Sohyang is actually more well known than Dimash in the western mainstream. Dimash is the king of reactorsphere, but he hasnt broke through to the mainstream in western countries yet. He's big in Russia, Kazakhstan and China, but most people in the US will have never heard of him.
Her voice isn't tense tho. Almost at all, really. It's not muscle tension, it's compression. She mentioned this before. Besides, she uses a brighter sound than usual here. SoHyang has a new technical surprise in every performance. You should react to Arirang or Everyone.
@@bbwng54 most of these vocal coaches on RUclips can't even sing the only two vocal coaches on RUclips that can really sing that i saw natalie weiss and tara simon the rest are alright i guess everybody can be a vocal coach on RUclips how are you a vocal coach but can't sing
You guys pointed out the tension and "muscle" in her singing quite a few times and you're actually spot on! When Sohyang was giving a lecture at a music university, she spoke about how she planned this Bridge Over Troubled Water performance. She specifically mentioned that the "sound" she was aiming for was a constricted sound. Which was why she already had a lowered larynx by the second verse, and from then on she just carried the weight from her lowered larynx position up to her higher range. Hence, the heavy, desperate, muscley constricted sound. If you watch her rehearsal videos, you would know that Sohyang can breathe out a resonant mixed A5 note without preparation and with freedom in her throat and muscle. The tension in this performance is totally intentional to achieve the wanted emotional impact. That is why Sohyang is a one of a kind singer. She is flexible to choose any one of her vocal colours for each performance depending on the lyrics/genre/message.
This is physiologically inaccurate. She did not deliberately implement throat muscle tension to imitate a constricted sound. When she explained this at Baeksuk she specifically used a Korean word which translates to "compression" which is (possibly coincidentally) the same word used in English to desrcibe this. She is essentially allowing slight extrinsic laryngeal muscle tightening to distort the sound in this way. Using the words "constriction" and "throat tension" is definitely not what I would go for Regardless, she did NOT achieve this compressed sound by carrying a lower larynx position high up in the mix. That's not how this works. Please correct your comment.
@@MariosPOS I understand there might be some shades of interpretation with translation but us and the OP are allowed to have our opinions. You talked about “muscle tightening” to us that is literally tension. You are also allowed to have your opinion, but to treat your opinion as fact and demand that other commenters change their comments to please your outlook is very close-minded. If you would like to engage with people, try to do it in a way that allows for discussion.
@@ChaseandMelia I agree that I came off unnecessarily combative and that's definitely a very poor look. I asked them to edit their comment because I knew you guys would read it at some point and I wanted to avoid you reading something that misinterprets her words. However, I do have to point out that I disagree with grouping (healthy) vocal distortion or compression in the same category as unintentional extrinsic throat/neck muscle tension or laryngeal muscle tension. One is a deliberate stylistic choice that involves the vocal folds & cords while the latter is the result of either improper diaphragmatic engagement and airflow control and/or the result of the singer's inability to "free" and "open up" their sound. But i do agree that there is room for misinterpretation. I apologize for sounding mean, that wasn't at all my intention especially since I actually loved your guys' reaction and subscribed.
I loved how the video started off with lots of pauses, going back, talking technical stuff but then halfway it was like. screw it, we're just going to watch, get chills and be amazed.
Luv this duo vocal coach reaction... as always, vocal coaches appreciate & be amazed with her performances... pls react more Sohyang's performance... thks😁
She is the BEST female singer in the world..... Also she teaches music and voice at the University of South Korea. She is a Master Vocalist, and she does her own arrangements.
