I was so disturbed by it I jumped off a cliff into the ocean. The only reason I survived is because a pelican got in the way and broke my fall - unfortunately, it was decimated into smithereens because I am so fat that the force on impact was just too much. It caused a cut on my elbow, so a bunch of great white sharks started circling me. Luckily, I am so fat that every attempt to bite me was thwarted. They would just bounce off of my blubber. The sharks were really upset and I told them I would give them the pelican but it was so busted into bits that it would be fruitless to even try to collect it all. They sadly agreed. I just laid there floating like a buoy and the sharks eventually said goodbye and then the very next moment a pack of dolphins came by and they told me that I really have a lot to live for and I thought they were on to something, so I pulled out some tuna melts from my pocket and we shared them in silence.
This song is like a time machine. I remember being at the cinema in London with my friend at the premiere of the film. It was the happiest period of my life. We were young and happy. Now after 20 years she still lives in London, I live in Poland all the time but when I come back to this song, I close my eyes and we are together again in this cinema...This wonderful girl is now a beautiful, wonderful woman. I will always remember her.I can't take my mind off her...

No bro time heals and you will forget about everything. It's up to you to decide to move on or to stay stuck. @@cemrepyrz Hey Cemre, thank you. I guess every day I'm just learning and growing to be a better person. Hopefully, it'll all work out someday. Hope you're doing great.
I watched this film with a friend 20 years ago in an open-air cinema while we were on holiday. Almost six years have passed since that friend of mine died in a car accident, but I still remember those carefree days of our youth.
Maybe I'm wrong here but the Irish have a particular love of the word "so", which is why it's more poinant. I lived there for a while, so, and some of them couldn't end a feckin sentence, so, without adding "so", "so" :) It's used as in English but also used differently, like an emphasis, and general word. Anyway, feck ye, I'm off to reorganise the press.
Thanks to The Voice and Matt McAndrew for leading me here. What planet am I from? This is the first time I have heard of Damien Rice and he's so good! The way he sings is so moving.
Most people haven't heard of Damien, sadly. I heard of him almost ten years ago and felt like I rediscovered music all over again. Such an incredible artist!
I hadn't heard of him until Phillip Phillips did a cover of his song Volcano. And now Matt's version of The Blowers Daughter. Thankful to these silly reality music shows for introducing me to some fantastic artists!
closer is probably one of the most ingenious movies ive ever watched. so simple yet so heartbreaking, the truth of strangers with nothing in common falling in and out of love.
2023 and this song still moves me to tears. Some songs transcend time and this one certainly does. Everything about this song is just brilliant!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
LYRICS And so it is just like you said it would be Life goes easy on me Most of the time And so it is the shorter story No love, no glory No hero in her sky I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes And so it is just like you said it should be We'll both forget the breeze Most of the time And so it is the colder water The Blower's daughter The pupil in denial I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes Did I say that I loathe you? I can't take my mind off you I can't take my mind off you I can't take my mind off you I can't take my mind off you I can't take my mind off you I can't take my mind My mind, my mind 'Til I find somebody new
I was a young dreamer, we were at university by the sea. We were such opposites and we fell into a deep love. Nothing like I had experienced before or since. We grew together, she changed me for the better. A euphoric and longing a deep connection. But the inevitability of winter came. This song reminds me of that time. I sit here 20 years have passed, in my kitchen, my son watches me and smiles, as we both eat our cereal. His dreams yet to happen, mine are passed memories. I smile, the sun shines, that love I had then is now reflected in his eyes. Life is love, to love and be loved and nothing more. I remember her, the song takes me there, but that loved shaped me for what I have now. My wife and two beautiful boys.
Your story makes me sad because even though I imagine you truly love your wife now, and would never change anything because you have your children and a family who you love dearly, it is obvious that you settled for a safe love. But every now and then you hear a song, you remember a memory, and you remember what it feels like to truly love like fire. The greatest feeling in the world, for you is now only a distant memory, and not a reality. Sometimes when we love and lose, we play it safe, and we settle for safe love, and forget about how powerful love can actually be. The kind of love that consumes our entire soul. 💔
Thanks for sharing. Actually your story has reflected me of my past. As I'm growing older, i realize that I can't have or keep everything that I want so bad forever because eventually everybody we love will leave us one day.
I can't take my eyes off of you I can't take my eyes off of you I can't take my eyes off of you I can't take my eyes off of you I can't take my eyes off of you This guy's a lyrical genius!!
when you truly gave your heart to someone, you just cant seem to erase the thoughts of that person from your mind no matter how hard you try, no matter how far you have gone. You cant explain the logic behind your emotions, but you know for sure, you can't take your mind of them.
I finally get to see Damien live on Dec 8 in Oakland. I’ve been waiting 15 years for this! Gonna cry!!!!! This is a HUGE moment for me.. it’s on my bucket list. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@CharlesFossey-ok9vt felt bad for that guy who got yelled at for standing up then everyone came down and stood so he couldn't even sit in his seat. Damien shouldn't have told everyone to come down. Then they kick the guy out for being mad. He had a legitimate complaint. Damien knew he messed up when he played it off later asking is anyone handicapped couldn't see. Even security was like what is he doing?

