My biggest annoyance reading a book on a Kindle is that when you start a new book, and you first open it, it'll take you straight to the first page of the story, so that you skip all the 'front matter' (the cover itself, dedication, chapter headings etc) and there's sometimes some interesting information on those pages, so I always have to backtrack to see what Amazon have decided I don't need to see.
I actually love the tap feature not being 50/50. I hold the kindle in my left hand and love being able to just tap with my left thumb to move forward with the book.
I recommend getting a case for the Kindle. It pretty much eliminates the fingerprint issues. It also eliminates the power button being on the bottom issue. It's also nice because when you close the case, the Kindle goes to sleep. When you open it up, the Kindle awakens. In regards to the page turning, I never even noticed the percentage thing. I've always instinctively just tapped where the margins are on the right side to go forward and the left side to go back.
I think the power button location saves them money. They need to make one circuit with a charge port and a power button rather than two circuits for each.
I hate the power button as well. Wish it was on the top. I also don’t like how when you read book sets and finish each book it doesn’t count as books read till the whole set is finished
I have the Kindle Scribe and like it very much. As a reading device it lacks the ability to remove books from the home page to the library where the collections are. Organizing your books is important so the home page isn't being cluttered with new books you have purchased or books you have read but don't need them on the home page any longer. The Kindle App on the iPhone, iPad, and Fire have the capability to remove the books back to the library and into collections. Amazon software writers please help the reader have the control for a more pleasant reading experience.
The power button location and the backward page turn only being like 10% of the screen annoys me too. Happens a lot where I accidentally go forward when I intended to go backward. It’s super annoying.
Older Kindle models (like the Kindle Touch) had the option to display the publisher´s font for certain books. I guess they removed that feature in newer software updates.
I personally have dyslexia and OpenDyslexic font makes it worse. I find that San Serif fonts are easiest to read so the Amazon ember or Helvetic is what I would always choose.
in terms of the drm stuff and as much as i love my kobo, they are all the same and all have drm protection of some kind. with amazon making up 80-90% of the ebook market share, the ability for other readers to read non-drm/non-proprietary formats seems more like a survival option than good will. the amount of drm-free books out there is shockingly small, but if u don't mind using third party applications to rip off the drm/convert the format it's a small hurdle once you have your collection fairly stabilized. quite frankly i just buy whatever is cheapest (or more rarely the print if it's some deluxe edition that i couldn't help myself with) and then just torrent the epub. i want to support the authors of course.. but it's pretty easy to be adopt some technically illegal habits when the companies are so blatantly anti consumer.
Yeah, the more I look into it, the more I see DRMs everywhere! I understand the reasoning, but it's still anti-consumer. This is one reason I was reluctant to get an e-reader in the first place, but all-in-all, I still enjoy the portability.
@@chrisdigressesintobooks well the reasoning isn't even supported by evidence. it really is just there to lock you into their products/services and thats just they excuse that is readily accepted. tor publishing for example releases all of their books without drm and they saw no impact on their sales. i mean the thing is with most non-technical ebooks are affordable enough to not have to bother stealing them.. and those who would steal them are going to steal them regardless as again, these encryptions are necessarily simple considering their size.
I've tried those lens wipes since making this video, and you're right, that's probably the easiest, most effective way to clean it. Thankfully, I have a ton that I already use for my camera.
I'm looking at getting a base Kindle or base Kobo but really don't know which to buy. I'm mainly into murder mystery type of novels and learning languages so i don't know if one is better than the other. Any advice would be appreciated 😊
I'm probably not the best person for advice since I've only used this Kindle, but if you're just wanting to use it for reading, either should work. I've heard a lot of great things about the Kobo, so will be looking into that when I'm ready to get a second e-reader, but this Kindle has been serving me well so far!
I have lots of readers but I just bought this one. Total disappointment all the way around. Oh well, I'll just add it to my collection. My favorite reader right now is my Boox Leaf. Really good reader.
@@chrisdigressesintobooks Anywhere I want. It's Android based so it can be any reader. But the native Neo Reader is great and fully customizable and can read Kindle books without conversion. Oh, the Boox Leaf 2 is not as good as the original Leaf. But that's just my opinion.
That makes sense. These other ereader companies seem pretty competitive compared to Amazon's Kindle. When I decide to upgrade, I'll give these lesser known options a second look.
@Chris Digresses Into Books I wish you luck. If I were you, I'd migrate to the Android based readers. Generally, better screens for one. That's a big disappointment I have with the Kindle Paperwhite Signature screen. It's got a yellow cast to it (I like my screens white like paper), and the print, despite it being 300 ppi, is not as sharp as it should be. Good luck.
I haven't really used that feature, but I'm wondering how you go about doing that. Do you have to highlight it on one page, then flip the page and highlight the top of the next?
What comcerms me is the battery amazon claims 'up to 10 weeks' but that is for 30 minutes use per day and lighting at 13. Really? What is the total time in hours availble at 'normal' usage of at least 2 or 3 hours per day with good illumination. say full on instead of a candle about half a metre away As for fingrtprints , you really need a protective cover for the device, in case it gets dropped
At least they mention it's for 30 minutes a day of usage! The battery life hasn't really affected me much, but I can see how longer would be better for someone who reads on it much more than I do. I'm still shocked that it lasts more than 2 days since I'm so used to charging my phone that frequently.
In my humble opinion, most of what you said is niggling stuff. That last item though is true. Putting the on-off button where you hold your Kindle. A good part of the time is really annoying. Good video. Happy reading.
I didn't know that! Thanks for the information since I've only read one author on my Kindle so far, and they're self-published. I also found out it's possible to load custom fonts on the Kindle, but I haven't tried it yet. The issue isn't as bad as I thought, but there's still some room for improvement, in my opinion.