I watched Sohyang teaching a young girl to sing a particular song & in one part she actually put the girls hand on her stomach while she sang the same phrase over & over again with different intensity to explain about breath support etc, which is what you’ve just been saying about her singing with her whole body, I mean Sohyang has to get the power from somewhere because she’s only petite. I agree that if you 1st master your technique you can then concentrate on emotion & believe me,when it comes to emotion & telling a story through a song, she is definitely at the top. Not only does she reduce me to tears sometimes when singing in English & I understand the lyrics, she also can have that effect on me when she’s singing in her native korean & I don’t understand a word, HOW does that happen? But it is true that the better you are technically, the easier you are able to adapt to different genre’s & varying degrees of emotion.?her impeccable technique allows her to basically sing anything, pop,rock,blues/jazz,obv the power ballads & she can even be heard rapping in a song called ‘day day’, but her heart lies with gospel & elements of gospel can often be seen in her arrangements, even those songs that you wouldn’t normally associate with that genre ( sohyang is responsible for the arrangement of all the songs she performs. She will always make the song her own when she’s doing a cover, sometimes changing it so much it’s only just recognisable & at other times changing it very little, depending on the song & the circumstances she is singing it in but she is always respectful of the original & never just changes it for the sake of changing it, she will only make changes that will enhance the song & make it better, as she see’s it anyway). If you really want someone to ‘take you to church’ the Sohyang is your girl & I highly recommend her song ‘everyone’, again from the ‘immortal songs’ series, 7.5 mins of belting heaven. Sohyang herself has said that this was the hardest song for her to sing, simply because of a lack of places to breathe, which I’m sure the both of you will be able to empathise with, rather than a non singer like myself. Great reaction guys, I’m not a singer or a musician & I like watching people explain why Sohyang makes us feel like we do. I suppose it’s easy for someone like me to be impressed by her vocal ability but she often gives people like yourselves, who know what they’re talking about, goosebumps too, which gives me an idea of just how good she is. Finally, I would advise you to read up on her back story which, along with other things, will help explain why she is not a household name all over the world, something that amazing voice of hers surely warrants!!
I also remember that video. The young girl was from Myanmar and So Hyang took her under her wing like she was her younger sister! She seems to genuinely care about everyone she meets. 💖
@@kk-hr9ls OK, I found a short part of the video, though I think there is a longer one. You can ask on the Facebook So Hyang fan club page as there are some people who know a LOT on that web page! ruclips.net/video/34jIg8Vek7A/видео.html
I'm a 79 year old retired singer/musician/performer/teacher, and I love you guys. I understand your emphasis on technique and healthy/unhealthy singing. Even though I'm more of a balance between technique and emotion in singing performance, I do believe that your approach can help young singers get and stay on a good track. Your also a cute young couple with great passion for music. I have been a fan of So Hyang for many years and highly admire and respect her 20 year career and legendary/iconic status in South Korea and other parts of the world. You will not find an artiist more seriously dedicated to her art & craft or as deeply passionate about her artistic message. She's also a beautiful human being.
I don't think you guys will ever find a singer with a more tensionless mixed voice than SoHyang... It's not extrinsic muscle tension that you're hearing, it's a mixture of twang, compression and frontal placement. The facial expressions are deliberate, for emotive purposes. The compression that makes it sound slightly tighter is also deliberate. She gave a lecture a Baeksuk university where she said the compression was a stylistic choice, specifically for this performance. Sincerely, you guys haven't heard anything yet by her, you are in for some big treats. From an objective, purely scientific, pedagogical standpoint, she's undoubtedly a once in a lifetime vocalist, especially in her mix. I recommend her rendition of "everyone"
@@robertmyers7383 That's nonsense... Most Morisette fans don't really care to talk badly about SoHyang just as most SoHyang fans don't care to talk badly about Morisette. Melia and Chase had great things to say about SoHyang here. And an easily misconstruable comment about muscle tension doesn't mean they're willingly negative towards SoHyang. Don't focus on the trolls my dude.
Most of Sohyang's reactions have something in common. Initially, the evaluation of the song. In the middle,'Yeah. good at singing.' In the last part, she sings so well that she doesn't evaluate it and just listens.
Thank you for a great reaction and analysis. A warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. She is a ccm/gospel singer, devout Christian, cancer survivor and one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet. She is an independent artist with no social media, who has turned down many offers from the big labels over the years (including from Sony last year). She says that her goal is to use her voice in order to bring comfort to people going through difficult times. Take the journey, as what you witnessed is just the tip of the iceberg. Check out her rendition of Arirang Alone next, from Immortal Songs 2.
