On a wintery night in February 2004, Maura Murray, a college student, crashes her car on a remote New Hampshire road. A few minutes later, a bus driver headed home after his shift asks if she needed any help, and she assures him she's already called for it.
That would be the last time anyone saw Maura Murray. For decades, Murray's case continues to stump investigators. How does a person just disappear without a trace?

I had a car accident when I was living in Massachusetts. A fellow pulled over and insisted he would take me home. The cop insisted that I not go. That cop might have saved my life, and may God bless and keep him.

Oh my I am thankful to hear you are ok! You certainly would not have been the first victim of a terrible con: a driver somehow causes you to have an accident and/or disabled vehicle, only for a second driver to prey upon you. I’ve personally witnessed an attempt at this when one of the conmen even pretended to be injured and laid down across the road!!! I’m grateful to live in a well populated and secure area, with tons of cell service.
Your story is valued and I hope it comes to mind of someone reading in the future under duress. Wishing you peace and safety

If I would ever stop for anyone in trouble, I would simply ask if they would like me to wait in my car in front of them until help arrives, so they're not alone on the side of the road. I wouldn't get into someone else's car at any cost, even if that person seemed like the nicest man/woman in the world. "Nice" people commit crimes all the time.

Why couldn’t it have been the person that called 9/11? They could have pulled up on an ATV or something and followed her and abducted her BEFORE calling and reporting the accident
He was saying he was calling the cops and she probably didn’t want that because she was drunk and it escalated from there? This is all speculation of course but my questions weren’t answered in the doc

Honestly being from that area it's a known thing tourists get lost alot in the woods, but they are always found dead or alive. I don't believe she was ever out there & I think some local hillbilly took her & she's in a basement or something still in that town. It's a small town area everybody knows everybody, if she left on her own people would of seen her, it's all small towns she would of had to go through them. I don't believe anyone could just leave that area & nobody see anything.

This story still brings tears to my eyes! Because it hits so close to home for me. I had just come up from Mass right after Valentine's day in 2004. planning on going right back to mass the next day. Well needless to say I broke my leg and was laid up for a year. All I could do was lay in bed and watch tv. That's when I heard about Maura Murray, where her car had gone off the road I drive by there all the time, and where I am laid up is just across the NH border In Vermont, where it crosses from Woodsville NH to Wells River Vt. And it was so hard at the time, because I didn't hear about Maura until after I broke my leg. Cause It was so close to where I was living at the time I wanted to go out and look, but couldn't.
And also, Murray is my father's side of the family's last name on his mother's side. So, it still to this day makes me wonder if there is a relationship? My father died in 87 so I don't know.
And also, when I was around 4 years old, my mother's sister disappeared in the very same way Maura did. and she left 2 children behind, they were young, staying with relatives when she disappeared, and it was in 1964, so don't even know if there was a police report, being of age she had a right to go missing?
I spent most of my life looking for her, with less answers than you have. Heard all kinds of stories, even from my mother, that she must be dead, she wouldn't just disappear etc. I am sure you know about the stories, miss direct, miss leads, hopes etc.
But what I am trying to say never give up!!! After 55 years of me looking for her, I just had to solve the mystery of not knowing where a relative of mine had gone to? I found her living in North Dakota. A Place that never crossed any of our minds? Her parents, my grandparents had died never knowing what happened to their daughter. And her brother did too. Also, her daughter died at 21 never knowing what happened to her mother. My mother couldn't believe that I found her, the one disappointment is that she had died in 2016 after living a long and happy life. And we had the same pleas as your family, just in the 60's no internet or much else. I found her in 2018, so never got many answers, other than finding people she knew there for years and told us what a wonderful person she was. And now I know where she is buried and has a beautiful burial place. And hopefully someday be able to travel there and visit it. I've seen it on find a grave.

Dear Tina: Since there was no sign of foul play, it is VERY Possible that Maura Just DUMPED Her Family to start a new life elsewhere. Her family may be looking for someone who doesn't even want to be found. I've always felt that someone who was helping her escape was following her and caught up with her at the scene of the crash. That's why she told the bus driver not to call AAA.
This video doesn't mention what a Big Flake Maura was turning into before she disappeared. She got kicked out of West Point in a cheating scandal. She faced charges for fraudulently using someone else's credit card. She got into a car accident where she really blew it. She even wrecked her Dad's when he lent it to her because she was drunk. Maura's life was falling apart and she had reason to run away.
I was shocked to learn here that Maura's sister graduated from West Point too. I've never heard of two siblings be accepted at any US Military Academy. An applicant must not only be an exceptional student but must be recommended by a US Congress or US Senate member. That working class family must have been really driven to succeed to have 2 children be accepted at West Point. Perhaps her family's high expectations made her want to run away.
What her poor family needs more than anything is professional psychiatric services to help them accept that Maura may have just Abandoned them and to move on. Whatever happened to Maura, I say that no matter how big an injustice you've suffered in the past, it's not worth throwing away your whole future for.

