One of the things Ive really started to notice after 20 years of listening to this album is the keys. You can listen to White Pony over and over and not even really notice the keyboard, but when you actively start trying to pick it out you realize how much depth and thickness it adds to the overall mix, like in the “soon this will be all over…” section in this song.

Oh my Gahhhhhhd, you done did Feiticeira... Sweet Thriller Killer! There's something always abstract and euphoric about Deftones music, especially White Pony and this track is top bang! You're in from the first second. Perfect introduction to such a masterwork of an album. One of my first true musical loves! x
Fucking fantastic song. One of the best opening tracks to any album, ever. Perhaps it’s worth listening to a band that had a strong influence on the ethereal direction Deftones went on this album and later. That’s right, I mean HUM. Please check out “Afternoon With the Axolotls” or “Isle of the Cheetah” for some ethereal engineering excellence. Especially on “Afternoon With the Axolotls” it sounds at first like you’re in a living room with the band, and then when the power comes in you get teleported into the high desert under a starry, moonless sky. Yeah, it really is like that!
HUM is awesome! I love the contrast of heavy distorted guitar riffs, and ethereal soundscapes. One of the most underrated band of the '90's. RIP Bryan 💚
Dude, the depth and dynamics of Axolotols is astonishing. My favorite song by them (saying a LOT), and absolute perfection from a production/engineering perspective. It's one of the songs I constantly practice drums to, and even though it's not particularly difficult or demanding, hitting the 32nds at the end into the coda is immensely satisfying.
I can remember hearing this track for the first time. My brother picked me up from middle school and he just came back from Tower Records (Bought the limited edition version). You could just feel the shift in the air when the music came out of those speakers. The dissonance of the guitar, the syncopated drumming, the dark/eerie vibe that was totally different from their album before, the lyrics- everything about this opening track was them showing the world they were more than their comrades in the nu-metal scene (even tho they were always more alternative/post-hardcore). This song, along with “Everything in its Right Place” by Radiohead, are some of the best examples of how a band could just change the perception people had of them within seconds.
That “4th” or dissonant push and pull effect you describe is on the money! I call it “stephtones”, because it’s the songs that the guitarist steph writes that most often have it. The songs chino writes on guitar are more often within the “four walls” of the scale / mode. Also the engineering is this consistent throughout all of white pony, and yes terry date and Deftones = masterful, and yes signature high/piccolo or tightly tuned maple snares, etc, so you made a lot of pin point observations, nicely done! I subscribed
The vocal melody feels almost like he switches the majors and minors in a very uncommon way. It almost sounds psychotic with the juxtaposition of the music. Such a sick track.
Underrated and understated guitar work. Carpenter takes you by the hand and leads you on a stroll through waves of euphoria, the drums causing you to stumble into dissonance here and there, suddenly the guitar picks you up, dusts you off, comforts you and leads you once again. It's a truly stunning track.

Can’t beat Terry Date. He’s been a vital tool for Deftones for many many years, he really is like an extended member of the band. Glad you are so keen on a great producer.
This is the opening track to 2000's White Pony. The record company then added another song to be track 1 on album rereleases but this is the original opener. 22 year old song off the same album as Change, Digital Bath, Passenger, etc.
