Your right that Korean distinguishes eo and o, but you also need to remember that when singing you have a lot of room to change the quality of a vowel and still have people recognize the words. I'm English an a sound like in the word father can be anywhere between something like the a in apple to the schwa sound, or even somewhere close to an o or u sound. So I'd say that most people wouldn't even notice that difference in vowel quality. The fact that they picked up on how Celine's accent affects her singing in English and related it to sohyang likely means that they believe the effect comes from the differences in vowel quality in Korean. They didn't go out and say it, but I believe that's the implication of what they were saying. I think you guys are being a bit too harsh on them.

Your point about simple vs complex is a very good observation. She has said that this was the most difficult performance she's had to prepare for. I'd bet a large part is how complex and technically difficult the song is to sing, but I would also bet that because the song really encapsulates her own desire to use her music to help comfort people, the emotional connection with the song likely added to the difficulty she felt.

  • @peerah

Melia is absolutely correct. Sohyang is definitely mixing for almost the entirety of the fifth octave probably because it’s the only healthy way for a human being to do it. You can’t have the longevity in your career if you don’t save your instrument. The key here, as Melia also said, is that she brings a lot of the intensity from her chest voice up into her mix, so much so that her chest mix sounds almost like a full belt. She actually chest-mixes all the way up to at least A5 before it becomes a bit more head-dominant, but still pretty much connected.

Okay, I'm about to write a lot because I know Chase will read this lol:
I like that you guys pointed out that you think her weaker spot is her lower register. That has never really been a point of contention among vocal technique fans, since she does spend a considerable amount of time in her belting range and that's where she shines, but I do wanna lay out my thoughts out on you guys. It took me a few years to actually realize this about SoHyang, but when I did, a lot of things made sense. Essentially, her issue in the lower register isn't thyroarytenoid muscle underdevelopment, but rather an unfamiliarity with a wider range of muscle coordinations of her chest register. SoHyang rarely ever sings in pure chest voice. She usually carries some _slight_ head voice muscle engagement when singing in her lower register because it provides a sweeter and lighter tonal quality, and that's usually what she goes for. It's the reason she sounds less projected and weaker. I call them "mixy lows".
If you hear her rendition of songs such as "It's Only My World" (a rock song), you'll hear her actually engaging full chest voice and projecting into the mid 3rd octave with no issue and considerable chest resonance. It's like two ends of the chest voice spectrum. Dark, projected, full VS light, weak-ish, brighter. The issue is that her instrument down there isn't as evened out as the rest of her voice is, so she rarely ventures into muscle coordinations that lie between those two ends of the spectrum. (They aren't total ends, yes, but I'm trying to make a point). Regardless, I don't think it's arguable that her chest voice is 'underdeveloped', since you can very, very clearly hear a strong, present and thick chest resonance in her mixed voice. That isn't achievable without proper thyroarytenoid muscle development and proper muscle coordination.
The second thing I would like to mention is that I like that you also pointed out that she "works hard" when engaging her abdominal/core area. She has mentioned that that is one of the keys to the way she sings, as (according to her) she is "a singer who relies on breathing". In my mind, she is one of the only contemporary singers to have mastered the art of "appoggio" so well. I'm sure Melia is familiar with this concept. Proper diaphragmatic breath support/engagement extends beyond just regulating your airflow accordingly to fit each vocal phrase. Proper regulation and balance of the air *pressure* (according to not only the duration of the vocal phrase, but also the volume, the register, the placement and the implementation of secondary techniques that change the shape of the vocal tract, such as twang) is crucial to alleviating extrinsic muscle tension from the laryngopharyngeal set of muscles that surround the larynx and make up the vocal tract. That's one of the reasons that she's able to venture to as high as the beginning of the 6th octave in a fairly balanced mixed voice with virtually no extrinsic muscle tension and a relatively relaxed and freely moving/fairly neutral larynx. If I'm being honest, I never fully understood how appogggio can affect muscle contraction of the vocal tract, so if you two can enlighten me on this, please do.
It's very unclear how extensive her vocal training is, but there a lot of things I can hear that point to classical singing influences, such as her ability to implement chiaroscuro when she wants to, her implementation of twang, her "forward placement", her masterful use of appoggio and the widening of the pharyngeal space by lowering her larynx. She was definitely trained into gospel belting though. In my opinion, she was not classically trained. She doesn't have the head voice of a classically trained opera soprano, HOWEVER, she is the only female contemporary singer I've heard to sing the way male opera tenors do. She rarely does this, but in some songs (like "Do You Know") she goes chesty, adds twang, lowers her larynx and "places in the mask", which is the recipe for the classically trained tenor sound. It sounds very good.
Lastly, to answer your question, she is mixing. Above the first passagio it's virtually impossible to "fully belt" aka use pure chest voice. Unless you pull up your chest voice (Christina Aguilera I'm looking at you), then you mix. But she can control her ratio, placement, tonal balance and weight. That's why she's so versatile and so in-control.

