'Arirang' is a group of folk songs in Korea. They all differ in melody, context and mood region to region apart from the fact they share the word 'Arirang' in the chorus.
The word 'Arirang' can mean nothing and everything, and has to be interpreted in the given song's context (it's a bit like the word 'Oom-Pah-Pah' in the musical 'Oliver!').
The most famous version of Arirang is from Seoul region, and it became the favourite of the nation in the 20's when it was sung in then a hit film of the same title. Its soulful simple tune lended itself to be sung in both joyous and sad occasion and with different lyrics. The song went wherever Koreans went during the colonial time - whether as hard labourers to Pacific islands or so-called 'comfort women' to Southeast Asia. The local natives who contacted these Koreans, who were dislocated forcefully by the Imperial Japan, still remember the tune of Arirang after half a century.
Now, 'Arirang Alone' is a modern variation of this famous folk tune. It assums a lone voice wishing for the reunification of North/South Korea (hence Arirang 'Alone'), picturing the image of a sea journey from Halla-mountain in the South to Baektu-mountain in the North. The journey is going to be rough (and in this context, 'Arigang Hill' represents the obstacle to overcome), and may be forced to break down occasionally... but the lone voice still encourages to carry on and others to join in hand-in-hand.
In this Sohyang arrangement, she turned the simple ditty to a full blown journey - starting off as a somewhat naive, childlike lone voice hoping for the journey to reunification. It soon meets the rough sea and obstacles as represented by the dramatic transition, but, as Korea's modern history proves, she wouldn't give up the spirit and carry on with renewed energy. When the song reaches the chorus of the famous folk tune, which literally every Korean knows, she encourages the audience to join in, simbolically to join in, hand-in-hand, to this journey to reunion. But at the end, she comes back as the lone voice, now somewhat more melancholic because indeed the journey to reunification is still far and rough... but as the closing line says ('We're going over Arirang Hill'), she wouldn't let go of the hope.
With this historic and cultural context, one would be able to understand better why this Sohyang rendition of 'Arirang Alone' struck the heart of Korean public.

Just imagine a woman leaving her country grabbing her child's hand one by one and finding safe place to hide not knowing his husband and parents live or die at Korean war. that's exactly what I have a feeling about arirang....arirang is bright song but meaning in this song is not bright. it say I feel sad but we can carry on.

The greatest singer of our times. There is no other female singer who even comes close. It is hard to even explain but Sohyang's voice and stage presence is almost supernatural and every time we hear her sing we get transported to another place where musical joy is all around us. And we can't get enough of her. I have listened to Sohyang virtually every day since I first heard her sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" three years ago. And I end up with misty eyes and almost a confused musical state because she can and does take us away when she sings. I think I can speak for everyone else on the Comments section and state unequivocally that we love Sohyang with a passion! Period. 👌

Todd, you certainly speak for me. I stumbled across her video of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" several years ago and it changed my life. I have a profound passion for this exquisite lady, but the reality is that she is just a beautiful image flickering across my computer screen. I am old and single so I have no apprehensions about that affection, but I often wonder what it would be like to know her. She is very likely, not only the finest singer that ever lived, but also the finest person on the planet.
Early in my day, I search for someone reacting to my favorite Sohyang performances for the first time. Some folks are puzzled by her but few fail to be dumbfounded. Those of us spiritual enough to perceive who Sohyang truly is are fortunate to have found her. Just as he said, one is not exactly the same after Sohyang.
      Cheers, my friend.

You speak reality, but there are times, as when looking back into her eyes in that very last second of "Sweet Dreams, My Dear" Korean, when the words from "The Impossible Dream" are meaningful. It has to be enough "to love, pure and chaste from afar". Corny as it sounds, it is true.
      Best Wishes.

