Honestly as a performing musician, I think this is one of the most profound and honest performances I have ever witnessed. We all strive in this craft to achieve that connection between song and artist and audience; the synergy that exists only in places where something special and genuine exists. I am touched and moved! I have always been a fan, but this is something more than even the usual Damien Rice experience.
J. Michael Bailey Very true. It is like he is just three centimeters away and I wanna hug him all the time. Sings like the most tallented, skilled and emotionally experienced guy. Just became better within the last years. Especially in the parts without Lisa he is just a lonesome survivor of a magic lovestory written by music and emotions. Unique piece of music.

I met the drummer through a mutual friend once in Dallas about 25 years ago when he had his own jazz band, The Earl Harvin Trio. Wondered what happened to him, and here he is. I’ve never seen a percussionist who could play off the energy of others, including the crowd, like he can. Damien Rice is pretty good too.

Sat in a hall in Limerick (Ireland) in 1997 and watched Damien grow and flourish. Amazing, emotional, truthful, complicated is what this lad brings to the mic and the guitar and the audiences are on the end of a string watching the magic unfold. This concert puts the goose pimples to the fore.
I saw him perform at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, TN in 2007, sans Lisa (this was right after they broke up), and then after the show my friend Adam and I managed to get backstage, along with about 30 other people. They wheeled in a big cooler full of bottled beer and water for us, set up a sound system and put some groovy music on, then Damien (all introspective and shy) and the band came and hung out with us for about an hour. My friend Adam, all dreadlocks and tattoos, had come with me to Memphis on a sort of Jeff Buckley pilgrimage (on the 10th anniversary of Buckley's death, there in Memphis where he drowned in the Mississippi River after only one glorious album). Adam, ever the indomitable extrovert, practically stalked Damien around the room. I actually turned my back and to compensate energetically. Adam worked up his courage and asked Damien outright if he might play something for us. This seemed kinda rude to me, as Damien had just given one hell of a concert, turbo-charged, no doubt, by the emotion of his recent split with Lisa - all of their previous vocal duets were now solos, etc. Damien said all his gear was already loaded up on another bus that had just left. Then Adam mentioned that we brought our instruments. Damien surprised us both and said go and get them. So we did. We ran 3 blocks to our car, got our instruments and ran back, and had to talk the doorman into letting us back in. Ha. Out of breath and full of adrenaline, I plucked tentatively at my guitar for a few minutes before Damien walked over and took Adam's ukelele to play along. It was horribly out of tune! Gah! (Typical Adam...) I held out my guitar to Damien, who demurred, until I told him what an profound honor it would be. He sat down and started playing the opening strains of "Cold Water," and the entire room instantly went silent, and everyone sat down, enraptured. Someone dimmed the lights further, way way down. I found a single string on Adam's uke that was in tune and played some subtle accompaniment. Damien then played "Amie." What a voice! He filled the large room with such warm sound. It was truly amazing. Transcendent. And then... with an implicit nod to our Buckley pilgrimage, he played "Hallelujah," Buckley's most loved and well-known rendition of a Leonard Cohen song. Almost everyone sang along, albeit rather timidly. There was one verse Damien couldn't remember, so he cycled the chords a few times and looked at me and I fed him the next line: "You're faith was strong but you needed proof." Needless to say, as my effusive and ebullient description must surely convey, it was an immensely cool experience. And my guitar is all the more precious to me now. (It has also been played by Joseph Arthur and Sean Hayes, two of my other favorite living musicians and songwriters.) Afterwards, I thanked Damien in a heartfelt but casual way, and everyone dispersed, but not before nearly everyone offered words of deep appreciation to both me and Adam for making it happen. The more I thought about it, in the days and weeks to follow, the more I came to think that Damien must have needed that extra bit of communion as much or more than we did. With a few exceptions, that was one of the last tours Damien has done until now. So very glad to have him back. :-D
Sam Johnston well done man! I think he really loves music and connecting with people, he's defo not a money machine or a fake radical chic or anything of that kind. Hopefully he will keep walking on this pattern
i'm a 19 year old girl who is deeply in love with damien rice. he speaks poetry and i find it really beautiful. it's hard to find anyone that appreciates him nor even know him. i've played this video to listen to him in this version so many times but never really watched it . so, im just writing this because i noticed a man. TO THE MAN (i doubt he will even see this ) singing to " I dont want to change you " ; i have fallen in love with you. i've never seen a man look so beautiful singing to a song (apart from damien rice himself)
@@julioartemus3789 i am still in love with him, and always will be ( favourite song is "back to her man". and i do have 2 of his songs tattooed on me :) damien sings with his heart and soul. i love trying to interpret the real meaning behind his songs.
