A canon ship that's literally a *cannon* ship.
Damn, beat me to it...

Marry me.
Our ships already look like arrows, let’s make a ship that looks like a crossbow.
Brilliant!
GENIUS!!!
Hold on! What if we also made it a double barrel shotgun too? A-and a sniper rifle! A double barrel crossbow-shotgun-sniper!!!
Following that logic the onager must fire star destroyers
@@davidthewhale7556 No, but that logic DOES mean this Star Destroyer destroys stars :)
Not literal stars though. The targeting computer marks long distance targets with stars and annihilates any marked objects or locations. It's a technicality, but a fun one... The military grade computer developers drink alot...
Arrow heads
I like how the Alliance originally dismissed the idea of the Death Star, thinking it to impractical to be real.
"The empire wouldn't do that, they're not stupid."
The empire:
Reminds me of what people thought about actually using nuclear weapons in war before the americans did it.
"Send your fighter , with the strongest plot armor , here." Lmfao this is soo true

BTW: Heat and Vacuum don't mix well. Its extremely difficult to disperse heat in deep space because you have no natural convection of any kind. Vacuum is an allmost perfect insulator (that's how a good Thermos works). The only way is by radiation. Those big as panels on the ISS? About half of them are Radiators for radiating heat in form of infra-red "light" to cool the station. Otherwise the astronauts would cook to death.
So, "leaving spaces open for cooling" isn't a viable solution to waste heat. (Thats why I always liked to think, that the TIE-Fighter Panels were large Radiators to disperse heat, or that the S-foils of X-Wing open in attack mode to generate more space to radiate the weapons waste heat)
Yeah those are some really good points
On the other hand, I believe it's also possible that those open space were made so that the major portion of waste heat from weapon bolt will simply radiate away into space. If the gun was fully enclosed, any part of weapon energy that was generated but didn't leave the end of the barrel will heat up the gun, and the ship. For a weapon of such magnitude, it going to be a big problem, much more so than conventional turbolaser, and potentially much more than a ship that size can manage properly. (Probably the reason why Death Star was so ridiculously big. Most of its volume probably dedicated to heat management system) Leaving the gun barrel open, with only some galvenning (seriously?) ring and something to energized and direct the bolt, would allow a large amount of those wasted energy to radiated directly into space, without heating up the hull, and leaving whatever space-magic heat management system on the ship with acceptable level of heat that it can manage away safely.
I think the S-foils on the X-Wing thing is canon, or at least legends
@@PaiSAMSEN True: An open "barrel" would be better than a closed one. But not by much. It's all about surface area. Each radiation panel of the ISS is a few times the surface of the complete station. So just leaving the "barrel" open wouldn't be enough (I also think the interior is quite sparse on this model). Thats why I allways likes the idea of the TIE-fighters panels being radiators. The surface is so big compared the the rest of the fighter (also: solar panels don't make much sense if you are not in spitting distance of a star. In our solar system they aren't even an option if you want to go farther than Mars) What would be a great idea is some kind of grebeling around that "barrel" which looked like it was supposed to maximise surface. Exposing that to space instead of enclosing it in armour would make sense and give the design some credibility.
Yes, but you're talking about the real world. In the Star Wars Universe, heat is not a problem. That's the advantage of science-fiction. There are so many things scientifically wrong in Star Wars. But movies are made for fun, not to portray reality. So I simply enjoy them, without over thinking.
I mean i could definitely see the next plot armour wielding rebel just flying down the chamber, dodging the alternating rounds from both barrels, firing at the last second and flying up through the open split, taunting the captain on the way before the catastrophic explosion takes the whole ship.
10/10 Imperial Design.
@@khadenallast4495 If the battle of Samar keeps on happening in your story, then it stops being impressive.

In the real world we suffer the threat of Nuclear weapons, while in Star Wars it's Super Weapons.
Nuclear weapons are super weapons. In the West they were caled Super weapon experiments, meanwhile in Germany it was called the wunderwaffe.
@@PugilistCactus: Well than it would be Planet Busting weapons, for Star Wars than.
