First of all I have fallen in love with your videos. It’s like you’ve found a list of my favorite bands and are just nailing the subject choices. Second, Jake Cinninger is an absolute beast. The man can play any style and locks in with the rhythm section for some of the most syncopated polyrhythmic playing I’ve ever heard in a band that improvises large chunks of their show. The hooks to umphreys songs are incredible. Please please do a video on their song Mantis. It is an epic ballad that highlights what is possible with a group of players that all have an insane sense of time.
Awesome video! A point; This is a GREAT intro to Umphrey's as songwriters and musicians but there is so much more out there. I would reccommend "Bridgeless" for Proggy madness or even "Plunger" for a bit of everything that they do. They do these sets called "Jimmy Stewarts" where they "write" songs live via improv. Those can get really crazy as they can go literally anywhere. "Ringo" from their NYE show in Denver for 2019 is an example of a recent Jimmy Stewart and is worth checking out. It's an hour long but even 20 minutes in shows their wild, reggae, snappy side. The catalogue is vast and Phish-like in some sense but they are heavier. I hope your channel continues to grow, love what you been covering. I'm trying to learn more theory and after watching a couple other channels, you make the mossense to me hah thank you
Kris Myers - Drums, Andy Farag - Perc, Jake Cinninger - Lead guitar, Breandan Bayliss rhythm guitar, Ryan Stasik - Bass, Joel Cummins - Piano. What Jake is using is called the Jake Blade instead of a whammy. he created it and sells them. Ive seen these guys more than 300 times in 13 years. they STILL blow my mind get better every show. If you ever want recommendations on full shows I got you. Or DL the Nuggs app they have like 2200 live shows on there of UM. Check out Fussy Dutchman, Wizard Burial Ground if you want metal UM, Glory, Get In the Van, and their mashup of Loser by beck and national anthem by Radiohead. They mix them together and it's beyond impressive. They have a whole album on Spotify called zonkey where they mash songs together. like electric ave and highway to hell. it's amazing. Glad to see these guys getting the love they deserve.
Did you happen to be at the IU amphitheater when they covered 'Hey 19'? One of the best shows I've seen other than the Big Summer Classic a few years before. I've lost count how many I've been to....lol
Brian Elstro Big Summer Classic at Blossom was my first Umphrey's show. Can't believe I'm coming up on 15 years of seeing them. Going to crack #40 in Iceland next month!
You're awesome, man. You breaking this stuff down as you listen is a game changer. I don't think I need to convince you to delve deeper into Umphrey's... Sounds like you gonna do that anyway. To maybe help with that, give 'Mantis' a listen. 'All In Time' is another classic. If you like the metal side of things, 'Wizard Burial Ground' will have your eye brows locked in a funky position for days afterwards. Brendan Bayliss (lead vocals in this vid) is a shred master in his own right, you don't see it so much in 'Puppet Strings' though. Every member of this band is top tier stuff. I digress... I gotta say that I've seen a bunch of your other vids too, and these things are really special. I'm not one to tell anybody what to do, but if I had a suggestion to make it's that you just keep on keeping on with these videos. Brilliant stuff brother!
Umphrey’s is my current obsession. I can’t get enough. Jake is a god. He can play any style of music. Sometimes all in the same song. Aside from Guitar he can also play drums & Keys & probably every other instrument under the sun. He’s a virtuoso. Brendan’s not too shabby either. He may not be on Jakes level but he can hold his own. Before I got into Umphrey’s I was really into the band moe. I still am. Chuck and Al and 2 of the most underrated guitar players on the planet. Rolling Stone once called them space rock guitar gods. As you continue on your Jamband quest I highly recommend you check them out. Some of my favorite songs include Rebubula, Recreational Chemistry, Plane Crash, Timmy Tucker. You can’t go wrong with any song of there’s. Back in 2016 I discovered a band from Belfast that absolutely blew my mind. The band I discovered was Electric Octopus. Electric Octopus are a new and exciting musical cabal that'll take your mind on a weird and wonderful adventure. They’re an instrumental trio comprised of guitar, bass and drums. They mix Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Psychedelic and whatever else they feel like playing. They throw out all the rules and make it up as they go along. They plug in and hit record and what ever happens happens. Every song is an improv that’s made up on the spot. You never know what your going to get. They jam harder then any jamband in the US. Most songs can easily go 20+ minutes. They have studio albums that clock in at over 3hrs. It’s an experience. It’s the perfect soundtrack to put on when you want to clean, fall asleep, get some work done, go on a road trip or rock out and play air guitar. You can’t go wrong with any album/song. Electric Octopus is the definition of prolific. They’ve released so much music in such a short period of time. However the band just put out a statement saying that they are going on hiatus. The bands lead guitar player Tyrell Black is a nomad. He likes likes to travel and live like a hippie. Before the band made the official announcement Tyrell was living in a van down by the river. He made a lot of instagram posts out and about in nature. He seemed like a very interesting person. He’s currently traveling around India. There is no timetable as to when he’ll return or when the band will get back together and jam. Jake Cinninger is as good as any guitarist I've ever heard not named Derek Trucks🤩 Seriously he is such a versatile artist that I listen in awe. The whole band is great but, Jake is a prodigy in very rare air.
