Deftones My Own Summer The Decomposer Lounge Reaction and Chill
That "Boom Bap" from the rack tom to the snare is just the cheekiest, slickest opening to an album ever. Absolutely iconic.
Perfect example of "Less is More"
Godlike, that snare sound has become a part of my DNA
In an interview, I think he said he "borrowed" it from Easy Lover from Phil Collins
Agreed.
Thats the cue, no matter the age, time period, set 'intensity'....
Time to head to the pit 🤷♂️
can we get a little love for Abe? the most under rated drummer in rock music imo. he fucking kills it in this track.
Abe kills it everytime
He knows the assignment every album
One of my favorite drummers. Love the way he plays. What Happened to You from Koi No Yokan is one of my favs, just because of how difficult it is to follow at first.
Yes!
Creative, solid, every singlr groove/beat he plays is recognizable and great.
Of all the bands from that era, I've never felt any disconnect from Deftones. They remain one of my favorite bands. They have aged like a fine wine.
Seeing them live is a whole new dimension. I’ve always loved them before I saw them live, but they just rocked the house that night. I went home and learned this, Be Quiet and Drive, and Passenger
As an occasional Deftones listener, they have really great evolution from album to album. Also I've seen people complain about their nu-metal era but even that stuff aged amazingly; so many great songs on Around The Fur, Dai the Flu is probably a personal favourite
I'll admit that I was always a White Pony and after Deftones' fan. Recently (finally) I got into Adrenaline. The funny thing is that I really like Glassjaw. Little did I know that early Glassjaw is kind of a semi-ripoff job on older Deftones, since 1995 vs 2000
@@michaeljamrozy4299 My first concert (aged 12) was glassjaw opening for deftones during the White Pony tour!
Same.
Might as well do the full album review on "Around the Fur"....incredible album....but if you are doing it song by song..."Be quiet and Drive" next please!!!
this! around the fur is a sick album.
I always go back and forth with myself on my favorite deftones album. is it white pony or around the fur?.... I usually settle on white pony before remembering how great koi no yokan is.
@@JungleScene Around the Fur and Koi are both better than white pony
All Deftones is 🔥! Adrenaline though.... 🔥 🔥!
@@nobo3498 I would agree
@@nobo3498 I got Around the Fur, White Pony, Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan as CDs, to me those are Deftones' best albums!
The drums on this define a sound we can't.
Don’t forget the bass.
Still getting goosebumps from this song after 24 years.
How's the last 3 years been
That riff is so captain crunch.
I used to have a multi-effect guitar signal processor that had a patch called Captain Crunch. It was so heavy. 😁
@@mogsy2112 so cool!
it's captain crunch deluxx eye thInk. extra pecans.
I’ve been drumming for 25 years now and Abe Cunningham’s drum sound on deftones records has always been a huge influence on my sound. I think he was just using a bell brass snare with a two ply coated head with little to no muffling. Also, the “wide” sound on the attack of the hihat is something I always describe as a woody “thunk.”
Yes, a bell brass piccolo in the studio I believe but could be mistaken. I wonder if it was a free-floating shell system. When I bought my Pearl Masters, the free-floating brass snare was my absolute favorite. I got the Dennis Chambers signature and Chad Smith nickel as well but they both took a back seat. Been drumming for 25 years myself. Abe has always had a clear, dynamic sound. It's one of the reasons why I'm a big fan of the band.
@@chadeverhart6500 Was it a piccolo??? I would have thought it was just a cranked 6.5 depth or something.
He was using 5 or 5.5 OCDP vented maple snares on this album, I also heard he used some Brady snares. From what I understand he didn't switch to tama brass snares until white pony/self titled
@@stavros3438 Ahhh, ok. Thanks for the correction there.
@@caseyrogers573 I think I may have been mistaken on that. Apparently, he didn't start using brass until White Pony
Every Deftones video you breakdown, you always point out the atmospheric/ambient sounds and we keep telling you- its their 5th member (and secret weapon) Frank Delgado. This was the first album he was an official member of the band and he was more of a sampler, using vinyls to create the soundscapes underneath all the craziness. He, to me, is what really helped develop and push the sound of the band in order to stick out from the pack. As they progressed through albums, he started to incorporate keyboards and more unique textures. All the weird effects that is on every album is from him.
Would love for you to decompose a song from their newest album- Ohms. They have progressed so much from this sound and would love to hear what you have to say.
and another aspect about deftones that makes them stand out is Abe's drumming. His groove is what stands out to me in every album. The songs are almost danceable at times because of the way he chooses to not do a standard "rock" beat, but more of a hip-hop beat.
