Lol the term quiet quitting is stupid. People are just deciding they no longer need to give their souls to their employer. If you’re not looking to make impressions or move up in your job, just do what’s required of you then go home to enjoy life. This is not quiet quitting. This is living your life with a healthy balance between work / personal matters.

The media loves a good buzzword! lol
I will say this, for anyone looking to move up, just do the bare minimum (for the most part) but take on an extra project or two now and again that is splashy. And then toot your own horn when you succeed at those splashy projects. Our bosses don't need a play by play of our everyday. Especially if you work on a large team where it's impossible to keep track of everyone's everyday work. All that the higher ups need to know is that you were the stellar employee who solved a problem for the company, or who got that big deal/contract/vendor/whatever, or the one who implemented some new thing that improved in some big measurable way (metrics are everything!). That's it. A little showing off (not too much, don't be that annoying person) goes a long way. Next thing you know, people higher up the food chain know about your name too and you've never even met. I only wish I found out how to do this for myself a lot earlier in life. Being too good at a job I hated just meant I was stuck at a dead end job because nobody wants to promote the workhorse because they can get so much work done in a shorter amount of time. But the guy who isn't as fast or productive but is contributing towards scaling up work, or creating new resources/tools for the company? That person gets elevated up. Just wish I had known sooner that all I had to do was "get by" on the day-to-day stuff and put all my energy towards a few splashy projects. I'm certainly talented and skilled enough but I was putting energy towards the wrong projects/tasks. The everyday stuff won't get you noticed.

Agreed the problem is employers take advantage of the employees and try to push their work load on them and then make them like it's everyones problem.

@@SL-lz9jr If I could pin your topic to the top of this discussion thread I would. You are 100% right!!!
I have been in 5 roles in less than 7 years at my Fortune100 company. I had a couple of forced lateral moves but the other 3 opportunities netted me raises between 25%-40% . I can recognize a VALUABLE project when I see one and I jockey for them!
I make a very solid salary and now work on a team that just sent me a welcome kit with about $500 of tech, a brand new phone, laptop, and are like, "Please let us know if you need a new monitor!" Two team leads ago, I recognized my manager was taking the credit for EVERYTHING while doing basically nothing. I networked my way out of there, taking on a difficult assignment that required me to put in a some prep time one or two weekends. Even though the project was ultimately passed to another team, I had done enough of the groundwork that the liaison to that team shouted me out to upper management. That project got me suggested for another technical project and so on. That said, I want to give credit to God because I PRAYED that process through! My work opportunities had been stymied prior to joining my current company. I had A LOT to learn about corporate life and working through my own emotions of inadequacy. That said, it took me until middle age but I'm here and the sky is the limit!!!

Doing what is expected of you at your job is called working-not quietly quitting. Getting steamrolled by your job/boss is called getting taken advantage of. Just because I don't let my job control my life doesn't mean I am next in line to be fired or that I'm getting a low raise. You can be awesome and efficient during your workday - and that's it.

exactly, i was like huh? its called work. The employer will not pay you for the extra time you put in, why should you do them the favor working for free? heck no. i punch in, do my job, punch out and i say see you next time, dont bother me when im at home. however , my manager has no choice. She has to constantly work on call because she basically runs a hotel. But thats the risk she took on when she started the job. We had the superviosr position open up, i could have applied and gotten the job (with better pay) but i was not willimg to sacrifice my time ans effort for a bit more money and a lot more stress.

A little misleading but it makes some sense. All about perspective, depending on the industry or company culture, sticking to your job description is not enough to keep yourself employed, which is not normal. So quiet quitting = doing what's normal at the wrong place and eventually quitting or getting fired ( which is the uncalculated part of the equation). Could also call this quietly getting fired, since they can fired you on the spot but you're required a 2 weeks notice so why not just quitting? I guess life's hard

Don't kid yourself! Working harder just means the company expects more from you. They aren't going to reward you for that work, they will just expect it from you all the time. When companies go through a short staffing problem and you double down to make it work, all the higher ups see is that it works. This discourages them from fixing the problem and creates a new normal. Sometimes you have to let it fail or you work yourself into exhaustion and keep the company from creating a sustainable system.

