    Loki’s first episode does a great job setting up the series, but leaves us with a few questions. Mostly: how the heck do timelines work in the MCU, and why aren’t the Avengers on trial? We break down how multiple realities work in the Marvel cinematic universe, and how it will affect Phase 4 movie forward. Why was it okay for Captain America to swipe an infinity stone and live out his life with Peggy, but poor Loki is turned into a prisoner with a job?

      Not only that, but the TVA is literally scrubbing (killing) entire universes with who knows how many lives because of 1 variant, that's just plain evil. Seeing how they treated and even killed other variants in the TVA like they are nothing makes Thanos look like a saint. And having a "soul scanner" makes it even worse. • @c.v.emmans
    @c.v.emmans 3 года назад +67

    The Sacred Timeline is more of a rope than a circle. The timeline has to be a little bit flexible, and among other things, this is why the TVA is needed. The Avengers were supposed to get the space stone, but Loki messed it up. In response, a split was created where they go to the 70s. That split (going to the 70s) now becomes a part of the sacred timeline, and the original timeline a branch that gets clipped, effectively turning it into a loop. It has to exist still, because otherwise there is no impetus for the Avengers to go the 70s-it's a part of Steve and Tony's timeline. The stones then got returned to their proper times, so nothing else splits.
    This suggests, that in order to balance itself, the sacred timeline is filled with little recursive loops and rejoining branches that sync back up with it in order to keep the consistency. There would be a loop in 2012 that gets closed when the space stone gets returned, and a branch that splits in 2014 then rejoins the Sacred Timeline in 2023 when Thanos travels forward. There has to be to preserve the timeline that led to these events in the first place.
    Tldr: the sacred timeline cannot be 1 linear timeline due to time shenanigans that are allowed.

    Y'know "clipping the branches" (putting the Infinity Stones back where they're "supposed" to be) doesn't mean severe damage isn't done. Look at the alternate-2014....sure Thanos & his entire army are dead, but Gamora isn't there...does this mean there's a good chance that Ego takes over the Universe...unless he never learns about Star-Lord cuz they never battle Ronan which is how he found out about him. IDK...it seems like "Loki" is making the already complicated time travel even MORE complicated.

Also thanks to SHIELD (& the Chronicoms) there's a whole new timeline where several Hydra people (both Malicks & Garrett) & Jiaying are dead. Plus Daisy doesnt get to be born since Jiaying is dead. With Daisy so heavily involved in multiple savings of Earth, wouldn't Deke's new job of running SHIELD in this timeline be really, REALLY hard??

      Ego will still find Star Lord even without knowing about his battle with Ronan. The Ravagers were still going to betray Yondu and hand Star Lord over to Ego like they were supposed to do back in 1988. Once Ego has him, then yes, he will still take over the universe.

      In my mind, just cuz it's not said outright, doesn't mean it didnt happen. For all we know, Daisy Johnson, Iron Fist, and Cloak & Dagger could've come out of 1 of those million portals in Endgame. Tony Stark didnt concern himself with every potential hero, so of course we wouldnt see him in Daredevil or Runaways.
      **Plus Edwin Jarvis, who started out on Agent Carter, was in Endgame. Technically, it doesn't prove 1 way or the other...but it's something to consider.

Perhaps having taken the stones created the TVA in the future. Since Loki broke off. I’m thinking everything exploded from Loki’s small gesture. Part of me wonders... if what the Averngers did was "supposed to happen" then shouldn't the effects of theit interference be subject to the same consideration. I mean Thanos discovers their plan and hops from the "past" timeline, possibly creating a variant universe where he vanishes, probably erased as soon as he leaves it, and then he and his forces are get snapped, essentially doing the TVAs job for them,) but he brought with him a whole other Gamora who _should_ be dead and is now loose in the universe. Also, there's Cap's life long Vacation with Peggy and the mysteriously appearing new Shield he came back with. Cap going back to replace the Gems might explain why the Avengers weren't prosecuted, but the effect of their meddling is still present.The "sacred timeline" also no longer has official Infinity Gems, so doesn't that mean the MCU is vulnerable? The TVA probably didn’t step in when Thanos turned the stones to atoms because doing so keeps the stones’ time-steadying power in timeline while greatly reducing anyone else’s ability to harness that power to attempt to alter the Sacred Timeline.
      Also we as viewers are experiencing the MCU timeline linearly. Maybe the Avengers altering the timeline results in the rise of Kang, and the resulting mayhem is what causes the founding of the TVA to retroactively maintain the Scared Timeline.

And also Thanos being snapped... did that actually happen? Or was it deleted from the "timeline" the moment Steve went back in time to return the stone to cut that new branch were 2014 Thanos went to their 2023 timeline to kill them with his army? Did loki really remove the infinity stone from the timeline or simply move it geographically from where it was in the original timeline? Seems like if the infinity stone is present at a point in time anywhere in the universe then it is still doing it's job of regulating the timeline. This would imply that you can branch a timeline without removing an infinity stone, simply moving it around the universe...