Frank's flavour is the tasty sauce that binds all the other awesome ingredients together to me and this is more than truest in their later release Ohms, the synths were all around stellar imo.
@@concertino58 Yeah man, absolutely. I think more dancing needs to be encouraged in the metal scene tbh. Bands like Deftones and Meshuggah don't make me wanna start a pit, they just make me wanna bounce and pull some shapes in my own little space haha. I also really think the drums in this tune have a very Dub feel to them, particularly in the engineering during the breakdown. Lots of atmosphere, reverb and delays. Lee Scratch Perry would be proud.
@@JD_13 I definitely understand! I was just listening to Ohms right now and thinking about much they've grown. They still have elements that made me fall in love with them (Stef's dissonant, dark riffs like at the intro of "Error", Chino's scream and unique melodies, Abe's breakbeat style, etc) but they have evolved into a more prog, shoegaze band! I've been a fan of theirs since I was 10 back in 1998, so they have been the soundtrack to my life.
I know someday you'll get to Deftones "rosemary"
Or romantic dreams 😭👏🏽
Radiant city please
I pray for it

Deftones - Cherry Waves
Even if it's not filmed. It's actually extremely beautiful. Nothing like this.
The fact that such a tortured album could give birth to such an achingly beautiful song tells you all that you need to know about Deftones.
Cherry Waves is my favorite Deftones song
Another Deftones reaction, another opportunity for me to recommend their song Rosemary.
Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every time I watch Geebz react to Tool or Deftones it just makes me wish he was in a band like that. He just GETS it and I can only imagine what he could contribute to the song writing process for a band like that.
Deftones have so many awesome gems like Be Quiet And Drive, 7 Words, MX, Minerva, Needles And Pins, Deathblow, Kimdracula, Combat, Lifter, Rosemary, You've Seen The Butcher, Diamond Eyes, Royal, Graphic Nature, Tempest, Hearts/Wires, Phantom Bride...
976-EVIL is a legendary track IMO
MINERVA!!!!!!!!
You should do 'Cherry Waves' from their album 'Saturday Night Wrist'. It's a more experimental album and that song is my personal highlight from all the songs!
I agree, That song is in damn near every playlist I’ve made. That and Team Sleep - Ever (foreign flag)
Underrated album.
Chi Cheng (R.I.P.) delivering those amazing screams on the chorus. God bless.
Excellent choice Geebz ! 🤘
The screams in this song give me "chicken skin" every time. His screams in "Around the Fur" are crazy 🤯
The whole album is a masterpiece!👌
Though those few notes of “change in the house of flies” at the end were equally delicious 🤤.
Geebz.......basically you NEED to do every Deftones track ....album by album 😎👍
Totally agree! Love a good Chino scream.
You oughta do "Ceremony" off their latest album Ohms. Its got all the iconic elements of their sound but with a lot of really interesting musical choices, progression, and changes throughout the song.
One of my favorites from Ohms
The song that made me fall in love with Deftones.
When you said you were going to cycle back this week , you didn’t even hint at Deftones ☝️😎.
More Deftones please......don’t forget Rosemary 🙏 or their acoustic stuff “live in Hawaii 👌🤘
Awesome as always Geebz
I remember that Hawaii show being pretty awful unfortunately
Whole "B-Sides and Rarities" album is a gem
@@Atom-E.B.E.
Yeh the video and sound quality are not perfect but still worth a watch
@@Imiss80sn90s
Ahhhh YES..........brilliant, the look on Robert Smith’s face listening to Deftones cover ‘if only tonight we could sleep’ . 👌😎
@@1949bug or how clean "be quiet and drive" is, better yet, simple man, utter perfection of a cover
I was literally JUST watching your other deftones vids when you posted this one 😭 I love seeing your new vids right as they come out :)))
This song brings back so many memories, when did I get so old....
when you stopped listening to this every fifteen minutes? get the whole album -including the supreme hidden track- on loop for a weekend.
This, so hard. Woke up and I'm suddenly a year off 40. Shocking.
Right? Was like 16 in ‘97 listening to this.
love the snare production.
this track has some of my favorite drum sounds on it, when I was a kid in a band in the 90s we'd use it as reference when we went to a studio and just said "we want the drums to sound like this".
So glad you decided to check this song out. The guitar riff on this song is one the grooviest and most enjoyable ones ever!
