Constitution Day - September 17th - a feature film dramatization of the events of the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Produced by Brigham Young University to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the drafting of the United States Constitution, and many professors from BYU's School of Fine Arts and Communications were involved in its production either as actors or in other capacities. After its release, the film was officially recognized by the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution.
The movie was filmed on location at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, in Williamsburg, Virginia, and at other historical sites. Much of the film is shot from the viewpoint of James Madison, with the script being based primarily on his writings. These include the copious minutes he took during the Constitutional Convention, which were published as Notes of Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787.

I watch this for a renewal of my faith in humanity and my American heritage
I watched this in High School civics in 1993... I always had a crush on the Benjamin Franklin actor and have been searching for this film for over 30 years. I can finally rest easy. Thank you.

Today's law enforcement infringes on our country rights. Global powers are trying to find a way to weaken our country. This is the greatest country on the face of the planet. We are not perfect by any means. We are trying to form a more perfect union.
If education standards were higher and taught important subjects (math, history, English, civics, the sciences) instead of being ideology driven indoctrination camps brainwashing our youth, this nation could get back on a patriotic path towards the future. As it stands, we've got so many uneducated people that believe it is more important to willingly surrender our rights and replace them with oppression we're asking for. Just a little adjustment here and a trim there and before we know what hit us... we'll be more like china than china is (we Americans don't like being outdone and we don't like being shown facts that contradict our beliefs because we don't like researching stuff...takes too long).

This movie is straight up nostalgia for me. I'm 25 but I probably watched this movie three times in school over the years. It's honestly a really good movie with great acting.
Same for me! I get nostalgic over it every single time. I'm also 25, and I've seen this countless times over the years growing up, for learning purposes and for enjoyment. It is indeed a very well acted and very informative film. I recommend it often.

I used this movie in my American HIstory AP classes. It's an impressive presentation bringing to life the personalities and issues which shaped the framing of the Constitution, and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about this era.

Fun fact. At BYU (where this movie was made) they had (and still do have) a very low population of black students. And none of them wanted to participate in filming. So those two slaves in the beginning are actually played by white students in blackface.

The best movie on the Constitutional Convention. While they had to make compromises that most people today does not bother to understand why they made them (like equal representation of States in the Senate) or compromises that seem inhuman to us (like tolerating the institution of Southern Slavery), they forged a Constitution that served our country well and outlived even their wildest expectations. Happy Constitution Day.
@GG The US has woefully taught it's children for 3 generations and is now paying the price. The nation is racing away from God, and is paying the price. For those who don't believe in God, they should be able to still see that a people united in a God that appeals to people to be kind each other and not cheat or kill each other is far better than a society without such a belief system.

Another gem from Lionheart. I must say, this one was something special. There is historical dialogue in here that is very rare in books and film. One could see from the comments too, that there are some very learned people out there. This is good. American state-craft has been in a league of its own since it's foundation. When I began my full-time study of everything American history, it was from the simple fact that I wanted to discover and understand how America went from being a new nation to the world's greatest power. While Rome wasn't built in a day; comparatively speaking, America just needed an afternoon.
I am watching this, for a second time, because as Americans we need to remind ourselves of our unique place in the world's history, and of the great American experiment. It has served us well for over 240 years. And the absolute beauty of our system of government, although imperfect at many times, is it's ability to adapt through slow and measured change. And while the men who created it were by no means perfect in virtue, they understood that a lasting government must have a system to embrace change. No other nation on earth has ever achieved what the United States of America has. There are pale imitations , but they never seem to get it just right. America has, and will continue to do so as long as Americans hold on to the basic values of liberty and the rule of law that have served us so well.

For the beginnings of our American history these Lionheart productions can't be beat! The shape our country is in today with so many new immigrants and as a retired teacher these should be shown in classrooms. Kids love movies in school. They think they're getting away from work but pick up more from a good flick than they'll realize - even the horsewoman passing by at 5:47 on side saddle. Nice inclusion 😅

If the founding fathers could have possibly gone forward in time, to watch themselves portrayed, they surely would have been astonished with this and other documentaries/productions, over the centuries,and how anachronisms and public opinion at the time affects the dialogue. By the 80s the slave ownership by some founding fathers was lightly touched upon. Most of them, even the slave owners worked very hard to abolish.
It does have a hypocritical ring no matter what. Kind of like modern day floundering fathers flying to global warming conventions in private jet planes.

Big difference. At the beginning of the 18th century, slavery was just the way of the world, "a necessary evil," like death and taxes. And, viewed realistically, it was a necessary component of civilizations prior to the Industrial Revolution. But the global warming "crisis" is exaggerated, and not really established in the discourse of uncensored science (censored science isn't really science-- it's politics disguised by selective presentation of some scientists' biased opinions). Climate activists today are many times more hypocritical than educated slave owners in the 18th century. The latter at least had some sense that they were walking a tightrope with being on the wrong side of history. Climate activists today are like an arcane, perverse zombie-cult.
Not quite as fun as 1776 (released 1972), but a decent follow up for sure. It would have been amazing to have the same actors come back from 1776 to reprise their roles, especially since the aging would have been really close to real life. Oh well. I am greatly impressed with this as an unofficial sequel to 1776. Really a good watch.
For those who haven't seen 1776, it's a great watch and introduces the characters (real people) in far greater details, especially Dickinson.
It's a forgettable musical that has ridiculous over acting throughout. Pretty much why it's been forgotten by most. As a history buff it is almost impossible to watch , let alone take serious.
@@chadmiller2224 It/s not forgettable at all, for those who are lucky enough to have seen it. It's been redone as a play several times with top cast members and the songs get good view counts on youtube. That it has had several length versions over the years made it a mess, like all other movies that have had the same fate (Bladerunner being another), the 3 hour version is the best, since it keeps all the parts but a tiny few in.
As for the history, the writer took the words almost word for word, if not word for word from the autobiographies of several of the characters so I have no idea why you can't take it serious.