    • @Samuel2oh9
      @Samuel2oh9 3 года назад

      It’s not shown, but I’m assuming Loki traveled to a different timeline but still on Earth, a different Earth of course. That’s why it is therefore considered a crime since he removed the infinity stone from its corresponding timeline. If he simply changes location but remained in the same original timeline he was already in, it wouldn’t be a time crime.

    I keep seeing people ask about Cap's timeline and whether or not he creates a variant. I've been thinking about it myself and I think I've come to the conclusion he does. But his actions don't draw the attention of the TVA because he never does anything to disrupt the main timeline. He returns all the stones to their proper places in the main timeline, which restores its integrity. Then he returns to some point in the past in the main timeline where he can reconnect with Peggy. We don't know when that is, but we have to assume it based on the events that have already transpired as well as what we're given in this show. So while he is a variant existing alongside himself, albeit frozen for 70 years, he most likely keeps a low profile and purposely leads a quiet life so as not to draw attention to himself. He knows he has to be found in the ice and resurrected later, so if he makes his presence known to anyone but Peggy before any of that can happen, he will alter the timeline. He doesn't create a branch because he never does anything to cause one. I don't know how he knows what to do and not do, but reinserting himself in into the main timeline and living a full life with Peggy never disrupts it, so based on what this episode has told us, it therefore was always meant to happen. And because it was meant to happen, the TVA either doesn't notice, or they do, and don't care.
    It does seem like a bit of a copout, but at the same time, its consistent with what the video explains.

    Exactly!!! Something else is goin on in here. The avengers took the stones to a diffrent timeline . But loki was in the same reality. How i she responsible for anything over here? And when they say that what the avengers did was supposed to happen, what exactly do they mean? Does it mean that hulk smashing out of that door and crashing into 2023 tony and then the tesseract literally landing at loki's feet was bound to happen? Then how is it loki's fault?

    • @RicardoPetinga
      @RicardoPetinga 3 года назад +6

      Because the Endgame Avengers only slightly interfered in a calculated way that was meant to have no repercussions to that timeline since they planned to return the stones to when and where they took them from, and they did, and the only thing that didn't go according to that plan was Loki taking the Tesseract, because if they had taken it, like they intended, they would have returned it, but Loki wouldn't, therefore causing a significant impact in that timeline. Small differences are okay because they don't necessarily change the course of time, and Hulk smashing out of that door causing the Tesseract to land at Loki's feet was an accident that wouldn't have made a difference IF Loki hadn't chosen to take the chance to take the Tesseract. He's the one that messed up the Avengers' plan A and forced them to go with a plan B, not Hulk. I think Ryan explained this well in the video.

    I think there’s a tendency to give the stones too much credit. New timelines aren’t created only when a stone is removed, new timelines are created whenever someone time travels. Refer to the comment made by the hunter in Oklahoma about someone finding a time machine and using it to get rich; no mention of an infinity stone. The whole point of finding all the stones in the office drawer is to illustrate the new paradigm of power that the TVA represents. It’s also a clever way that fiege et al are using to show that the MCU is moving on from that storyline. They’re saying that the stones are only part of the story, and a much smaller part than you were previously led to believe.

    The time analogy works better with a hoolahoop. If you hold the hoop horizontally, it just looks like a straight tube. If you turn it vertically though, it becomes a circle

    Well said!! Explaining the concept of time as a flat circle is crucial to understanding the TVA. I agree- the variant Loki trying to destroy the TVA is our Antihero, & by the end, I expect the multiverse to exist again, setting up Battleworld.

    Yeah… Loki is basically the Dr. Manhattan manhandling timelines and the multiverse because vibes and art go off. Well written and beautiful.

    If you look at the background of the scene with Hulk and the Ancient One, you can see that the timeline is slightly rounded, which basically confirms your theory that MCU time is a circle.

    Hearing about this timeline and worldline thing reminds of Tetsuya Nomura's version of time travel in the Kingdom Hearts series

    8:29 Even Mobius name is a nod to the Möbius strip which is in itself endless. When you walk on it it seems linear but viewed from the outside you see the loop

    All it shows us is Loki taking the space stone to a different location I don’t remember him taking it out of the timeline

    He didn't remove it from the timeline though, he just used it to teleport to a different location

    Ryan, sorry if you went over this already, but when Thanos used the stones to destroy the stones, how did that affect the timeline (and why wasn't it in a noticeable way beyond high-energy detection) since the stones create the flow of time? Why is the current timeline, without infinity stones, not affected by their disappearance?

    Absolutely so so hyped for more of The Loki series , but also yeah apparently The Avengers were supposedly had to do the time travel thing cause of Thanos and they never got punished for it because of it

    The TVA hourglass logo also has lines that make it look like a stylized Moebius Strip.