To +Earl Harvin (drummer) the way u followed and complimented Damien when he went insane in the depth of his feel in the music was fantastic ! especially from 35:00 your exceptional way of attempting to read Damien's mind as to what he will do next is fabulous! i must give u props for that and i must get my Swan, my drummer to watch it. Congrats again.
The first time I saw Earl Harvin was 2000 with "the the" at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago. It was then standing there watching him play I was completely blown away. From that moment on I followed him. He is truly one of the finest drummers I have ever seen or heard.
I don't know why I like this artist so much. I remember first hearing him, and being woken up by it. I remember thinking to myself that it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. This was back when I didn't know what it was to love romantically or had felt the bite of it. Not a child and barely a woman - I didn't understand. As I grew - imagination filled into understanding and its never lost this charm. Rather, the transparency of the mystery made it all the more dear. To me, this is the best kind of magic. Thanks for sharing this video, and I'm so happy that he's touring & recording again!
None of my friends truly recognize or appreciate the genius and sheer unadulterated talent of this amazing man; I went to his recent shows alone. Sure is nice to come on RUclips and commune with all the other drooling fanatics. :)
alienbaby09 i made many mistakes not going to shows because none of my friends wanted. I would never forgive myself if miss the chance of seeing him live. What a fucking one man show (almost) he did here in Portugal few years ago. And of course I MET him! Talked with him for about half hour, even said to him he made a crime not to wait a few years more to record the second album... He looked at me and said: you know Marco, I agree with you because now I realize that...
I adore damien rice, such a talent and an amazing voice, just so stunning, powerful, gentle, soft and hard all in the same verse! And now over 10 years since his last album, surely another one is well overdue now?❤❤❤
Earl Harvin is wonderful. Not many visitors will have known him... A session drummer, living in Berlin. Love the way he pulls his shoulders at 26:50. A drummer who feels the music in his finger tops.
52:10-54:00 is insane! I love Damien to death, but Earl too! He's something else. Seriously. He puts so much flavor into those drums, so creative...speechless.
I’m a HSP. Throughout my life there’s so much that makes me feel intensely, music is one of them. I love music and what it delivers. I have my faves but goodness, Damien Rice and his works are at the top of my list. He hits every cord within myself. What a creative, imaginative, soulful being. Much gratitude for him and this upload 😊
I used to listen to this while I was feeling low, while being sad, while being desperate. Now life is better and I come back to it just to remember about those feelings, to feel them again but from a better place. I guess there is something (bitter-)sweet in sadness. For me Damien Rice and John Frusciante are unmatched in terms of raw emotion they manage to express, will never get tired of them. they will melt and break my heart forever
I’m Irish and living in Dublin. We don’t see Damien enough ! . This is such an amazing concert. Thank you for recording it . I dip back into it every six months or so .
Remarkable talent, masterful use of a single battered old guitar, deep sensitive lyrics, unique vocals, intimate setting, sympathetic drums. Wow - glad I found this on YT
Ive known him for a long time but never listened to a live concert. So I decided to take few bottle of wine and listen to him. Best decision ever. Its like: alcohol doesnt make you feel more, but it helps, and when it reaches climax, you are feeling every note and word he is saying. I wont say any more word but ENJOY. For sure i’ll go to a concert from him. Lovely and lovely. (I’m from Spain and my english is not the best, but I tried). HAVE A GOOD, REALLY GOOD TIME💜
I must have watched this at least a thousand times now & it never gets old. When I'm on my own & playing my guitar along to this, I go somewhere else & it's a place I wish I could live, it's that nice & serene there.