I always love it when voice experts dissect Dimash and Sohyang, and usually they start off so technical, and there's a point when they stop analysing and just start enjoying. In your case was when you got chills. Analyse her 'Everyone' one of these days. You won't be disappointed. It's her most epic performance ever.
There’s nothing wrong with intentionally being breathy for an emotional impact. Especially if the person proves that they can go in and out of that. You just don’t want to overdo it.
Agreed, it is sometimes tough to balance though with having a 1hr concert, that breathy voice can wear you out! But she has proven that she knows how to pace her set 😎
@@ChaseandMelia While I, like most, find her "epic" performances incredibly impressive. I am particularly fond of her stripped-down appearances on 'Begin Again'. I think you might gain an even stronger admiration for her talents. I would suggest 'If I Ain't Got You', 'Love Poem', or 'Stay'. They are unearthly in their delicate beauty.
We were all waiting for the chills LOL! Sohyang is one of the great vocal technicians around at the moment. She doesn't really free-wheel her songs. Everything is thought out, scripted, and drilled. She is a wonder...because she can put everything into every song she does after working out all the points.

She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world. But She wasn't known as well as popular because She sing for GOD and Comfort people who has hardtime Not for fame or money. ..In her youth, she turned down all offers from mega agencies for her beliefs...and now she is 43years old. .She has so many legendary live performances . She always sings with sincerity whenever and wherever. So it comforts those who listen to her song...That's why I love her...And her singing skills are the best, not to mention... We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RUclips. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late 2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.) Here is the interview where So Hyang related the events: ruclips.net/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/видео.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster and the rest watched on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/видео.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ruclips.net/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/видео.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that So Hyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RUclips, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick! OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ruclips.net/video/VnPAkryrygQ/видео.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Though she is less than 5' 4" and probably not even 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and it is important to note that as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
Great Reaction! For our Queen Sohyang! She shows so much emotions(her hand gestures, smiling when singing,)has the most "Feels"(The chills you mentioned..lots of goosebumps...some even shed a tear or two),, when she uses he angelic heavenly voice instrument to help us all heal.... Especially during these surreal strange times! She sings not for fame(turned down numerous huge offers) but to comfort all her many wonderful world wide fans.. Next: "Lean on me" "You Raise me up" "Arirang Alone" etc. etc... and her masterpiece,, "Everyone" an absolute MUST to have the english lyrics!!!! Stay Safe from Hawaii!!!😁😁😁 PS: Her background vocalists & orchestra also enhance her mesmerizing performances!
She is way beyond the point where she has to think/worry about the technical stuff. Like a master painter, she just uses them to paint the color and texture of her voice as she sees fit. If you want to see a truly insane technical display, listen to 'Everyone' which is 7 minutes of a non-stop vocal/emotional rollercoaster. "You Raise Me up' is another epic performance that will give you chills all over.
You NEED to react to her singing Arirang Alone. It’s a Korean “folk” song that describes the hope that someday North and South Korea will one day reunite. It’s an emotionally powerful, technically lovely performance.
Love the reaction! Yup welcome to the Sohyang world! Where tons say she’s the Queen and Dimash is the King. Sohyang is by far the best to me! Her total package of talent, skills that go well beyond vocals, beautiful background life story, and most of all, what she stands for. She does all her own arrangements. She also has many more songs. Rap, Pop, Jazz, Rock, and of course her wheel house, gospel. Mahalo and Aloha from Hawaii! 🤙
y'all don't have to apologize for in depth analysis. there are plenty of basic reaction channels if that's not what people are looking for. i don't think i've heard nearly this much analysis from anyone else. it's quite interesting, even for a neophyte such as myself. it definitely helps y'all stand out. :)
Thanks! We're certainly learning that we don't fall in line with the traditional react video, but we still feel like we have a place and purpose here! So glad you found it interesting, welcome to the channel!