@@Vanessa-xe3cc Easy. Sohyang has refused all the recording contracts offered to her and wants no part of the Hollywood lifestyle. The latest was in October 2020 when she turned down Sony Music US, the second largest music corporation in the world. And others have tried before. Here is a biography of Sohyang that will explain who she is and how she lives her life. But of course the "best" is a bit subjective. Nevertheless, after you have heard Sohyang's body of work, I think you too will agree that she is the best female singer on the planet. Many vocal coaches and teachers have stated Sohyang can go toe to toe with anyone and is without question one of the greatest of our time. Other than her church, charity and film and TV work, Sohyang only records for a small South Korean Gospel label and is more than happy that way. Virtually all of her songs on RUclips are recorded LIVE before an audience--the hardest way of recording, as it allows for no mistakes! 😉
PS Sohyang is not an opera singer, so don't compare her to them. She is a Contemporary Christian Music singer, or more commonly referred to as a Gospel singer. But she covers a wide variety of styles of modern Pop and these styles of music are too different to opera. And lastly, Sohyang is a 100% self taught singer with only a few sessions with Seth Riggs while on holiday in California in 2010.

    • @ToddSauve
      @ToddSauve Год назад +2

@@Vanessa-xe3cc We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: ruclips.net/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/видео.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/видео.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ruclips.net/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/видео.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RUclips, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
      • First is a type of Korean traditional music.
      • Second is to burn incense on a burner.
      • Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

And finally “Will You Be There”: ruclips.net/video/nBdSpexUxik/видео.html
Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ruclips.net/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/видео.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews.
      OK, I’ll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ruclips.net/video/VnPAkryrygQ/видео.html I know, bananas isn’t it?
Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

Glad to see another great reaction of Sohyang! A bit of background about the song: the are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of “Arirang”. It is estimated the song is more than 600 years old and "Arirang" is included twice on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The song became an unofficial anthem during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945), when singing was censored heavily and it became a criminal offense for anyone to be singing any patriotic song, including the national anthem. Therefore, a resistance anthem at the time. Even so, the song became highly popular in Japan. Currently, “Arirang” is sung in both North and South Korea, and represents the symbol of unity in the region that is divided by the Korean War. Source and more info: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arirang.
    Cheers!

I think the thing that really astounds me when I watch this piece in addition to her S tier vocal performance is the way they arranged the orchestra to TELL A STORY. The lyrics i think can be a little vague, but I think the arrangement paints a picture that envokes a level of emotion I would never have gotten from the lyrics alone. the soft beginning, the storm of conflict or confusion, the reunification and celebration but the descent into reality with the gentle yearning that makes you realize it was all a dream and a hope for better all along. I get chills every time I watch it.

Kim Sohyang (called Sohyang) * 1978 in Gwangju, South Korea. She is self-taught and a real all-rounder.
Sohyang comes from poor divorced parents. As a teenager, she converted to Christianity and planned to become a cartoonist and artist. Instead, she joined a band and married drummer Kim Hee-jun. She started singing late and has no formal vocal training, but since has had some lessons from Seth Riggs (American voice coach).
Shortly after the wedding she had to have an operation and was told she could not have children. She was then 21 years old.
She decided to devote her life to singing for God and the comfort and joy of people. She is also a fantasy novelist, gives singing lessons at the Music House Academy in her home town and is a guest speaker at a university.
She made her singing debut in 1996. She only became known in 2012 through her participation in the second season of the Korean singing competition I am A Singer.
Sohyang became the first Korean female artist to sing the American national anthem at an NBA game.
After the huge success in 2017 in the "King of Mask Singer" (Korea), Sohyang’s appearances became less and less. She was struggling with severe pneumonia, which came back eight times and almost took her voice away.
Sohyang, hailed as "Korean Mariah Carey" for her outstanding vocal skills, shared how obsessed she was. She didn't want to damage her reputation, didn't allow herself to make any mistakes. So when she was stripped of sheen, all she could do was repent and reflect on her Christianity. She realized that the most important thing as a singer was to comfort people about not being perfect.
She rejects contract offers from major music agencies for reasons of belief (Sony Music in the USA). She says, "... I'm perfectly fine sharing my music on RUclips, which can do to tens of millions of people around the world without feeling stuck. Maybe that's why I was born around this time."
Sohyang's vocal type is a lyric soprano, specifically a Full-Lyric Soprano. Her vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (supported range from G # 3 to E6), a total of 3 octaves, 3 notes, and a semitone. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals, with characteristics being a homogeneous, rounded, and bright instrument of remarkable beauty and meticulous control.
Even if she is not the most famous singer in the world but she is one of the best. 💥This woman is fire!!! The Greatest Belt Queen Ever!!!💥

