@@jmadratz Many years ago Redford might have been a conservative before Republicans lost their minds but not in recent years. Redford endorsed both Obama and Biden for president, and has been publicly VERY critical of Trump saying "he lacks a moral compass". He also supports environmentalism, Native American rights, and LGBT rights. There is no way you can add up all that and call Redford a conservative today.

He gave it a venue, but Sam Goldwyn was an independent when he won Best Picture for Best Years of Our Lives in 1947 (he wasn't expecting to win because he was outside the studio system). Joseph E. Sundance allowed corporations access to buy independent film for distribution, but independent film had been around for decades, or we wouldn't have had Dwain Esper, Ed Wood or Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Mary Tyler Moore lost her son while she was in New York doing promotion for "Ordinary People". Her husband at the time, Grant Tinker, waited five long hours to call her, because it was 3am on the east coast (midnight on the west coast). No wonder some people wonder if Mary really was acting in the film.

I am very happy that Robert Redford won Best Director. I think the Academy should also have recognized his acting skills long ago and given him a Best Actor award, too. Redford will always be my favorite actor and now, director. -- Terri Johnson
35 years after Ordinary People, Redford has still not equaled his first venture into filmmaking, proves you can make a quality movie without violence, sex or drugs, simply real people with real problems
Ordinary People meant a lot to me on a personal level. It was and is a beautiful and meaningful film still to this day. Judd Hirsch was great as the caring psychiatrist who challenged Conrad to forgive himself for his survivor's guilt and accept the limitations and imperfections of the ones that he loved.
AND, he did it without any drugs, unlike all the psychiatrist's/doctors that give out drugs like candy. He made Conrad work through his problems, not medicate him to death.
The reason why Robert Redford deserved this award even more than the picture itself: It's all about DIRECTing. I have never seen another movie, where a DIRECTOR gets so much out of such kind of a cast. I have nothing against Timothy Hutton or Judd Hirsch, but be honest: Their performances in Ordinary People are by far the best of both of their careers. Mary Tyler Moore plays a character nobody ever would have believed she would be capable of. Just a reminder: Moore was at the time an actress famous for TV comedy series like the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Transforming her charming personality in such a "perfect unlikable" mother, which we hate for her actions and admire for the acting, is simply astonishing. And even Donald Sutherland did one hell of job, although the tone of the movie wasn't new ground for him. To summarize: The reason, why such an unusual cast could have worked so perfect, is the marvelous direction by Robert Redford. And that's why he deserved this in my humble opinion (slightly) over Scorsese for Raging Bull.
I love Robert Redford. For all the people saying Scorsese should have won, he was fairly new to the Academy game while Redford had been considered snubbed by the Oscars for years. Redford wasn't nominated for several movies he should have been nominated for (The Candidate, Butch and Sundance, Downhill Racer, etc.) so it was about time the Academy gave him recognition. Scorsese's win came late, but so did Redford's. I'm glad he won.
That just isn't true!!! An absolute newcomer like John G. Avildsen (now remembered - if remembered at all - for "The Karate Kid") won the Best Director Oscar for "Rocky" - his first nomination for his first real mainstream film!!! He somehow defeated Sidney Lumet, Alan J. Pakula, Lina Wertmuller, and INGMAR BERGMAN!!! Another proof of the misguided, absurd Academy choices!!!
Just because the Academy has made some stupid choices doesn't mean they always pick the wrong man. I'm not saying Redford's direction in Ordinary People surpasses Scorsese's in Raging Bull, but that does NOT mean Ordinary People is a undeserved and mediocre film. Redford should have won an Oscar before the year 1980 and the Academy knew that.
He's done so much for and in the movie industry. He's much, much more than just one of the most beautiful looking men to have ever graced the screen/stage. A brilliantly intelligent, thoughtful and talented man who cares about giving back to the industry he's worked in, and the environment we live in.
What a career Redford has had. So many wonderful performances as an actor and a director. He nabs an oscar first time out. Ordinary People is an incredible film, as fresh and relevant today as when it first played 41 years ago.

I truly feel for Scorcese. Must suck to make such a great film and not get awarded but the truth is is that Ordinary People was a one of a kind film. There will never be another like it, while there will be so many films like a Raging Bull. Redford did a masterful job like no other and it is a gem of a story. I am so glad that the academy didn't just go with the popular and typical and gave the award to the man who most deserves it. One of my favorite films of all time. #masterpiece
Tough year. Tess, Raging Bull, and The Elephant Man are great films, but I'm glad Robert Redford and Ordinary People won big that year. Redford's contribution to independent film through the Sundance Institute is immeasurable and that might not have been possible without his success as a filmmaker
I like "Raging Bull", really like "The Elephant Man", but I love "Ordinary People". Can't complain that the director of the best film won here, although Scorsese and Lynch have had the better careers.
manhunter86 I know what you're saying. Raging Bull and Ordinary People are two of my favorite movies ever. 95% of Redford's skill as a director on this movie was his ability to work with the actors. He got great performances from them. But what Scorsese accomplished in terms of style, visuals, editing, sound, etc. on Raging Bull is unparalleled to this day.
Lynn Turman "Raging Bull" is the more "movie" movie:that is, there is hardly a second that you're not aware you're watching a movie. But the low-key naturalistic style suits the down-to-Earth story of "Ordinary People". Since "Ordinary People" has always moved me more, I give it the nod. Though Scorsese was working overtime in cinematic terms (I actually clicked more with "After Hours" than "Raging Bull").
Although Scorsese is an extraordinary director and could NEVER do wrong, I personally think that Redford deserved it. Those scenes with the tension between the Jarretts is truly amazing. Redford truly pushed his actors to reach those emotional chords.
Outstanding Entertainer and Director, this was when the Academy Awards had Class and 1981 was a wonderful year in the world! You'll Never Ever See Anything like This Ever Again PERIOD!!!!!
I saw this film when I was about 14 and it had me in tears because I just couldn;t stop identifying with what was going on ii my life and my family at the time with the Timothy Hutton't character and his family in the movie. As I grew older and matured I then saw Raging Bull and looking back I cant believe that after watching Raging Bull years later how Scorcese didn't win for best best director. Either way, both films has an influence on my life. More so Ordinary People because when you are in your teens and going through so much shit, your senses and your emotions are so heightened, that it takes a film so well acted and cast like Ordinary People to help you out of what feels like at the time as a lost wilderness.
Robert Redford, una de las maravillas que creó la naturaleza!!! Hermoso, inteligente, simpático,... Excelente y talentoso actor y director. Perfecto! Adorable! Toda mi admiración para este hombre!!

