    Two of my 308"s love 42 gr Varget with 168 Hornady HPBT under 1/2". 1.3 inches at 385 yds. New Bergara with only 50 rounds through it is running 3/4 to 7/8 on a windy day. Cut it back a little .I'll take 100 fps less for half the group size.

    I never had much luck with the varget powder. If you get a chance try Alliant reloader 15 or IMR 4064 or 4320. Those have always been the go to around here. 👍🏻

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Mike! I got some 4064 that ill give it a try on a Satterlee Method. By any chance do you know what grain your rifle like so I can compare?

    • @miketreen7403
      @miketreen7403 6 лет назад +1

      Eagle Eye Shooting My rifles both like 44.5 of 4064 with 150 sst’s. I just load to my savage 99’s and luckily it works in the bolt gun really well. Same with 4320 I used 46.0 and Reloader 15 is 46.5 gr. All with 150 sst’s and lower pressure because of the lever action. Hate beating it up. You can go higher with the bolt.

    • @kylegreen378

      Same here. My 16" .308 might as well be running factory loads, when I load with Varget. Nothing I did got it dialed until I switched to 4064. Same head space, primer, and bullets. Tightened everything up nicely.

    Loved the timelapse/ slide show opening. The transparent logo screen was pretty BA as well. I need to get back to innovating with my video production if I'm going to keep up. Those loads are pretty durn hot. So it seems that Varget is case capacity sensitive, I will keep that in mind. Thank you sir.

    Hey Kenny, I have a Remington 308 heavy barrel, and would like to try the Sierra 175 Matchking bullet. I would like to see some load data on some powders to try for a starting point.
    Great videos! Keep up the good work.

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  6 лет назад

      Hey Everett! Thanks for the suggestion. I have a few 175 SMK. Ill definitely give that a try. I have H4350 and W760 that may work for that weight as well as IMR4064. Any other powders you may think work? Ill probably perform a Satterlee method and I do have a K&M Neck Turner that ill see if itll tighten up groups. Last thing im going to test is Starline offers .308 match brass in a Small Rifle Primer. In my experience so far SRP seems to give a better velocity and pressure curve giving a slight advantage in load development. May be the same here?

      @@EagleEyeShooting I would like to see the results of your tests. I have read that Varget is a good choice for powder with the heavier grain bullets in a 308. I have Lapua brass that I will do my testing with, I am just not sure about "small rifle primer" brass? I know a lot of people use it. Thanks for the reply, and I have subscribed to your channel so I wont miss anything.

      Actually I'm going to test a Satterlee with IMR4064. I wanted to get some rounds down the pipe and somewhat polish the rifling, also get some trigger time to get a feel. I swear by that Satterlee method. It just works!

      RL26 w heavier bullets. Ive got sone 178 amax preloaded got for $17 box. 2580 fps i wonder how they shoot in 1-12 compass. I doubt the 208 amax will stabilize in 1-12 compass. Maybe w rl26 ? Or H450 old powder fr ww1. Awsome powder & hard to find. I'll take 8lb if u locate 😆 lol great job brother.

    I love these load development videos! Is it possible that the same 44.6 grain loads could show pressure signs when fired from a different rifle? Some day I would like to start reloading, though I have to find a place to shoot that's affordable. I really miss having public land to shoot on.

    • @colsoncustoms8994
      @colsoncustoms8994 6 лет назад +2

      maybe if the lans were closer or something like that. Bullet seating depth would definitely be a factor as well. Hodgdon is showing 46 and 45 grains as being max for 2 different 168's though you should* be fine assuming you are loading to 2.800"+ and that the rifle's chamber isn't cut funky and are using standard non magnum primers (and 308 brass, I'd drop a grain for 7.62x51). www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

      @@colsoncustoms8994 Thank you!

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  6 лет назад +2

      Hey Texican! The two biggest variables that may put you in the pressure zone is exactly what colson mentioned above. Seating depth. The reloading manual states to seat at 2.800 with this bullet. Im 75 thou farther out which in most all stick powders will lower pressure. Though im 8 thousandths off the lands with my chamber, someone else's chamber may need the bullet seated further in eg. AR10. Reloading manuals like to stay on the safe side for legal reasons thus usually leave 10% or more error before reaching saami spec cartridge pressures.
      The second biggest variable here is the scales. Mine could be off a few grains or vise versa to yours due to quality, altitude, pressure. In all regards these two variables are what folks urge caution when using loads published outside load manuals.
      From my observations on others, they're loads developed usually fall within a couple grains from what I found to work for me. IMO it's because there is only a handful of manufacturers that produce steel for our barrels. The material used is close to one another so harmonics will be near the same.
      This is an excellent question!

    Do you check your scope to make sure its still tight on the rifle ?

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  6 лет назад +1

      Hey David! Yes that was a known issue on these. The Scope Bases. From factory they are caked with oil. I degreased all surfaces and re torqued. Checked the scope level when I got home shining a flashlight down the front lens to project the reticle on the wall with a plumb bob. No movement. I have some 150gr loaded up and I have a feeling this gun will like that load. Any suggestions?

    What's the thread size for the muzzle brake?

  • @darrynworthy7129
    @darrynworthy7129 4 года назад

    seating depth if not correct will loose accuracy, too many worry about the bullet seating out too far, and worry too much about less jump.
    lots of factory ammo these days shoot really tight groups and they are all seated the same depth depth, eg factory Remington 17 ammo in the 1980s in a tikka i could cover a 5 shot group with a 5c coin (8mm) at 200 yards.
    we could not load that accurate back then it was easier to just buy a pack.
    with that accuracy we missed very very few foxes, and 1 fox skin paid for 20 more shots.

    It's amazing how people tend to hang targets with little or no consideration on what damage their bullets will do! Instead of hanging between the supports, you hung your target and shot up the wood. That's OK someone else will repair your damage!
