for me and my kid to chill with, I actually love the safety and relaxed tone.
Thanks, i was almost buying this game.
Edit: I bought the game and i am addicted now:D
jeenlee1 so wadda you think? Is it any good?
I’m curious about 8t for my 8 year old.
Buy the game its awesome.
same, brilliant game
What do u do In the game to keep it going
Whether or not someone likes this genre of gaming. You have to admit,The visuals are amazing,Artistic even. They blend together too well.
ya amazing looking for sure
Mr. Pieced .
לא נראה טוב
Mr. Pieced agreed.
Im glad this video isnt filled with sponsored bullcrap
Or two minutes long.
Palms brought to you by coleman lanterns
Hear, hear!
Today's episode was apparently sponsored by McMuffin scented underwear. ;)
Palms None of ACGs stuff is. Something to be glad about indeed.
A lot of ppl love this game for the relaxed feel to it. Its nice to play to just unwind. Sometimes rpg and combat games seem so simular to each other. They're running out of ideas and originality anymore.
That intro is just like Zelda tho when he runs out the cave
yep
Clorox Bleach is it some kind of joke? I hope that's what they were going for.
Clorox Bleach with far worse music.
to be fair this game has probably been in development for at least a year, so the fact the intro is similar to zeldas is no more than a coincidence. Its clear they've taken a lot of inspiration from of the legend of zelda franchise though.
emarskineel although this game is inspired by LOZ, it came before BOTW.
All this time the sponsors were FAKE??!!
What a twist!
Lol
What? I've bought all the sponsored items. Where is my money going? Come to think of it none of the items ever arrived...
The Grass, shadows, and overall lighting is really really nice in this game. Reminds me of zelda: breath of the wild but in 1080p and 60fps
So what do you actually do in Yonder? You say there is crafting and fishing but what's the point of the game, what will we end up doing 90% of the time and why?
Keep up the amazing content and speed at which you upload. You are one of the very few youtubers I check every morning for new vidoes.
appreciuate that
I bought this game on the ps store for 7$ and man i'm addicted to it it's so beautiful dans the music is amazing and omg the landscapes ! im in love
I was gonna buy this game like a year ago, but forgot all about it! but glad I found it cheap now.
My all time favorite game is Bloodborne and the Souls series. I spend all my time between those games and Destiny. Occasionally I need a game that doesn't require thinking, is relaxing and beautiful. the brazzer couch reference was top notch. Well played good sir
In light of how AngryJoe is treating his fanbase right now, it's nice knowing there's someone I can trust and turn to for reviews of new games. Thanks
XenomorphFiend agreed.
Still looking forward to the exploration aspect - Looks polished. But yeah, maybe a wait for that :)
As someone that has never played, and can't play Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, I was looking forward to this. nah this game is very boring imo..
Expecting Yonder to scratch the BotW itch is like playing Watch Dogs 1 in lieu of GTA V.
@Iwaves I know its been a long time, but the Switch can be docked and played on the t.v. dont HAVE to play handheld.
You can play Switch on your TV lol.
Dude, Immediate subscribe! Watched most of your videos and they're downright honest and not riding a bandwagon. Keep up the good work!
Will it work with x360ce? Controller emulator, i’m using xiaomi gamepad.. thanks

I guess this is to Breath of the Wild like Oceanhorn is to Wind Waker?
i really do think a game like this would work wonderfully on the switch! Great review once again karak
Would this be a good game to introduce gaming to a non-gamer spouse?
What about animal crossing? Definitely no risk there 😂 honestly I loved this game wayyy more than animal crossing or harvest moon
I'm subbing because your sponsor joke made my morning! Thanks for that!
I like this review. You gave your honest opinion and that helps out a lot. Thanks!
This was exactly the review i needed. Thanks.