If he was a superhero, his superpower would be super handsome...
@@DesignerQoo That would be one of them. He also seems like such a kind and thoughtful guy.
I wish I could be that relaxed, mellow and zen.
It was no surprise Redford would direct an "ordinary" masterpiece From the very first I felt he was a very easy going deep human being beyond the celluloid image. Someone I would enjoy speaking with over a well crafted cold one.
Good actor, director, handsome, classy and down to earth.
Just watching that smile. What a thing of beauty.
I love Robert Redford.
Class act, Robert Redford. Just watched 'Three days of the condor' recently. I had forgotten what a great actor he was, as was Faye Dunaway.
she was a beauty...
Redford - one of my favorite people!
mary tyler moore best work ..... so glad robert redford cast her in this classic ..... will never forget the powerful ending of sutherland and timothy hutton sitting in the backyard and just embrace .... so subtle, so tender, so beautiful ..... mary, thank you for taking on this role. thank you for not allowing hollywood to cast you in limiting roles, instead, we saw the range of your acting abilities on full display for all to be moved by .....RIP
She was utterly AMAZING in that role!
I was just a kid when i saw this movie...Im old now....it has stayed in my mind...very intense...re-release now would be relevant with all the troubled youth in the world, shootings, bullying...
Six Weeks with Dudley Moore, was one of her best.
My nominations:
The Elephant Man
The Empire Strikes Back (WINNER)
Ordinary People
Raging Bull
The Shining
God should make a Robert Redford for every girl. 😌
🤣🤣
So charming!
Can we just talk about what a class act Redford is?
Redford really deserved this Oscar. Amazing movie. This was tough competition too. all five movies and directors were exceptional.
Classy. Eloquent. Talented
I love u, Robert Redford, very much beautiful. Great actor and director
Raging Bull is not a film that comes out once in a while. In fact, it should be the other way around with Ordinary People...
It's been 37 years ... Where are the other movies you said would be like Raging Bull? Another 37 years will pass, and it will remain the same.
happened again with Goodfellas
True.It was a masterpiece!
Apples and oranges. Two totally different types of films, both excellent and both deserving.
Mr. Redford deserved this Oscar and the Academy voted wisely.
Against the director of the greatest film of the 80s
Tough year. Tess, Raging Bull, and The Elephant Man are great films, but I'm glad Robert Redford and Ordinary People won big that year. Redford's contribution to independent film through the Sundance Institute is immeasurable and that might not have been possible without his success as a filmmaker
i love his voice
great hair day for Redford
What a beautiful man!
Two giants of film direction presenting the Oscar to a future giant of film direction.
I didn’t get to watch the Academy Awards that year and just saw this. So happy for Redford.
i liked 'Ordinary people' very much and still like it after all these years
So talented and gorgeous. Really good movie. Really a work of art.
That smile, oh! !
Handsome and talent Man 😍
I'm a huge Robert Redford fan and Ordinary People is one of my favorite movies of all time but Scorcese deserved this award.
But look at the beautiful scenes and how they were directed in Ordinary People. They were beautiful and Oscar-worthy.
Redford ❤ handsome
Robert Redford to the film industry is what Michael Jordan is to basketball. A true legend. It's been a privilege seeing his work.
Outstanding Entertainer and Director, this was when the Academy Awards had Class and 1981 was a wonderful year in the world! You'll Never Ever See Anything like This Ever Again PERIOD!!!!!
Such a Gorgeous man and a great actor/ director
Johnny really did such a wonderful job hosting the Oscars
I miss him!
Wow! Getting Cukor and Vidor to present an award!
Finally!!!! You guys post this!!!!! I've waiting for a long time of seeing this!!! Now could you guys post Miles Forman second Oscar win for directing as well as Barry Levinson for Rain Man!!!
robert redford is brad pitt's father!
we think the same in Spain, he is the precursor of brad, jajjaja
Yes he is
Kuring Kornelius
I don't think Mr Redford looks like Brad Pitt, though, they are both gorgeous in their own way .🌝
@@elizabethf1591 I prefer Brad's brother Arm.
*Apart from that, the Academy is reactionary nowadays, so what to say about at that time? Then this is the result: Ordinary People winning "best" directing.*
*It changed a little bit this year. A little bit.*
That all American smile!
Redford is Redford
Ordinary People deserved it for sure, Its the Mother of American Beauty