Jake is definitely my favorite with his versatility, shred, and creativity, but Derek's ability to make his guitar really sing with phrasing and dynamics is matched by noone.
Your channel is introducing me to so much new stuff, thanks so much. Keep it up. Every thing your saying is way over my head but it's fun to try to follow.
Awesome video and breakdown of UM! I subscribed to your channel in the hopes that you'll do some more UM! Long time fan and have seen them over 100 times if you would like some song suggestions. Out of Order, Mantis, Bridgeless, Miss Tinkles Overture, Plunger, gah there's so many!
Hey man, I'm yet another subscriber that found you after you started doing vids on dead, phish, umph, etc. So glad to see you get turned on to UM. My first experience with them was their show at the the inaugural Bonnaroo festival in '02. I went on the see them 40+ times, mostly from '03 to '08. And that guitarist.... Saw Umphrey's McGee the first time in Halloween 07 in Denver. Super fun time, great band! Glad you found them! We gonna see some Moe next? Just sayin'...
The drummer on the set is Kris Myers. You are very correct, the man is "killer", one of the best alive right now in my opinion. Pretty great singer too, which is especially tough to do when you're hitting those things like he does! Seems like you are an MD guy from your affinity for PRS and The Ravens, so here is a video of Umphrey's playing in the DMV this past Halloween at The Anthem. They played an assortment of Police tunes, hence the costumes (PS love these videos please keep em coming!): ruclips.net/video/2XZs92Xu82A/видео.html
I've seen umphreys a lot and they always blow my mind. Your reaction to this song is the same as mine. Whenever people are curious about them this is the song I share with them. They used to come to Baltimore every fall and Valentines day weekend. I haven't seen them in a few years so I'm not sure about the schedule now. I heard you say you live in Baltimore in another video. That's a great place for live music! I live not far away in Harpers Ferry.
seeing these guys and Disco Biscuits in one solid 4+ hour chunk of uninterrupted music late night at Bonnaroo (seriously, they changed drum sets piece by piece except the kick while still playing) was among the best experiences of my life
Guitar playing live music junkie here. Just found your channel. Watched John Butler review and now Umphrey's McGee... two of my absolute favorites that I have seen many many times! Loved seeing your reaction and breakdown of chords. So true about Umphrey's dynamics. I would recommend Steve Kimock Band - Tongue and Groove or a moe. song like Timmy Tucker, 32 Things or Recreational Chemistry. The band has two amazing guitarists and if you dig Umphrey's, moe. will blow your mind!!
Hey teach, just started your watching your channel when I saw your phish video the other day. Love seeing you get turned on to all these excellent jam bands. Phish, greatful dead, umphreys mcgee. Please please continue playing these jam bands. Twiddle, pigeons playing ping pong, and goose are a couple other incredible bands. If u choose to play one I could definitely recommend something good and even give you some background or what ever! Keep on jamming!
So pumped you finally got to experience some Umphrey's! Highly highly recommend doing a reaction video on Tedeschi-Trucks Band (or really anything with Derek Trucks). I saw you did a Billy Strings/Marcus King Band reaction and feel Derek Trucks would compliment that well.