As a teacher, I feel that I found the career that I could stick with until retirement....or so I thought. I love teaching. I hate the endless and useless paperwork and meetings that go along with it. It drains me enough to want to quit. After dealing with other people's naughty kids all day, the last thing I want to do is more work. Most teachers do this. I don't. After the 2nd year, I just quit taking the work home. This is my version of quiet quitting. I also do not volunteer to do anything else, if asked. It makes me look like I am "not a team player", but I don't care. I want my sanity. Last year, I also stopped filling out said paperwork, except the paperwork that I "might get sued" if I don't fill it out. I turned it all in way after the deadlines, last year, and had no repercussions that I was awaiting! So, this year, I will do that again. Because if you are not going to even look at it, why am I spending hours of MY time doing it?? The only thing that should matter is that the students in my class are learning.

When you go above and beyond at work--they then expect it all the time. They demand it and aren't grateful. They act as if it's your job to do certain things because you went above your job description to help your company. This is why, sometimes you only do the job you're expected to do and don't go above and beyond. But this "Quiet Quitting" seems like the lazy people that surround you at work--that forces others to do more (go above and beyond). Your boss expects less from them and more from you. It's a never ending circle of unfairness at work.

    • @SL-lz9jr
      @SL-lz9jr 2 года назад

Sounds like you just need to get on the same page as those lazy people then everyone is putting in the same amount of work. The sword cuts both ways too. I once advised a man I was dating that he needed to slow down his productivity or management would start to question his peers for not catching up to his level. Which can happen sometimes when management is trying to assess what is considered "feasible" and "normal". I once had a manager ask me how many minutes it took me to complete certain tasks (it was a transactional, task-based, time-sensitive job, so every minute actually counted). I could tell they were trying to figure out which employees were slow and which were fast. It can go both ways. Management may simply expect the fast ones to continue at breakneck pace or they may start to fire the slow ones for not being fast enough. The point is, we're all worker bees and we shouldn't be against one another. I used to burn myself out into fevers every few months. No way was that normal. I never got sick. No other symptoms. Just lots of fevers from being burnt out. Eventually I quit that job. I kept getting stuck at jobs that required high performance for low wage. Finally I found my way out of those types of jobs into jobs that were more meaningful and more project-based (which is my happy place) and ever since the pandemic and after being laid off a few times (no fault of my own), I learned to be less of a worker bee. I do what I can do in the time allotted. I refuse to do free labor (if you're salaried, anything over 40 hours a week is free labor in my book) and now that I'm hourly I agree to do overtime once in a while to be a team player and get the job done during busy seasons, but I set the tone with my manager and CEO that this is not to be expected of me on a regular basis. And whenever I can I always push back on deadlines. My current role and current industry isn't life or death. Most jobs aren't life or death, which means most deadlines are man-made, which means it's perfectly reasonable to push back on deadlines that are impossible. I'm lucky that I work for a place that understands work/life balance. Now, they still have a long way to go towards achieving that and some of my colleagues struggle to find their voice to set those boundaries up for themselves, but I learned I can do excellent work at 40 hours a week and not have to give more of myself to my job. I'm still well respected for my expertise and knowledge. My managers still root for me to succeed. Honestly, it sounds like managers need to stop treating their employees like a cash cow and instead start treating them like human beings with purpose and life.

