  • The Assertor-class Star Dreadnought was the Little Brother of the Super Star Destroyer, but "little" is relative here. See how incredibly huge this ship was when compared to the largest structure on Earth, and see how it measured up to the Super Star Destroyer, Imperial-class Star Destroyer, Venator-class Star Destroyer, Millennium Falcon, Pelta-class Frigate, and Arquitens-class Light Cruiser. See how the Imperial Navy used this to rule the galaxy, and how it was used alongside the TIE Defender, Interdictor-class, Mandator-class Star Dreadnaught and Bellator-class dreadnought.

      Thrawn isn't in the new canon :) - no, that pale copy (bad clone?) from Rebells is NOT Thrawn! The real guy, as Timothy Zahn envisioned him, would have crushed the early Rebellion (we are talking about a guy who almost re-conquered the galaxy from a disadvantaged position, using minimal fleet assets (most of which were old ships like dreadnoughts!), a few fancy toys, battle meditation and Ysalmiri and his intellect and strategic thinking!).
      ps: Thrawn only didn't in the EU because a) he wasn't high enough in rank at first and b) because the emperor wanted him to prepare for the Yuzhan Vong (preparing the empire of the hand etc.)

      A cool fact about this ship was that the models he uses, the name and design of the ship were all created by a fan and submitted to Lucasfilm, which they later wrote int cannon, he meant for it to address the main issues that came up with other ships of this size, when they released official stats on it, it had significantly fewer guns and held fewer fighters than he originally meant, you can see that when you look at it the thing is covered in weapons. just some cool history.

      honestly if the whole story was realistic, the empire would be struggling to push like the us army in afganistan/irak.
      why? because the rebels would use Kinetic Kill Vehicles, docked on light ships and thrown at lightspeed against battleships by thoushands....
      That would be the space age equivalent of IED's.
      like the IED's, the KKV's would cost a fraction of what a battleship costs, and even if they fail to destroy, the damage caused to the exposed structures would be enough to CK the ship hit, especially if the hit is around the deck and the engine bay, which are notoriously exposed.
      should be space what we know, even the fragments of the projectiles would cause massive shrapnel damage inside the shields, since they are non energetic, possibly dumbfire rockets with a hyperdrive and high mass solid core heads....

      @@comethiburs2326 There was something about that ships could not go at hyperspeed within gravity well related to Roche radius, they would bounce off an obstacle. An there are technical measures to punch any ship out of hyperspace. But in fact former Republic, now Empire was stretched thin after war with Federation even while having extensive industry taken from federation and clone makers (Coruscant's whole f**ing moon was turned into a factory for new troops). But main reason why rebels weren't crushed that they gained some head start and liberated artificial Corellian system which had a local immobile station able destroy fleets or teleport planets. And as Timothy played it out as Empire indeed was struggling with Afgan\Chechnya-like situation (was written exactly in that time and we owe him the whole political scheme of old EU ).

    Fun fact:
    The reason the ship's tip looks the way it does is that the original design for the Assertor had incorporated a lighter version of the Death Star's weapon. The Eclipse filled that role later on though and they figured there was no reason for both to have that weapon. Lorewise it does not possess the same firepower, but the ship has retained its old model.

      it's really pointless to discuss or think about any imperial or star wars naval or military tactics or risks, because star wars does not care. the empire has probably by far the worst military command and strategies in history. so, thrawn, in all his intelligence, decided to do the biggest naval mistake known by building an even bigger ship after so many naval failures of the empire? he was more the dumbest military leader ever existed, the same as moff tarkin, darth vader or the emperor anyway. or, well, thrawn only did it because it looks better and the writers are the dumbest in the world, who knows...

    • @imperialsecuritybureau6037
      @imperialsecuritybureau6037 5 лет назад +10

      Agreed. With the resources it took to build the Death Star, about 77,000 of these could have been built, or 31 million ISDs. Better yet, 15.5 million ISDs and 38,500 of these! It would be a bit overkill though. You don’t need that many Assertors. The problem with this idea is that those ships would require a LOT more people to man them - and that equates to a whole lot more training and salaries. 31 million ISDs would need about 1.24 trillion people, as opposed to around a million times less people to crew the DS1.