I've not been much of a gamer for years, but do like exploration, collecting and crafting (when meaningful), virtual reality type games. So what games "like this" would you recommend instead of this?
Puzzles, combat, voice acting, vehicles/interesting ways to get around (think glider in botw/grow home). You have to have at least one of those!
This looks amazing. I love that there is no combat.
Great review, Karak. Always appreciate the work you do.
I really appreciated this video, I was thinking about getting it simply because of my love for stardew valley but now I can see that there isn't enough to hold my attention

Probably some of the best content on youtube, keep it up!
question I ask myself now is, do I buy it today (digital download) or wait till 25th for the physical disc ver @gamestop for $30. :-)
Great Job on the video!
I was really looking forward to this, unfortunately if there is no "hook" in the gameplay, it usually gets boring quite fast for me.
Your reviews are awesome man keep it up
I'm not gonna lie that ad intro was so good i kinda though it was real at first.
This does look amazing. Really love the art. I think I could have some fun with this but I'll definitely wait for a sale.
Darn, I was hoping Yonder was going to be really good. Though I think I will buy it when it is on sale. Well I guess this *is* why I watch your review of a game before buying it. You give me the info I need to decide if it is worth it for me. Thanks for another great review!
The visuals are just so ......magnetic ! I just cant not buy it even after this review and see for myself !
lack of voice acting, the world is too big it feel empty, there is no challege (except if you consider collecting sprite as challenge), the story is lacking, the crafting and farming are lacking as well.
The good point is the sprite are cute, the world is beautiful, the light in object is great, the animal are cute (my favorite is buffalo like animal)
Regarding Big Johns Scented Testicular Girdles; am I the only one that looked for a link in the description?
lol
ACG i need something that lifts AND separates
Wiffernubbin
Was that a Futurama reference?
Thanks for the review! This looks right up my alley...I'll be downloading at midnight.
Where can I purchase the cinnabon nut scent thx
nice review... narrator has a great voice and is quite amusing :)
Sometimes games like these suit those who don't want stress and just beautiful exploration. Thankfully games like this deserve to exist and it's known as the "relaxed" genre of games. the Journey games are like this as well. It's immersive relaxation, and an alternative to VR.
Yep. Gonna wait a bit.
Nice review! Thanks :)
Does this game really need 2048 gb video ram Like canyourunit says? It's the only requirement my computer doesn't meet. So can I play it or not?
Awesome review... I was considering getting this for the switch.
I mean do games for kids have to be easy? It can differ.
Cool, you gave me a reason to buy it now
Yeah, I do agree with that.
Really enjoyed the review +1 I'm still buying this game just to experience it's fantastic artwork and beauty I never had the chance to try out Zelda.
lmao that intro killed me
Great review as usual!
Wow, great review and impressive content in general, congratulation sir, you are doing an incredible job :)
Quick question: would you consider doing a Q&A?
I guess the fun factor shall forever lie yonder.
I thought I'd hate it but it's surprisingly good.
will the devs support it further? Maybe adress stuff touched in this video.
Do you recommend this as one of the best "chill games" of the year? This is one of the games that seem perfect for relieving stress from a hard day's work lol
sure
Fucking hell karak took a Big sip of my soda when i started the video up and nearly spot the whole thing out again covering my kitchen hehe Best opening yet 😀
lol
Thanks - I had preordered the physical PS4 edition from Gamestop based on how gorgeous it looked, but after watching this I think I'll cancel it & wait for it to hit the $10 or less mark.
Damn, I was looking forward to some of those Cinnabun nut girdles.
Really good review keep it up
Can you like upgrade houses and upgrade your farm or whatever
Excellent review
Awesome! Been waiting for this one.
How do I save in this game please?
Really good and honest review
I played it for about 10 or more minutes before shelving it. My reason? The same reason why the traiers don't use game play footage and keep the camera FAR back from the characters. The models don't appear to have any significant effort put into them.
This looks kinda like, My Time at Portia before it was! =) definitely going to get this one. Thanks for the review.
Where can i buy the testicular girdle? =P
what up bro and hope you're well
can we make a playlist of all his vids that aren't buys? because to me those are more interesting, such as this one
I love how you tell people to give a thumbs down when they don't like your video. That for me is an extra proof that you are concerned with the quality of your videos and not try to persuade people to rate you positively for no reason, as many other channels like to do.
Great review!
Looks like a fun little game for when I've only got a bit of time to play.
Hopefully it comes in PS Plus some day :p.
Great review as always ^^.
thanks
Hey my man, it's 15.99 at PSN right now. Should I go for it?
ewww no combat. That's a nope
Where are the enemies?
How convenient! This just came out on Switch :D
I has hoping for some addicting game mechanic mentioned that would make this a must own. I really wanted this game to be great.
Wish the camera wasn't ugly though. I hate how the camera goes too high.
Great review
Thank you for this review.
That intro though.. LOL. :D
I think the biggest flaw of this game is the lack of combat. Sure this isn't what they were going for but it is really important for an open world exploration game unless it's just a farming simulator.