@@thedarkknight727 anything capable of mass devastation would be a super weapon.
@@PugilistCactus: But still, it shocks me that within the lore of one of our many beloved childhoods, people are willing to destroy entire Soler Systems than to share even the smallest pice.
I guess on Earth all we have is continents so weapons that can wipe out cities at a time or multiple cities is classed as a super weapon scale wise. But when you have an entire galaxy of planets, nuclear bombs don't really seem that super any more. When you then start talking about a weapon that can destroy an entire planet, that is a super weapon. And I'm sure beyond that could be a universe dominating race that has weapons that could destroy entire galaxies, so a planet destroying weapon would be a like bringing a BB gun to a nuclear bomb fight. It's all about the scale you are comparing it to.
Basically, a railgun that is powered by crystal.
In some semblance or form. Other than the fact that rail guns do not posses open barrels and use electromagnetic forces to propell a projectile to great velocities.
Tempted to get the Star Wars armada model of this ship, to balance out the Starhawk on the rebel side. And I was actually wondering if Thrawn would like this ship, but I guess he would! Also could you imagine having a starfighter battle around this ship & having the fighters fly through the ship’s guns?
Thrawn would admire this warship.
Echo's Datacore No, he would modify it to his own tastes. Starting with arming the hell out of it with anti-starfighter weaponry.
@@gregorylumban-gaol3889, ha... Lancer Frigates work the best.
Echo's Datacore Sometimes, even the Lancer would fail. It’s best to prepare for the worse.
@@gregorylumban-gaol3889, The ship was just introduced. Give it time, still, Grand Admiral Thrawn would admire it. Its like the Aggressor-Class Star Destroyer that Grand Moff Tarkin designed which Admiral Thrawn admired as well.
A sniper that shoots massive light saber bolts through mountains in order to cook Bacon... there its cooler. ^__^
So we have an Imperial ship that’s
A) Practically designed with clear logic behind each design choice
B) Under 1000 meters long
C) Is very powerful without being completely broken
D) Can be made in fairly large numbers
E) Fills a role that was unfilled in the era until now
F) Has minimal design issues, most can be explained by the vessel being meant for super-long range engagements/at the back of formations.
G) Looks awesome.
17/10. Would captain.
So the “galvaning” here is kind of like a magnetic containment field… that would actually explain a lot, especially why there are two kinds of combat shields in Star Wars. With plasma based weapons the main drawback with them is that the technology needed to create a containment field could also be used in an upscaled version to break the containment field of incoming fire. Ray shields to break containment fields and Particle shields closer in to absorb any high velocity particles hitting over a much larger area which would reduce the ability of the particles to punch through.
“Blow deep through solid rock”
Oh I’ve got to get a copy of that data, that’s going to be so much fun to calculate the yield.
Also 643 meters long?
That’s 1 meter longer than the _Galaxy_ class starship from Star Trek.
I’d give it a 9/10. Would give a 10/10 if given anti-starfighter weaponry so it can defend itself in the event its escorts failed.
Also, fancy seeing you here. Hopefully it’s not just a coincidence, but fimfiction’s been quiet since the Old Guard left.

So now there’s 3 Redshirt047s. Hella confused.
The real length of this ship was actually in the 4 kilometres range, the star destroyers where just drawn to give it a kinda scale and an escort for the ship
I really like the Onager-class’ design. It looks real menacing.
The description of it being able to fire "beyond long range" is meant for the game (Armada) itself. There are 3 ranges in the game and this cannon will probably be able to fire from a even longer range
I've seen their statement about it, you put a token down at long range and then you measure from the token instead of the ship.
This thing is effectively artillery, and without good targeting data it won't hit enemy ships very well, as for bases once you figure out that this thing exists you'll stop putting permanent bases on planets and rely on more mobile bases either in space or on different parts of the planet. It does look like it could be effective if used in conjunction with other ships in a larger battle but it is a big target.
cool toy but i prefer my torpedo spamming sphere
Idk why but I thought they added the Onager and Starhawk Armada kits because they would be upcoming in RoS
We all wished...
