2014 CHRONOLOGICAL STORM EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
On average the United States reports roughly 1260 tornado touchdowns per year. 2011 reported 1691 tornadoes resulting in 553 fatalities... The deadliest year we've had since 1925 which saw 794. Then, 2012 broke records lows with only 939 tornadoes and 70 fatalities nationwide. 2013 broke that record low with 908 reports and only 55 fatalities. And then there's 2014...
Less than 900 tornadoes were reported in 2014 and only 47 fatalities. Over the roughly 50,000 miles traveled I was able to intercept 21 tornadoes (possibly 22), destroy only 4 windshields, ZERO speeding tickets and no food poisoning (knock on wood). The extremely photogenic storms and the low death toll makes this the greatest storm season I've ever documented.
APRIL 1: Lone supercell south of Throckmorton Texas tracking towards Woodson Texas producing a funnel cloud and outstanding cloud-to-cloud lightning.
APRIL 23: An elevated severe storm struggles to become surface based east of Wellington TX.
APRIL 28: An army of HP supercells marching 45+ mph through Mississippi... The strongest and deadliest tornado of the day struck Louisville Mississippi killing 10 people and causing substantial EF4 damage. While trying to assist victims in the destruction, another brief thin tornado dropped from a training supercell about 45 minutes later. I was away from my camera and didnt record it.
MAY 7: Time lapse of a supercell skirting the Red River and heading toward Waurika Oklahoma.
MAY 10: Time lapse of a brief weak tornado and a beautiful supercell near Latham Kansas.
MAY 11: The difficult to see EF3 that grazed Cordova Nebraska and hit Beaver Crossing Nebraska damaging virtually ever building in town.
MAY 26: A gustnado near Ackerly Texas.
JUNE 7: A brief cone tornado south of Tucumcari New Mexico.
JUNE 16: Twin tornadoes in Pilger Nebraska. The first tornado or Western twin struck Pilger dead on killing 1 person. The Eastern twin would later kill another. Both tornadoes reached EF4 strength. After vanishing into the rain for a minute or 2, a long snaky rope emerged. Some chasers argue that this is a different tornado, however I feel it is most likely the rope phase of the Western Twin. Damage path survey analysis also suggest this is 1 continuous tornado. The rope behaved like a satellite and was sling-shotted around a new developing tornado that would eventually skirt Wakefield Nebraska with EF4 strength before dissipating into the rain. Two weak tornadoes were intercepted East of Wakefield before the storm died in Iowa.
JUNE 17: Cedar County Nebraska tornado outbreak. The first tornado of the evening was a brilliant cone with a bending snaky rope-out. The second tornado was a weak brief rope and the third tornado was the main event in this tornado family near Coleridge Nebraska. Reaching EF3 status but most likely packing strong EF4 winds, this tornado tracked mostly through open terrain. It did however destroy several farmhouses killing livestock, debarked trees and scoured crops to the bare soil. The storms slow cell motion caused torrential flooding, but no fatalities. At dusk the first satellite tornado dropped Northwest of the parent tornado (Not seen here) and eventually the main tornado died, but another large multi-vortex wedge would form at nightfall. To the parents Southwest, a brief satellite would threaten Laurel Nebraska and then another long-lived satellite-ish tornado would form to the east and track to the north-northeast (I think). This is the long funnel silhouetted in the lightning flashes. A final large tornado (#8) would develop later that night before I bailed on the blackness under the base to shoot lightning. The lightning from this storm is hands-down the most frequent and amazing display I've ever seen.
JUNE 18: The third straight tornado outbreak in a row... 25 reports mostly occurring in South Dakota. Again, 2 tornadoes would touch down simultaneously but the main event was the white shape-shifting EF4 seen here near Alpena South Dakota. Two tornadoes were intercepted this day.

Pecos Hank, I wish you could go back to 1925 to capture the Tri-State Tornado for us.

