Former Manchester United striker Alan Smith is this week's guest, with a timely appearance as his other ex-club, Leeds United, are promoted back to the Premier League.
Smudge opens up about his feelings at the time of that move from Elland Road to Old Trafford, revealing how his dad broke the news to friends in their local pub. But the Yorkshireman explained it was easier with Eric Cantona and Rio Ferdinand making the same move in years prior.
There are stories about learning from Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Keane, and how he wish he had more time to shadow the former Utd Captain when the boss converted Smith to a central midfielder.
Alan also goes into great detail about his career-threatening leg break against Liverpool and how he feared his foot may have needed to be amputated after the horrible injury at Anfield.

Smith was a warrior on the pitch for Man United. So glad he got his Premier League winners medal of 2007
Loved Alan Smith. Every single game he played for the club, he gave 110%. You could see he cherished the role. Unfortunate what happened to him.
what happened to him?
@@billycole3565 Injuries kinda messed up his career with us. And he had a really bad one with us. Our current squad needs someone like him. Just fire and desire whenever he puts on the shirt.
This guy had the heart of a lion, talk about defending from the front, when we had him n Rooney up top, 2 absolute pitballs
Pitbulls*
But yeah this dude has literally given sweat and blood for the badge.
Tevez
@@thebaldblogger7893 Yep he was devilish too, but Fergie saw the bad side in him, which became apparent at other clubs
Robbi or Keane?
Robbo
What the hell the title about?? Didn’t even mention Roy in the clip
Bizzare. I think they just shot themselves in the foot there
The full podcast does.. but yes I agree.
Clickbait. Got me too.
Leeds fan. Love Alan Smith, he’s Leeds through and through. I was proud he got to play for the biggest team in England at the time when he left.
Alan Smith is the best example of Man Utd tough players, like Rooney, Keane, Ferdinand, Scholes even CR7. My favorite kind of players, i miss that time
I was gutted for Smithy, he would've been a legend for us had injuries not blighted his career, a proper player, always put a shift in.
if Alan back to United as part of coaching staff, it will great as he will show how to be a lionheart for the club we love, GGMU!
Anyone and everyone can't become a coach at man Utd 😂
Smudge always fought for the shirt great player to have in the team
❣💌
He is a Legend though faught with his heart
Ill admit when we signed Alan from Leeds I was unsure as he played with passion for his home town team that he wouldnt for us but fair play he gave his all in a red shirt.
Such a shame his ankle break stalled his time at Utd but glad he got a league title with us.
Still one of my favourite strikers of all time! I was happy when he signed for United.. But it was really sad that he ended up with that injury.. I literally went it shocked when I was watching that game.. I really got heart broken.. Especially when he had to leave the club.. Thanks for everything Smudge!
Man like Smudge!!!❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Alan's injury was probably the only time I cried as a football fan. He was an absolute beast and gave everything he could.
Alan Smith was a great signing 👏 worked hard for the team and never moaned about where he played, a good professional.
When life gives you hundred's of reasons to cry, show life that you have thousands of reasons to smile.
I wish they would let the guest talk instead of talking over them all the time
sinister79 but they did ? It was a good talk and there’s balance between how much they talk and how much they let the guest talk imo
Alan Smith was a master of clean slide tackling. Who remembers his time as a DM?
Total respect for Alan Smith.. I’m sure it was because Leeds/Leeds fans loved him so much that he was “allowed” to leave for Utd.. not an easy move to make but he took it and gave 100% every time he wore the shirt 🙌🏾
I remember going to the cliff in 06 n this guy was on all the posters around the place that we’d take home after a session😂😂😂😂
for Gods sake, sign some players!. all this history will die soon if we dont make signings and build from it!.
Still yet to replace Nani, Ronaldo, Scholes and Vidic
Sign Sancho & Thiago
And Ronaldo has been replaced by Ronaldo
Just loved watching Alan Smith play. One of the first players I watched when I started supporting United and one of my all time favourite players
Got notification and Saw Alan smith oh my god I'm happy over to the moon missing him so much
Great player always give 100 percent when he played for us glad he went out as premier league winner in last season at United.
What a player he was for us. GGMU.
i loved him at man u fav player
What a player, Smudger! AS14 🔥
the aggresion of Alan Smith was outstanding
Back then teams like west ham and leeds if they didn't sell there players should of been too four teams! Woodgate, Ferdinand, lampard, smith, Cole,Bowyer, Kewell,Batty,Carrick, defoe
A.smith littrally was magnificent for man U..it heartbreaking for me at time obviously for everyone that injury cause without doubt Smith would ov probably played CM proper quality very very similar to KEANE his tackling got sharper cleaner and his passing range was perfect he had everything literally world-class United player
its a shame that he was around when Van Nistelrooy was still at United and Rooney signed after, limited his chances playing as a striker and change in position which never really worked and would have loved to see a partnership of Smith and Rooney... can imagine it working well like Rooney and Tevez. Thanks smudge
It's amazing how many decisions come down to ajex ferguson called, Alex ferguson this, Alex ferguson that.. from the old generation its hard to look past ferguson being the best scout general manager scout of all time...
There might be another Ryan Giggs, there might be another David Beckham , BUT THERE WILL NOT BE ANOTHER ROY KEANE.