Agreed
Regarding the Hi-Hat mic: There was none. Terry Date was the producer on this record, and, in Abe's words: "Terry is a complete minimalist - an Sm57 on the snare, one mic on the kick, a couple of overheads and that’s it."
Really incredible how he manages to get such a great and nicely defined drum sound with such a minimal setup.
i recall watching a rick beato video where he explains that was the most common technique for micing drums 50 years ago.
@@michaelmarhal Rick is awesome.
You really need to check out the band Hum. Their album "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" was a huge influence on Deftones.
Was thinking the same. In fact, I think I made that recommendation on another Deftones reaction of his.
I guess that's feasible, You'd Prefer came out in 95, Around the Fur in 97, but i feel like Deftones were organically approaching this sound in Adrenaline.
I found the other Hum fans! We need to make a little more noise, here. I've suggested them several times. Sad news about the passing of Bryan St. Pere, last week.
@@MisterBrimm Knife Prty got its riff from Little Dipper. They got the WP guitar tone from Stars. The album cover's more than an homage.
'Feasible' doesn't quite do it justice.
Yes Hum influenced so many bands. I’d love to see you react to them.
This is one of my wife's/ and my favorite songs by them. This whole album is so good, it was something different when it came out and it was different than everyone else. And that made them super special for some of us.
The song that started it all for me. Love these guys. Still putting out quality decades later.
Man, you want some good Chino screams you gotta listen to 7 Words.
YEEESSSS.
Screams or not really, he should give it a listen, it's so GOOD. And not like any other track of theirs he reviewed so far
It's a shitty song though
@@Mansplainer452 _confused, disgusted stare_
@@AliceC993 😂😂 cmon dude the song has no melody at all. I'm reluctant to use the word song here
I remember seeing the premier of this video on 120 minutes on MTV. My brother and I loved their first album and this song was so amazing. I really felt like they were going to be like my Zeppelin or Beatles and they have been that and more for me over the years.
Great video Geebz! Anytime it’s Tool or Deftones I know you have a great one coming. I get excited to hear songs I’ve heard 1000 times and enjoy them in a new way when I watch your reactions. You are such a great hang my man
If you're looking for another pre-White Pony Deftones song, I highly recommend "Mascara"
Sepultura ❤
Pantera ❤
Love the Deftones song and all your Decompositions ❤
Love seeing Deftones here again! Has anyone recommended Failure to you yet? I would love to hear your input on "the nurse who loved me"
More recent failure stuff is amazing too. Great productions
definitely want stuck on you or saturday saviour
I'm down for any single failure song, but there's no denying how special of an album fantastic planet is. For an introduction I think any song from that is a good choice
Can remember the first time I heard this song. Fell in love from the first second. Love deftones
Hello again from Australia Geebz, hope you’re doing well mate. Just a friendly reminder you should check out Radiohead - Street Spirit. I know you may have seen my comments on other videos, but as I was saying, just a friendly reminder 😆 Love your work mate ♥️
Great pick mate!
Still remember the first time i heard this in the early 2000s, totally blew me away
And I´m 15 years old again! Awesome!
One of my favourites by them, played this as a cover when i was in a band covering nu metal tracks at venues, went down well. I was lead guitarist. Timeless track.
Was the summer of ‘97. I was strictly into rap and hip hop. My girlfriends brother said “Have you heard of Deftones?” and played this song. Changed my life.
Caught em in New Jersey back in 96 , opening for Pantera.
Fantastic show , what I can remember of it anyway. Just a solid band all the way around.
Awwwright!!🤙
Man I love this song 😎🤙
RIP Chi Cheng
I was working as a security guard in an office block on the weekend night shift, and my shift supervisor had setup the security offices' radio in front of the mic of the building's PA system while I was out on floor patrol, so I had Xfm (before the takeover by the Capital Radio Group in the UK) blasting throughout the building where ever I went.
Then this track came on the air.
It was, and still is in my opinion, one the sleaziest, filthiest guitar riffs I have ever had the pleasure to listen to.
Also, that kick/snare intro at 1:05 gets everyone.
love the bass line in this song... and how it drops out and comes back in.
Chi was a beast, but also knew exactly when to hold back. RIP
Deftones Forever 🤟
This song is what made me a fan!🖤
I love that this song is about going outside after about 3 weeks in the studio and the sun seeming incredibly intense.
Quite possibly the best (or at least most infectious) drum beat of all time.