I found my calling, so I found my purpose. Because of the workforce labor shortage, and me working in a labor environment, it can be easy to get burnt out
To younger people in their mid 20s like myself, just a couple years ago we were “all about the grind” and “paper chasing”. We’ve seen recently that chasing that paper and working extremely long shifts for a fat paycheck just isn’t worth it. I absolutely support this trend and I’m 59 years old.
My scenario: I’ve been working for my current company for 25 years and in my current title for 5 years with no promotion, working above and beyond my official work capacity and mostly self-trained.
In May of this year, my employer decided to promote a same-titled person ABOVE me who had been employed less than 2 years to learn my job. I filed a grievance to get my own promotion and was denied and the promoted employee lost their promotion. So now the company has 2 very pissed off employees.
Quiet quitting is the only way to go - with “quitting” meaning I quit working above my title and the anxiety it causes. I refuse to work myself into an early grave for a job I don’t care about.
The upside to this, I’m retiring in 66 days and have been asked by three separate supervisors to stay. My ability to say, “Hell, no” is very nice.

Thanks for the opportunity to share my experience with quiet quitting! One thing that I think is important to add is whether or not this is sustainable long-term. My purpose in quiet quitting wasn't to just coast indefinitely in a career I wasn't happy with. It was to allow myself the time and energy AFTER my 9-5 hours to work on my side hustles and to take aligned action towards building my OWN streams of income. Once I had enough money saved up to give me runway, I quit fully. Younger generations are seeing the opportunity to make their own sources of income online (notice the other interviewee was a "freelance writer" and I am a "freelance virtual assistant & RUclipsr"). Lastly, in my opinion, burnout is a reflection of the MISALIGNMENT someone is feeling from their current career and not always just a result of being "over worked".

I literally just spent 36 hours awake to take care of my job on a weekend.
    - I got up at 9am on a saturday,
    - Had half the day to myself (which was really just planning/preparing for the trip),
    - drove to a remote facility (4hrs travel, left at 3pm)
    - got checked in at a hotel and grabbed a bite to eat
    - started working - expected time to be ~3hrs
    - 18 hours later (3pm the next day) after things did NOT go to plan, I get the opportunity to close up and head home
    - 4hrs drive back, 15 minute nap in a parking lot along the way
    - now 9PM on Sunday, I go to bed and get to login the next day like nothing happened.
I volunteered to do this task. I stuck with it because it needed to get done and I take pride in making sure that before I ever take my hands off of it that things are operating well. That's on me and I own it.
But this is far from the first time this kind of thing has come up, and through my many years of time with this company it is absolutely the norm that I would be expected to be at work the next day. And I was.
My manager talked to me and we've arranged for me to have a comp day off at the end of the week but that was AFTER I was already logged back in and doing normal tasks on the Monday after having spent 18hrs working a problem, 24hrs dedicated to work, and 36hrs awake. Kudos to my manager for being a good human being but that is a power granted to him by the company while the expectation by the company towards me is that this needs to happen, you get it done, and then 'good job, see you on Monday' is the 100% normal reality.
American work culture is toxic. You get hired and have a literal contract (if you're lucky) saying 'I will do XYZ work during ABC hours for 123 in compensation' and then the employers make it a habit of encouraging you to go 'above and beyond', that '150% spirit' and all you get is a handshake, pat on the back, other zero value gesture in return for VERY REAL value of time spent from your life doing MORE than the agreed amount. And that MORE becomes the new normal - without compensation, I might add. So when you get burned out by this cycle of behavior and choose to stick to exactly what you're getting paid for - by signed agreement - you are sneered at and threatened with replacement because you're 'doing the bare minimum to not get fired'.
And this is the accepted viewpoint because clearly the employer, media, and wealthy 'go getters' are always right. 'work life boundary' is a dirty word to a lot of places, but it stems from abuse - and it's not the employees that are the abusers here, it's the employers.
It's irritating to watch smiling laughing morning show hosts 'ha ha, if we did that we wouldn't be here, would we?', dismissing and forgiving their own employers and the likes of that across the board for having the attitude that 'you didn't give me more than we agreed to' is acceptable grounds for being replaced at work.

RIGHT. It's so easy for people who found "success" in their roles to then make a mockery of the fact that statistically speaking we can't all be "at the top" of our game in our respective roles/industries.
I find that those of us who take pride in our work and are willing to roll up our sleeves to get the job done are usually the ones who get taken advantage of by a company.
I don't really do that anymore. I do that for managers who I genuinely have a connection with or a friendship outside of work. The rare few I feel some loyalty to. The rest won't get that level of commitment from me anymore. I do excellent work but I'll keep it at 40 hours a week thank you very much.