Now make it red and it can be manned by the new sith troopers in rise of Skywalker
I like the idea of seeing a ship that is a precursor to the Mandator IV Dreadnought that the First Order used. It can be argued that the Onager introduced the super gun but the ship had to aim itself to fire it. The Mandator put them on a turret to solve it. The only catch was with this powerful Onager, is why did it not show up at Hoth? Introducing such a ship is awesome but Hoth would have been blown to pieces by this thing even with a shield and ion cannon to protect it.
Just when I thought I had an original idea for a ISD with a gaint railgun on it...
Can you compare the siege breaker and the silencer project from the sith empire during the old republic.
Omg yes
Brian Walsh shows that someone at Lucasfilm knows their lore
Shit silencer had the better variant that shoots trough hyperspace tho
Probably what inspired it.
If the cannons need to radiate heat, a solution to the open design would be *radiator panels* arranged along the surface of the ship.
Yes they could still be taken out by fighters, but that wouldn't cause the kieber to detonate, it would just limit the full power that could be used for subsequent shots. And not even that if it was overengineered with extra panels.
Then you would need the level of plot armour of Luke or Han to fire straight down the barrel while dodging incoming shots, and if you stick a bunch of laser cannons on the front wings of the T section to deal with that, then it becomes TESB.
The reason the hangers open to the back may be to protect them from the radiation ect of the cannon firing. As well, you don't want to launch forward and break towards the centerline of the ship.
After all the _noise in space_ of them firing would be deafening to nearby pilots.
"360 no-scoped by the Empire's lightsaber-shooting sniper ship" is still gold
In the fantasyflightgames website it read
Onager-class Star Destroyer Expansion Pack
The Onager-class Star Destroyer is a specialized platform for some of the Empire’s most dangerous weaponry. The arrival of its ominous silhouette in orbit heralds a bombardment by massive particle cannons, or, more rarely, a devastating pulse from superheavy composite beam turbolasers. Its deployment in more sensitive Imperial operations can be neither confirmed nor denied.
It only has one superheavy composite beam turbolasers. So I the picture that has the two meanings must of being massive particle cannons, that he one talk about but is right there
“Initiate phase one”
“Power up the bass cannon”
“F I R E”
That part with the phantom menace, I liked that
A flying double-barrel-hunting-rifle...with hangers!? Nice!
Can’t help but associate this ship with the “Aggressor-class Star Destroyer”.
Wanna do a side-by-side comparison?
Maybe a versus?
Need a really big gun?
The Ion Blast of the Aggressor would make that quite versatile in Ship to Ship Combat
Star Destroyer reminds me of the The Conqueror (A modified Imperial-class Star Destroyer - most likely Imperial II-class equipped with a Superlaser likened to the one utilised on the First Death Star).
Insert statement about it being insignificance against the power of the force here!
Why do all the new Empire ships, weapons and troopers look so much cooler than the boring First Order designs? This ship looks awesome!
Lol I was thinking that
Bruh you gotta cover the star hawk, we've all been itching to learn about this ship for 4 years now, and I'm sure you'll knock it out of the park like you did with this video
I heard of Star Destroyers but their own real guns in the Legends comic as well as a mini super laser that could destroy the surface of a planet; it is really cool to see some of these in the Empire at War mods just like all the other news stuff that we've been getting!
This star destroyer definitely has design flaws as you pointed out. Still, a very useful star destroyer to have around as long as it stayed out fighter range and fired from distance. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
“Empire wouldn’t build one big Kyber weapon.”
Woo! I love these long-form videos from you guys
10 min video no midroll adds love you bro keep it up
What do you think of the Starhwak MetaNerdz?
This ship honestly looks to me like either a Crossbow or a giant Rail-gun, either way I like how it looks exactly like what it is, no ambiguity, just one look and you know "that's she ship with the shield busting guns"
FYI, the "beyond long-range" comment is in reference to the game mechanics of Star Wars Armada, the miniatures game that this ship was designed for.
*"And you'll be like"*
Honestly I like how it looks like a flying space crossbow...