I love the reaction... he tells what he's feeling. I'm pretty sure that's what the song is about. The feeling that you get when you hear it. Whole point. Good Job my guy

Thanks Geebz 🙏 White pony is a polished masterpiece start to finish. I read somewhere that one of the drum mics was placed inside a fish bowl for effect on ‘Digital Bath’ 🧐 You did ‘Passenger’ with Maynard/Chino on vocals I believe last time. Please please do more white pony. Thanks again 👌
You said this isn't an "engineering clinic"... uhh... I don't know about that. That might not be what you think of it as, or want it to be, or intend it to be... but I think that is a large part of what I get from watching your videos. You are charming. I would watch you anyway, pretty sure... but I tend to watch videos where I am learning something. I used to sing, so I watch several singing coaches who do reaction/analysis videos. It lets me re-learn things I've forgotten and continue on by learning new things I'd never even known. I love complex rhythmic and harmonic variations, so I watch some music theory people to learn "why" I like what I like. I know that a lot of the techniques exist, but comparing my natural reaction to the music with an explanation for how those techniques were used is a marvelous educational experience. From you, I get a dose of the awesome that you offer... your personal energy, enthusiasm... all of that, but I also get more of a focus/education on the mixing and engineering side of things. I don't really get that many other places. I value it. Didn't think I would comment... not my favorite Deftones song. I like the aching dissonance in places, and the drummer is doing interesting stuff, but except for one or two bars over halfway through it's pretty straight with the timing, and I would describe it as clean and uncomplicated harmonically... not bad... in no way am I dissing Deftones, or even this song. It is an excellent example of what it is, that just isn't my favorite fruit from the tree, if you'll excuse the bizarre metaphor. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on my play list, but I wouldn't seek it out and listen to it specifically. Yes? It's still Deftones, it's still good. Anyway, thank you, as always, for doing what you do. I enjoy it and I appreciate all that you bring to your channel. :)
This is my favorite band, I have others but deftones tops them by far. What I love about your videos is that, first of all you remind me of my favorite teacher in high school who directed our show choir and our chorus and was a composer himself and I think it’s because you can tell when a composer is really listening to the music by the way they make their faces and move their heads to it which I find amusing and awesome at the same time. Lol but he wouldn’t be into metal being that he was very much a 70s funk kind of man. I also really love these videos because it’s so easy for people to love the sound and invest in the story being told by the singers but I feel like it takes someone who really knows how music works to really appreciate every instrument, every note, and every sound and watching these and breaking down each sound makes me appreciate the music this band makes even more than I already did and I’m loving it 😂
Just saw Deftones with Gojira and they were both incredible and Chino still hits it all just right. Even though Chi isn't there it was an experience as always!!! Please do more, and yes white pony won grammys.....but we really don't care....lol.
This is some peak Deftones for me. I love Chino's dynamic vocal delivery on it and the odd melody. Fugazi would definitely approve of that riff, groove, and dynamics. It's like if Fugazi had a record produced by Butch Vig.
Black Taffy. I love it. The drum sound, off-key lyrics and guitar wash made me fall in love with this album. Because it's a non-single opening track, it often gets over looked. Well spotted as always Geebz.
Geebz! Been a while since your last Deftones reaction. Might I suggest Cherry Waves off Saturday Night Wrist? A lot of cool stuff going on in that song. Love your work, sir!
Back at it! Deftones! Love the White Pony album. One of my favorites. I also really enjoyed your drum video on Patreon. Very cool. Speaking of drums, Infant Annihilator "Cuntcrusher" will be super fun to listen to. You have to watch the drum cam video and then the album version with vocals as well. If you listen to both you get two very different experiences. Not sure if it can influence anything you're doing but you never know. Also their track Blasphemian is just another level of awesomeness.

(back to school/mini maggit and pink maggit) but the main release started with this track, if I'm not mistaken...(i could be mis- remembering) it's better with this track kicking off the album. Just slams you in the face.
@@dongonzulman6478 You can find The Boy’s Republic on their RUclips channel. The Limited Edition original release (the ones with the solid red or black cases) started with Feiticeira and ended with The Boy’s Republic.
It was actually the limited edition release that started with Feiticeira and ended with The Boy’s Republic, and it did not include back to school/mini maggit. That’s the one I had until someone broke into my car and stole it like 10 years ago.
Drumming wise...nothing better! The production on the beats is unreal, and that goes for the whole album. Abe Cunningham used a different snare for each track, and the time spent on engineering the drum sound has never been neared in any rock album, ever. To the point that it is, arguably the most prominent part of the mix, outside of the vocals....it's pretty much metal with a hip hop base.
@@TeanTobaccoChannel couldn't agree more. He is probably the drummer that has informed and inspired my style of drumming more than any other, with his groove, power, and the fact he plays metal with a single bass pedal. While everyone else is speeding up, this dude is pulling it back. Love it!
Totally agree. Abe is one of the tightest drummers out there. Everyone likes to talk about Danny Carey, Pert, Hakke, and Halpern like they're the pinnacle of drumming, but Abe is so creative and consistent that he truly deserves to be in that group of greats. As a lifelong gigging musician myself, I find that my favorite bands changes through the years as i grow in my craft, but I've been a diehard Deftones fan since 1999. If there was ever one band that influenced my playing/writing more than any other, it's been Deftones. Even though I may have liked some albums more than others, they've never disappointed me. The boys from Sac Town will forever be in my top three favorite bands.