This is what defines a good drummer. Not the flashy solos , but the energy they put in their drums and how well they manage to follow the others while still being the master of tempo.
I had several friends listen to Damien and they always said his songs made them feel depressed. I don't know why but that has not been the case with me. I feel like there is a therapeutic quality to his voice and lyrics. It provides a catharsis of sorts, like having emotions buried deep within your soul released in a torrent. So, you sit there in semi darkness mesmerized by this man who can so eloquently express feelings you didn't even know you had. It's like being in therapy; only, someone else was doing all the talking while you're sitting there just nodding your head in agreement. After I've listened to him for at least an hour or two, I feel like I've had a good emotional workout and I'm ready to dance to upbeat songs like "Shape of You."
So I just got back from his Boston performance (4/8/2015). If you ever happen to read this Damien, I was the one saying I love you in French. Don't get me wrong, I love Damien, but it didn't seem as personal as his Montreal show that he play November 21, 2014. I really think that audience/venue/mood play HUGE factors in the whole experience of the show. In Montreal, he played to the audience and was extremely charismatic. He came out of his shy, introspective shell and gave, what I thought, was the performance of his life. Literally, he had us all at opening of his show Elephant Gun to the close of his multiple encores, I Remember. Each song felt like a personal letter or almost personal ode that almost seem to say, I'm so sorry, things will be okay. Perhaps, as well, the performance felt like my favourite artist giving me a personal it's okay/healing moment as my boyfriend and I had just broken up two days prior. In any case, when he came out to sing The Professor/La Fille Danse, the audience went absolutely NUTS!!!! Most definitely, it was because he was trying to charm us with his broken French (hehehehehe awesome Damien). Additionally, his Volcano was awesome when he got the audience to sing the chorus. By far, though, the highlight of the show was when we invited an audience member on stage to role play Cheer's Darlin'. So he had admitted to us that he had gone to sushi and was already slightly "tipsy" from sake when he came on stage, but that's tots cool. We love you through and through Damien. Anyways, he begins the song by pouring them each a glass of wine and begins recounting the story (do you notice he changes it every time he sings the song??) So while he sings the song, he proceeds to finish off the bottle of wine with her, then orders a second bottle of wine for himself (she orders the rest of the sake to come on stage. As she stumbles off stage, he continues to strum and sing, though he forgets some of his lines (oops, its okay). Throughout the rest of his show he periodically checks up on her. Literally, though, his performance was probably the highlight of my 20s. Hands down the best concert that I have EVER seen in my life. He had like 20 encores (each time he said that he would stop because he was going to get fined for playing more, the audience booed and said keep going....we even insisted that we would pay the fine for him if he did get one). For a set that was supposed to only last 1.5-2.0h, he played nearly 4. I think the only reason he truly stopped at I Remember was a) he was out of new songs to play and b) he was starting to drunk to the point of forgetting lyrics and claimed he had to be functional enough to get on a plane in NYC the next day. Also, it was the last show in his mini-tour of North America. I love hearing that brogue of yours, Damien, and I love love love hearing your charming nature. I will never forget that performance. I wish I could see you again in Montreal. I love you, Damien, and I cannot wait to see you again.
I'll never forget seeing him at the Ryman in Nashville, and you could tell much of the audience didn't know him(the Ryman gets a lot of Ryman-goers and tourists who just want to see any show there) but as soon as he opened the show like this man...you could have heard a pin drop the whole way through. Also storytime, the guy in front of us was totally on a date gone terribly wrong. The girl went to the restroom somewhere toward the beginning of the show...and never came back. Poor guy sat there fuming and heartbroken and stuck listening to some of the saddest heartbreak songs for another 2 hours!

Pure genius. I woke up in the middle of the night needing to here this whole set again. Bravo!
Nice one, I do that sometimes!🤗
he sings from his soul direct into our soul....
simply best song "maker"!!!
2024, and I still think this guy is the greatest singer song writter of all fucking time, he's also a legend live.
This is the kind of setting I'd love to watch him perform in. What an incredible experience that must have been for those people there.
I remember it well.
