What an absolutely class act. I grew up watching Dick Van Dyke and I've always been thankful for that fact. I think it would be hard to find another actor who is, at the same time an amazing talent, a humble being, and one of the most charming, flat out good souls I can think of. What a gift he has been to all of us.

Dick is like THE entertainment ICON, but such a next-door kind of guy. From local radio, to stage, to morning TV, to movies, to top-rated shows self-titled... he did everything there was to do and even invented more.

Thank you so much for this fantastic interview with loveable Dick Van Dyke. What an amazing human being. Such an inspiration to so many of us.
Recently I watched Max Rose (I wish I could find out where to purchase a copy). The rental was only for 48 hours, and in that time I managed to watch it 3 times. The scene that Dick alluded to, is my favorite, and I must have watched that part at least 6 times. The whole movie is brilliantly written, and all the parts were played out so believably, it is easy to forget you're watching a movie. I wish it would come out in DVD with lots of commentary and behind the camera scenes. I absolutely adore the movie. I must find a place to purchase a DVD (if any are made).
I loved your character's almost whispered response to Max's public outrage over your character's take on DISTRESS compared to Max's. Your quivered response of, "You're scaring me " was so powerful. It was not just the words, but the delicate mixture of layers of emotion that were displayed in your face as you said them: puzzlement over how to manage Max in his new situation, trying to re-establish connection that had broken between your character and Max's, trying to understand Max's needs while balancing that with what your character perceives Max's needs are, plus dealing with the immediate embarrassment of Max making a scene in public. That movie does such an excellent job of helping younger family members to understand that their older relatives are not necessarily being stubborn, they just want as much independence as any adult wants. It is hard to relinquish any, even when the need to do so becomes apparent.
It is such a beautiful movie.
My favorite scene was the one Dick referred to. I laughed and cried at the same time, and appreciate it on so many levels; how it was written, how it was played, the profound insights it offers to misunderstandings that can take place between two people. That scene is rich! Of course Jerry was spectacular, as you said; it must have been a wonderful experience for you to have a part in a movie with him. There are so many enjoyable scenes throughout the whole movie, I know that I will enjoy watching it many times again yet. As you so accurately stated, the movie is devastatingly moving! It truly is . What a masterpiece!
Thanks again for this fantastic interview. I loved your response to Dick starting one of his stories with, "I was at Windsor Palace being presented to the Queen . . . Your response was so quick, so endearing, and gave a generous acknowledgement to the honor Dick had been presented with. I will continue to share this beautiful interview with others. Thanks so much.
Near the end you mentioned that Dick also had a camera crew join you guys on this interview because they are planning on doing a documentary on his life. Dick also said that they had already done one on Jerry's life. Do you happen to know where a person can find those documentaries or who produced them?

    Kevin, GREAT interview.
I've worked in the concert and theatre business for most of my life and it occurs to me that you know something even better than I do... which is that actors and theatre folks can be the most insecure people on the planet.
What your interview with Mr. Van Dyke drives home is that an artist's greatness can sometimes be measured by their humbleness. Mr. Van Dyke is such a warm and easy and gracious cat, so comfortable in his own skin... you can't help but love the guy.
I had the opportunity to work on a show in Florida with Barbara Eden about eight years ago, and I was sitting talking with her in a dressing room when it dawned on me that she was a part of my DNA, just as Mr. Van Dyke is clearly in yours and in ours. I had to fight to suppress the inner 12 year old in me that was screaming OH MY GOD I'M TALKING TO JEANNIE!" and I could see moments where this kind of youthful awe was hitting you as well.
Interviewing someone who means that much to you, that you grew up with, isn't an easy thing and you handled it very nicely. Great show. BRAVO.

But on the re-watch I notice some things that slipped by. The open question thrown out about the actor who won Emmy's 3 times in a row when Dick Van Dyke is sitting right there and he won FOUR Emmy's in a row was kinda disturbing. I hope the research staff had some splaining to do.

The milky way was this white thing with detail all across the sky, you couldn't even make out the constellations, millions of colorful bight stars everywhere... and it was so shocking to me that it brought tears to my eyes.