    • @ChaseandMelia
      @ChaseandMelia  3 года назад +82

WOW!! This is full of amazing commentary on vocal pedagogy! Hats off to you, your understanding of the voice is impressive and insightful.
First let me say, I love your saying “mixy-lows” feels like a great description for what we’re hearing!
Now to answer your question about appoggio and it’s effect on muscle contraction. (This is Melia, surprise 😅 - chase and I talked about this because I was too excited) I think of it as basic physics of phonation. We need consistent airflow in order for our vocal folds to fully and properly phonate. Think of the grass example, you hold to blades of grass together and blow through them and they whistle or hum. If you’ve ever tried this, the air must be consistent and steady in order for you to make a sound. Obviously our blades of grass (vocal folds) are surrounded by a complex case of muscle, tissue and cartilage, and because of this, we can compensate for the lack of consistent airflow by using our muscles to create sound. It is my understanding that by using your air with consistent pressure and what I hesitate to call control, you allow your vocal folds to naturally adduct, and you make your natural sound. Now there are a lot of factors that go into this, the register in which your singing would effect the amount of air and the pressure in which you exhale but these are all minute changes and the concept would generally be the same for wherever you sing.
There’s so much more we’d love to address, we’re considering making a video about this! Chase also has opinions and thoughts so we might just do a video response!

The whole topic of "Is it mix or chest with twang?" gets super heated for some reason but she says it's a mix and credits her work with Seth Riggs for helping her to figure out how to balance it properly. Otherwise she's self taught and if you look at her videos from before 2010 or so you can see evidence that she had an "Aha" moment and went from super unstable and pitchy in her upper register to pretty much what we hear today. The thing that stands out for me is exactly the observation you made about her presence onstage which can't help but make you feel good. She has something special that allows her to connect with her audience in a way that I think is unique. Hey for you patreons .. I would really suggest you putting them onto SoHyang - I have Nothing live reaction. I always had that as my favorite performance by her and just recently a big vocal coach who never really overreacts said the same thing and was blown away by it .. which tells me there is a lot going on vocally there to break down for them.

I would prefer them to react to her performance of Dream on the same concert instead (with subtitles). I find that while the I Have Nothing performance was crazy good, she definitely sounded a bit tired there (as she sang it IMMEDIATELY after singing Dream). Besides, the climax of Dream is monstrous.

She is absolutely good at mixing. In other videos, she actually mixes a lot and so good at that. Many experts and voice teachers say that she is the master of mix and using different registers. And also she got vocal lessons fron seth riggs who taught Michael Jackson so i think she is classically trained

I'm loving your analysis and reaction so far. But I think the girl at 12:53 was trying to hold back tears, not putting on a stank face 😆 It's a VERY emotional song, I reckon you'd have picked up on it a bit more if you'd seen the version with the English subtitles.

Thank you so much for great analysis and reaction.
Sohyang said that the seven-minute song was the most difficult performance in her life. With all her might, she delivered the message of consolation, hope and courage that she wanted to convey in a touching way.
She is just amazing and an inspirational artist.
Especially I was surprised by her amazing physical strength before her incredible vocal technique.
I'm a choir member, but it's physically very difficult to sing a long seven-minute song, and if you don't have a lot of practice, you'll have a sore throat.
She is a great vocal monster.
    Please more react to Sohyang.
    Have a good time.

12:33 - 12:36. Actually, she had it wide, then narrow, then wide again. It was very subtle changes in the shape of the vowel, which I’ve always learned you should do anyway.

She is the queen of mix and no classical training but Seth Riggs taught her mixed voice and she uses it up to Eb5 a lot ! It’s one reason that she is so easy to listen to not like many or even most Lyric soprano’s! To me she sound more like a Lyric coloraturas soprano. Probably because she uses mix so much that her voice is easy on the ears and nerves, LoL !

Her main vocal coach is Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. She traveled to the US to be taught by the best. The rest is all her. She does all of her own arranging and tells the backing singers how she wants them to come in as well as the orchestra. She is a perfectionist and is why, when you thought you found fault with some of her singing because that’s not her “money notes”, you thought you knew, but if she backs off of a note, it’s on purpose.

Sohyang always delivers message through lyrics. So, if you watch a video clips without English substilte, you picked a wrong video clip. this piece has lots of meaningful lyrics about her passion although the melody or other musical stuffs are good enough to listen. You may rewatch her Everyone with a right video clip.

She once had lesson from Seth Riggs while she was in US. because her husband was there for missionary. she had 3 hardships of personal issues. one was her parents divorce when she was 19 and she is cancer survivor and at the time she was singing on the stage like this she had a Pneumonia. Even she have been through these hardships, she is singing for a message with a hope.

She has never had any classical training. She is self taught. Sure you can count her 2-3 lessons with Seth Riggs but he only showed her some basic exercises like 'nei nei nei' so I don't personally count that as her being trained. She was already singing for a whole decade and quite well imo prior to her meeting with Seth Riggs. She has also never stated that she worked with a vocal coach.