So like a few others in comments today …I witnessed Deftones live last night … my fourth time since the album White Pony was released … first time seeing them headline … it was loud and the crowd was rockous … took a few songs to find the groove ..but when It clicked … it clicked and Chino managed to roar and scream with out losing his cords … a thing to behold! I love the production on White Pony, love the production on Ohms …and it’s rewarding when a band can bring a live performance to back up what studio magic did for the albums!! There is a Deftones sound …and it has legs …yet is under appreciated …like all things good and great! George Carlin F-bomb approved …right place and time to use it …I’m sure the sisters at his church would approve!!
just a funny fact is the title of this song is a reference to a female character (Joana Prado). she was a tv dancer and nowadays she married to Vitor Belford (aka a UFC fighter). this character is an honor to I dream of Jeannie.
Another band to check out, not heavy like deftones but still big on sound, is Silversun Pickups. They have some killer songs with some nice engineering moves. Try Future Foe Scenarios and Well Thought Out Twinkles
It's hard to describe just how unique this sound was back in 2000. I suppose the fact that the Deftones sound(s) remain unreplicated to this day helps. This was the Terry Date/deftones collaboration at its peak. A lot of people considered it "overprocessed" at the time, and as a direct follow up to the rawness of their previous album Around the Fur I can see where they were coming from. But this was really the coming out party for Deftones' fifth member, Frank Delgado aka DJ Frank Nit. He was not the typical rock dj of the time. There was no record scratching, no overt samples, even very little drum production. His focus was always atmosphere. I do believe his contribution is the dissonance Geebs is picking up on towards the end of the song. Deftones were already a pretty dark band, but Frank really took it to another level by bringing a sort of horror movie aesthetic to the overall sound.
One of the reasons I love this track is because it doesn't have a chorus...........I've only herd a few tracks like this and that makes this song so much better.
I've been drumming for over 20 years and I gotta say, the drum sound on this album is the best I've ever heard, it's absolutely flawless perfection Any time I've been in the studio recording drums and the producer/engineer asks what I want my drums to sound like in the mix, my answer is ALWAYS "I want to sound like Abe Cunningham on White Pony". That snare man, that fucking snare, it's just so damn crisp and razor sharp
Yeah, that snare! It fucking cracks, and cuts through everything! My other favorite snare sounds come from Neil Peart, Chad Sexton, and Stewart Copeland.
Excellent choice. But Please do Hum. I guarantee you’ll be blown away by any track off Downward is Heavenward. Imagine Smashing Pumpkins crossed with My Bloody Valentine. Do it! (Pretty please) ;)
Hi Geebz! Thanks for the like! Just FYI, the title is a Portuguese word (means witch/enchantress), and they wouldn’t roll the “r”; I think it was related to or inspired by a Brazilian TV show.
Chinos vocals are unbelievable in all his performances. I saw Deftones live in London years ago in a tiny venue and will always remember how the place exploded with excitement. Move over to chinos other projects. Crosses are amazing and equally Team sleep. Definitely give them a try soon. Only subed a week or so ago but lovin this channel!
This happens to be the first Deftones song I ever heard. Also my personal favourite purely for the feelings I get from 1:50 and 4:22-5:20 Also I'm not gonna stop requesting Geebz, PLEASE react to Wilderun - O Resolution!
I think the haunting harmonizing you mentioned is the guitar playing a 9th. If you play a drop D powerchord and add the two: Boom, instant Deftones :-)
This song is the perfect illustration of a killer tune, on a classic album, getting overlooked for more commercially viable songs. Best song on White Pony, and that’s saying something.. That album is great from start to finish! 👊🏼👊🏼
Without a doubt Chino's finest vocal melody in Deftones entire catalog. Chef's kiss.

If you're thinking of doing more Deftones soon pleaseee cover Diamond Eyes or Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
I love Abe’s drumming. He’s all groove but totally does it his own way. A little more unconventional.
Sick a kick ass album! Also the best snare sound ever recorded imo!
Yes. More more. Deftones are a different breed
Thank you Geebz
Deftones rules!! Aloha from Brasil!!