Just for your information this is a show called immortal songs (which have running since 2011), so basically there are different theme or legend (legend referring to artist) for every episode so the contestant have to sing a song based on the theme or that legend. And this show does not allow the contestant to lipsync they have to sing live. And the audience will vote on who they think sing better. So how the show goes is like the host will pick a random name (there are 6 contestant per episodes) to decide the order, the host will pick 2 names after the 2 artist sing their song then the audience will vote (they scored the artist but the score was not shown on screen and instead a light was used to indicate the person with the higher score) And the the person with the higher score will wait backstage while the other person goes back to the waiting roo where the other artists and the waiting room hosts were in. And the program host will pick another name, but this time he only pick one name and the next person will perform their song and the audience will vote again so basically thats how this show run. And there are 500 people in the audience, but due to covid there are no audience instead there are 20 special judges mostly KBS (the brodcast station) employees. But on november 2021 they announce the show will reopen the show to a live audience, and episode 536 was the first episodee to air with audience. Sorry if my explanation is long, cause maybe there are some people who are not familiar with this show. If you have read this far thank you. :)

“Arirang” is a Korean folk song, sometimes considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea.
Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. But it is the name of a Korean mountain pass.
Nobody knows who made this song. Titles of different versions of the song are usually prefixed by their place of origin. At first, it was the song of ladies who had to send their husband somewhere. But it became a popular song when Korea was ruled as a colony by Japan in the early 20th century. (www)
    The History of Korean Oppression:
There is a typical folk music in Korea. It demonstrates the loving and caring in this nation, and it is a patriotic song to evoke public’s personal feelings. Those sounds, called the “menari note,” are associated with children crying, the playing of willow pipes, the chanting of funeral casket bearers, and multiplication-table rote exercises. This melody is the archetype of sounds most familiar to and cherished by Koreans. () “Arirang is beloved by the Korean people and can be sung by virtually all Koreans, so it is clearly a critical factor to assure the unity of the Korean nation”:The Korean In the early 1900s, Japan attempted to implement a cultural genocide in Korea.Japanese efforts to control the Korean peninsula aimed to eradicate the Korean language, Korean family names, and Korean cultural practices. Korean men were coerced into enlisting as Japanese soldiers in World War II. Korean women were captured as sex slaves (known to many as the pejorative euphemism “comfort women”) in military rape camps until the end of the second World War.A tragic song of separation and lost love, Arirang is a national symbol not only of Korea’s distant past, but also its turbulent modern history. It served as a symbol of Korea’s struggle for independence under Japan, and its relevance has remained throughout decades of division and fraternal hostilities.“Arirang represents all the joys and sorrows in the history and lives of Koreans,” says the National Folk Museum of Korea. “It is deeply rooted in Koreans’ emotion as the cultural DNA.” (Arirang, a song of joy and sorrow in modern times) People grow up with this music no matter they live in North and South, they all listen to this kind of music and it evokes their nostalgia feelings about their nations and cultural they carry with. The separation between two countries and the sad past make this music more exotic. (www)

Here's a great all female band from Japan they are power metal yet their singer was an R&B Singer before joining the 2 lead guitars rival any male guitarist out there for the past 30 years and are I believe presently the best duo guitarists in any band along with this they have the best double bass drummer in 2018 they won the metal hammer golden god award for best new band an award won also by Anthrax and Avenged Sevenfold. in this ballad you get a sense for how strong her voice is and how much feelings she adds to the ballad. The singers name is Asami guitarist Midori (also a bodybuilder-Golden Shredder) Guitarist/Pianist Miyako (Classically trained pianist they call her the golden touch) Drummer Haruna (The little engine that could, pocket nuke) and Bassist Miho (Founder that as of last year left band they just this week introduced their new Bassist Fami) Here is from Five of a Kind concert 2020 at the Zepp DiverCity Japan (Note:Asami sings in English) Edge of the World ruclips.net/video/UZjxMjBop7w/видео.html
