    Bit of trivia- Blue Thunder was turned into a short lived tv series in the early 80s with James Farentino in the lead role as Frank Chaney and a (very young) Dana Carvey as his observer "Wonderlove." Can't remember if they explained how they resurrected the helicopter in the series or they just went with re-writing history that it was never destroyed in the film.
    The air team was paired with a ground unit (code named "Rolling Thunder" in a specialized SWAT van) of cops played by former NFL stars Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith (also of "Police Academy" fame... which should be on your watch list ;^) ). I only really remember the pilot episode in which a bad guy seeks revenge against Frank by shooting LAPD helicopters down with a military plane.
    The show was going up against *another* helicopter tv show on air at the time "Airwolf." Airwolf won out while Blue Thunder was cancelled after only 11 episodes.

    • @manofsan
      @manofsan 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, you could say that the TV series was a rebooted storyline, since they had to make a series out of it
      The series got canceled due to low ratings, and also I think James Farentino got into trouble with the law for stalking his ex-wife (not with a helicopter of course)

    • @alucard624
      @alucard624 Год назад

      In one of the episodes it was revealed that a second Blue Thunder was built and that's what was in the show besides a lot of use of footage from the movie to save money. The show was pretty bad from what I remember and I'm not surprised it was cancelled as quickly as it was. I do remember there were 3 shows based around helicopters in 1984 due to the success of Blue Thunder. You had Blue Thunder the series, Riptide, and Airwolf. Riptide was great in it's own right but Airwolf was the best of the three.

    • @BadGVideoGames
      @BadGVideoGames 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@manofsan The Nielson ratings were fine, it was averaging a 14.5 share. It was Farentino's cocaine addiction that caused the show's cancellation. Dana Carvey walked off the show during the final episode of filming because James was out of control apparently. The show was very successful in international syndication (just like Street Hawk) -- with both shows only having the single half season but airing in dozens of countries.

    The helmet gunsight that aims the chin cannon is used on the Army Apache helicopter, in service since the mid 1980's. Other countries have those systems as well. The helicopter used is a French Alouette. All that external body plating was attached to the functional fuselage of the Alouette. This made it heavy and difficult to fly. The 20mm rotary cannon is used on many jet fighters. The Apache uses a single barrel 25mm gun, as well as missiles and rocket pods. The first dedicated attack helicopter was the Cobra that saw service in Vietnam. Advanced variants of the Cobra are still flown by the Marines.

    Blue Thunder is a modified Aérospatiale AS-341 Gazelle, with a three bladed fully articulated main rotor. The helicopter Chocrane was flying was a modified Hughes 500, with a five bladed fully articulated main rotor. With the right reinforcements, both aircraft are capable of aerobatics but there are aircraft better suited for it.
    The Bell 206 Jet Rangers flown by the police have two bladed semi rigid main rotors and are incapable of aerobatics, just as any helicopter with the two bladed semi rigid system is.
    The most well known aerobatic helicopter is the Red Bull MBB BÖ-105. It has a four bladed rigid main rotor, and was developed by Germany to carry tube launched anti tank missiles. You’d be amazed at the video of a West German 105 buzzing around at less than 50 feet off the ground whipping around trees and pulling tight turns with the blades almost clipping grass, wild and ballsy pilot.
    Also, the AH-64 Apache with a four bladed bearingless main rotor, the Eurocopter Tiger and Westland Lynx, both with a four bladed hingeless main rotor system, and even the enormous Sikorky CH-53 with a six bladed fully articulated main rotor, have all done aerobatic maneuvers successfully.

    My favorite movie growing up as a kid. I got my dad to keep renting it all the time. I never understood it as a kid what was going on as I was only interested in the cool helicopter. Wasn’t until about 5 years ago I watched it as a adult that I understood it

    The German Bo-105 being capable of performing a looping has already been mentioned. But they also had the helicopter of this movie perform a real looping. It's not a camera trick.The bad editing / cutting of that scene just makes it look fake. There is a video on RUclips showing the stunt work of the movie including the unedited record of the full looping.

    Love this film and this story as an kid.
    Saw it with my father.
    The climax was so ballistic.
    There was a tv series that followed.
    I couldn't get into it.
    Doesn't hold up as good as the movie.
    If there is one thing i do know, old school videogames with helicopter action (Choplifter, Tiger Heli, Thunder Blade, Steel Talons, etc) were most definitely inspired by Blue Thunder.

    Holy crap! After my saying forever that no-one 'first-time-watches' any John Badham movies, within three weeks two of his movies are reacted to. May I recommend also Wargames - made the same year as this actually and probably his most remembered movie. For those looking for a Wargames reaction in the meantime, there is only one so far: ruclips.net/video/y12xhIvzKeM/видео.html&t

      John Badham, Walter Hill, Peter Hyams were great directors in the 80's who don't get enough credit, they made so many great movies. Short Circuit, Stakeout, The Hard Way, are great Badham movies. Extreme Prejudice, Trespass, are great Walter Hill movies. 2010, Running Scared, Outland, Narrow Margin are great Peter Hyams movies

    Love this movie, it's one of my favorites still. As a kid, I loved it for being cool helicopters, didn't understand the story much. But now, I love how it brings up controlling people and how invasive government can be. Plus, bad ass helicopter! The bad guy, was actually afraid of flying, and hated doing those scenes. I love the interactions between all of the characters. The chief isn't just the stereotypical hard ass, that always busts balls, but also backs up his guy. Roy is just awesome.

    A good 80's helicopter tv series worth watching is Airwolf. It had 3 seasons with the original cast and one season (not as good) with a different cast. You could probably do a reaction to the 2 hour pilot episode.