@@ChaseandMelia thanks. just curious, do either of you ever feel like your expert knowledge of singing gets in the way of your enjoyment of performances? do you think your personal preferences for a more 'correct' full cord closure rather than breathy tone have been shaped by what you've learned as correct technique? and are there any singers you could point to that you think do everything right in terms of technical performance? or is it more like, as i suspect, that every performer has things to overcome and compensate for during each performance, and they just get better at that, rather than achieving some state of 'perfection'?
You are probably right that our knowledge definitely gets in the way for us. We definitely listen to music differently because we're trained. But I think we enjoy different things about music! Key changes and interesting melodies make us want to practice more and try new techniques! Your final point is really what its all about for us. Its definitely not about being perfect, its about using your instrument well so that you can move people. From a performers perspective its about balancing the emotion with the technical, you want to make people cry but if you scream every song your voice will be shot by the fifth song in the set. These are great questions! Thanks for being a part of the community!
Thank you for the entertaining reaction video. You guys are indeed very much focused on the technical aspects of singing but I enjoy your enthusiasm and passion about singing. Also I appreciate your remain open-minded on the differences in stylistic choices in spite of personal preference. Glad to listen to your discussion on how technical proficiency allows the singer to have more artistic freedom and choices in the genre or musical expression they use. Your observation on her use of her full body to generate the formidable power is also very pointed. Someone described Sohyang as a full-body singer for similar reasons. Sohyang had to exert a lot of energy for this performance even though she made it appear effortless on stage. When in the backstage, she showed the camera how drained she was and how much her hands were shaking afterwards. As a layman to vocal study, I find Sohyang's breathy tone tremendously moving and her belting awe-inspiring. Ultimately the performance simply leaves me an indelible impression of how I felt about myself afterwards. As you noted, there are plenty of fantastic performances on line for us to enjoy and hope to see you visit Sohyang soon.
Yes! I remember the original video they put on RUclips of this song and she went backstage afterwards and basically collapsed into an easy chair. She was pretty much wiped out from all the effort and emotion she poured into the performance. Personally, I think this _must_ be one of the best performances ever given by anyone at any time in this world's history! 😉👌😎
@@ToddSauve I saw this episode of Immortal Song 2 shortly after I ran into this video. I cannot quarrel with your characterization of this performance. As I commented many times, this is the first performance I saw from Sohyang. I was stunned for days (or years) and became her fan ever since.
@@yukuolee3740 It was the first So Hyang song I ever watched on RUclips too! She reduced me to tears immediately--and I was 61 at the time! In fact, I watched it at least a dozen times in a row and then the right side of my abdomen started to ache. And man did it hurt! And it wouldn't go away. Then I remembered that the Chinese believe your liver is the seat of human emotions, as opposed to the Western world believing it is your heart. So maybe it was my liver responding to all the emotions So Hyang was evoking in me. Anyway, after watching it for about the fortieth time my side stopped aching. Thank goodness! She is almost like a narcotic that you can't stop feeding yourself until you either go into orbit or croak!
@@ToddSauve Reading your experience gives me the deja vu feeling, although you have about eight years on me. I can fully appreciate your reaction. I must confess I didn't experience any liver complication in spite of my Chinese heritage but was simply dazed and confused about the sorry state I was in. It took a full weekend to recover. I was emotionally drained but mentally grateful for a near spiritual cleansing. This kind of narcotic doesn't simply lead to physiological addiction but fuses with one's soul.
@@yukuolee3740 That is the thing about So Hyang! She _never_ gets tiring to listen to! I've never had that experience with any other singer!
I’m not a singer and I really don’t know what you are talking about, but regardlessly SOHYANG brings me to tears all the times and has soothe my soul plenty of times.
Her studio version “Amazing Grace” will be the best text for people who wants to know how to sing, I think! Welcome to Sohyang’s amazing journey! I absolutely enjoyed your reaction 😃
Thank you... We sincerely welcome you to the world of Sohyang's music. Sohyang’s song always seems to play a role in our hearts. Sohyang’s song seems to be heard more often with the heart rather than with the ear. I would also like you to comment on Sohyang's other songs. "you raise me up", "Lean on me", "Power of love", "Arirang alone", "I will always love", "Everyone", "I have nothing", "Where are you", "Monalisa" , "Hug me", "Dear love", "Wind song" etc...