Thats kind of horrible actually. Especially knowing people love and miss you and are desperately searching for you. I get it, sometimes it all gets too much. But that just seems extremely selfish. I give you credit because if this happened to my aunt i couldn't forgive that and the hurt she caused . And who knows maybe she had a bad childhood or been abused or just had a bad relationship with family but im a mom of 4 with mental health struggles with a horrible abusive childhood and parents that did nothing to stop it. And we have a volitile relashionship. But if i were to run off to get away and start a new life wich has crossed my mind, my kids would damn well be coming with me. Even if i thought they were better off without me i would leave explanation for them..but to condem them to a life of suffering of not knowing..other than being threatened at gun point or having your kids life threatened..theres just no excuse for that whatsoever..its selfish and cruel.

That's where my mind went, too. She seemed like she was panicking. Also, details matter. When she emptied her bank account, did she withdraw a little bit of gas and food money or thousands of dollars? Since she used an ATM, I'm guessing a few hundred, which is only enough for a short period of time. The death-in-family note indicates she was planning on returning. If she was suicidal or running away, there would be no reason to inform a teacher.
I think: she was impaired when she wrecked and didn't want police involvement. Knowing they were coming, she got into a car with a good Samaritan who was anything but that. He has possibly since moved far away or died, taking the truth to his grave. The late and shoddy police work during the first 24-48 hours really diminished the possibility of a proper, thorough investigation. The harsh weather didn't help.
      I hope I'm wrong.

In watching sister Julie’s more recent interview here, it seems she’s begun to accept what I’ve found quite clear for almost 2 decades: Maura was a severe active alcoholic. While this illness says nothing about Maura’s character, the effects of it on her choices, behaviors and actions most likely contributed to her demise.
Prayers to Maura’s family and friends for peace and closure.

That's why she likely didn't want to call the police, she may have had a few drinks in her.
Nevertheless, there's a lot of information missing in this report, it's sanitized. Sheriff Williams knows what happened to Maura, the responding tow truck owner, Lavoie, knows what happened to Maura, and so did the responding officer, Officer Smith (he died from suicide a couple of years ago) who falsified his police report, saying Maura had hit a tree, a lie.
The family knows what happened, they know she was abducted and murdered. What they want is her remains.
Justice ? Justice will never be served in this case, the perpetrator will live out his remaining years untouched.
The only hope is that one of the people involved, either the killer or someone who helped cover it up, will leave a letter of some kind behind for posterity and bring closure.

@@LucyLu1965 Young people go through phases of indecision, they even make silly decisions, mistakes, that's all part of growing up. Maura was going to grow out of all of this, become a nurse and then settle down. Luck wasn't with her on that day February 9th 2004; an off-duty Sheriif on a drunken tear with a police SUV crossed path with Maura; he picked up Despatch call for police assistance and rushed over, flashed his bsdge, got her into his vehicle and sped off. Williams called tow truck driver Lavoie (he wasn't next in line) to impound her car & smash it to make it look like she hit a tree, and ordered Officer Smith to do the same. Maura likely refused to comply with his intentions, then things went bad fast. Would he have raped her then bring her back to Lavoie's has she complied? I personally think so, as rumors of other similar incidents of sexual assaults had occurred in the general area, but we'll never know. After he killed her, he started the whole cover-up and here we are today, 18 years later. The State of New Hampshire made a decision to cover this up, in order to protect their image and their billion dollar tourist industry.

@yattamharrett1819 No, he never saw Maura. Lavoie Towing's role was to set up the scene. He wasn't even the next one on the list for service that night but was called nonetheless and he was told what to do next, which was to tow the car and damage the front of the end of the car to make it look like Maura Murray hit a tree. He did that by lowering the platform of the tow truck level with the hood of Maura's car and smashing it at a triangular fashion. This means whoever called him to do that had already decided to murder Maura, as she wasn't coming back. The caller was none other than Sheriff Williams who had kidnapped her. Officer Smith who was at the scene had to fake his accident report to say Maura had hit a tree. Maura didn't even come close to hitting a tree or anything else, she had merely slid against a snow bank

I remember this case so clearly, and I've had it bookmarked across all of my computers since. Maura and I are the same age, we were both in college at the time, and at the time, I was going through that "new adult" phase where I wouldn't contact my family for a while if I didn't actively think about it.
I always wondered if she was going to that area to meet someone, maybe a friend, maybe a romantic partner. If she was anything like me, I was using the internet to date and meet friends even before college, because Teen Match was a thing. My mom certainly didn't know that I met a few of my boyfriends online, she would have never let me leave the house if she'd have known, even if I was in college and didn't live at home anymore. I know I used the death in the family excuse to skip school once, and then it bit me in the ass... not even two weeks later, I *did* have a death in my family. I never used that excuse again after that.

