After 6 months with a DSR, my favorite part of riding isn't how screaming fast you can go (new Zero motors sound like a jet engine taking off to go to warp speed, 0-60 in 2.6!), but how SLOW you can go... no gear changing, clutching, engine noise, vibration, fumes... electric is so fun.
Good review. We as electric bike owners need to stop trying to claim these are touring motorcycles. I'm sorry, but they are not. I've had my '18 SR for 14 days shy of two years and I am on track to average 5,500 miles each year (i'm a couple hundred shy of 11,000 miles) which is a little on the higher end for average miles rode per year for motorcycle owners. The only charging equipment I use is the Level 1 charger that comes standard on the SR. Think it's 1.3 KW charger. Never had any issues keeping the bike charged to where I need it to be which usually in the 40 to 80% SOC. Thoughts aside, if I had money to burn, I'd upgrade to an SR/S... probably. Oh, and thanks for showing what the tank looks like underneath with the extra charge tank installed. Have not seen that yet.
Range is definitely relevant, my KTM 990 has twice the range at motorway speeds. Means I can visit friends and family members that live 170-200m away with a single stop at most. Not so on the Zero - especially when I normally sit at 70-80 mph. I have ridden the DSR and did enjoy it, but it's just not practical enough for a quick visit to anywhere more than a charge away.
We traded KTM 1290's for Energicas. Trust me, one thing you will not miss is the HEAT those KTM engines generate in the summer. KTMs are basically a rolling bbq.
@@letsreviewit8925 The City Range is a claimed 160 m (200 m with power tank) according to the Zero website, I don't fancy doing 30mph along the motorways.
@@OrlandoRick I know what you mean! I've ridden mine across Spain in the heat of summer, but you don't really notice it at motorway speeds. You do in town though! That fan blowing it all on my your right leg....
My SR/S hasn’t reliably quick charged at 12kW in the last 6 months of ownership. Needs to go to the shop a 4th time as it goes over 2 months of I’m shop repair time.
There is some nice camera work and I can tell that a lot of effort went into the production of this review. Unfortunately I'm compelled to comment on the dialogue in a less than positive manner. The comparison between charging a mobile phone and a motorcycle was a big mistake. For a start, it is a lot more convenient to charge a phone and for most people they will manage a day of use before needing a charge. This is not the case with the SR/S when touring. There are factual errors; the motor puts out 110bhp, not 120. The charge time with the chargetank is an hour to 95%. 40 minutes is more like the best case scenario from 20-80% providing you use a 3 phase AC charger that can provide up to 7kW per phase. These are quite scarce. When considering an electric motorcycle for touring, range and charging times are very important. It was a mistake to gloss over this and besides, we all mourn the days when our phones would last a week between charges. Unless a bike can do at least half a day's touring before being charged during a lunch break, then range is going to be an issue. The 70 miles covered with 40% charge left in this review is very misleading. Those miles must have been covered at a very steady pace. You'd be lucky to plan 70 miles between stops on the motorway with an SR/S. Less when charging to 80%. This review would have been much better if the facts were correct, it was more like 20 minutes long and without the misdirection around range. I hope that helps as it could have been great, with all the effort that was made with the production quality.
Thanks for your comments. With the exception of horse power, which was a mistake on my part the rest was tested in real world scenarios over 3 days. We try to keep our videos focused on what’s important for us and sometimes it’s not always possible to show every detail. There are so many other reviews that talk about the specifics and range I didn’t want to just make another video repeating the same information. Our film is more about what the bike is like for day to day use and of course it’s entirely subjective and not everyone will agree with me hence I suggest people try it for themselves. Regardless thanks for watching
@@letsreviewit8925 mathematically the bike cannot charge 0-100% in 40 minutes. The battery has a capacity of 114Ah (Amp hours). The chargers deliver up to 114 Amps. Which means a maximum of 1 hour. If it tries to go over 114 amps the BMS will disengage the battery. These are the hard facts of the matter.
Wow, fantastic video. It feels like an add you'd get a the cinema, very high quality. Great advice for the bike as well. It's helpful to have such clear and concise comparisons for fuel vs electric.
I still want to know the range!!!!!!! From 10 miles to 80 miles?????Something. I want to know - hammering it like a hooligan - how far will it go? Riding in eco mode taking it easy- how far? 75 mph on the highway- how far will it go????? I would only consider an electric bike if it could do at least 150 miles with some highway and some backroads, some slow, some fast riding. If the bike is rated at 150 miles, what are the specs? Is that 40 mph steady on a flat road? I need more detail, not “it’s irrelevant”!!!!!!!!
The truth is on a long motorway trip you'd have to crawl along at 45 - 50 to get anything like a decent range - hit 80 and I reckon you'd be lucky to get 80 miles from a charge - that means for me I'd rather pay the premium in servicing and fuel costs for ICE for now
The comment about long journeys and the need for planning says it all, my Moto trips are more fluid and not planned so until either I can have a 300 mile range (including fast motorway speeds) and a 20 min charge time I will be staying with ICE for my Moto trips. If I was a commuter then I can see the point and yes I'd be rushing out to buy one despite the hefty price that seemingly doesn't include heated grips??!!
Bruce Cutts like I say in the video this bike isn’t for everyone, but it will get better with time. I also say in the video that it does have heated grips 😬
Another great review thankyou🤗 I do like the idea of electric cars and bikes. I believe they can live side by side and people should have the choice and not pushed in any particular direction to meet some agenda. I'm not into all this electric is green BS. All the plastic is made from oil, all the metal comes from the ground and is formed and worked using coal. All made in oil and energy sapping factorys. Not forgetting most of the electricity to charge the bikes comes from coal burning power stations. I have not even touched on the minerals mined for the on board computers. But I digress, I do like the idea of electric bikes, and I would like to have a go on one my self. Just have to cut the save the planet BS.
Ye old chief no it’s because there are hundreds of reviews that just talk about range and nothing about what it’s like to own and ride. It’ll do 100+ miles on a charge that’ll suit some and not others it’s been said a million times
@@letsreviewit8925 well just say that rather than just leave it out. However, 100 miles still crap if you're then stuck waiting around 45 minutes to get going again imho, and definitely doesn't make it a tourer of any kind.
Just bought one... after test riding I was sold... absolutely a joy to ride...

Been riding electric for a few years now, don't really see me ever buying a new petrol bike again. Maybe I'll keep one around for nostalgia.