As a korean girl, I recommend korean traditional song "Arirang alone(홀로 아리랑)" sung by Sohyang at the same TV show in this video. This song is originally traditional song, but arranged. This song is more dramatic and smoother than original song. So it'll be easy to access tthe song. But you need to know it is not just easy to access but also very very very beautiful.
I love every time you guys stop to talk and I get even happier when she wants to rewind. You guys’ chemistry is unmatched and it shows not even halfway through this video. I cannot wait to experience you guys listen to the amazing vocalist that await in these reactions. Cheers! Definitely subscribing.
So Hyang's singing is impeccable as is her faith! I hope, as worship leaders you will take a look at 4th Impact's powerful version of Kutlass' What Faith Can Do!! They also made a video of So Hyang's version of Bridge over troubled water in 4 part harmony as a tribute to the frontliners who put their lives on the line daily during the pandemic. It is spectacular. I will leave the links below.
Ultimately, it is not about whether airy, breathy voice sounds better than belty mix voice or not; it is about trying to tell a story and/or message using a song. Sohyang is conveying an emotional story. In the beginning of the song, she wants to convey a certain closeness and intimacy to the audience and therefore the soft, airy and breathiness works best in that situation. As the song continues on, she need to convey deeper emotion in her story telling and started to do more chest and mix voice to create a memorable impact. Sohyang is a phenomenal singer; but she is also an incredible story teller. Interestingly, she also happens to be the author of a couple fantasy novels and able to speak in five different languages that I am aware of. Super talented human being.
I appreciate your take on this performance. Please react to more of Sohyang! She is honestly one of my favorite singers in the world. Sohyang is not only a really talented and experienced vocalist, but also a novel author and voice teacher. She gives lectures about singing and vocal technique at university in Korea. I recommend her performance of Everyone as well as Arirang and You Raise Me Up.
I see SoHyang and I subscribe... Anyone who discovers this jewel must be followed. So here is to you! Cheers... Please do a Vimeo (Vimeo not you tube reaction) to “Everyone”. I say Vimeo because to get the full impact of the performance you need the lyrics and Vimeo has them. You should react to Sohyang singing Lean on Me for Michael Bolton when he guested at Immortal Song! Also her version of I Have Nothing is just... I have no words for it. It's beyond beautiful.
I'm sold. Subscribed just from your initial engagement with the beginning section of her singing and just your interactions and technical discussion . 👍
it is so interesting seeing you discuss this, its so different from other reaction-analysis channels i loved this so much!! Please keep watching sohyang in the future
She is the real Queen Sohyang.....yes sir. In 2017 there is funny thing happen (for me and other some people.....hehehe),,,that Dimash Kudaibergen are Sohyang Male version, i always smile that time. They are both are amazing n brilliant singer.
Around minute 16:40 he talks about how after studying music and listening to so many amazing voices, a person tends to not be so amazed by many voices/music anymore, and this is exactly why I never studied music. I was born with a musical ear and soul; I can talk competently about music with any professional musician because, even though I don't know the jargon (the technical aspect of music and voices), I was born FEELING it all, so it comes naturally to discuss music with those who learned about it. The point is, to me, music is a type of magic, and I know that if I ever made it something I HAD to do instead of something I WANTED to do, that magic could go away (at least for me personally, others can have it both ways and good for them). Unlike most people who studied music, I experience frisson regularly, because I don't know the true technicality behind music and voice, I can just FEEL IT, and that is all I'll ever need from music. My loved ones always say it's a shame I never studied it, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Anyhow, I'm glad a trained professional like himself was still able to get the chills by listening to Sohyang, it's something I wish everyone could experience at least once. Her voice sounds like it was touched by something heavenly, and I'm so thankful life has allowed her to share her talents with us all.