I know its not his best song and it's the most popular one but I'll never forget where I was the first time I heard it and the first time I heard Damien Rice... and today in a coffee shop it was playing and every emotion and feeling I had came back to me like it was yesterday. I'll be 80 and this song will still take me back to that moment and I'll have tears in my eyes.
Hello!!! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you’re a fan ? Have a great day… Stay Safe
I watched my beautiful wife walk down the aisle to this. The song means so much to me even as the years pass. Truly captivating. Can't take my eyes off you...
Sorry to spoil this for you: this song isn't about love, but about not being loved back. The bridge with the female voice says: "Did I say that I loathe you? Did I say that I want to leave it all behind?" It is about Damien not being loved back by his Sax (may be other blowing instrument, but it's irrelevant) teacher's daughter (hence, the blower's daughter). Call it what you will, but it's most definitely not a love song. It is a very beautiful song, though.
+Bearsus It's based on a true story. He worked at a call center and struck up conversation with this woman- they had a flirtation and fell in love over some time on the phone. He eventually went to her house and she was outside ( he recognized her voice) and to his astonishment- she was a just a school girl in uniform. "Can't take my eyes off of you" was his disbelief as he stood staring at this young girl, this child, that had played his heart- no concept of the destruction her manipulation had caused. She was a game to him. So twisted-- gives me chills. One doesn't usually think of a child, an innocent ( not so innocent) as the perpetrator.
+Luke Gibbons a song meaning is what you bring to it. If it's romantic to you, it's a romantic song- period. So many walk down the aisle to "Every Breath You Take"...which is about a stalker. But hey, they think it's romantic, so why not. Beautiful that it has enriched your life- that's what's important. Your wife is fortunate to have a romantic soul for a partner :)
I know, right? Adam's song choice was so right on for Matt. Damien Rice's music makes it easy for great artist's to sing his songs. Another American Idol sang one of his songs, "Creep" and blew it away. She came in 2nd last year. I so love her "special" way she sang it!! I love me some Damien Rice music.
This song is like a decade old. Damien Rice just released his first album in many years.. and some poser cover's this song and gets a thousand times the publicity. If people would stop being spoon-fed top 40, maybe they'd uncover beautiful music before ten years have passed. P.S. This whole album is great.. check it out!
Mason Fuchs I know this song is a decade old. I've heard other songs from Damien Rice as well and the album O. I was just paying homage to the great artistry here, that was performed tonight on a TV show and done the justice it deserved being sung by someone who did not originate it. So bring it down a notch on the assuming there.
Mason Fuchs gtfo you didn't even hear matt mcwhatshisfaces version. I just so happened to get home when my mom was watching and as he was performing his cover. it is freakin amazing and most of those voice singers suck. i hate the voice.
I love how this comment only has 4 likes yet is so introspective, and comments about a stoopid breakup and has 1.4k. People are wack. In short, your comments sick thankyou!
I was standing across the ocean in a tiny Irish pub when this song came on. Rainy September night, fireplace in the pub and locals just sharing a drink and good company. I didn’t take pictures, video etc. But that moment is burned into my memory for always. It comes back to me in full detail when I hear this song ❤️
I love stories like this. How music can transport us to an exact moment in our lives with perfect clarity. My version was with Same Old Auld Lang Syne, by Dan Fogelberg. I was driving to Atlanta on a cold dreary December morning, and I was sitting in my car in a gas station parking lot when it came on the radio. I sat there and wept hot tears for a love I had never gotten over. That moment is burned in my memory forever.
Beautiful memory. I am leaving for Ireland in less than two weeks. I just got back in October. I met an amazing guy online who has become my best friend. Through him I have found the life I've been searching for. I've also made many other friends there that I miss dearly. I will now think of you and Ireland when I hear this. Should the right moment arise, I will play this while there.. ❤
you're right and I guess damien rice knows that NOW too. but like I said - he was 27 and she was 20. yes almost seven years together but as I said they were very young. and ppl change a lot at that age. Especially a lot of young men don't appreciate such love or a really good relationship till it is too late. Quite a few of my friends had the same problem (at that age) and they all tried to get their love back. no one with success..... (young) women fight for their relationships till they (have to) give up and come to an end. a lot of (young) men start to fight when their love is gone. then they realize what they have lost - but most of the time too late... sry, my english isn't that good. cheers ;)
One of my all time favorite songs. Everytime I hear Damien Rice sing this It takes my breath away. I have shed more than a few tears listening to this song.
The last line is what makes so many of us men suffer with wanting to love, but not having anybody to love. It eats me alive when I meet somebody new if I like them a little I’m way too much. I want so bad to get back to the place where this song Brought joy and a feeling of love. I’ll never forget the girl who introduced this song to me and the same girl who’s heart I trampled on. I hope you found someone new Mallory, of all of my mistakes, letting you walk away because I was so afraid to love again. I went thru the motions with her and paid dearly the next decade.
And so it is Just like you said it would be Life goes easy on me Most of the time And so it is The shorter story No love, no glory No hero in her sky I can't take my eyes off of you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off of you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes off you I can't take my eyes... I listened to this a lot with my Ex GF that I was always very much in love with. Last year, June 1st, she died of heart complications. Love you MJ. 29 years is too young. Life comes quick and leaves faster.
So sorry. She lives on in the words of this song and your memories ❤ I lost my best friend (ex too) aged 19 in 2002 to su*cide, he had had leukaemia twice, we always remained close; and here I am nearly 43 now, he should be too, doesn't seem right 😢
What an incredibly amazing song, one of several on that Damien Rice album. What memories. It's depressing that all the things I wanted then - a good job, a lovely house in a lovely area, healthy happy children, to be married to the love of my life - have all come true. I was much happier in those days, however, living in flatland and scraping by in university. So much hope, so many blissful days, of gentleness and softness. Be careful what you wish for. Days and years without love, kindness, softness, affection but with all the material things you wished for are not worth having. Don't let anybody dismiss the ineffable value of that human connection with somebody special. Its absence will rip you apart, and time won't heal it.
You discredit yourself a bit when in the beginning of the comment you say all the things that you wanted came TRUE. However by the end of the comment your alone and wishing for love. You forget to say WHY you are alone now, you only gave a beginning and an end but no in-between.
This song comes to my mind when I’m feeling melancholy for whatever reason, thinking on my past, remembering past love, old failures, hard times. Then I start to realize my current state, how things changed for me and for the better. I made it through, and I’m happy, but often reflect on the way it was before and the many lessons learned.
I am one of a lucky few, I found my soul mate quite young in life, when I was 18, we got married when I was 20, my husband was 22. We have been together for 39 years. Finding your soul mate doesn't mean you ride off together into endless happiness, it means that you have someone who always has your back and Vice Versa. It's someone who unconditionally loves you exactly the way you are. Someone who doesn't care about how you look, your weight your height and beauty. They can see past all of that and love what's within you that makes you, you.
To the haters on either side. So I found out about Damien Rice thanks to Matt's performance last night. So what? Either way, props to both artists. Good songs hold up to different interpretations, and the best artists know how to mold music&lyrics to create something unique. Props to both producers, the instrumentalists *and* in this case, ok,extra props to Damien Rice for writing the song. Just fyi, The Voice needed his permission to use the song, so he was on board with this.
It's just a song that drifts you in another dimension. Although it is really so depressing and desperate it leaves a taste of hope and rejuvenation. I would say just one word "devine".
But at the end he sings..in till j meet someone new. That's how you have to play life, love and wisdom. You will feel the same way again. It's just human emotion.
@@laurawallis7093 Hello!!! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you’re a fan ? Have a great day. Stay Safe!
The part where ( Lisa hannigan ) she's just standing there, the ocean's wind in her hair , that look on her face, not looking back, then she replies in this saddening voice, almost rebellious in it's undertones... in her own hurtful way she's screaming back at him in her love ... I can't feel my heart in my chest anymore , the build up about forgetting the breeze, her singing 😭😭😭 I love how they captured the raw emotions felt in this piece, how it portrays the story about Damien falling for this girl.
This is one of those songs and pieces of music that have the power to tear your flesh apart, to enter your stomach so much that you feel it implode, and in the end, they leave you more charged and motivated than when you started listening to them. They break your veins and rip your soul apart, one of those pieces of music that literally devastate you, and yet they throw you into the corner, helpless and powerless, only to lift you 20 meters from the ground and shoot you straight into the universe in a perfect, accomplished, and intact world, where there is no injustice and pain but only pure love. It's one of those rare songs that trap you forever and change you, overwhelm you, upset you, leaving you richer and more at peace than before, and they project you into a submarine tunnel through the whole earth and make you reach the end of everything, of nothing, of the essence, of here, there, where and never. Sublime.