The government was trying to get people back to work using inflation (housing, gas & food), but all that did was force people to move in with family members. When people aren’t on their own, they have less expenses and therefore contribute even less to the economy. Having less bills has freed people up to just Uber, Lift or Grub Hub for a few hours a day AND THAT IS WHAT JOBS ARE COMPETING WITH NOT FOOD, GAS AND HOUSING PRICES!
What needs to happen can never happen in a capitalist society because capitalism means “to capitalize” on everything! They cannot ever force people who have woken up to go back to the treadmills of life asleep from themselves.
People are seeking balance, fulfillment and peace! The only thing to do is restructure society with workplaces that offer work-from-home options, change to a 4 day work-week with shorter shifts, and convert to a 20-30 hour work week that pays above the living wage!
Society would find that people are actually more productive when they have work-life balance, joy and peace! But happiness at work, overall joy with living and peace belong to God! While we are in this transition, the world that has passed away must be completely consumed before balance can be fully realized for all who are left… Seek God and keep praying people! We are almost there!!! ❤️

I just refuse to give my all(time and energy) to a company that I know doesn’t care about me and beyond getting my pay, benefits, and job done (and I don’t expect or want them to care about more). If I’m going to do that, then I’m going to do it for myself.

i don't like the term 'quiet quitting'. doesnt make sense. I feel like someone is trying to invent a new term to describe employee burnout to focusing on some self care and rebalancing your life by setting boundaries. These are healthy things to do. Just because someone doesn't respond to emails at night and on the weekend doesn't mean they are giving less at their job.

If you want 110% on the job then you better pay over time, which you won't so you're just gonna get 8 hours then.

"Be a problem solver. How can you fulfill all the obligations to the company while fulfilling the obligations to yourself"...she is so out of touch with reality, which is where if you do everything you're asked, what do you get rewarded with? More work.

You should get paid for your work, period. It's a job, not your life. Real talk, thank you for sharing your privilege. You sound like an advertisement for corporations.

Don’t waste your time quiet quitting, quit and go pursue a career you love. Your self esteem and mental health will thank you. It is possible to be successful and not kill yourself working. Working hard is not really what’s needed, prioritize your time and focus on what’s really important at work and you should be fine, no need to “coast”.

This works in the US because the present economic environment favors the worker. If you tried "quiet quitting" in Japan, you would either be fired or disgraced. Expectations are different in Japan. But, hey, if it works in your country, go for it.

There's no such thing as a " quiet quit" . Do your job and go home/log off. Because most states are " at will " and they will let you go if you're not performing well.

No, it’s about only doing what your job contract requires you to do. It’s about not overworking. It’s giving yourself a healthy work/life balance and setting personal boundaries.

Did you watch the video. You’re still doing your job, you’re just doing what you’re required to do and nothing more. Going through extra mile at work is rarely beneficial in the long run.

I appreciate her mentioning that “quiet quitting” isn’t for Everyone me the pros and cons of that. Along with pointing out how extra effort extra time and investment is needed for advancement.

Perhaps companies should have considered hiring enough people to do the work when people were willing to do the jobs that should have been filled. Instead, companies wanted to save money and put the work load of five people on one person. and quite often that person wasn't even full time or got benefits and when they spoke up about they were treated like shit. Maybe we're seeing a point where most people have had to work under those conditions and have finally had enough.

I started just doing the minimum when i got tired of fixing up other people's problems and taking on extra responsibilities in the Hope's of getting that promotion or raise I wanted at my new job. I got extraordinary remarks from my supervisor in regards to my one year performance but was told I was only going to get a 2% raise because other people, who didnt contribute nearly as much as me, where getting paid less. I was also told by my supervisor that they had to rate me as an average performer due to "company policy" (whatever the Fu*k that means) despite him acknowledging I was a high performer.