I think the main weaponry might use so much energy, that any auxiliary weapon they can place wouldn't be enough and it's just more efficient to focus on shields and have a bunch of ti-fighters and a few escorts ships follow it than to upgrade the generator and having to change the hull in a more drastic way than it already has been.
The Onnager is what the Xyston should have been. It looks cool, it's no a reheash of an existing design though clearly inspired by the Imperial arrowhead aesthetic, and it serves the superweapon function perfect for a secretive Sith fleet project. For that matter, the Onnager is what the Eclipse needs to be in canon, not the Legends Dark Empire crap we got.
I like this ship so much I’m getting a custom gmod map made of it and it’ll be my servers base map!!
Looks like something I'd wanna see in an Empire at War mod
Grand Admiral Thrawn in Legends & Canon would greatly admire this warship
I disagree. This vessel is another poor example of the Tarkin Doctrine that Thrawn disagreed with. He would have gone for more effective warships that were versatile than a specialized ship that's very crippled by its design. He would prefer Bellators or Assertors.
@@lba_e_ross2152, First off, 😆
Second off, Thrawn hated big ships
Third off, he would of course request improvements, and would have kept it far back, so there.
Lastly, we don't know so much of the ship either, like its shielding.
@@lba_e_ross2152The Bellator is my favorite dreadnought, too. So is the Eclipse.

Did this inspire the first order ships? Also this is a cool ship. Great video
Yeah this thing was the the inspiration for the siege dreadnaught
No. First order ships are the definition of uninspired
Gerardo Reyes Possibly, I really hope we see this bad lad and the StarHawk in the Rise Of Skywalker
@@wilsthelimit well the ship is really old

I like this ship. I do want to see it in action in future Star Wars material.
I wonder when we’ll get to see New Republic ships in film or television. Here’s hoping Episode 9 has a Endor sized space battle between the New Republic and First Order.
Nice breakdown.... I would have designed it differently but I do like the idea
Interesting video!!
Based on the type of weapon (the nature of the plasma ammunition) this is, the galvanizing system is probably something that can strengthen magnetic fields - as that is the sort of thing you would use to encase a plasma bolt or the like. Maybe?
I think the fact that it lacks anti-fighter point defense may be down to the fact that the ship power generator can only operate the main weapon, the shield, engine, and other targeting components
And let’s not forget that this thing will be supported by a large number of escorts.
Starcraft called and they want their Terran Battlecrusier back
It was around 1,200 meters. And it was introduced in the early empire days to help with dug in sepritist holdouts.
The design concept kinda reminds me of unsc ship design doctrine, a ship built around a really big cannon
I misread it as "Empire's NEW GROOVE" for some reason.
This is proof that Canon Star Wars Ships have the firepower teratons of TNT.
Weird it is called an Onager ( throwing arm) when it looked so much like the Roman weapon called a Ballista (giant crossbow) or a Scorpio (a light 'rapid-fire' Ballista)
I feel like due to the weapon draws power directly from the reacter. Maybe it doesn't have a lot of power leftover, to power enough anti-fighter weapons to deafened itself.
Came back 1 year later to say remember when we all thought this was the blast in TROS trailer? And we're super excited? But then got a scaled up ISD one with a big ol' cannon instead? Yeah me too
how new and exciting. the empire has an even bigger laser and it’s up to the rebels to destroy it. I cannot wait for new, bigger laser
Without joking fallen order re awakened my love for star wars
It looks awesome
i might not like the empire but no doubt they god the best toys and the coolest ships
Gee wish we could see more of this
Love everything about the ship....I myself would put some type of protection below...its weak underneath
I don't know if I can choose between this, the Victory-1, the Venator, the Nebula, or the CR-90, for my favorite Star Wars non-fighter ship. They're all awesome. Imagine a crossover with Robotech/Macross where the main gun is replaced with a Reflex Cannon or something.
I like this as its well designed or its job ( to snipe every small chunk of a rebel base while being away rom the action) and how it shows not all the empires ship designers were plonkers who lived by the tarkin doctrine .