This album is 20 years old. Take me back to an incredible time in my life. I met my first love, I did not even know it at the time. The saying ' you do not realise it is a moment until it is a memory' is so true. Unfortunately, we did not last. I am forever grateful for this timeless album for taking me back to those memories.
Twenty odd years that has passed softly, casually into the sands of time. I remember SO vividly a Sunday afternoon as this song played on an old fashioned radio. I sat with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of some scottish magic in another peering out to the rain ponding down on the garden outside the conservatory. We`d parted months ago but somehow (stupidly) i had still believed it was a bump in our time together not the end. But that morning as I pulled into the garage to fill up my car by pure chance she was coming out of the shop. She didn`t see me or recognise my vechile as she was laughing and wrapped up in conversation with another man. I knew her so-so well and I recognised her smile and the animated way she laughed as she leant into him. In a state of near panic I went home and found solace in a bottle. I`d knew I would never hold or kiss her again and she was gone forever as she had forgotten "The breeze" as the song says
Since1984 i can not take my mind off of you.And we were only kids then...I never thought i would never love someone else again.I am so sorry that I did not have the courage to tell you that you meant the world to me...
I'm watching this on 10/4/2018. I read some of the old comments and this song does make you miss someone who doesn't exist. I haven't loved anyone in a long time. I'm not sure I've truly loved any of My exes except My high school sweetheart and I'm over her. But this song makes me want to love someone again. Someone I would miss like this song makes me miss an imaginary love.

