Big Mama is a more senior group compared to the ones that are popular these days (not just age-wise but also in the music industry, having debuted in 2003). Back when kpop was starting to gain its foothold, these ladies were already a force to be reckoned with. Lee Young Hyun released a solo album and "Resignation" was her signature track. They disbanded around 2012 and only got together again for a comeback last year. Their new track, One Day, is also a lovely piece.
They have a new song "Like Nothing Happened"
Love this group, I'm so excited for their comeback. It's a testament to their technique that they've been able to maintain their voices through the years and their blend as a group. Also FYI in Korean (same as Japanese and Chinese) they typically have their surname first, so Lee Young Hyun instead of Young Hyun Lee as it would be in English.

lee young hyun, if youve ever heard her from back then, she sang and belted a lot with her throat.... and she changed her singing technique after getting vocal cord nodules. even around 2012ish when she went out on a show "i am a singer 2", she still had problem with her vocal cord nodules. but seems like she finally was able to heal and fix it!!!! im super glad she did

Full names in Korean are read so that the family name is first. So Lee Ji-young(middle-left), Lee is her last/family name. For those who don't know their names from L-R: Shin Yeon-ah, Lee Ji-young, Lee Young-hyun, Park Min-hye.
Big Mama is Korea's most legendary group. They are now teaching students as practical music university professors. It's amazing that Joe's songs were about 20 years ago.
Big Mama group debuted in 2003, disbanded in 2012, and reunited this time. And each member is currently working as a practical music professor at various universities.

I’ve never met a person so critical of Lee Young Hyun. It almost seemed as if the teachers here needed to teach these legends rather than them being taught. Watch any of the vocal teachers reacting to Big Mama and you will see the vocal teachers here in comparison show pride and lack of respect for these masters or legends at what they do. The woman vocal teacher was saying Lee Young Hyun needed to show more teeth and was talking about her lack of vowels. C’mon now lol. I appreciated the guy vocal teacher a lot because he seemed more objective and explained things better. Regardless, as teachers, let’s show more humility.

Commenting on a university professional in applied music and is 20 years older than her on her vowels and etc? I wish she stop trying to find things to say to make her sound "professional" and at every chance trying to show how she does it... 🤔
imo the teeth is just for brightness in the tone, which is debateable if needed. and her "held locked down" tone/shape really shines in her Forsake peformances where the sound just washes over you. you can really see the difference during Resignation when Mellia is singing too.

The intermittent "breaks" in Shin's voice at the beginning of the second song appear carefully planned. If you see the lyrical content, you will see why. Shin is the most interesting of the bunch. She sounds like a classic jazz vocalist. She also does most of the arrangements and is the leader. Most of the time, the eldest is the leader by default in Korean culture, but Shin is the leader on merit.
I know this video is old but for anyone who is watching still I just wanted explain that the song that Lee Young-hyun sang was a song she actually wrote and is considered her solo song, which was included in as a special track on the group's album at the time. It is one of the TOP songs that Korean ppl sing in karaoke for 15 straight years since its release (yes, we track this). It's considered one of the hardest songs to sing and she supposedly wrote this song when she was in college after she broke up with her boyfriend at the time after locking herself in the music rooms at her college for three days. It's about the last phone call you have with your ex and in some performances you can see her still get very emotional (as she did in the Killing Voice towards the end of the song).
I have only seen the Big Mama and Mamamoo Killing Voice as well. It seems like a great way to introduce a group. From what I read they did this Killing Voice to show students(some or all of them are Professors) how its done, even a decade after they disbanded. BUT they did actually release a brand new song One More Day June 2021. This group really really knows how to sing, There are not many groups this good. They flew under my radar, back in 2003 to 2012 I was more into jpop, BoA was the only kpop I was a fan of but she has just as much Jpop. I got into kpop soon after Mamamoo and then Dreamcatcher came on the scene. Big Mama is mainly R&B and Soul, at least from the albums I have. They are closer to my age, mid and late 40s and only about 12 years older than the mamamoo members but both sound way better than your typical kpop 19 year old singer. It seems they are listed as active again, so perhaps there will be more from them. I will certainly listen.