Hey could you do a video on the Empire Scimitar Assault Bomber
Spongebob:I didn’t want to do this, but IM COMBINING THE BEAMS!!!
they probably wouldnt have power enough for point defense cannons
I think those prongs in the front should hinge so that they cover up the end of the cannon and those metal plates should slide over the heat dispersal thing when the giant cannon isn’t in use, giving it a more triangular shape and not exposing it to enemy fore
Looks like the carrier Midway from Wing Commander Prophecy.
Maybe inspired by this?
And at the end of the game the Midway even has a huge crystal at the same place this ship has its supergun, also working as a kind of siege weapon.
I don’t know this ship thank you for this please do the star hawk next
It looks very similar to one of the Wing Commander ships. The one from Wing Commander Prophecy i think. The TCS Midway. Also having a giant crystal in the middle they used as a weapon.
Great ship. I thought it was the source of the red beam in the TROS trailer but slas it wasnt to be.
Would ne nice to see it in a future Star Wars series
I think the reason why this ship has no defence weapons is that it is so specialised. What you should do is pacify the space around the target world, then bring in this weapon. It fires it's guns and then leaves. It does not fight in battles and if they give it weapons for defence then someone might think it can be used during a battle.
I just realized the name "Rakehell" is probably a reference to the prototype ship in legends
So much like other pieces of artillery it makes sense that it wouldn’t have so many defensive capabilities. I think the entire point of it was that it wouldn’t be in the heat of battle because it would be deployed far away.
I think the argument for the lack of defensive turrets will be something along the line of "power demand" and that the ship requires so much power for the cannons other systems have to be offline etc. Every super weapon needs a weakness/critical flaw ;)
Considering that the Onager was created for long range bombardment and support the lack of point defense is acceptable as it would unlikely be on the front lines of a engagement and any starfighter squadron that makes through the front lines would likely be weakened and be easily defeated by TIE squadron.
Let’s talk about how the first order should have just forget about the resistance base and had the dreadnought fire on the radis first
That way their would be no where to run with the people left on the base
And the star destroyers bombard the base
unless of course they weren't aware if the base had any kind of hidden armaments like an ion cannon that could disable their ships. Or didn't know how far along the evacuation was and sought to destroy any possible reinforcements that were still grounded. Because after all, what's the point on firing on the Radis if its shields could likely take the hit. Then it jump into hyperspace. Then find out, "Ohh, there are more people down there. Too bad we have to recharge the guns and they are getting away."
Vulcan Studios the star destroyers should have at least moved to block the radius and engaged her
With those horizontal hammer heads, I'd call it more of a "Ballista" than an "Oniger". Or maybe a gigantic Wookiee crossbow energy rifle.
At first glance, it looks like someone kitbashed 3 Star Destroyers in a T-shape. However, I like the idea of the hammerhead portion of the ship having hangar bays that release fighters towards the aft of the ship, rather than the front: this could make the ship harder to damage... maybe?
Oh, it's beautiful.
Nice looking ship. In the hangars what kind of fighters would be available? The basic Tie?
Could be the weapon array itself disrupted the use of AA turbolaser turrets if placed on or near the cannons. And with it having a long range, it wouldn't be necessary for it to be so close to the front of the fleet so it can be protected behind layers of defensive ships in the fleet.
I still think it looks like the TCS Midway.
Just with a lighter grey for the paint job.
So, what you were saying about the reactor and the crystals focusing power. It was literally intensifying forward firepower. :D Should be renamed the Admiral Piett class then
An interesting limitation would be that the star destroy would have to return to it's based to recharge its weapon
It could recharge on its own power but it would take about a decade
I love the design in almost every aspect EXCEPT the bridge. Other than that its cool
Indeed. Though I am not a fan of Dinsey's new direction for Star Wars in general, this model will make a fine addition to my collection.
@@randomcenturion7264 Hello there 😂
I wished they showed this ship in episode 9
The design reminds me of the hammerhead seen in KoToR but only the head is sideways.
So it’s like the first order dreadnought. Awesome!!!!!
So, basically the heavy ventral cannons on the Dreadnaught from Last Jedi (may its name be forever a curse).
Can you make a video on how the galven system may work