Hi guys, great reaction and insight. Really enjoyed watching it. I’ve discovered Sohyang by accident few months ago and I’ve got to say - did not expect to stumble upon one of the best female singers I’ve ever heard. Do yourselves a favour and watch (and hopefully react) to her performance of the song “Everyone”. Looking forward to watching a lot more of your reactions, hopefully a lot more of Sohyang’s performance reactions. Cheers from Sydney
Just subscribed to you guys! Loved your reaction and analysis!!! And I totally get the wanting to "hate" the soft tone. I have a soft voice myself and it's a struggle 😂 I myself am a sucker for female singers with rich, dark, and deep tones of voice. If you want more So Hyang, I would love it if you reacted to one of her most recent performances in Begin Again. Her rendition of "I Will Always Love You", nearly acapella and sitting down is probably my favourite cover of that song ever.
Her epic Gospel song is " Everyone". 7 min. full emotion and power. For me, the best female singer ever
for me too my dear friend!
This
Oh yesssss! I hope they check out “Everyone” ♥️
This right here
ya for me Everyone is the best!!!
She is so underrated, wish she could perform in world stage just like Dimash.
Same with morissette
@@valenzuelanelrosp.545 Morissette already performed all over the world if im not wrong 😅
That isn't her goal .
Sohyang is actually more well known than Dimash in the western mainstream. Dimash is the king of reactorsphere, but he hasnt broke through to the mainstream in western countries yet. He's big in Russia, Kazakhstan and China, but most people in the US will have never heard of him.
As you wish
Her voice isn't tense tho. Almost at all, really. It's not muscle tension, it's compression. She mentioned this before. Besides, she uses a brighter sound than usual here. SoHyang has a new technical surprise in every performance. You should react to Arirang or Everyone.
Completely agree with everything said here, well put.
lmao yes
definitely everyone, omg I love that powerful performance
First time that any vocal coach that I have seen has even suggested that she has tension when she sings.....

Using the words "constriction" and "throat tension" is definitely not what I would go for
Regardless, she did NOT achieve this compressed sound by carrying a lower larynx position high up in the mix.
Wow!!! This is sooo interesting! Thanks for talk the info! Can you link her masterclass? We would love to check it out!
@@robertmyers7383 you’re too kind!!! 🙈 😅
I have been around for 60 years, and to me, she is the best female vocalist on the planet.
I loved how the video started off with lots of pauses, going back, talking technical stuff but then halfway it was like. screw it, we're just going to watch, get chills and be amazed.
Please check out Arirang Alone, Everyone, Hug me, Lean on me, You Raise me up, Dream. She'll continue to blow your mind.

아리랑~~~best
She is the BEST female singer in the world..... Also she teaches music and voice at the University of South Korea. She is a Master Vocalist, and she does her own arrangements.
Can you imagine having her as a teacher? WOW!!!!!
Sohyang performances are almost beyond human standards.

I adore Sohyang so much. She has an anointing y'all.
True & facts... Plus this video doesn't have any title on their thumbnail like other reaction videos .. hmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

@@robertmyers7383 yes they are so biased ,
Floor Jansen of nightwish would give her a run for her money... opera , growl and any other voice that’s required by the song ...
Most of Sohyang's reactions have something in common. Initially, the evaluation of the song. In the middle,'Yeah. good at singing.' In the last part, she sings so well that she doesn't evaluate it and just listens.
Yeah they need to stop evaluating her. Just. fkn listen and enjoy.
That note she hits at 18:42 gave me chills. It's so perfect.. it's melting into the symphony.
She is just amazing.
Thank you so much for great reaction and analysis.
Have a nice day.
If you havent yet, you should react to so hyang singing arirang alone, and/or everyone, next;
I am probably the one who didn't like her performance of that song. My favorite is Arirang.
There’s nothing wrong with intentionally being breathy for an emotional impact. Especially if the person proves that they can go in and out of that. You just don’t want to overdo it.
True & facts

She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RUclips.
He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.)
Here is the interview where So Hyang related the events: ruclips.net/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/видео.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster and the rest watched on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/видео.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ruclips.net/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/видео.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that So Hyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RUclips, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being.