What an amaizing quote omg- your narrations are just so wonderful and descriptive that they feel like fiction or like they're from a professionally produced movie/documentary-

Pecos Hank i don't really get tornados that swirl in my state to be honest now i might get rain and thunder tornado warnings.
Tornado's are such beautiful, simple, and elegant structures. They're like dancers, spinning across the land. They are alive, they choose to either destroy or leave alone. The Lightning is just absolutely breathtaking!
Yeah, until it kills you!
Jk.
+Stars and Rainbows TRUE LMFAO oh and your name reminds me of star in star vs the forces of evil XD

So true.
Jeeze, that was epic! I seriously think if you had longer 'episdoes' (say 30-35 minutes) you could outdo the successful Storm Chasers documentary/show easily, you are informative, the footage is so professionally done, and is so 'real' to the viewers, I think it's great you go it alone, means you don't have nutty people repeating 'TORNADO ON THE GROUND!' over and over again! :P
You are truly inspiring, and you keep my tornado obsession strong and true! :D
I appreciate the hell out of that Aiden. Keep that awesome feedback coming and I'll do my best to keep the footage coming.
I have to agree you're pretty dope and I love watching all of your videos

His videos would out do any weather related shows, these videos are so freaking fantastic. I guess that was a reference to Reed Timmer. He just needs to not drink so many caffeinated products, I have seen a few videos of his where he is very calm.

Once every like 3 or 4 months I come back and watch all of your videos. There isn't anything like it anywhere else. You are the common factor and everything about this channel is incredible. Subscribed for life.
Same here! I also like to re-watch iCyclone's hurricane videos too. He gives just enough info throughout the video without talking through it the entire time. It's why I also like Hank's videos. Like you and other people have said, it really is the best documentary style tornado footage you will find online.
This is abosolutly incredible. I have been fascinated by tornados since I was 7, and have never seen one in real life. (Even though once there was a REALLY close call RIGHT above my house) Your videos help me experience the tornados you film. You have just flat out nailed it. I have always wanted to go storm chasing, but for now, its the intriguing experience of your videos. Keep it up!
It's strange how we can be so attracted to tornadoes at such a young age. I dreamed of seeing just one tornado in my life time...
Pecos Hank Oh, and thank you Silent Flash!
Pecos Hank You're welcome!
Same dude. I used to watch video tapes of tornado footage as a 5 year old and always thought they were so cool. I live in the waaaay north east of the country so we never get anything here. I'd love to see one for myself.
Hemsfeld Custardale in kindergarten when i got home i turned on the weather channel XD
One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen was multiple black spirals attempting to touch down on the way to Death Valley in California. There were at least four, two at a minimum on either side of my Subaru within a couple miles of me. I drove faster than I ever have before to clear that area, but I was simultaneously awestruck at how eerily beautiful the event was.
(Mind you, these tornadoes were weak as hell compared to any of your footage, but for Nevada/California, yeah no. Rare and terrifying.)
watched this video 10+ times and 4:50 - 6:00 still gives me goosebumps. Awesome vid!
Heck, that's probably enough rolls to buy me a jolly rancher. thanks for watching Matthew.
Haha one Jolly Rancher? I should keep watchin' it over and over then, until you can get a rope strong enough to lasso a twister :D And thank YOU for being so awesome! Watching your vids is always a pleasure

Waffles You first. : )
You are a boss, there were 7 EF4’s in 2014, and you caught over half of them. You deserve a medal or something for that.
I prefer a hurricane over a tornado any day lol at least you have time to evacuate for a hurricane but a tornado will pop up out of no where
So true!
While a hurricane may be less powerful than the drill that is a tornado, hurricanes affect a much, much wider area and cause more overall damage. Think of it as a trade-off between size and power.
Yeah but coming from California we go earthquakes no warning what so ever with tornados at least you have some time to prepare and if you pay attention you can save yourself
But hurricanes are like a 12 hour long unrelenting tornado just battering everything above ground to shreds.
I live in Houston. During Hurricane Harvey we had 40 tornadoes touch down in one night. They weren't f-5 or anything, but hurricane winds, flooding, AND tornadoes spawned... the comparison is not really exact, because a hurricane contains those insane winds over a long period, and have tornadoes in it which are also part of that damage...
good thing theres no sharks around