Its one thing to write beautiful words, another to sing them, and then theres this. Majesty. When you can do both AND mean them. Perfection.
I don't feel like enough Americans appreciate the brilliance of Damien Rice.
Those who do(and there are many), can try to make up for any appreciation felt lacking.
I have the same thought. And I’m American!! Lol
As an American I agree! Ditto for Lisa Hannigan! Oh also Ben Howard!
I do. Been a fan since blower's daughter came out.
Racist! Lol 😂😂
Give that drummer a fokin' medal!
Indeed! On the spot, such control of volume, complements the songs with class...incredible.
I just love him he just makes me FEEL
i'm a 19 year old girl who is deeply in love with damien rice. he speaks poetry and i find it really beautiful. it's hard to find anyone that appreciates him nor even know him. i've played this video to listen to him in this version so many times but never really watched it . so, im just writing this because i noticed a man. TO THE MAN (i doubt he will even see this ) singing to " I dont want to change you " ; i have fallen in love with you. i've never seen a man look so beautiful singing to a song (apart from damien rice himself)
now you're 23 are you still in love with Damien ? just checking
@@julioartemus3789 i am still in love with him, and always will be ( favourite song is "back to her man". and i do have 2 of his songs tattooed on me :) damien sings with his heart and soul. i love trying to interpret the real meaning behind his songs.
To +Earl Harvin (drummer)
the way u followed and complimented Damien when he went insane in the depth of his feel in the music was fantastic !
especially from 35:00
your exceptional way of attempting to read Damien's mind as to what he will do next is fabulous!
i must give u props for that
and i must get my Swan, my drummer to watch it.
Congrats again.
The first time I saw Earl Harvin was 2000 with "the the" at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago. It was then standing there watching him play I was completely blown away. From that moment on I followed him. He is truly one of the finest drummers I have ever seen or heard.
cool Edwin Hernandez
omg yea man....Earl Harvin did an amazing job. Loved how he seems to immerse himself wif the music and den goes wif it. Cheers Earl :D
I was thinking he is feeling the music well lol he's pretty cool!
Well, I agree... but from ruclips.net/video/4Yit1OqUfMg/видео.html proves it.
The drummer is so good! It would be so hard to follow an acoustic act who plays so passionately. And of course Damien Rice is amazing. #therice
yes, around the35:oo minutes the drummer is so talented and so good.
@@olajuawonbell7370 Awesome, they are so in synch, its incredible!
Awww thanks so much
I like you too and keep listening
None of my friends truly recognize or appreciate the genius and sheer unadulterated talent of this amazing man; I went to his recent shows alone. Sure is nice to come on RUclips and commune with all the other drooling fanatics. :)
Me too! My sister was very annoyed everytime she hears me listening to Damien Rice songs for hours
alienbaby09 i made many mistakes not going to shows because none of my friends wanted. I would never forgive myself if miss the chance of seeing him live. What a fucking one man show (almost) he did here in Portugal few years ago. And of course I MET him! Talked with him for about half hour, even said to him he made a crime not to wait a few years more to record the second album... He looked at me and said: you know Marco, I agree with you because now I realize that...
in the very same boat !
I with you I adore him !
Hope you are still loving damien, all the best 2024
Every time my heart breaks i end up here
I've watched this concert many times and it never gets old. Great performance, great crowd and get venue! Earl is a beast on the skins!
Hope you're still watching ❤
Listening to this video since the top comments here were months old. Now they are years. time flies
And now he's coming to Nepal! How about that!?
And even years after your comment ❤
One of the best songwriters of recent times: refined, elegant, sweet, tender. In one word: SUPERLATIVE. I am glade to have known him.
I'm so jealous of the people there : ( i love him
I love you too 😘
Who unliked this? Jealousy....this is one of the best artist of all time!
This is one of the most beautiful musical performances to exist
l saw Damien yesterday evening at Coliseu in Lisbon. Fantastic concert alone in the stage.
Também estava lá.Espetacular a parte do Bernardo!
+Gonçalo Trindade
O Bernardo fez um bom backing vocals.
Muito bem!