A killer song with a very sinister vibe to it that pulls you in. A great reaction vid Geebz 👍
Some of my favorite production on a metal song ever!!! Definitely a top track on White Pony
Not really a metal song
@@guitaristssuck8979 hate to break it to you but they're Alternative Metal
@@guitaristssuck8979 what do you even mean man
Geebz. I’d love to see you do some more mudvanye, maybe cultivate??? Awesome video boss man I’ve been falling love with this channel
One of my favorite songs from my all time favorite band!
Now please do "New Day" by Karnivool
just a funny fact is the title of this song is a reference to a female character (Joana Prado). she was a tv dancer and nowadays she married to Vitor Belford (aka a UFC fighter). this character is an honor to I dream of Jeannie.
Probably one of the best snare drum sounds ever!
Another band to check out, not heavy like deftones but still big on sound, is Silversun Pickups. They have some killer songs with some nice engineering moves. Try Future Foe Scenarios and Well Thought Out Twinkles
Nice suggestion. Another very underrated band. Panic Switch could easily be on a play list with Deftones, amongst others.
Loved it when they started their shows with this song. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them, not sure what their doing now.
Hey I just saw these guys live last night. Hell of a show.
Frank Delgado is the DJ for Deftones he's responsible for the "atmosphere" of most of their songs
this song and hexagram are my tops, just beautiful songs!
This is my favorite album by them, Nick Diaz used to walk out to this song in the UFC
Terry Date was the engineer/producer on this. Everything he touches is fire.
This puts a smile on my face.
So, new Korn, Deftones and now GWAR. Been a good week.

Fantastic reaction! If you like this, you might also enjoy their songs Mein/Ratpure/Bloody cape or Korea
I've been drumming for over 20 years and I gotta say, the drum sound on this album is the best I've ever heard, it's absolutely flawless perfection
Any time I've been in the studio recording drums and the producer/engineer asks what I want my drums to sound like in the mix, my answer is ALWAYS "I want to sound like Abe Cunningham on White Pony".
That snare man, that fucking snare, it's just so damn crisp and razor sharp
The drums are almost the only clean sound. In a way it balances out all the distortion and drives the song.
Yeah, that snare! It fucking cracks, and cuts through everything!
My other favorite snare sounds come from Neil Peart, Chad Sexton, and Stewart Copeland.
My favorite deftones song
Excellent choice. But Please do Hum. I guarantee you’ll be blown away by any track off Downward is Heavenward. Imagine Smashing Pumpkins crossed with My Bloody Valentine. Do it! (Pretty please) ;)
Yes yes yes, Hum! “Afternoon With the Axolotls” or “Isle of the Cheetah” are crying out for a de-composition!!!
I see that I've found the few other HUM fans!
@@hortonwho211 1000%. I want to see his face light up as he realizes how much is actually going on..
My favorite band again. ❤
Deftones:
Teething
Lovers
Anything from: Around the fur
Yeaaaaah
would love you to hear Thom Yorke/Jonny Greenwoods new band The Smile. Free in the knowledge is a great track.
Virgins unite
@@billy2896 what?
Hi Geebz! Thanks for the like! Just FYI, the title is a Portuguese word (means witch/enchantress), and they wouldn’t roll the “r”; I think it was related to or inspired by a Brazilian TV show.
I think for the engineering side of Deftones albums the best one you can check out is Diamond Eyes, something like Risk, Prince or 976-EVIL
Also my personal favourite purely for the feelings I get from 1:50 and 4:22-5:20
Also I'm not gonna stop requesting Geebz, PLEASE react to Wilderun - O Resolution!
I’m also a big fan of the side project Palms. Same but a bit mellower sonic experience
back in the dayz! excellent choice!
Hey Geebz, love the vid! Just wanna let you know that it’s “Feiticeira” not “Feiticeria.” All good! Keep on keeping on!
I forget but have you done "Passenger" by Deftones? Maynard is guest vocal
"Feiticeira" means sorceress in portuguese. It was quite curious reading the name for the first time, because portuguese is my mother tongue.
One of my all time favourite songs :)
Great song, and great video.
"What a kickass engineering job..."
Terry Date will do that to ya.
Still here! Will you finally do "Ava Adore" by Smashing Pumpkins, or at least some more Nine Inch Nails?
Much love!