So glad you can appreciate the awesomeness of Umph! These guys are the tightest rock improv band around currently. They play on the edge and can turn on a dime. I'm a huge Phish and Dead fan but as far as right now currently killing it every time they play. Go see them if you have a chance. Also all really nice guys!

There is a reason I've seen these guys around 40 times. Came here after the WBG video, we need you to keep breaking down the HOF (Hall of Fame) versions. So glad you did this one! It’s great watching you watch these bands for first time.
this is like the feeling of when you show your buddy Jake cinniger for the first time. Its nice when someone who knows what they're talking about can actually appreciate how good these guys are.
I hope your channel continues to grow, love what you been covering. I'm trying to learn more theory and after watching a couple other channels, you make the mossense to me hah thank you
Robert Dietterick thanks a good luck!
Umphreys McGee is a very talented group and cover many genres with amazing time signatures. Even better live too
That "thing" is called his "Jake Blade"
its a peace of motorcycle gas tank custom out of production currently.
@@um311 I saw Jake announced he was releasing some more Jake blades
Currently back in production*
@@berth8293 Great news!
So happy you did Umph. One of my favorite bands. More jam bands please! String Cheese Incident. Lotus. Disco biscuits. The possibilities are endless.

Thanks!! Will do
Great band, great song, great video and breakdown. If you EVER have the chance to see this guy live, they're fantastic.
Saw them about 15 or 16 years ago for the first time at Birmingham Southern College. Fantastic band. Huge fan ever since.
I love it, the looks on your face as you soak it in are worth the watch. Faces melted is the name of the Umphrey's Game.
For more info check out the following links.

My fav of yours so far! So glad you got turned on to UM \uu/
saw them live in Portland just pre pandemic...bounced all night long...so amazing live.
MOOOORREEEE I need MOOORRREEE.....Umphs, Phish, Dead, Goose, Aqeuous, String Cheese, keep the Jam coming man I love this channel look forward everyday to see what your watching! don't stop
Don't forget the biscuits sweetie.
Man, yes.... Goose GOOSE.. They are the best thing to happen since Phish
Again, a great channel with great content full of all the music I'm into!
Jake Cinninger is as good as any guitarist I've ever heard not named Derek Trucks🤩 Seriously he is such a versatile artist that I listen in awe. The whole band is great but, Jake is a prodigy in very rare air.
Ahh I love seeing a fellow Derek fan!
I like Umphreys more than I like TTB but, Derek is hands down the best out there. Saw him a Trey go at it last year Lockn, absolutely amazing.
Jake is definitely my favorite with his versatility, shred, and creativity, but Derek's ability to make his guitar really sing with phrasing and dynamics is matched by noone.
@@nebulaton1137 well put
Your channel is introducing me to so much new stuff, thanks so much. Keep it up. Every thing your saying is way over my head but it's fun to try to follow.
Awesome video and breakdown of UM! I subscribed to your channel in the hopes that you'll do some more UM! Long time fan and have seen them over 100 times if you would like some song suggestions. Out of Order, Mantis, Bridgeless, Miss Tinkles Overture, Plunger, gah there's so many!
Holy schnitzel I’ve never heard these guys but they are phenomenal! Reminds me of like a super technical Dispatch on steroids🤩 Im now a fan!
I think you are gonna know his name is Jake Cinninger from now on lol.
Umph love they just did a two night run with billy strings on 2/14/20-2/15/20 check out the Friday show Billy comes up for two songs and it's on 🔥 Jake and Billy together it doesn't get any finer than that
ruclips.net/video/_0xOUbmw1iU/видео.html here is the link
Oh man it does if you count Voodoo Child from Saturday
Was shocked how good they played together. Not a fan of bluegrass but he rocked with umps both nights.
Billy Strings went toe to toe with jake. Never seen that before, it was wild
I love hearing someone who knows music really well hear umphs for the first time. This was great. Go to their show next time they're in, you won't be disappointed :)
I’ve really become a fan of your channel lately. Excellent and informative breakdowns of some of my favorite bands. The internet needs genuine talent and people like you! By the way, space bar pauses and plays the video to make it easy for ya:) thank you!
Kris Myers is a freak of nature
Hardest working man in show business.
Kris Myers singing hot for teacher while playing the drums is something to see.
I can’t get enough of these videos and can’t wait for each new upload. I hope you revisit phish and UM again.
