So Hogan was the first wrestler ever to abruptly leave a territory? I find that hard to believe.
Nah Brody used to up and leave alot of places.
But keep in mind, back then the AWA was blowing up big. For an 80s wrestling show to be on freakin ESPN was unheard of and like he said, TSN on Canada (their ESPN). No doubt it wouldn't have lasted because Hogan and a few others were their only standout stars. They had the rubber figure line too in 1987 and I get the vibe it's a "what if" (Hogan stayed) bitter pill that the Gagnes still hold on to.
Gagne used his wrestlers, made sure he stayed over into his old age and made tons of money. When his wrestlers left, he was so entitled that he felt he was a victim. He acted like he was doing Hogan a favor, in his own words Hogan wasn’t ready to be a champ and didn’t deserve to get paid more for merchandise sales. He wasn’t capable of change because he knew best, after all he was the successful owner. He was a prime example of “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”
Damn that sounds like would Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair did and their old age
The Gagnes where stupid let’s face it , they had the biggest star in wrestling and failed to capitalise on it , if they had then wwf might not have reached the level that they have , they are untouchable now, aew will never take over them, least for the next 20 years
@Chris P nah they where stupid , naive wotever you make call it , stupid move cost them millions and a company, stupid
@Chris P notice there was no reply after your comments! Enough said you are correct. I have much respect for Vern and Greg gagne. And just because you're a multi-billionaire doesn't make you a good person. Exhibit a Vince McMahon
@Chris P that is true buddy I couldn’t agree more with what you just said , hope you have a good day also 👍😊
@@billwebber400 no comment after his reply why? Because some people work and have to sleep dumbass !!! No victory for you go back to bed with your uncle
@@billwebber400 exhibit b,,, tony khan !!! Pull your smelly tongue out of his ass boy he still don’t like ye
Right or wrong, Vince obviously thought the number they were asking for the Company was ridiculous, and he figured he could just poach and out flank them for the territory, at a fraction of the money- and that’s exactly what he did
Andre The Giant( Book out by WWF Vince McMahon Jr & Sr ) last NWA tour was 4/22/1984- 4/27/1984 for NWA World -Class Championship Wrestling, owned by Fritz Von Erich, Andre was taken out of any future NWA shows, with exception of Polynesian Pro Wrestling ( Hawaii ) & NJPW Tours. Andre The Giant becomes Exclusive to WWF until 5/101991. Andre The Giant jumps to All Japan Pro Wrestling after leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling. Andre The Giant jump to WCW 9/20/1992 at WCW Clash of The Champions XX # 20 -Free live on TBS , making a camo Appearance.
Well, you should have given them contracts Greg. You were making money off talent and not taking any responsibility for their insurance or the damage done to their bodies.
Yes, when Hulk Hogan was first seen by Verne, there should have been a big, big contract! I grew up on the old AWA & wish it could have lasted!
It wasnotGreg it was his Dad Verne had the old school way of doing business hand shakes My mother use to tell me stories about how my Grandfather could go to The bank and get A loan on A Handshake
@@norrisc7163 I understand that ;) I’m just telling Greg that’s what he and his dad should have done.
I agree on what you say about a handshake deal- that’s the way I was raised too, and I’d never go back on my word or a handshake. Unfortunately, we live in a dog eat dog world where lawyers and contracts mean more than anything. Blows.
@@Inequities I'm sure Greg Father Verne had the last word Like Vince and Fritz
@@norrisc7163 oh there’s no question
If only Verne would’ve given Hogan more title opportunities, Hulkamania would’ve been huge in AEW!
Question is Did Verne & Greg Gagne know Hulk Hogan would no Show AWA dates because he was about to get married Linda 12/18/1983 ? And did Vince McMahon pay for Hulk Hogan wedding ?
Verne Gagne was good at teaching wrestling but both he and Greg were not forward thinking business people. Verne was stuck in the past and did nothing to move the business forward or move with the times. Greg Gagne was a poor wrestler IMO. He looked like an insurance salesman and lacked any real charisma. Verne would use guys like his son and these old guard wrestlers like Nick Bockwinkle instead of the up and coming younger stars who were more exciting and had better physiques.
The thing about the business is that you can’t just put the title on some up and comer because there’s this thing called precedent and in that time it wasn’t unheard of for wrestlers to jump to a bigger promotion, so you can’t just give anyone the title. Hogan was going to leave no matter what because Hogan was all about MSG and the bright lights.
@@iBmEVanquisher Well, yeah. But AWA folded for a reason. They were good at what they did for a time period but didn't change or adapt to the times. Much like Blockbuster video. They were stuck in a certain old school way of thinking and didn't want to move the business forward or innovate.

Nose action at 2 minutes 58 seconds. Yeech!
Vince defeated a bunch of lazy asses. At least the AWA fought, though. A lot of promotions did not--they just sold out.
Jim Crockett was lazy?
Didn’t seem like much of a fight
@@chadk890 He didn't come close to outsourcing or outsmarted Vince. Lazy because he was largely unwilling to change until it was too late.
Well it's hard to fight when someone is stealing your Wrestlers
@Robert Rodriguez Vince didn't get all of them--not even close. Look no further than WCW--loaded with talent--which could have remained viable if it was run like an actual for-profit business instead of a subsidized loser.
Further, if the retards who tried to assemble Pro Wrestling USA would have kept their egos in check and comprised some, more promotions could have survived.