Honestly from my professional experience I think the law enforcement have hit solved. It's always hard for family members to believe but Maura was there to more than likely end her life. In this documentary they left out a lot of important facts, like she had drank copious amounts of alcohol all the time. in the mornings, during exam weeks, etc. which lead to her first DUI. Someone that young getting a DUI weighs heavy. I think she was there to do exactly what she ended up successfully doing...ending her life. The rag in the exhaust pipe, that bottles and bottles of alcohol, picking an area she loved so much. but the car wreck is what disrupted her plans and the threat of the police coming to help her made her panic. So she ran off and consequently died of exposure.

I expect she went onto the road , fully intending to go back to her car at a later date but unfortunately for her she met someone who ended her life...jeez, if she had committed suicide there she would have been found by now....it was far too cold for her to have walked very far...be careful what you comment as her family could be reading these..

She'd more than likely been drinking...she'd wrecked another of her father's vehicles earlier (maybe a couple weeks before this accident) so it stands to reason she'd be upset, embarrassed, ashamed...we have the Atwood man approaching to ask her if she's ok....he supposedly leaves her there to go call police. Since the sniffer-dogs lost Mauras scent a short distance away from the accident it`s more likely she got into a car. I don`t think she`s with us anymore.
Maura was possibly overwhelmed by the expectations ppl. had on her, scared to fail and disappoint her loved ones, decides to get away for a short while and a bad thing happened to her.

It’s Atwood clearly!!!!!! And there was a rag stuffed in her tail pipe!!! I think Atwood stopped to “help” and stuff the rag in her tail pipe. Then when she passed out he took her!! And he forgot to take the rag back out of her tail pipe!!!’ So clear. I bet she never told him that she called AAA that’s just his story!😮

  • @jamiedecker7853
    @jamiedecker7853 Год назад +66

I am only 5.5 mins in but couldn't she have said she'd already called AAA just bc she was scared of a man out in the middle of nowhere? I mean, I know I would be...
Also, what about this man?! Hoping he was questioned a lot. Maybe she got into his vehicle where her scent stopped. Who knows.

If the police is a government agency and we pay taxes to support that agency, the public is entitled to have access to those un-redacted files & records. I cannot fathom how turning over those files to the family would damage an on-going investigation.

    • @dirkbenson8153

The family most probably insisted that the files remain restricted. The public is thus not entitled to anything.

The fact she didn't want any attention drawn to her after the accident makes me think she did plan to get away, possibly for awhile and I believe she trusted someone she shouldn't have. Alcohol could've been a big factor too. She might have been intoxicated, and that affects decisions severely.

Any theory should be welcomed. One day we'll know though. Everything will be exposed one day.. Until then, I pray this family will continue to live and be comforted by their grief.

I have so much love for this family just watching their struggles and heartache which is still palpable even after all of these years.
I imagine her dad feeling so helpless but courage like this man has is rare. I know he just wants to bring his baby girl home one more time and it is so important.
I tend to believe bonds like the ones this family has transcends times and dimensions. I believe she is very close to them because of the situation and the grief that lingers on keeps her right there.
They really seem like. such a nice family and I pray one day soon, they will bring Maura home where she belongs. I believe that regardless of the outcome, they will reunite their family with Maura when the time is right, this life or the next.

What a sad case. I feel for this family, not knowing or having any answers has to be draining!! I'm happy that her family is still making sure her name is not forgotten and they still need their help finding her or something about his going missing! It confused me about the dogs alerting and the rumor she was buried in a basement, does anyone think maybe she was with the concrete to pour that slab, that is why the dogs alerted? I hope they get answers soon!! Bring her back home! God bless

Just like the police in the Patrick Chapman case here in Missouri. No real and viable attempt has been made to find either of them. I bet the families would much rather know where they are than they are worried about a conviction. The family is the victim not the police.

When I was living in Rhode Island, my sister called me that her car die on the freeway during that time when it was snowing and cold. My dad, mom, and I went to rescue her. We were waiting for the state trooper to show up with the tow driver. All if a sudden, this young man pull up on the shoulder and ask us if we needed help. My dad was about to say yes…and I cut off him and told that guy to leave because state trooper is on his way. That was a night terror to remember and please, please, please…if someone ask you for a ride regardless you vehicle is dead or walking home alone…just show your strength of action and they will immediately leave.

This is just my speculation....1st one, Is she was preventing a DUI on her record and she went anywhere to hide perhaps a cave you just haven't crossed yet. Than got lost. Than the weather got her. Perhaps no foot prints bc it resnowed.
2nd. A passersby said he would help her, than did something with her. Explains no feet prints. I weigh more on first theory. God bless your family...and may you find her in your lifetime.🙏