Great analysis 🤘 One of the first riffs I learned 20 odd years ago! 👵
Great warm up riff, so fun to play
It's the reason why I learned the guitar
love love love love love deftones…around the fur is my fav from this album…
A couple of details i get is that you can hear the pic on the strings and you can hear the rest of the strings in the chords even with the distortion in the big riffs! Their drums are always crazy! Next you should try « Drive »! that song was my first introduction to them! Quite a tune too! Aaawright!
Excellent reaction, love me some Deftones! 🤘
Looking forward to a possible lyrical breakdown this week!
Hoping for more Architects and Protest the Hero reactions in the future 🤞
I like the little hand gesture you used while describing Chino’s voice...it is reminiscent of a monster squid, simultaneously fluidly beautiful and terrifying.
Woohoo!! Another excellent choice, Geebz. For your next Deftones visit, I suggest "Around the Fur" from this same album. Mahalo!
Another all time classic riff
Favorite bouncy, crunch, emotional audio experiences; KoRn and Deftones!!!
Great song, great video. Can't wait for the next Opeth one you've been teasing.
pls Rosemary next!!
Change (In the House of Flies). It started just as you hit the stop button. That song. That song is haunting.
Abe Cunningham's snare is a 14"x5" (or maybe 14"x7" can't remember) brass snare with a marching snare head. That's what gives that super tight almost piccolo snare sound. But if you listen closely, it actually has a very fat low and mid that piccolos don't have. His snare was a custom job too because he needed it extra thick to be able to handle the torque the marching head requires. Very cool stuff.
I try to look up, to the sky, but my eyes burn CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 Geebz
Please do Death "Scavenger of human sorrow"
To my mind this album helped define the modern metal scale that was used in heaps of records that came after it. Minor second, major third, minor sixth and major seventh. Pretty weird but it works. Lots of modern metalcore and heavy hardcore uses the minor second and major third as well
Thank you Geebz :)
This song is sooooo fun to play on guitar. Rocks so hard but, fairly easy to play. I LOVE THIS SONG
Thank you for making Tuesday Great while I weather the storm passing through Tampa Bay tonight!
This is Absolutely one of the BEST Riffs and Tunes EVER!
You completely nailed it again!!!
I love it when you go all Rain Man with the counts and you count with your fingers off your mustache. Total goobering to the music!
Great song and even greater album
I am so thrilled that you mention the drums as well. Abe Cunningham is SO tight when playing and the sound of the snare is a signatur sound. So cool!
My favourite Deftones song! This song always makes me feel motivated to do whatever it is I do after listening to it.
Check out Chino's guest vocal on the song Reprogrammed to Hate by Whitechapel. The band's singer sits in a low death metal growl, but when Chino comes in he belts out this terrifying banshee screaming verse.
It was at this moment I knew the Deftones were going to blow up
Love you guys! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@RobbieDigglers3rdEye 🤘
RIP Chi Cheng! What a absolute beast of a bass sound.
Best band ever
man i would love to see you do be quiet and drive by deftones, one of the most emotional rock songs ever made
Minerva is my favorite acoustic or original still kills
Morning bro, thanks for the post.. great reaction video
One of the few songs that can be listened to over and over again. From that era.
I think you'd enjoy Veil of Maya - Mikasa. Amazing composing and studio work!
the snare ghost notes are nice too.
My favorite Deftones song, one of their best albums, in my opinion of course.
Definitely revisit Deftones again. Do the trifecta from their album Koi No Yokan: Rosemary, Goon Squad, What Happened to You.
Awwwright 🤘
One of the first Drop D riffs that I ever learned to play.
Yeah, I learned it by ear
One of my all-time fav bands. so different but not subgenre. just killer unique musical ideas and follow thru's. really amazing ingenuity, writing, composition, etc.... Thanks for your great insights. It's really great to see someone being introduced to some of their great work for the first time. Love all your videos. Grateful to ya as always! Keep it up!
I was going to ask for this last week during the heat wave here in Seattle. The song was written in a Seattle heat wave. Would say "good times" but it sucked.
This channel really helped me through end of 2020 and continues throughout 2021 to bring me joy every week!! Because of you Geebz I am truly blessed!! 👍🤟🏝
One of my favourite songs from Deftones- check out the rest of the album!! Thanks for doing it! Try Ohms from their latest album- i believe one of their best song- the riff is haunting🤙🏻
No one can make power cords sound as good as stephtones
The basslines are always so good with this band. They really complement the rest of the instruments.
