Great sound. Great teamwork when the sax player lost his headphones, covered by a drum fill and the trumpet player helps throw the headphones back on. The flawed beauty of LIVE.
Absolutely, he's a funkier version of Gavin Harrison in that way to me. Technically gifted but a great overall musician, not just a drummer, and playing for the song.
Flams between foot and hand are only the beginning with Lewis. Most impressive drummer I think I've ever heard. Not lacking any chops, seemingly never loses track of where the beat falls, all the speed you want in both feet and hands, and an incredible listener with the vocabulary to respond to the soloist. Oh, and clean as a whistle, even when it gets really busy.
At 3:42 Reynolds responds to Lewis’ call. Lewis repeats the response to let Reynolds know that he is listening too. Lewis consistently places beats when Reynolds takes his breaths. Later at 4:15 Lewis hears Reynolds’ accents on the upbeat and changes grooves. At 4:34 they’re locked into the same pattern creating an incredible build up. At 4:55 Reynolds loses his headphones right at the peak of the section. Lewis notices this and continues to fill the space with a massive fill. And to think that Lewis had limited time to learn these songs on top of it being live is mind blowing. I’ve heard of Bob Reynolds before from John Mayers live in LA album from 2007, but, I’ve never heard of SP before. How have I never heard of these guys before now?
about 4:55 I really dont think he used the fill as a cover, just because that fill was going already when those fall..he may or may not have made it longer if he actually saw that IMMEDIATELY but its not major stuff id say. Snarky Puppy or how to transform a surgery in a good memory ♥
I get what you're saying, but I don't think that complexity is the correct term. It's a language you develop and communicate. While it can be complex, that's not the goal.
The downfall of a drummer- especially a jazz drummer- is when one doesn't listen to the soloist. Good jazz drummers- the ones I want to play with- are those that do 3:39- when the soloist does a roll lick and the drummer responds with a roll on the snare. And in 3:44 when the his 4 note lick (2 sixteenth, eighth, downbeat) is mimicked on the snares a beat later. That is sick. Improv and response. Don't play jazz without listening like that. Its being "in tune" a different way.

ha! I though I was the only one who noticed that lady's dirty looks at the drummer
Lmho.
@@dcdigofire2 Im a straight dude but if larnell was playing like that in front of me id be giving him the exact same looks
Totally noticed that haha - and he stayed locked with *that* look burning into him! Respect...
Who's that girl? 😂
THAT SAX SOLO WAS AWEEEESOMEEE!!!!!
The wind players are fantastic. All the players are fantastic, but the way the winds have to wait, then come in off-beat, together in unison, and for memory, is VERY impressive. Super impressive band, amazing music.
Something about this record hits so different compared to other snarky puppy stuff. Props to the boys for shooting it outta the park
Yeah.
They sure did.
Agreed. I really like some of their other stuff, but this album in particular is ... something indeed. Can’t put my finger on it. It’s probably Larnell though.
@@colin8150 All the other drummers are great. Larnell just really drove this album with his powerful and intricate playing. The drum was a dominant background instrument and he used a lot of different styles which made it more memorable.
These videos also gave more substance and weight (in memory) to the music.
@@TheSeeking2know Agreed, especially on the point of the videos. High production value, great drumming, multiple amazing solos.
Sax man knows how to use space. Builds himself right up.
This is the kind of band I'd love to hear at an outdoor venue on a warm summer evening!
Ms. Violin Player is digging her some Larnell drums from 4:44-4:50 and I can't say that I blame her.
Hahahahahaha
it's actually Ms. Viola Player :D
AAHHAHAHA
Randal McNeill I took a screenshot of her face telling my buddy this is why we play music Haha
Randal McNeill Man that woman wants Larnell's D, i can see it through her eyes. Lmao
I still can't believe this was recorded live
The Audience members got a real treat
that moment between the sax user and drummer. wow! my soul felt that.
drummer got the call om saturday night. jumped on the flight and started recording the next week. only knowing 3 songs!! what a feat.
they recorded over 3-4 days though
Where did you read it?
I didn't write the comment you're replying to, but you can find it here: drummerszone.com/news/article/on-stage-6-12488/larnell-lewis-takes-care-of-snarky-puppy-dvd-recordings
There's 6 videos on the right of the page. The first one (upper left-hand corner) is the one where he talks about the last-minute call and having to learn the songs on the flight from Canada to Amsterdam.
dope story..shoutout to LL for the pinch hit walk-off grand slam to win the world series!
Mo Overall Fitness Hacks are you 💩ing me man??? DAMN! What I like most about Larnell Lewis is that he's so humble. He's fast, precise, technical AND improvisational. He makes me want to throw all of my sticks in the fireplace!😭