I love watching people ''Get'' Phish for the first time!
Iron maiden had a baby with Phish...that baby grew up listening to Yes = Umphrey's McGee
Thanks you for showing UMPH LOVE! Keep an eye out in a city near you!
seeing these guys and Disco Biscuits in one solid 4+ hour chunk of uninterrupted music late night at Bonnaroo (seriously, they changed drum sets piece by piece except the kick while still playing) was among the best experiences of my life
Guitar playing live music junkie here.
1st Umphrey reaction ever, luv it brother. Keep it up
The Jaco Fish with melt your face straight off. Raiders of the Lost Ark every show!
Best live band in the country right now. Simply unreal how tight they are live. There light show is top notch as well.
What's amazing is how much of what Jake (and the other guys) do is improvised! Jake's solos are nuts
Do some Mikey era Widespread Panic. Mikey had a very unique style.
Paul Haynes absolutely
So pumped you finally got to experience some Umphrey's! Highly highly recommend doing a reaction video on Tedeschi-Trucks Band (or really anything with Derek Trucks). I saw you did a Billy Strings/Marcus King Band reaction and feel Derek Trucks would compliment that well.
Glad to see some Umphrey’s! Kind of like a progressive rock/jam band. They should be more popular in my opinion.
Love that you got to sit in with them. So cool.
3 minutes into this vid and I hit the subscribe button....so much appreciate how you approach\explain this song. Can't wait to start watching your other vids!
This is so chill. Found this channel like three days ago and was like man i hope he does umphreys friggin next video right on
Umphreys is probably the best live band I've ever seen when it comes to a live performance
Love this song!! Ty
Dude killer video, got my like and subscribe. This video was perfectly timed I traveled from Chicago to Tennessee to Umphreys McGee play at The Caver, underground this weekend.
This version has stuck with me since Freshman year of college, one of the best Umph's tunes epic walkthru!
Um been killin it for years, mad respect
You should react to either the Reba or Divided Sky by phish from there 10/31/94 show at the glens falls civic center. There is video for both on youtube
That Divided Sky is definitely EPIC!
Oh yeah! Umphrey's McGee is something special! Great video, hope you do some more UM!
Welcome to the Umphreys Family! They are the best band out there!!
Uh-Oh....now he's into Festival Prog Bands! Other than Umphrey's - You gotta check out String Cheese Incident, Moe especially and my new favorite...Goose! Love it, Brother!!!!
And Dopapod ;)
You gotta get into Billy Strings too, the guy is an insane shredder at 27 years old and taking Bluegrass into unchartered territory! Here he is (on Electric...pretty rare) with Umph ruclips.net/video/_0xOUbmw1iU/видео.html
These videos just started showing up on my feed and I watched this one immediately after the John Butler "Ocean" breakdown. Not sure the goosebumps on my arms can handle much more.
Knew an umphreys vid had to be coming at some point love it
Been to 39 Umph shows, one of the best bands on the planet my dude. Hardest working band in the industry! UmphLove! Every player is at the top of there game and so in tune with each other.
Saw them 15 years ago when I was in college. Blew my mind back then.
We like all this jam stuff for its originality and inspired creativity. We see how talented you are, so we gotta ask, post/link up some of your original (or cover) performances! Do it, man! And, keep this up, too. It's beyond cool!
Seen umphrey a few times now and they can really take you places!
Dude! I highly recommend attending an Umphrey’s show. They are great to watch on your computer and I say keep that up so I can watch you dissect, but their shows are quite an experience.
Jake is the reason I now own a G&L and more precise a Comanche. I found it at the used rack at Guitar Center and couldn't put it down or leave without it.
Umphrey's McGee is amazing :)
Oh hell yes! My favorite band of all time
There is a reason I've seen these guys around 40 times.
Came here after the WBG video, we need you to keep breaking down the HOF (Hall of Fame) versions. These are special jams that us as fans vote for at the end of the year, then Umphreys compiles them into a yearly greatest hits, basically.
That WBG was on the HOF.
The tones you can get from those G & L pups are just sick.
You just got a new subscriber! Umphrey's has been my favorite band for some time now. Thank you for taking the time to check them out and make this video!!! Also, zebra print guitar?! sick :)