Does anybody trip, amongst the other cool parts of this, on the train going by outside the window. Slice of life, Beautiful.
52:10-54:00 is insane! I love Damien to death, but Earl too! He's something else. Seriously. He puts so much flavor into those drums, so creative...speechless.
You said it!
Care
God nows how often I've watched this. Genius. One of the best sets of all time.
I was not aware drummers were capable of this excellence.
Right?!
Unbelievable
Still so incredibly solid! Tasteful and insanely aware of what's going on. I wish every drummer could be this solid!
C'mon man. He's just playing some easy work with brushes. Put your boner away.
i hope he never stops
I’m Irish and living in Dublin. We don’t see Damien enough ! . This is such an amazing concert. Thank you for recording it . I dip back into it every six months or so .
Remarkable talent, masterful use of a single battered old guitar, deep sensitive lyrics, unique vocals, intimate setting, sympathetic drums. Wow - glad I found this on YT
His energy for Volcano was like he was playing a sold out show in a colosseum. Astounding.
I've come back and watched this version of "Volcano" so many times. You can feel the energy in the room. One day I will see Damien Rice live.
One of the greatest writers, poets, artists and musicians of all time… 💗💗💗
by the wa he was the role model for ed sheerin, witout damien rice no ed sheerin
Damn, he's good.
The Blower's Daughter is a masterpiece of music and writing. It will always be my favorite.
LOL, WHY THESE PEOPLE STAND SO CALM? IF I WAS THERE I WAS PROBABLY SCREAMING, SINGING, AND CRYING AT THE SAME TIME !!!! LOVE YOU DAMIEN!
God damn he has the voice of an Irish dude angel. Been a fan for 12 years.
And I hope you're still a fan ❤
Hope you've been a fantastic 20 years now ❤
Doctor: You have an hour and 13 minutes and 52 seconds to live.
Me: Listens to this
Ive known him for a long time but never listened to a live concert.

Legit honest reply!!!!
That's a very precise doctor you're consulting. :D
And then a RUclips ad pops up on the last minute. Lol
I must have watched this at least a thousand times now & it never gets old. When I'm on my own & playing my guitar along to this, I go somewhere else & it's a place I wish I could live, it's that nice & serene there.
I watched VOLCANO until 13.18, stood up...WOBBLED A LOT AND FELL OVER!!!!
Awesome.
that drummer was SO in sync with him during 9 crimes! so impressive!
Audrey Fulham you look like that and are a Damien Rice fan? perfect ;)
Especially since it's pretty clear before they started that they didn't have any plan/practice to play the song beforehand.
This is what defines a good drummer. Not the flashy solos , but the energy they put in their drums and how well they manage to follow the others while still being the master of tempo.

How perfect would be to have a quarentine live by him
this is just magic... wow, pure magic
I just love "elephant" it moves something inside me that tells me that I'm alive
This is my most favorite youtube video so far! What a set!
I live in Berlin, it is warm and beautiful outside, but I am sitting home watching this. (probably for the third time now)
Oh my gosh. This recording of I Don't Want To Change You really brought it to life for me. Amazing performance. Wish I could see Damien live.
Well said
been listening to these for like the 25th time
His true soul pulls you in and out so easily just effortlessly 🍂
The purest magic you can ever imagine! One of Damiens best concerts ever....
I'm watching this show for the thousandth time, is espetacular!
shame on you , i watch this millions time
What a set. First time seeing it. What a gem
I'm just so grateful i can put the CD on and listen to Damien and Lisa whenever I want.

This is one of the most profound sessions I have ever come across. Damien Rice is a true legend
That was the most intimate concert I've ever seen. Bravo! Damien Rice your voice was great the whole hour plus.
Still loving them, even more than the first time I've seen this magic, thank you for all this love❤
oooo my goood, i have no words ! This woman like a man performance was incredible !
I have not listened to this guy for ages lovely guitar and vocals x
Damn I feel bad for him. Atleast stay to hear the music. Say no later.
Hope you still remember! All the best ❤
what a performance on drums too
Damien Rice touches the soul. Intense, deep, dense, legend. Fan from Brazil.
What a performance, I wish I was there, love this man.