Awesome production, very professional, unreal footage. Best time lapses I've ever seen. Ever.
Appreciate it Hunter. Good luck in 2015 dude.
Pecos Hank Same to you Hank -- can't wait to see what you capture this year!
You've got the best edited and narrated tornado videos on youtube. I've been into severe weather and storm sirens my whole life (I own an old FS Thunderbolt), and you've inspired me to take another step into the fray by attending a spotter course. Baby steps, but it ought to be fun stuff to learn. Also, fantastic music. Haunting, yet not distracting, really adds to the vibe!
Have fun at the spotter course.
Pecos... KEEP IT UP! The music you make is perfect for what you do. This is entertaining shit you have here

You keep so calm and composed while being informative when doing your chasing. This is by far the best tornado chasing channel I've ever come across. Keep up the good work!
I've always enjoyed the footage. And the music, (thank you!!). But it's your narration that totally makes the video work, Hank. Extreme kudos.
Like how you're not only recording and compiling videos of tornadoes, but also informing us about them. Glad to learn something while watching a nice video with beautiful music.
+Kyu Sho Thanks Kyu Sho! I appreciate the feedback.
Pecos Hank You're welcome. But really, I should be the one thanking you :D
Hi hi breed I'm anoying
I appreciate that you always mention the casualties. It keeps the idea in the forefront of our minds that this isn't just fun & games.
Damn Hank, you did it again. Even in the dead of winter you pounded out another fantastic tornado video. Excellent job (as usual). Your cinematography, editing, music and soothing baritone pipes create a hell of an experience. Thanks bud. Kyle
Thanks for the feedback Kyle. Happy New Year.
Hank, Coleridge Nebraska is absolutely my favorite on this video, the way you showed the after shots spliced in to the original footage. The way you describe that Tornado "Tornadoes move like something of the living, and our brains aren't able to process something this large and alive, SO WE STARE" by far the best way to describe my fascination with these unbelievable forces of nature. I thank you for your unique style and for the best Tornado video's on RUclips! I wish you the best and somehow we need to get you your own TV gig brother. Be safe out there for the 2015 Tornado/Lightning season...
Dude! Really appreciate this comment. Coleridge is hands-down my fave, ever! The thought of a smelly TV crew following my around jacking up my zen chasing isn't high on my priority list. Grateful to have the following I have here on youtube though. Wishing you the best in '15 as well. Chomping at the bit to get out there! 'Til next time Hidog...
Pecos Hank You bring up a good point man, no TV crew to mess up what you've got goin on because what you have is magic brother! Keep on rockin' Hank, and your loyal followers will always be here.
......pecos hank......you have an extremely great talent for finding, capturing on video, and enhancing these storms via the human senses.......please continue your efforts in this field.....hats off to you.......absolutely outstanding video / audio....

+Pecos Hank WOW that was the best tornados i have Ever seen and the music rocks
+Pecos Hank you are the best youtuber yet thanks for making videos of tornadoes and storms
What in hell makes you want to do this stuff? Thank you, crazy person.
IdiotsBeware1 Simply just seeing the power of nature
I'm always so excited to see a new video from you...huge fan here. Your footage of the Pilger Twins is something I watch over and over, especially the rope dancing around the wedge. I saw that you don't take anyone chasing with you but if I ever develop powers of invisibility, I know who I'd sneak a ride with ;) We have a tornado or funnel cloud sighted in my county every 3-4 years, so far no luck seeing one, maybe one of these days.
That's awesome Anna. In this video I wanted to show you guys the long cuts time lapsed. If you ever develop those secret powers, you're welcome to join. 'Til then, keep watching the sky. BTW, what country do you live in?
Pecos hank i love the cedar co tornado and the dark part
You are the best storm chaser channel on RUclips hands down. I've tried to bear with others but none can compare to the professionalism that you put into creating these masterpieces. Everything you touch turns into gold doesn't it?
I think that the really thin tornados are just erie
Yep
Yeah me too
Pecos Hank, you're an awesome guy with an awesome channel. Thanks for doing what you do and providing us netizens from all over the globe a close up look of tornadoes' terrifying beauty!
freakin amazing production value. You are an asset to us all.
Pecos Hank , your face at 10:16 is the face of a man that is just *done* with this.
It was never ending... 3 adrenaline days without hardly any sleep... I was done. ;)
Pecos Hank you should post instructional videos, on how to identify different things like updrafts, inflow and all that in diff situations. I would appreciate it, the skyward class I participated in wasn't the greatest.
thesideboobgodfather I'll see what i can do. Thanks.
Came back after a LOT of rain during football classes, the music and beautiful tornadoes makes my day even more surreal. Thanks, Hank.
truly one of your best produced videos...the music was PERFECT!!!!awesome job Hank..you da man..
Hey, Hank! I remember the mother's day tornado as I was in Beaver Crossing as it pulled up while visiting some relatives of mine. My dad was a trained spotter and got me, my mom, and my brother out of there and sheltered before it hit. He was part of the search and rescue. I lived 11 miles northwest-ish from Beaver Crossing and it was pouring there, it was windy, and the sky was the same shade of green. We were lucky not to get hit badly. A few says later I joined the cleanup and the damage made me cry a bit. I'm glad everyone in my family made it out okay, as well as the others in the town. Happy chasing!
Hank, honestly, if you haven't already, you need to sort out your hi-def still photos and get them published into a weather book. You certainly have a knack for framing beautiful weather phenomenon photos. My favorite in this video is the orange mammatus clouds with the corn stocks in the foreground. Stay safe out there, and keep up the good work!
currently working my way through your backlog of footage Hank and i just want to say thank you. Years of jaw dropping footage, wish i'd stumbled upon it earlier. You are a bloody legend
You are easily my favorite channel on RUclips. Keep up the good work, man!
you just made me get 10x more afraid of tornados after you pointed out they move like a living creatures
Oh yea how about when a tornado seems like it isnt moving it is heading RIGHT torwards you