It's used as in English but also used differently, like an emphasis, and general word.
Anyway, feck ye, I'm off to reorganise the press.
Simples. Não é preciso complicar!
I love how he ends the song.
"...'till I find somebody new."
So honest.
MrsFriend88 yes, exactly...my favourite line in the song
MrsFriend88 my mind... my mind..
I hate that bit. I don't understand it. How can he be so blithe after such angst and longing?
He understands and accepts the impossibility of bringing her back. That's why the song ends that way.

Never gets old. Still as chillingly beautiful as the first time i heard it, many years ago.
Listen to Volcano and you'll be hooked on Damien's former singing partner, Lisa Hannigan, too!
Lisa Bartels same 4 me...I listen to volcano on repeat... 100 x back to back
Sadly mainstream radios are too busy playing the same rihanna or Usher songs over and over, ;)
One of the rare songs that feel just as intense when you're hopelessly in love as much as when you can no longer

closer is probably one of the most ingenious movies ive ever watched. so simple yet so heartbreaking, the truth of strangers with nothing in common falling in and out of love.
the truth of strangers with nothing in common falling in and out of love... so TRUE... WOW thank you

I was listening to this song so many times on my way to work, in the subway, or walking on the street. It has become part of my life memories. ❤
Totally beautiful. Resonates.
I find the way you wrote that totally annoying
Great scheme of things: You are the lucky fecker. Think about it.
I thought Matt's performance in The Voice was the best I've ever heard but, after hearing this original, he wouldn't stand no chance..

when you truly gave your heart to someone, you just cant seem to erase the thoughts of that person from your mind no matter how hard you try, no matter how far you have gone.