His finishing was clinical his acceleration was sharp always his Ariel presence was phenomenal also his strength and conditioning was highest quality poss.. don't knw why he didn't go bk to United instead ov Newcastle
I wish him all the best for the future. Great player on his day. I remember his dreadful injury.
What an absolute warrior Alan Smith was. The injury absolutely robbed him
ITS SO COOL !!!
naughty cutely lovely alan
Gutted for this guy! Talent wasted by injury...
The kind of players we should be signing, and not gangstas, wannabes, and forever upcoming talents like Lingard.
Sign Sancho, Regullian/Telles, Pau torres/Badiashile or anyone and thiago
Everything was written before we came here
Loved him, he was brilliant
That injury karma for signing for Man U
I love Man Utd #Red_Demons_4_Ever🚩🚩
UNITED AIN'T SIGNING SANCHO! NOT HAPPENING!
Alan Smith 14
Idola saya
Akways liked him as a player
This current squad Comes no close to Roy Keane in terms of leadership.
I would prefer Bruno over Maguire to lead the squad.
Career cut way too short..
Worst third kit ever
He hasn't changed at all!
I was there for the Community Shield at Cardiff to see his first goal, in enjoy he’s tackles and passion for the game! 🇾🇪
My man..
hello
very good
Of course replacing Keane was impossible; the main person Fergie wanted (Gerrard) turned him down when he got Gary Neville to approach him. There was no one else that could do all the things he did!
One of my all time favourites. Not enough like this lad in the game now
miss you alan.
A very great player. Very disciplined and dedicated. Alan Smith is a complete player ❤
Top player and top lad. Gutted United and he didn’t get longer together during his prime. Nasty injury but his contribution was something I’ll always be grateful for.
Smudge legend
Man, I absolutely loved Alan Smith. Still do, such a shame about the Riise incident, he had so much to offer!
Hello 👍
Smith should have stayed agile he got hyped up with being a target man. Ruined his career. The extra muscle put pressure on his body and he was always injured.
Top lad and tasted so so much better nicking him from Leeds......
As a Leeds United fan I am always grateful for Alan Smith for everything he did and I was so happy he signed for Manchester United.
Anyone remember an interview he did whilst at Leeds, he was asked the question "is there a club you would never play for" his answer "Manchester United" was out of his mouth before the question was finished.
Alan Smith was a player who would always leave everything out on the pitch. A warrior who gave every ounce of effort he had. He was so unlucky with that injury but to show that level of determination to come back from it was remarkable & summed him up perfectly. It would of undoubtebly ended the careers of many right there & then. Top Man Smudger❤
Smudge what guy, that Lpool game injuries done him could have won the CL too, best game was that Roma game when he scored, deserved his PL medal
Darren fletcher was nearly as good at his peak, I hope McTomminay fills his potential cos he's in that mould.
Not 1 mention of Roy Keane. You do realise people will scroll past your future content right?
Horrific that anyone can get an injury you don't recover from by going in for a challenge. So many players never the same after on bad challenge.
Man utd
Top Man and very Special Honest Person .All the best Mandy & Nick
Tut Leeds 😆. Could of been a better player. United was in a transition period aswell
From Striker to Offensive Midfielder to Defensive Midfielder to Defender 👌
Effective? How about Park Ji Sung huh? He was good too, wow!
One of my favourite ever players for man Utd. Career cruelly cut short. Atb
Alan Smith is a legend. He instantly caught our eye 👁️ when he came
Still remember the serious injury when vs Liverpool in the FA cup ...
I had an identical injury to him playing Rugby Not pleasant.
Half counts” says the guy having never played in one.
Replacing Roy Keane wasn't an impossible job the man at the time to replace him was Gattuso very similar player very hot headed and just the one and only replacement for a roy keane
No, Gattuso is hot-headed by nature, unlike Keane who also stayed composed and dictated games while playing aggressively. Gattuso was not even in Keane's league, not even close. People see his tackles and fights on RUclips videos and assume that Keane always used to fight with and tackle players.
But he was more than that. And he'll always be missed just like we miss players like Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, and Rooney.
What a bad comparison! do you think Roy Keane was just hot headed? similar playing styles maybe, but Gattuso wasn't in the same league as Keane. Keane was everything Man United represented in one player. to even compare the 2 is just an insult to everything we accomplished with Keano.
@@Mark16D yes but who else at time could you replace keane with only Gattuso he was the perfect replacement simply as that maybe if utd got him we wouldn't be saying utd still hasn't replaced keane to this day
@@davidcollins2044 that's the whole point! he was irreplaceable. There was no one around at the time to do what Keane did, and there still isn't really. the closest person that probably could have replaced Keane MAYBE was Steven Gerrard. but even that wouldn't have been a guarantee!
Gattuso was not the same as Keane. Keane controlled games Gattuso was just someone who broke up play and destroyed the oppositions rhythm
Could do a decent job in midfield aswell
Imagine if Roy Keane was the manager of united 🙄
My favorite ManUtd player!
I remember that game after the injury, he gave all
They don’t make them like this anymore.
Such a great player in his short time with us
Alan Smith = Van De Beek. Looks, football style, heart.
Agreed? 👇
My favorite player #smith ❤️❤️❤️
A true champion ❤
Very glad to see him
Alan Smith 🙌⚽
Sign Sancho
Smudge!