I appreciate this review. I've seen many reactions of Big Mama Killing Voice and most people comment about Lee Young Hyun and Lee Ji Yong because they have very noticeable flair in high and low registers respectively but I personally think Shin Yeon Ah and Park Min Hye are super important to the group as center pieces. So you pointing out Park Min Hye's vocal qualities here was super nice!! I love all of them and listening to your commentaries was super enlightening too.
TRUUEEEEE, I LOVE THEM!!! Ms Lee Young Hyun introduced me to their group, but Ms Lee Ji Young got my 💖. I think Ms Park Mi Hye tends to be overlooked at times but I really admire how she can shine and operate in different genres especially in english songs. And of course, the unforgettable ace, Ms Shin Yeon Ah! ❤️

Chase gets this look on his face on a few and fairly rare occasions that I've noticed in multiple videos (I first noticed it in the initial Sohyang video) where I feel like he realizes he's hearing something really special vocal-wise and I see him put the magnifying glass down a bit and just enjoy what he's hearing and he looks so appreciative.
Son Seung Yeon is a singer I really recommend you guys reacting to. She has vocals for days. Her singing Lost love on immortal song is just amazing!

One of these ladies appeared in a Black-and-White music video for Mamamoo's debut song, Mr. Ambiguous. It was awesome!
Big Mama is the first female idol group that doesn't focus on looks. but focusing on their vocals but as you know An idol is a beautiful and handsome face with a good voice. Even though they have incredible talent in vocals. In the end, they did not live together for long. but their voices will remain forever.
If you want to hear more of Mamamoo's fantastic vocals and particularly more harmonisation, then consider reacting to their immortal song performances where they take a Korean classic and remaster it.
These performances are mind-blowing and really highlight Mamamoo's insane range of genres and teamwork.
In my opinion, if the singer sang the song like you suggested in 27:10, I think the song would sound like a musical. In Korean Ballad genre like this, it will almost sound too generic and boring if this song was sang that way... in other words, it wouldn't have "character". I disagree with you that her voice was missing the "freeness"... rather I'd say it was her choice to sing in a "held' voice, because clearly, she's capable of singing the way you suggested in other videos.

I've watched many reactions to this clip. But yours I'm really enjoying and the comments you're making from a technical perspective I'm finding refereshing. You Listen to vocals the way I listen to fellow bass players.

Just wanted to let you guys know, I loved you’re reaction and hearing your opinion and perspective on this group. I’d also like to mention in Korea the last names come before their given names. So names like Lee, Park, Kim and so on are usually their family names. This isn’t a very good explanation so everyone please add on or correct me if I’m wrong. any way for me to improve this explanation is welcomed!!
I heard they used to be chorus singers for other singers for years and then go out together and came out with their own albums. They were really popular long time ago.

You explained it in simple way. Although I am not interested become a singer, I love watch vocal coach reaction. Do not afraid to show the imperfection of the artist because they are human, but do it in polite way. Some fans think their artist or idol are prefect. But I assume people who watch vocal coach reaction are someway want to know about vocal technique.

Maybe a little off topic but I was wondering what effect pregnancy has on your singing and on how you use your 'instrument'? Am I wrong in thinking that hormones can actually change vocal chords? But also how much difference does it make to breath control etc? I find the technical explanations you give so interesting.

His my ultimate favorite Korean male singer even tho i was born in 90's and he debuted 70's. His music touches my heart. His lyrics are poetic and i fell like i can relate to all of his messages. Lee Moon Sae has 16 full albums, he had thyroid cancer back in early 2000; During his surgery he refuse to get rid of all the cancer cells because he had to take chance to loose his singing career. He have never give up singing after the surgery and his cancer relapse in 2014.
This 'Fantastic Due' is where fans can sing a duet with their favorite singer.

the real point is they are verygood on their own way of singing even the two of you have also your own singing techniques. every individual of them have there own styles and there originality way of singing makes them a famous singer like Lee Young Hyun her soulful singing style that made her the Korea's soulful diva thats her trademark. every member of the group have their own style vocal deliver and techniques well it's just my opinion ☺️☺️☺️
There in their 40-50s and they are the best singer in the industry, they are all prof of music. Lee young hyun definitely more emotional singer but she is definitely one of the best voice out there

Kim Jong Kook is the 2nd person only in Korea that receives 3 Grand Award from 3 major station for his song (SBS, KBS, MBC) in the same year. The first person who achieved this feat is Cho Young phil in 1980s and also the song that Kim Jong Kook remake in his last song on dingo killing voice is Cho Young phil's old Song. After Kim Jong Kook Receive 3 Grand Award in the same year, korean major station make changes to the rule that the same person cannot receive 3 Grand Award in the same year again. I have about 6 albums of Big Mama and they are outstanding. They sound much the same, but I believe that Lee Young Hyun has only matured better. Actually they have all matured better:)