I must have listened to her sing more than a thousand times and I think I enjoy the experience almost as much as the first time I heard her on every subsequent occasion. I've never had that experience with any other singer!
I’m not a singer and I really don’t know what you are talking about, but regardlessly SOHYANG brings me to tears all the times and has soothe my soul plenty of times.
Can’t wait for your next reaction of her cover! You guys are awesome! 😍😍😍
Her studio version “Amazing Grace” will be the best text for people who wants to know how to sing, I think!
Welcome to Sohyang’s amazing journey!
I absolutely enjoyed your reaction 😃
She is the best gospel singer in the world 🌍
haha I KNEW you two would love her..DEFINITELY check out her cover of, "I Have Nothing" as well!
Can you react to Sohyang Hug Me next, it’s really good
Omg, yes, especially where she's wearing a pink dress and blonde hair.
All the performances by Sohyang in Immortal Song 2 will give you chills guaranteed.
I was waiting for your reaction to So Hyang. You need to hear more from her!
Sohyang sang during Begin Again Korea.
I strongly recommend "love poem" and "stay."
Undoubtedly one of the best singers out there ❤️ you guys should react to her singing “Everyone” or “Arirang”
Thank you...
We sincerely welcome you to the world of Sohyang's music.
Sohyang’s song always seems to play a role in our hearts.
Sohyang’s song seems to be heard more often with the heart
rather than with the ear. I would also like you to comment on Sohyang's other songs.
"you raise me up", "Lean on me", "Power of love", "Arirang alone", "I will always love",
"Everyone", "I have nothing", "Where are you", "Monalisa" , "Hug me", "Dear love", "Wind song" etc...
Sohyang actually lives like a 'bridge' between God and people, which is why she is a messenger not just a singer.
Of course and she’s a Vocal teachers herself and shes a Legend ❤️
Great reaction and analysis. Please do more of her.
angel sohyang ^^ you raise me up gogo~~~
wow, such great and thorough analysis! subscribed, can't wait to watch more of you guys

Best rendition of this song. Please, please react to her take of "YOU RAISED ME UP" from IMMORTAL SONGS 2 where she proves she's an "EARTH ANGEL"!!!
I like your rigorous analysis and personal thought toward her performance.
Look forward for your next reaction of her! Coaches ✌🏻👏🏻
SoHyang, one of the greatest singer in the world that heaven blessed us with. Hope to see more.
Welcome to So hyang world! Check her "Arirang Alone" in immortal songs! It's like heaven I promise!
Welcome to the otherworldly world of Sohyang, you wont regret landing in her planet, her orbital force is love from God to us. Thank you, amazing reaction.
I really like these two voice coaches!!. This is only my 2nd time watching them and . I realy like how they don't force themselves to be in perfect sync with each opinions!!
Her rendition of "I have nothing" at I am Singer is beyond amazing. Great analysis btw!
so hyang--bridge over troubled water/i have nothing/o holy night/arirang alone/everyone/upon this rock/us national anthem/hero/power of love/let it go/breathe/hug me/amazing grace/i will always love you
Welcome to Sohyang's world.
You will be hard pressed to find anyone with better technique than her.
You guys definitely should listen to Sohyang singing Arirang. I got chills the whole performance
So-Hyang Arirang is my one of my favourite vocal performances ever, chillsssss
I have to say this is my favourite type of reaction and analysis. You break down every point. I'm a self taught singer and I love that you break down parts I sensed needed to be pointed out without causing a rage in Sohyang fans(I'm one of them, I mean who isn't?). Subscribed, can't wait to watch more of you two.
You know shes good when vocal coaches just laugh xD
she is the real queen. her "everyone" is an epic too.
Thank you for loving Sohyang. good reaction!! The voice is like Celine + Whitney + Mariah Carey. Angel Sohyang
I love your channel ! We are amazing ! I´M from Brazil
You should hear her do "You raise me up". It's life changing!
Back again to watch you guys react to this song. Happy new month / Sunday.
I wish Sohyang would get to watch this.
