The PicoScope WPS500X Pressure Transducer, is probably the most versatile pressure diagnostics tool available. In this video we look at 4 different pressure transducer diagnostic test you can perform with the WPS500. We perform some petrol and diesel in cylinder pressure waveform analysis and use the PicoScope diesel glow plug adapter kit. There's the possibility to perform pulse diagnostics. We use the pressure transducer for injector testing, and how to diagnose mechanical injector problems. A test which I really like the the diesel injector leak off test, where we can identify diesel injector problems by looking at the return fuel flow.
Big thanks to PicoScope for sending the equipment for this review!

This tool is worth its weight in gold if you get good at reading and understanding wave forms. God damn I need one of these lol
Haha, it’s so versatile!
I just realized this tool is incredibly useful in many ways for my career working on diesel powered industrial HVAC systems. The digital refrigerant pressure gauges available on the market have very poor data logging. I imagine this tool is good enough to check the health of a compressor. I genuinely can't wait to get one someday.
Yes I bet it would be! You’d be able to see the operation at a fast time scale and see mechanical operation (I think) and PicoScope also has the data logger feature now!
Really nice demonstration, Thanks!
Parabéns pelo seu trabalho.
If you want to check for valve timing and duration on a diesel you can block the intake partially and preform the in cylinder test again with fuel disabled.
Nice idea, so we get the valve ‘pockets’ 👍
Same for gasoline
Thank you today video very good information
buenas tardes ,maravillso tutorial , gran exsplicacion , y un gran equipo , deverias acer mas pruevas con el transducer en motores diesel, un saludo
Thanks, what types of faults are you working on?
Great break down of an excellent tool, Darren. Nice basic explanation to show the awesome features. 😊
Cheers! What tests do you like for pressure transducers?
@@MechanicMindset I mainly use it for in-cylinder testing and fuel pressure, but now that you have shown me how you can use it for leak-back testing on diesels, I will be using it for a troublesome Isuzu D-Max I have in my workshop that has rough running issues. I have done a physical leak-back test, but it would be nice to see the waveform and confirm what that shows for a video.
It is an amazing tool that I use in the classroom situation with the apprentices, but it seems I am only touching the tip of the iceberg.
Classes have finished for the term, so I am looking forward to using it back in my workshop.
Thanks for the extra ideas 😉
@@MiracleMAX awesome, I’ll keep an eye out for the video. Save the waveform for me 😁
@@MechanicMindset Will do buddy 😊
Nice tools
I guess you could use camshaft sensor to sync with the pressure transducer to identify cylinder waveform on the diesel engine.
Yes for sure, I’ll need to play with that more to see if we can carry the test over between different manufacturers. For example, I suspect most Bosch systems are the same?
Pico osclilocop we do engine analysis testing like engine condition and engine life
Even though it’s a good tool but it’s ridiculously expensive. Automotive tech tools are always expensive for no reason. If they would be reasonably priced most shops would invest and do proper diagnostics. Been trying to save to buy a WPS KIT from pico but other expenses keep coming up. Hope to get it someday.
As coisas boas custam caro. O que as pessoas precisam aprender a cobra pelo diagnóstico. De fato tem custo elevado !
I need to show my employer this video to buy a kit😂
*Hi i have bin enjoying your uploads* . I was wondering if you can make a video or maybe you already have on Automotive Frequency . i have a *Snap-On VANTAGE LEGEND* with guided component tests . frequency test's appear often in my tool . No one ever talks about it , no one ever shows it , No one is seen using it . Can you make a video of the Advantages of yousing it ?
over other methods in comparison . so that i may see its Advantages . ? over other methods such as wave forms ex..my friend told me it help with a missing tooth on a tone ring...and said it must have other tings it can be yoused on . Thank you for your thoughts
Hi! Yes frequency can be used for crank sensor and look at it over a longer period of time. Will see what we can do 👍
Interested to see why you couldn't do the running compression test on the diesel? On a petrol engine the running compression is usually pretty low due to restriction from the throttle plate, but when doing a snap throttle the pressure is usually pretty close to a cranking compression test with the throttle plate held open. So in my mind the running compression on a diesel at idle would not be higher than the cranking compression.