    • @DanteYuy
      @DanteYuy 5 лет назад +4

      And there is your issue. What you don't understand is that the loss of those 300-400 ships to make one ship means you are in 300-400 less places than you would have been. Thrawn was all about economy of firepower and ability to react to multiple threats in multiple locations quickly and efficiency. Star Dreadnoughts spit in the face of this because while yes, they can roflstomp everything in one area, but what happens if assets are needed in 20-30 areas while it is roflstomping just that one?
      And therein lies Thrawn's arguments for a lighter, more mobile fleet. Against an asymmetric enemy like the rebellion, Star Dreadnoughts were a useless white elephant that were largely avoided by the more mobile rebels, to the detriment of the Empire that invested poorly into those larger ships that could have been spent on star destroyers and their support ships.

    I actually see Thrawn not necessarily approving of the Assertor, but not having as many issues with it as he would with the Executor or Eclipse. Reason being that for a ship its size, the Assertor is decently well-designed. Its weapons are far better placed than those of the Executor, it doesn't have the vulnerable underside of other Imperial dreadnoughts and it doesn't suffer from trench run syndrome nearly as much. Basically, if Thrawn was forced to choose a 10km+ super dreadnought, I think he'd pick the Assertor over any of the other classes, even if he'd rather not pick any of them in the first place.

      Sector Command and major planet defense command ships. Honestly, if I had to be stuck with star dreadnoughts, my command ships would likely revolve around Asserters, while I would use Bellators as rapid response fleet flagships, meant to react to any major threat quickly and with enough firepower to win. The other SSDs, like the Executor, Vengeance, Sovereign, and Eclipse I would rather scrap simply because they are not efficient designs

    Thrawn is entitled to his opinion as any general and tactical leader have their own tactical preference, but he is contradicting himself when it comes to defeating the future threat to the galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong. The emperor had foreseen a future threat to the galaxy from the unknown regions. That is why he was set to building the super weapons like the Death Star and SSD's. It has shown in Legends, that the regular capital ships or the Galactic Alliance could not withstand the Yuuzhan Vong's onslaught. It took the heavy capital ships like the Executor Star Dreadnoughts and the Viscount Star Dreadnoughts to defend well against the Vong. I thought Thrawn was good at studying other forces? Yeah, you don't need them to keep systems in line but you do need them for extra galactic defense. The Executor going down because an A-wing was pure plot armor and was re-explained that the whole fleet had worn down it's shields before a concert of fighter attacks on the bridge and it's engines. Remember, it took more than 20 bombs from planes to sink the Yamato, the Earth's super battleship of the sea, not some kamakaze crash.

    • @AlexinCobra
      @AlexinCobra 6 лет назад +3

      Right, and most sea worthy battleships in WW2 had a battle bridge which was at the base of the tower behind the main battery turret, depending on the ship class. The Iowa Class had battle bridge right inside the main bridge. I was an enclosed room in the back of the main bridge. They were heavily armored just like a main battery turret so main gun shells couldn't easily go through. The Executor should have had such a room because it was a symbol of power, just like all battleships, but George Lucas never joined the military or bothered studying military tactics before making Return of the Jedi. Empire Strikes Back is my all time favorite because it showed the ship as an unstoppable juggernaut, weathering an asteroid field while other star destroyer get their whole bridge obliterated. Yet in Return of the Jedi, one small A-wing can do all that damage while an asteroid can't ? That is why plot armor is stupid.

    I personally think that the Assertor is one of the more smart designs when it comes to Star Destroyers since it is actually well armed and suited to protect most of the classical Star Destroyer weak spots, like the underside or the trench in the middle. Even the raised bridge is somewhat better protected than other Star Destroyers and the superstructure is the middle looks sturdy enough. Also, unlike the Executor, this doesn't have the "cityscape" running through the middle of the ship and it looks like most of it's surface is heavily armored than other Star Destroyers. Personally, I would pick this between this and the Executor when it comes to smart design.