Taking my wife to the Chicago show Dec 1st. She is terribly excited. Also been waiting years
@ridge69 I was at that show too! Drove down from Minneapolis to see him with my wife. So worth it.
Not long to go now. Have a great time and enjoy the show, hope it is all you want it to be.

Matt McAndrew sung this tonight on The Voice an I had to hear the original. And I teared up both times.. this song. Oh this song.
me tooo!! thought it was only me! I'm so in love atm!

What an amazing memory☘️
Beautiful memory. I am leaving for Ireland in less than two weeks. I just got back in October. I met an amazing guy online who has become my best friend. Through him I have found the life I've been searching for. I've also made many other friends there that I miss dearly. I will now think of you and Ireland when I hear this. Should the right moment arise, I will play this while there.. ❤
Beautiful story!

The violin and woman voice bring this song in depth. Really good song.

Sometimes you can't help falling in love with the wrong person...time heals everything....
wrong person or..... bad timing. she was only 20 years old at beginning of their love story. sad anyways
+fallen clouds Good point....although they were together for seven years and if he really loved her he should've never let her walk away...
you're right and I guess damien rice knows that NOW too. but like I said - he was 27 and she was 20.
yes almost seven years together but as I said they were very young. and ppl change a lot at that age.
Especially a lot of young men don't appreciate such love or a really good relationship till it is too late. Quite a few of my friends had the same problem (at that age) and they all tried to get their love back. no one with success.....
(young) women fight for their relationships till they (have to) give up and come to an end. a lot of (young) men start to fight when their love is gone. then they realize what they have lost - but most of the time too late...
sry, my english isn't that good. cheers ;)
I have learned Not to fall in love because of her physical beauty, BUT Fall in love because of her beauty in her Heart and soul.

The last line is what makes so many of us men suffer with wanting to love, but not having anybody to love. It eats me alive when I meet somebody new if I like them a little I’m way too much. Every single time i listen to this song,I end up crying.... 🇧🇩
Ahhh so so true🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I don't understand. You said all the things you wanted 'have come through'? So you got them? But it didnt make you happy?
Btw, 'ineffable', what a beautiful word...
@@jbri1 Still waiting for the reply to this....
You discredit yourself a bit when in the beginning of the comment you say all the things that you wanted came TRUE.
However by the end of the comment your alone and wishing for love.
You forget to say WHY you are alone now, you only gave a beginning and an end but no in-between.
This timeless song is not for those who dont know true meanings of love

Beautiful story, you have been blessed.
That is awesome...congrats...I want that also someone who loves unconditionally and has your back ...
🤍pure love has no reasons
Aaaw bless you sweetheart, I hope you have many more happy years.
Que coisa mais LINDA
How to die without killing yourself? Love someone,
Who doesn't love you back...
Or forever remain in love with someone who has died.
Or just keep trying love is a powerful thing can make you hurt and cry but can also make you happy dont give up on love its there for everyone
Falloutmaster5050 so true.... I've been dead for too long
Its too sad how deep and accurate that is, especially when you see that person hug their boyfriend, it kills... every time, deeper and deeper
But at the end he sings..in till j meet someone new. That's how you have to play life, love and wisdom. You will feel the same way again. It's just human emotion.

The music is a timeless masterpiece. Exactly how I feel when I go stargazing in the desert.
Sublime.
Motivated? This song entraps me and makes me want to look at the sky indefinetely

Damn if this isn't one of the most beautiful songs
I`d knew I would never hold or kiss her again and she was gone forever as she had forgotten "The breeze" as the song says
i grew up with with my dad playing on his guitar and singing this, it's so nostalgic and it's as old as me lol ❤❤❤

Yep 🤚
So it is . . .
I came from the good films on instagram
I'm watching this on 10/4/2018. I read some of the old comments and this song does make you miss someone who doesn't exist. I haven't loved anyone in a long time. I'm not sure I've truly loved any of My exes except My high school sweetheart and I'm over her. But this song makes me want to love someone again. Someone I would miss like this song makes me miss an imaginary love.
I'm pretty sure that, you've loved someone, haven't you???
Its been a decade and i still cant take my ears off this song. It moves me everytime.
The lyrics, the music, the video, and his voice...it’s all just too beautiful!!!