I’ll follow up. Just going off recommendation 👍 UPDATE: It’s not recommended
Because the compression ratio is double that of the gasoline engine, the diesel running pressure should be double the gasoline engine (300+ psi).
Hi Darren. Thank you for your all videos! They are a real bible for me. I would like buy an oscilloscope portable to test injector, etc. Hantek appears good. If someone could helo me to choose, it would be really cool 👌 thanxxx David
Thanks! The new Hantek tablet looks good. Or the MicSic tablet; theirs is ‘automotive’
E visto que ay muchas versiones de picoscope serie 2000 , com estás 2204a, 2205, 2206b, 2208b 2205mso, ay mucha diferencia entre ellos
Hi Darren, i watching your Videos and i want you to try something. Because WPS500 is so sensitive could you try at your Passat or any oder TDI engine (EA288) which are known as leakage inside of intake Manifold (intercooler) to see if it is possible to confirm this problem.
i been thinking to buy this tool, i have a question for you, what we should do with the maintenance , i mean all the humidity that goes thru inside the tool every time we use it , what's the procedures to clean it so our tool have long time life, are there any time life quality or sort of???
Been told, just brake cleaner and dry. Better clean mine when I get back 😆
There are very few fuel adapters in a set for gasoline engines. But good video!)
Hopefully it’s easy to adapt. I have a cheap fuel pressure set with loads of adapters; I think we can knock something up. I think there is another kit with more, I might be wrong…
@@MechanicMindset agreed, not much really and a lot of cars require t adapters with hose and clamps.
Looks like there was some compression loss or leaking in the cylinder pressure test for the VW?
Possibly a slight loss. There will always be a tiny bit of loss. Maybe this engine was a bit cold. I have seen the same
In other diesel engines 👍 well
Spotted
Does the WPS 500 have 3 different transducers spilled into one Box or is it just Just move it to a more precise electrical Value ,,, Maybe an example of one volt for compression in 1 milvolt for vacuum
It would be interesting to know, but it appears to have good resolution in the lower ranges however it works ?
My WPS 500 has a push button that allows you to switch between the different pressure ranges. I don’t know the pressure to mV output, I tell the Pico software that I am using the WPS 500 & which range I have selected. A nice technique is to use two WPS 500s, one on each bank for comparison views, or if you have a suspect cylinder you can compare to a good cylinder.
I’ll see if I can find out.
If you get a pico scope do you also have to pay a subscription to their platform to use it? Or is the platform free to buyers?
No, it’s free. You can download it now and play with the demo mode. To access waveform library you just need an Automotive PicoScope connected to the laptop. PicoAuto.com
Any chance you can do pressure transducer test on cooling system?
For pulse diagnostics/head gasket?
@@MechanicMindset yeah, with the transducer😁
@@mikesabin8568 Yeah it’s possible 👍 What happens on a failure is the pressure increases ever time the compression enters the coolant system
@@MechanicMindset awesome!
what is the difference between the picoscope 2204a and the 2205a

Sample rate and memory. It’s marginally better
❤❤❤❤
👍
Teria algum Pico usado de 4 canais a venda ?
They don’t come up often
Tried to go to the website - is it down right now? 10/10/23
Hi, we have moved so some old links don’t work. You can go to mechanicmindset.com
I will update RUclips links soon. Thanks for reminding me!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
It costs a pretty penny but this is the mechanical equivalent of a genie in a bottle.
😂
@@MechanicMindset your videos are awesome thanks for all the good knowledge
Definitely not. It takes a lot of knowledge and time to learn to use these scopes. 😅
Ooof its a risky game removing a glow plug 😅
🫣😅
Can't afford pico too expensive 😢
👍