Excellent film ! I learnt a great deal by watching it. My interest in the idea for the urgent need of a written Constitution for the Holy Land inspired me to find this film.

The people may protest when they feel betrayed or unsatisfied but what they are really protesting in a republic is the tenant,representatives or elected officials not the institutions i.e, the presidency,congress and the courts

the United Kingdom Needs it's own Constitutional Convention with a better form of government like us Proportional Representation by population which would make it more fair and not possibly crooked.
One question if Proportional Representation was Introduced in the USA would the large states actually control the government and which large state would be more powerful and would the large states all work together or not?
The states with the largest populations would vary on the political results, but the Senate’s purpose is primarily to represent the states as equals and also represent interests of the state legislatures. Since legislatures are forwarding the people’s voice from the states, it can be said that it is a cooler form of consideration by the people.

I hate, HATE how modern schools gloss over this fact that multiple times Founders heavily debated slavery, and only kept it only to keep the South from seceding (Leading to an incredibly weak nation at a time many mighty old powers drooling to rule them), as they required slaves to harvest cash crops. Yes, George Washington and others owned slaves, and it's disgusting that people aka SHEEPLE, were fully willing to abolish slavery even as they owned them, willing to pass a law AND SET THEIR OWN SLAVES FREE!!! Having to pay them like normal workers, as I am sure they still did anyways but weren't required to.
when you say Sheeple are you referring modern people who aren't aware of the situation, and the desire to end it, or the people back then who still owned slaves even though they wanted to end slavery as the current context would suggest?

The scene 1:42:32 was very powerful. Because George Washington the president of the United States has agreed to sign. He said "What remains for us to do is sign. This is for me a great moment. I've prayed for it. And I will continue to pray for the success of this document. For I believe it to be the hope of this country". Though George Washington didn't agree to be president of the United States, he became. It was a very powerful scene. As George Washington agreed not for the sake of a richest life, but for a country. Americans should watch it. It gives power to every American citizen. Americans should thank these great men. Thanks to you all mainly George Washington,James Madison and Benjamin Franklin. Without you 3 people this convention wasn't successful.

I live in Florida and this idiot governor refuses healthcare money that our people desperately need.
@@J.B24 Such an act would liquidate all of the states’ power and give it to the federal government, and would compromise not only the 10th amendment but our whole nation’s foundation as a republic! The states were not meant to be subject to the Federal Government; namely, they were to have more power than it. Removing power from the states and the people would be a road to tyranny.

You left out the history of borrowing the structure of the constitution from the Iroquois Confederation, the Great Law of Peace, a natural and spiritual democracy that was founded in August, 1142 based on all the voices of the people through consensus. The difference is that the Declaration of Independence should of been the preamble of the constitution, but was pushed to the side. They left out women’s rights, children’s rights, and Mother Earth rights which was the Iroquois Constitution. But instead the USA Constitution was based on property rights and only land owner could vote. The US constitution was created to bring in a new type of a economy, an extraction economy that benefited the white Aristocratic land owners only. And to do this, they created a political party system to keep the people divided and stolen the voice of the people. A vote is not a voice. In time this constitution will blow up on itself and go full circle back to the spiritual democracy of consensus of the Great Law of Peace!
The Iroquois Constitution, as you have put it, seems to be based on natural law. The constitution, too, is based on natural law. Therefore, the constitution isn’t necessarily a derivative of the Iroquois constitution but more of a derivative of the same principles that the Iroquois Constitution is a derivative of, and thus both integrate to being supportive of the fundamental rights of mankind.
I should also mention that property rights mean more than just landowning. In essence, life and liberty are equivalent to property in a way, for without property life and liberty have no use.
I understand that you may have rage towards many people for atrocities of long times past, but I am certain that the founders wrote the constitution out of goodwill and only meant the best for both peoples. The atrocities are representative of the frailties of some of the people in that time, not the people as a whole.

UK should have a proportional Representation parliament and way of electing our mps instead of the crappy first past the post system and we should have an elected house of lords (senate) and the point i am making is that the us government does not have full proportional representation to have a full representative government then i pray that it will be a government fit for the 21st century United Kingdom, and maybe a devolved Parliament in the North of England where I am from so like you americans we probably need a constitutional convention as well like you yanks did be lets hope ours would be perfect and try to fix the UK union so that nationalists in wales, northern ireland and scotland will not break up our union that has for centuries built sweated and bled together, oh and p.s i have welsh, cornish, irish and possibly scottish ancestry so i would feel betrayed and hurt if the union is broken up, i pray it will not.
I talked to a member of the House of Lords and he told me they really have no power they just blather in their get togethers. That surprised me, as I thought they were like the US Senate but if they hold no power, then they are nothing like the Senate.

Terms often have several meanings and different usages during different times in history. You are using Proportional Representation whereby different political parties receive a number of seats that is proportional to the relative vote each party got in the most recent election. I think America should adopt such a system. But Proportional meant relative to the size of population each state had in that day and age, and is the meaning Madison attributes to the word in the movie.
