  • Smartphone cameras are better than ever and are generally nearly as good as a small handheld camera, especially with features like 4K video, portrait mode, and night mode. But what you might not know, or might not be fully comfortable with, is Pro Mode. Smartphones have this advanced mode hidden away in the camera settings for photographers who are used to working with the more manual controls that their DSLR cameras offer. The default automatic mode on phone cameras is plenty for most people, and it’s intelligent enough to pick the right settings for the moment. But to have full creative control and get the perfect shot, Pro Mode is here.

I’ll be recording this on a Samsung Galaxy, but the process, controls, and best practices will be similar across other Android devices. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn’t have a Pro mode, but you’ll still be able to find some of these settings in your camera app.

Thanks for this intro. I wonder whether I can make pro-mode the designated way to use my Galaxy S22+, or do I have to designate it every time I open the camera. It was particularly useful to me as soon as I discovered it, at an indoors bluegrass concert.

Samsung galaxy pro mode is the way to go. The reviews from what I've seen is on the camera out of the box. Which is default settings compared to let's say iphone. Android goes much deeper. Especially Samsung phones. You have more control of what you see on the screen will be be the actual photo.

As someone getting started, would it make more sense to shoot RAW and edit in Lightroom using the info you provided or should I fiddle in pro on the spot? I feel like editing at an amature level on the spot could be quite time consuming

Personally, I prefer RAW, but I mostly shoot with a DSLR. When I am using a phone, I pretty much always just edit in camera whether it is Pro mode, etc. It's just more efficient. Unless you need drastic edits, or you want to recover a lot of light/shadow detail, shooting in Pro should suffice. Hope this helps!