You have got to have the best intro to these videos ever. That "Then there is 2014" then the kickass guitar with all the crazy storms, so cool.

GOD that blue is so scary but SO beautiful.... I would LOVE to ride with you one day! Keep up the excellent work, my friend, and never go faster than your guardian can fly! And that sky at 3:26 - OMG.....

Your channel is great! I've gotta be honest it's kinda making me more and more interested in storm chasing the more I watch it. Its informative, its amusing, and its addictive. Keep up the work Hank!
Oh no, I've officially watched all the year tornado videos and I am sad there are no more 😩. Infact this is the second time I've watched them all. I just can't get enough of them. Hank, I know it's been many years since 2010, but can you go through your files and make a video for that year? I am also eagerly awaiting 2020s video. Excellent work.
Cheers from Canada.

Got to be the best tornado compilation I have seen, ever. Great work and great footage. That lightning... Wow!
I still remember watching those twin tornadoes up in Pilger, NE on the national news. Still gives me chills especially cause even though we were only about 80 miles away the weather was peaceful and calm. Hard to believe something so insane was happening so close
Hank has made me know so much about tornadoes that my whole class was jealous when I put together a full slideshow of tornadoes and photos from hank. BTW I want to storm chase with u plz! :D
Man i love your work! Everything about it. Your videography your commentary and your music makes your chasing video's the best out there period.
This video was just...jaw-dropping. You get some seriously amazing pics and footage, and write beautiful narration to go along with it. I think the cloud-to-cloud lightning was one of the most stunningly beautiful things I've ever seen in my entire life.

I appreciate the hell outa that Matthew. I make enough dough off my music to disappear 3 months out of the year. Hopefully this year will be as photogenic and non-deadly as 2014.
Good film. What is the guitar music 9 or 10 minutes in?

The song at the start sounds like walking dead XD RIGHT?!
was the may 11 storm cyclic?
Amazing, as always. Love your channel!!!! Nice mammatus clouds at the end.
1:39 I love the music you use. Creepy and cool.
4:22 The Southern Backtones are great, love you guys so much.
Insane shots, great documentary. Curious if you see more snakes on the roads before these storms hit?
Thanks Smetlogik. In my experiences, there doesn't seem to be a correlation between these storms and diurnal snake activity. The usual suspects, bull snakes, coachwhip's and sometimes garters seem to a prefer a little cloudy shade on hot days though. I just started a new secret channel on snakes... follow along if you wanna learn more. ruclips.net/channel/UChr1HgRCfcbW4njeZhZzHfQ

Hi Hank. I live in Australia. Have been captivated by Tornados all my life. We sometimes get them in Australia, tho not like you guys. Love your videos. Good job on helping all those little animals, lizards, turtles etc. Tornadoes are so awe inspiring, beautiful and so devestating! Prayers to all that have been affected.