That really annoys me, too. I always have to backtrack to see if there's anything interesting there. That needs fixed.
Yeah, agree!
There is a setting that allows you to see the cover and info about the book the first time you open it
Hmm. I just looked for it, but couldn't find anything. Where's the setting located?
I totally agree with you about the power button location as well as the Kindle getting so dirty. Both of those annoy me so much!
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Nice seeing you here! :D I have seen many of your videos. They are really good! :D Thanks!
Get a case. It solves both problems.
I actually love the tap feature not being 50/50. I hold the kindle in my left hand and love being able to just tap with my left thumb to move forward with the book.
What if I hold it in my right hand and accidentally tap too much and have to go back? 🤔 lol

I should get a case. I usually try to avoid cases on brand new devices while I try them out, but I've had the Kindle for months now.

I didn't know that about book sets. That will definitely be annoying. I'll probably avoid purchasing sets after finding that out.
Agree with you about the power button. I always lock my screen! Great video
I know, right?? Why did they put it there? Thanks for watching!

I appreciate your perspective as someone with dyslexia. Didn't know that OpenDyslexic could potentially be worse!
I find myself using my Voyage mostly, because the power button is on the back of the device, plus I love the turn-page haptics!
I've heard more than one person say they'd like Amazon to bring the Voyage back.

You know you can add your own fonts right? A lot of them are free and can be easily added via usb cable
I agree with the location of the power button. I use the pre moistened lens wipes to clean my Kindle. Works great.

@@chrisdigressesintobooks then it will count as 2 highlights. You have to drag the cursor so the next page.. And that is the horrible part 😄
Wow. That sounds like a great user experience! I'm gonna try it next time I'm near my Kindle.
make the font smaller so some of the text that's on the next page will jump back
There's nothing i dislike about it..(although i only got it yesterday).
How about now? I hope you're still enjoying it! It was a great purchase for me.

If you don't need a connection to the internet, put it in Airplane Mode. Wi-fi being on drains the battery much faster.
I’m retired so I do a great deal of reading. I charge my kindle once a week.
I love the way it swipes… when I hold with my left hand it is easy to move forward
We each have our own preferences. Just wish it could be changed in the settings!

Great video, you have a new subscriber.
Thank you! And I appreciate the subscribe
On the fonts, I saw another video that showed some books do have publisher fonts.

@@chrisdigressesintobooks Always room for improvement. I am hoping they put out a good color eink eventually for comics.
Thank you
I clean mine with eyeglass wet lens wipes
Good to know! I was wondering if those could cause issues with the screen long term.
Can I browse lawsite with kindle paperwhite signature edition
The Kindle has a basic web browser, and it's not the easiest to use. However, if it's your only choice, it'll probably work!
You must have an easy/great life if these are the things that you "hate". :)
Very easy!
First world problems haha.
