Joe Cole's goal gave Chelsea a slender first-leg lead in their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
Manager Rafael Benitez made three alterations to the side that began the first game, with Peter Crouch, Jermaine Pennant and Steve Finnan earning a recall, while the main change in the Chelsea lineup saw Michael Essien start in the centre of defence in place of the injured Ricardo Carvalho.

It's curious. They faced in 5 consecutive seasons, semis (2004/05, 2006/07 and 2007/08), quarter finals (2008/09), group stage (2005/06), but they haven't faced each other in Champions since 2009

I remember walking away from the ground after this game feeling depressed.... it was a comedown off the tension, stress and excitement of the last couple of hours. I was buzzing to be going to Athens but as I walked passed the king Harry I remember feeling down. Surreal really as I've never felt like that after a big win before. Having had a season ticket for 27 years kuyts penalty was one of my best and memorable moments of being in Anfield.
I've spoken to people who have had similar feelings about this game. I think a part of it was knowing United were playing the next evening and could have played us in the final - what a nightmare that would have been.
@@davidnesbit45 Yeah I'd forgotten about that but I do remember around this time saying to mates it's inevitable we will play man u in a final at some point.
To be honest i hope it never happens. If it did though... It would be the biggest game in European footballs history.
@@kopthelotklopp1523 Given the problems in Athens in 2007 with tickets and getting into the ground, had we played United, there would have been a riot. We would have been banned from Europe forever.
@@davidnesbit45 yeah I was there mate although thankfully got in well before all that. In 2018 I got to my seat about 2.5 hours before kick off. No messing about. But yeah Athens was terrible, absolute farce. I didn’t go to Paris more recently but that must have been even worse.

Liverpool with mediocre players except a few (Reina, Alonso, Gerrard) giving Chelski a run for their money back in the days. Benitez had Liverpool punch way above it weight.

@@nelsonm1 YOU don't know football. Would Kuyt get into any of the top four as a striker? No. At his most productive, he was a 15 goal striker while playing week-in week out. JAR may be. My list is not exhaustive - Macherrano was there too - I did not mention him.
What are you on? This was a very good, solid team! They were extremely competitve, won silverware and made it to 2 CL finals. Plus, football was way, and I mean way more competitve than it has been in recent times. Just look at the legendary teams they faced not only in Prem but in europe.

Back when English grounds had good atmospheres where singing for a good portion of the match was common but now it’s totally gone in most.

its strange how gerrard is more talented than lampard, but in terms of performance, lampard out performed gerrard both in club and country.
It's not that strange as football is a team sport. Look at Chelsea squad players compared to Liverpool's.
When both of them play for England, usually Gerrard was played at several different positions. Mostly not at his best (preferred) position.

Back when they used to these games on free TV. Especially in the UK. So everyone could record it and save it. Shame now we have to stream in most cases even when you pay over 100£ a year and depending on your net speed the quality is varied.

Look at the difference between qualities of both squads.Drogba,terry,lampard,cech,ashley cole,michael essien,robben .chelsea had almost world class player at every position except maybe 1 or 2 positions and liverpool had only gerrard and alonso and rest were average players and they say lampard is better player than gerrard.Gerrard played with average players and went to semifinals and finals of champions league and liverpool were consistently top 4 in Gerrard's prime with average squad.
Why Rafael Benítez didn't start Peter Crouch in the final against AC Milan, I will never know.
Jermaine Pennant had the game of his life in Athens, and it was screaming out for Crouchie in the box that night...

2005 was a total fluke.
Will never forget (half of) this game. It was set to be my first ever UCL game at the age of 10, but my dad’s car broke down on the way. We missed agger’s goal and arrived as the second half kicked off. Had to spend the night at the house of a guy my dad sold printing presses to, who was unfortunately a blue. Missed a day of school the next day though. Worth it for those pens.
John Terry heartbroken to lose another semifinal at Anfield, not realising that there was even more pain ahead in the following two seasons, one directly because of him and the next due to uefalona. 💔