    It's kind of ironic when you think about it given that there was an executor class super star destroyer that survived not only the galactic civil war but the war between the new republic and imperial remnant and the vong war and was still in active service into the legacy era which was a 100 years after the battle of yavin. So that giant ship survived longer then he and his rule did but then the irony in that is that the new republic adopted his rule.
    Having smaller ships and medium sized multi-role ships is good and all but it does help to have a battleship/dreadnought or two to help because they can turn the tide of a battle especially when strategy isn't enough.
    Plus Thrawn is the exception not the rule his strategic genius was so great that if was often thought that he had the ability of foresight, most generals in any franchise could only hope to be at that level.

    The thing I find interesting about Star Wars ships is the engines. Bigger ships have larger or more engines yet, in space, smaller ships with smaller or less engines still fly at a faster speed than the larger ships, despite the fact that the same thrust and weight dynamics on a planet to not apply to space. Large ships with large engines/engine arrays should be faster than ships like the millennium falcon but they aren’t due to size requiring more thrust even in the vacuum of space.

    Excellent video Meta =) I like most of Ansiel's Hsiao models although he tends to exaggerate in weapon emplacements transforming most ships in a WW II kinda battleship, which is not a complaint or necessarily bad, but i personally like a more balanced aesthetic with functionality. Example: The Executor SSD, has thousands of weapon emplacements but they are "discreet", we can spot some of them but mostly blend with the ship's surface.
    I'd love to see what Thrawn would do with such powerful ships like SSDs at his command. It seems to me that in current canon, the Grand Admiral rank lost some power and status when compared to it's legends counterpart. =(

    The Assertor is a tough little cookie to break relative to the Executor, due to the sheer amount of weapon emplacements. With this said, as far as I recall, she still has a lackluster point defence system, leaving her vulnerable to yoloing A-wings.
    I think the largest ships Thrawn would consider acceptable are the Bellator and the Secutor: the former because she is fairly flexible for a ship of that size while the latter because she would be able to carry a lot of TIE Defenders, potentially enough to smash most rebel scums by themselves.

    What makes any Super Star Destroyer, or any large Battleship from our history work, is fleet support. You need to surround your massive ships with a screen of large, medium and small ships to cover each and every firing degrees and engagement zones. This is typically why the Empire loses SSD's to begin with as they don't properly support their ships.
    What makes a SSD so effective beyond its psychological impact is the sheer firepower and force multiplication it bring. It can bring its superior arsenal to bare on a target and with the support of the fleet, destroy that target in very timely manner and then move on to the next target. And while being a bigger target can be a disadvantage, it can also be an advantage as well. See, if everybody focuses on shooting the big thing, they'll ignore everything else.
    Couple this with powerful shielding, and your SSD can draw the fire of an enemy fleet, shield its own fleet, and then return fire with interest while being supported by its own fleet. However, this can only be done if you properly support it in the first place!

    Compared to the Death Star, I think an Asserter Star Dreadnaught is a far better and less costly alternative. You always need to have a biggest stick available if you're gonna get in fleet engagements.
    If I was an Imperial flag officer (a Grand Admiral or even a lesser ranked flag rank such as a High Admiral or Fleet Admiral), having an Asserter Star Dreadnaught, 2 Bellators with Venator and Victory Star Destroyer escorts as pursuit units, a few ISD Mk. IIs and almost a dozen gunships are all I'd need to bring a fight to any enemy fleet. Having TIE Defenders, Skiprays, and huge swarms of TIEs (it'd be nice if I could at least outfit each one with shields) could effectively nullify an enemy's snubfighter screen.
    Thrawn, even if he isn't a fan of Star Dreadnaught concept, could at least appreciate the level of firepower and intimidation a fleet like I mentioned would bring if it's in the hands of a very competent commander. Even Thrawn would excel in using a fleet this.
